Benton Hopkins

Benton Thomas "Tom" Hopkins, Jr., former Seminole county resident passed away Friday, March 6, 2015 in Oklahoma City at the age of 73.

Tom was born July 8, 1941 in Oklahoma City to parents, Benton Thomas Hopkins, Sr. and Mary (Reid) Hopkins.

Upon his completion of high school, Tom attended Barber College and owned and operated his own barber shop.

Tom married Norma Jean (Kernell) Hopkins in Shawnee, Oklahoma on Oct. 20, 1977.

Tom is survived by his wife of the home, Norma Jean Hopkins; two daughters, Michelle Hopkins, and Jennifer Hopkins and four grandchildren.

Tom was preceded in death by his father, mother and stepfather.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel of Seminole, Okla. with pastor Leon Postoak and Rev. Chebon Kernell officiating.

Burial will take place at the Kernell Family Cemetery, located west of Seminole, Okla.

Serving as casket bearers are: Jason Kernell, Aaron Kernell, Tino Kernell, Anthony Kernell, Todd Smith and Chris Smith.

Honorary bearers are: Rocky Kernell, and Greg Kernell.

Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole, Okla.

Irene Ingram

Irene Mae (Cook) Ingram of Cromwell, Okla., passed away Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2015 at her daughter's home in Cromwell.

Born Jan. 14, 1949 in Salem, Calif. to the late Lewis Charles Cook and Dorothy Mae (Maynard) Cook.

Irene worked a number of years for Dunkin Donuts as Manager. She was of the Baptist Faith.

Preceding Irene in death are her parents, son Jerry Keith Wands, first husband Gerald Keith Wands, two brothers Jimmy Cook and infant brother.

Survivors include children: Traci Elliott of Seminole, Suretta Irene Wands, Shannon Cellars, Angela Wands all of Cromwell, Okla.; thirteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren; brother Charles Cook of Oklahoma City, sister Wilda Wells of Shawnee, Okla., numerous other relatives and friends,

Memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Bearden Holiness Church with Pastor Timothy Flynn.

Clifford Jackson

ADA - Services for Clifford Eugene Jackson, 74, of Ada, are 10:00 a.m. Friday at the Criswell Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Steve Wilburn will officiate.

Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Criswell Funeral Home.

Mr. Jackson died Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at a local nursing home.

He was born March 31, 1941 in Seminole, Okla. to Godfrey Dewitt Jackson and Mable Grace McDaniel Jackson.

He graduated from Seminole High School and received a Master’s Degree from East Central University.

He married Evonda Joyce Scott on Dec. 5, 1986 in Las Vegas, NV.

Mr. Jackson was a State Trooper with Troop F with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol for 23 years.

He later was a Jail Administrator for the City of Ada for 19 years.

Mr. Jackson was a member of Fitzhugh Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Evonda, of the home; his children, Julie Wilcox and husband Bill of Plano, Tex., Brian Jackson and wife Kim of Oklahoma City, Jill Darnell and husband Bill of Houston, Tex., Justin Priest and wife Tana of Roff and Kandyce Davis of Ada; two brothers, Charles Jackson and wife Willie of Alex and Kenneth Jackson and wife Carol of Las Cruces, N.Mm.; his grandchildren, Conner Priest, Zac Byrd, Kaitlyn Davis, Kymber Davis, Jennifer Darnell, Lindsey Boudreau, Shawna Martell and Kris Carter; five great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother; and a sister, Helen Barlow.

Bearers will be the OHP Honor Guard.

Honorary bearers will be Tim Stone, Jack McNutt, Steve West, Carl Allen, John Wayne Smith, Paul Roan, Pete Peterson, Harvey Phillips, Mike Wegrzyn, and Ed Coffey.

LaRonda James

LaRonda Lynn (Pitts) James was born Oct. 18, 1970, in Clinton, Okla.

She went to be with the Lord on April 12, 2015 in Shawnee, Okla.

Ronda is the daughter of Richard and Maggie Kilgore of Wewoka, Oklahoma and Steve Pitts of Maud, Okla.

She attended Seminole Schools and worked as a DDCA at Oakridge Nursing Home in Wewoka, until her health failed.

Ronda lived a full life in her short 44 years.

Her greatest pleasure was becoming a mother to her daughter Madison.

She loved the 4th of July with family and having fun, especially her brothers chasing her with fireworks.

Ronda loved spending time with family and enjoyed the time she spent with her cousins and great cousins, whom she considered nieces and nephews.

She enjoyed camping, fishing and spending time with her beloved dog, "Toby, " whom she called her "Little Man."

Ronda was truly loved by her family and will be greatly missed by her daughter Madison James of Wewoka, Okla., her parents Richard and Maggie Kilgore of Wewoka, Okla. and Steve Pitts of Maud, Okla., brothers; Charlie Pitts and his wife Shannon of Wewoka, Okla. and Richard Kilgore Jr. of Wewoka, Okla. and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Rhonda was preceded in death by maternal grandparents Frank and Ruth Gore, paternal grandparents Ray and Betty Dorrough, her Aunt Linda Henington and her cousin, Joanie Mooney.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, April 16, 2015 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel and burial will follow at the Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Seminole, Oklahoma. Rev. Glen Peck, of the St. Louis Baptist Church will officiate at the funeral.

Casket bearers will be; Charlie Pitts, Richard Kilgore, Jr., Stephen Kilgore, Teally White, Quinton Pitts and Buddy Henington.

Honorary bearers will be Korrey James, Quinton Pitts III, Matthew Hill, Tate Johnson, Qualen Mariott, Kahaner Mariott and Charles "Boo Boo" James.

Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole is in charge of arrangements.

Loise Jennings

Longtime Seminole resident, Loise Jennings passed away Sunday, Jan. 25 at the age of 108.

She lived through two world wars, 18 presidencies, the Great Depression and the Oklahoma Dust Bowl.

Graveside services were in Duncan, Okla. for family members and friends on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015 at 11:00 a.m.

The oldest of four brothers and one sister, Loise was born Aug. 30, 1906 near Joshua, Tex. to Frances Emmaline (Knottts) Jobe and Early Virgil Jobe.

She graduated from Joshua High School and later moved to Comanche, Okla. with her family.

Loise played the piano in the Comanche church her father founded when she was 16.

Loise later married her high school sweetheart, Robert Jennings in 1926, and moved to the rough-and-tumble Seminole County oilfields.

Loise and Bob raised four daughters: Billye, Pat, Frances and Carole.

Seminole remained her home for nearly 90 years.

She used ingenuity and economy as she skillfully managed a household, raised a family, tended a large vegetable garden and cultivated beautiful flowers.

She was an excellent cook.

Her hands were never idle, crocheting beautiful afghans, producing exquisite cut-work embroidery and creating entire wardrobes for her daughters.

It was not unusual for Loise to sew all night to provide a new dress for one of her daughters to wear the next day.

She renewed her Oklahoma driver’s license at age 99.

The examiner noted he had never passed a driver of her age.

Loise was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, in 1972, and daughters Frances and Billye in 2014.

Surviving family include daughters, Pat (Leon) Short of Seminole, Okla., Carole (Eldon) White of Lake Jackson, Tex., son-in-law James ‘Pinky’ Coates of Shawnee, Okla., son-in-law Jim Upendahl of Stillwater, Okla., brother Earl (Sara) Jobe of Poteau, Okla., sister-in-law Betty Jobe of Tulsa, ten grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren and her adopted son Adnan (Reyne) Tarhoni.

Services are under the supervision of Swearingen Funeral Home, Seminole.

Doyle Johnson

A true son of the red earth of eastern Oklahoma, Doyle Thomas Johnson passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and into the awaiting arms of his Savior, on Jan. 15, 2015.

We know that Doyle was greeted at the gates of Heaven by all of his family members and many friends who have gone on before and were near and dear to him during his long life.

Doyle was born on Nov.3, 1925 in Sapulpa, Okla. to Timothy W. and Izetta (Hart) Johnson.

Doyle’s parents were honored to be founders of the Seminole First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where he became a member at the age of 12.

Doyle grew up and attended school in Seminole, where he participated (and excelled) in every sports activity and was recently voted into the Seminole Football Hall of Fame.

He attended one year at Seminole Junior College and then transferred to Oklahoma State University where he played basketball for Coach Henry Iba as a member of the 1945 National Championship Team.

He returned to Seminole in 1948, where he owned and operated Oklahoma Pump and Oil Well Supply for over 30 years, before selling the business to concentrate on the operation of his oil leases.

During his years in Seminole, he enjoyed playing golf with friends and family, playing bridge and attending the horse races.

In 1994, he moved to Oklahoma City, but continued to cherish and maintain the special ties he had with long term friends and businesses in Seminole.

A member of the First Christian Church of Oklahoma City, Doyle loved God and his country, and was a firm believer in the conservative principles and ideals on which our nation was founded.

Doyle’s love of sports in general was passed on to his children, inspiring a large family of loyal Oklahoma State fans.

He still loved to attend Oklahoma State basketball games and did so as long as he was able.

Doyle also enjoyed the friendship and camaraderie of The Dinner Group in Oklahoma City, and attended as long as his health allowed.

He made traveling an adventure and before illness overtook him, was able to win the contest with his eldest daughter on who would be the first to visit the seven continents!

Doyle was preceded in death by his parents, Timothy and Izetta Johnson; his wife, B.W. Johnson; his brother, Wayne Johnson; his sister, Elaine Bennett; and numerous friends and comrades.

Doyle is survived by his wife, Betty; daughters, Jennifer Freed and husband Rodney of Shawnee, Okla.; Janice Jones of Tulsa, Okla.; and Julia Wood of Tulsa, Okla.; sons David Johnson and wife Tammye of Tulsa, Okla. and Doyle Johnson of St. Louis, Mo.; grandchildren Jason Freed of Portland, Ore.; Joshua Freed and wife Monica of Shawnee, Okla, ; Jessica Freed of Tulsa, Okla.; and Sam Jones of Tulsa, Okla.; great-grandchildren Campbell Freed, Laney Freed and Tayton Harris; brother Roy Johnson on Tulsa, Okla.; and Jim and Teri Hunter of Okla. City, who looked upon (and loved) Doyle as a father in his later years.

Also left to rejoice in his home-going are numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and long-time friends and neighbors.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m.., Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole, Oklahoma with a reception following at the funeral home.

Burial will be at 4:00 p.m. at Maple Grove Cemetery in Seminole, Okla. Rev. Glen Pence will officiate at the funeral service.

Memorial donations may be made in memory of Doyle T. Johnson to; the Temple Historic Preservation Foundation 1733 Sixteenth Street, NW, Washington, D.C. 20009 or the Oklahoma State University Foundation, 400 South Monroe, P.O. Box 1749, Stillwater, Oklahoma 74076-1749 Attn: Cowboy Basketball Program.

Funeral service arrangements are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home, 1001 N. Milt Phillips Ave., in Seminole, Oklahoma.
