George Mitchell
Longtime Southern Illinois oil field drilling contractor George N. Mitchell died Thursday at his home in Carmi. He was 84.
The George N. Mitchell Drilling Company started in 1939 when five Mitchell brothers began servicing oil fields in Seminole, Okla., mainly for the Sinclair Oil Company.
During the oil boom of the 1940s, Thomas Mitchell and his four brothers moved to Carmi to form Mitchell Brothers Drilling and Trucking Companies.
Drilling activities began to slow down in the Basin in the 1950s and '60s, and the Mitchell Brothers' partnership dissolved.
The drilling side of the company, with just one rotary rig, continued under the ownership of Thomas A. Mitchell Drilling.
Upon his death, Thomas' widow, two sons and a daughter inherited the company.
One of Thomas' sons, George N. Mitchell, held the drilling company together during the lean times of the '60s.
The company survived under George's leadership and grew into a major Illinois Basin drilling company.
Today, George N. Mitchell Drilling Company employs more than 85 people and operates a fleet of 10 modern drilling and completion rigs capable of drilling vertical wells as deep as 8, 000 feet.
