Philip Landers
Funeral services for Philip Edward Landers will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2015 in the Okemah High School Panther Dome at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow at the Highland Cemetery in Okemah.
Viewing and visitation will be Wednesday and Thursday, 8:30 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. and Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Parks Brothers Funeral Home.
Philip Edward Landers was extremely proud and happy to be a life-long citizen of his beloved Okemah, Okla.
He was proud of his hometown, his home state, and he greatly enjoyed the oil and gas production industry.
He was born October 30th, 1933 as the first and only son of John and Vilena (Krumme) Landers.
Philip and his sister Phyllis, who was two years younger, grew up in a peaceful and loving family atmosphere.
Philip was active in school and community activities and in high school played on the Okemah High School basketball team.
The summer before his senior year, he joined a wheat harvesting crew as they moved northward; during that experience Philip decided that working in the oil industry might be better than harvesting wheat and he returned to Okemah to complete his education.
In 1948 his father had formed Landers Well Service and Philip began to work on weekends and during school holidays as a hand.
After high school he started in the oil industry as a roughneck and very soon became a driller, the youngest in Oklahoma.
In 1954 he joined his father and uncle, Virgil Landers, at Landers Well Service.
During the late 1950’s Philip was in the National Guard, 45th division, and was stationed on the East Coast for six months.
He served his hometown in 1965-6 as President of the Okemah Jaycees and in 1966 he was recognized by the United States Jaycees as Jaycee of the year.
In 1968-9 he was elected Mayor of Okemah and in 1970-1 he served on the Okemah Utility Board.
After eleven years in the well service business he met his good friend Marvin Musgrove.
In 1965 they formed Landers & Musgrove Oil Company and recompleted their first well that year.
Forty years later they were still going strong.
When Marvin passed in 2007, they had significant production in central and northern Oklahoma as well as Kansas.
Landers Oil & Gas, Inc formed in 2008 and Philip continued on.
Philip was proud to be an active member of the OIPA (Oklahoma Independent Producers Association) and vocal member of the Board of Directors.
Philip had no desire to be an officer, so in recognition of his active and vocal support, he was tabbed OIPA’s Ambassador at Large.
He had a smile, enthusiastic personality, pride, energy and love for the industry that attracted others to join OIPA and to find pleasure in business activities.
In 1992 Governor David Walters appointed Philip as a founding member of the Commission on Marginally Producing Oil & Gas Wells.
He also became active in the OERB Petro Pros, a program whereby producers went into classrooms to teach students about the importance of the industry.
Philip also expressed his love for the Okemah High School programs with strong financial support for scholarships and building projects like the PantherDome. In 1990 he commissioned wood sculptor Clayton Coss to carve the school mascot - a life size crouching panther.
Philip gave it to Okemah High School as a Christmas gift. Philip was also hopeful that the "hot/cold" watertowers might be preserved as well, contributing to the cause.
Philip made his home three miles north of Okemah that he named Rabbit Hollow; he loved the outdoor life and often fished in the two small lakes east of his house.
He really enjoyed hunting deer, in season of course, from his back porch and bedroom window.
Philip Landers was full of love and happiness and certainly enjoyed life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Vilena Landers.
He is survived by his sister, Dr. Phyllis Landers Logsdon, Tulsa; his daughter Cynthia Jean Landers, Tulsa; two sons - Philip Warren Landers and his wife, Susan of Tampa, Florida and Dr. John Landers and his wife Gretchen of Tulsa; eight grandchildren - Angie and Mandi; Brad, Emilee, Jesse; and Derrick, Parker, and Gentry; three great grandchildren and many relatives and friends.
Serving as active pallbearers will be John Landers, Philip W. Landers, Russ Witham, Steve Massey, Andy Tucker and Ed Landers.
Honorary bearers include: Pat Martin, Ron Stepp, John Cassidy, Pete Brown, George Krumme and David Lucas.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Paul’s United Methodist Church Stained or to the Okemah Public Schools Foundation.
Services will be under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Okemah and officiated by Rev. Brian Matthews and Rev. Valerie Steele.
