Lula Harjo

Lula Kay Harjo, 62 year old Seminole resident passed from this life on Monday, March 30, 2015 at her home. S

he was born Sept. 16, 1952 in Claremore, Okla. to parents, Samsochee Harjo and Imogene (Little) Harjo.

Lula graduated from Strother High School in 1970.

She was also a member of Hitchittee Methodist Church.

Lula started working at the Seminole, "Blue Bell Blue Jean Company, " before it became "Wrangler, " she had also worked as a dietary aid.

She was also a longtime homemaker.

Survivors include; one son, Pete W. Harjo and his wife Patricia of Seminole, Okla.; one daughter, Kimberly Stephens and her husband Claud III of Wewoka, Okla.; three brothers, Percy Harjo and his wife Julie of Antlers, Okla., Bruce Harjo and his wife Gail of Shawnee, Okla., Nathaniel Harjo and his wife Jackie of Seminole, Okla.; five sisters, Mary Jackson and her husband Abe of Shawnee, Okla., Mildrid Harjo of Seminole, Okla., Delois Harjo of Earlsboro, Okla., Renae Larney and her husband Travis of Seminole, Okla., Channon Harjo of Seminole, Okla.; eight grandchildren, Peter Harjo, Jennifer Harjo, Kimbrie Strayhorn, Shemmario Stephens, Shemmei Stephens, Shallomar Stephens, Shiloh Harjo, Jordan Fixico; two great-grandchildren, Ambry Harjo, Evelyn Harjo; and a host of other family and dear friends.

Lula was preceded in death by her mother, Imogene (Little) Harjo, by her father, Samsochee Harjo, by one son, Darren Strayhorn, and by her former husband and the father of her children, Gary Strayhorn.

A wake service is scheduled for Wednesday, April 1, 2015 and Thursday, April 2, 2015 at the Seminole Nation Community Center near Strother School. T

he body will be taken to the Community Center on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. and returned to Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole at 10:00 a.m. on Friday.

Funeral Services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Friday, April 3, 2015 at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole, Okla.

Abe Jackson and Ray Tainpel will officiate the service.

Casket Bearers will be: Allen Jackson, Sam Harjo, Jacob Harjo, Eric Harjo, Isiah Harjo, Echo Harjo, Jonathan Harjo, and Joseph Harjo.

Honorary Bearers will be: Po Larney, Sam Spencer, Cody Harjo and Trey Spencer.

Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, Okla.

Frank Harris

Frank Wilson Harris, 64, of Copperas Cove, Tex., passed away Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2015 at the Senior Citizens’ Center building 111 Randolf in Seminole.

Frank was born Sept. 26, 1950 at the old home place on Little River.

He was the seventh of thirteen children born to the late Floyd and Lillie Shepherd Harris of Earlsboro.

He graduated from Pleasant Grove Schools in 1968.

Frank lived in Oklahoma and Texas, but loved his time in Arizona.

He enjoyed remodeling homes and will be remembered for his free spirit.

Frank had a talent for singing, which led him to be the lead singer for many rock and roll bands.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Grady, O.D. and Winston and a niece, Donita Engelke.

Frank is survived by his siblings, Esther (Don) Hopkins, Jeannie (Arnold) Melton, Winnie (Phillip) Stillwell, Larry (Linda) Harris, Bobby Harris, Allen (Berta) Harris, Darrell (Rebecca) Harris and Phillip Harris.

Orthel Harris

Orthel "Archie" Harris, 84, longtime Seminole resident died, Thursday, March 12, 2015 at Oklahoma City.

Orthel was born in Scottsville, Ark. to Birch Field (Buck) and Gladys (Brown) Harris.

After the family relocated to Oklahoma, he worked, farming, in his younger days.

He always had stories to tell about the mischief they got into working the fields.

Later he worked for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation retiring in 1995, with 27 years of service.

He loved working in his garden after retirement.

It seems he had a " green thumb" and could always produce a large amount of vegetables that he enjoyed giving away.

He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He married Mary Jane Faltermier in Maud, Okla. on March 28, 1954.

They raised their family of three boys and one girl in the Seminole area.

They are Orthel Harris, Jr. of Seminole, Bob Harris and his wife Mitzi of Seminole and Gerald Harris and his wife Brenda of Wylie, Tex. and his daughter Sharon Ghalandachi and her husband Ammad of Katy, Texas.

He had many grandchildren and great grandchildren that he enjoyed spending time with.

After the loss of Mary Jane in 2001, he married Myra Cummings Harris in 2004, they enjoyed several years together.

He enjoyed a special relationship with her children Dan and wife Barbara of Tampa, Florida, and Debbie Darr and her husband Tim of Seminole and their families.

Also surviving him are brothers, Athel Harris of Brooksville, Okla., Willie Harris and his wife Camilla of Seminole, Thurman Harris and his wife Georgia of Sulphur, Okla., Ray Harris and his wife Helen of Valiant, Oklahoma, sisters Edith Sbabo and Ruby Maner, both of Russellville, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by a sister Nina Fay Cowan.

Funeral services are planned for 10:30 A.M., Monday, March 16, 2015 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole, Oklahoma with Pastor Bill Chesser officiating.

Burial will follow at Little Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be Ryan Harris, Tim Darr, Dusty Darr, Trace Darr, Jesse Harris and John Lee.

The family will receive family and friends, Sunday, March 15, 2015 at Swearingen Funeral Home from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, Okla.

Douglas Hart Jr.

Douglas "Butch" Hart Jr. was born on December 14th, 1955 to Douglas Hart Sr. and Mary Ann Hart.

Douglas passed away on his favorite holiday Valentines Day.

He graduated from Wewoka High School in 1974 and went into the Navy shortly after.

His mother and sister Eloise Glover precede him in death.

He leaves his father Douglas Hart Sr., brother, Kenneth Hart (Clarissa Hart), daughter Diamond Jackson and two grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015 at 11 a.m., at the Westside Community Center, 101 N. Seminole St. in Wewoka.

Arrangements were entrusted to OK Cremation and Funeral Home, Oklahoma City.

Dennis Haynes

Dennis George Haynes passed away in Holdenville on Monday, March 9, 2015, at the age of 48 years.

Dennis was the son of Hoover & Aggie (Sewell) Gibson, born on July 4, 1966 in Talihina, Okla.

He was brought up in Holdenville and Wewoka. He graduated Wewoka High School in 1984, and earned an Associates Degree in Accounting from Wright Business College in Oklahoma City.

He was employed in various occupations and worked for Wal Mart, for Wrangler in Seminole, and as a cashier at Creek Nation Casino in Holdenville.

He was a member of the Indian Nation Baptist Church in Seminole.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Hoover Haynes & Aggie Gibson.

He is survived by two sons, Nick Haynes and Zach Bradley, and their mother, Ladawn Billy, all of the home; three sisters: Martha Huntley of Seminole, Polly Harrison of Holdenville, and Amanda Haynes of San Carlos, Arizona; sex aunts: Velma Martin, Wanda Sewell, and Deborah Sewell, all of Wewoka, Little Pauline Haynes, Big Pauline Haynes, and Lou Haynes, all of Henryetta; five uncles, Jack Sewell of Idabel, Newman Sewell of Tahlequah, Thomas Sewell of Dallas, Tex., Bill Haynes of Seminole, and Vernon Haynes of Ariz.; three nieces, three nephews, eighteen great nieces and nephews; various other family members, and many friends.

Funeral services will be Saturday, March 14, 2:00 p.m. at Sand Creek Eufaula Baptist Church in Wewoka.

Officiating ministers are Rev. Houston Tiger, Rev. Bill Barnett, and Rev. Louis Johnson.

Pallbearers are Wallace Scott Jr., Bunny Powell, Michael Scott, Roy Powell, Darrell Powell, and Danny Powell. Honorary pallbearers are Comma Harjo, Lewis Harjo, Johnny Wayne Harjo Jr., Marty Haynes, Billy Haynes, and Zach Bradley.

Services are under direction of Fisher Funeral Home of Holdenville.

Glen Henry

Coach Glen "Bullet" Henry, 75, of Cedar Falls, died Friday, Feb. 27, 2015, at UnityPoint Health-Allen Hospital, Waterloo.

He was born July 20, 1939, in Seminole, Okla., the son of Arthur Beecher and Letha Oline (Siler) Henry.

His early years were spent in Oklahoma.

In 1949, the family moved to Wyoming where he graduated from Newcastle High School in 1957.

He met and married his high school sweetheart, Karen Nygaard.

They moved to Chadron, Neb., where they attended college.

Glen played football and basketball at Nebraska State College at Chadron and graduated in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree with an emphasis in Physical and Health Education and Life Sciences.

In 1966 he continued his education at Nebraska State College, earning his Master’s of Science in Education and Administration with an emphasis in the Organization and Administration of Health, Physical Education and Recreational Programs.

Until he retired in 2004, he served as an Associate Professor for 38 years at the University of Northern Iowa in Health, Physical Education and Leisure Services.

After graduating, he taught and coached for two years in Greybull, Wyo., prior to moving to Cedar Falls in 1966, where he took a job as a football coach at the University of Northern Iowa.

Glen Henry served as UNI’s first men’s swimming coach and remained the head coach through the 1981 season.

He also took on the additional responsibility of women’s head coach his last year of coaching.

He led the Panthers to 10 men’s North Central Conference championships, with his swimmers earning 129 individual conference titles.

Fifty-seven male athletes were national qualifiers and 35 earned All-American accolades.

He earned Coach of the Year honors seven times. In addition, he served on the NCAA Swimming and Diving Rules Committee, was chair of the Collegiate All-American Swimmer Selection Committee, and was a state, district and national swim clinician. He refereed and coordinated 17 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s National Swimming and Diving Championships from 1977-1995.

He was the author of The Certified Swimming Officials’ Case Book, and in 1995 founded the Intercollegiate Swim Officials Association. Henry has received the UNI Alumni Achievement Award and has served as President and Fund Drive Chair of the UNI Athletic Club.

A swimming and diving scholarship endowment has been established in his name. Glen was inducted in the UNI Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002. UNI named its competitive pool in his honor.

He retired from UNI in 2004. That July, he and his wife Karen, were injured in a motorcycle accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down.

He spent the last 10 years doing motivational speaking and helping coach the UNI women’s swimming and diving team.

Glen was an entrepreneur, inventor and owned several businesses in the Cedar Valley area.

He served as President of the Lions Club.

He was also an entertainer, singing and playing guitar in his own band.

He was very involved in spinal cord injury research for the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation.

He always had a positive attitude that he maintained despite his injury.

He fought and battled through the injury like a true champion to the end, the man, the coach and the athlete that he was.

Survivors include his wife, Karen Henry of Cedar Falls; one son, Lance Henry, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two daughters, Lisa (Gregg) Holmes of Paradise Valley, Ariz., and Lori (Bob) Donnelli of Scottsdale; a nephew, Glen C. (Sandy) Henry of Cedar Falls; three grandchildren, Taylor and Blake Donnelli, and Jackson Holmes; two brothers, Thomas (Connie) Henry of Stratton, Neb., and Vernon (Arlene) Henry of Casper, Wyo.; two sisters, Faye (Terry) Cole of Carlsbad, Calif., and Maggie (Bill) Riley of Rock Springs, Wyo.; and several nieces and nephews.

Glen was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Arthur Beecher Henry Jr.

Services were 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, at Nazareth Lutheran Church, with burial in Fairview Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 2, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, Cedar Falls.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the UNI Panther Athletic Club/Glen Henry Scholarship Fund.
