Maxine Taylor McIntyre, 87, a longtime Baker City resident, died Dec. 16, 2002, at La Center, Wash., where she spent several years in a private home for the aged.
Her funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St. Pastor Susan Barnes of the First Presbyterian Church will officiate. Vault interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery after the service. Visitations will be Friday until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Maxine Irene Brown was born Nov. 23, 1915, at Enterprise to James Asbury and Isobel Wham Brown. When Maxine was very young, she and her family moved to a homestead near Unity. At the age of 10, she and her family moved to Baker City.
Maxine joined the Presbyterian Church on April 5, 1931, where she was an active member throughout her life. She was the Sunday School superintendent for 20 years and was ordained a deacon in 1951. The church was an extremely important part of her life.
On April 25, 1935, Maxine married Claude Taylor. They both worked at the Hotel Baker for several years where Claude was the executive chef. She later worked at Woolworth's, Chaves Grocery Store, and Mack's Jewelers. Claude died on Jan. 2, 1971.
Maxine married Owen "Mac" McIntyre on Feb. 13, 1975. They spent several years involved with the Odd Fellows and Rebekah lodges, both at the local and state levels. Mac died on Nov. 7, 1995.
Maxine was a member of the Baker City Chapter of the Rebekah Lodge. She also was active at the state level.
She was noble grand of the Baker City Lodge several different years and was on the advisory board for Theta Ro, the girls organization of the Rebekah Lodge.
At the state level, she was marshal for Anna LaKamp when she was president of the state lodge. Maxine was involved with the state Ladies Encampment Auxiliary, and was grand matriarch of the state Ladies Auxiliary of the Matriarch Militants.
Maxine enjoyed music, singing in the church choir, sewing, playing bridge, pinochle, knitting, crocheting, family get-togethers and her friends.
She will be dearly missed by everyone she has touched with her love and devotion to life.
Survived include two sons and daughters-in-law, Leslie and Bonnie Taylor of Myrtle Point, and Larry and Lynne Taylor of Baker City; three daughters and sons-in-law, Anita and Keith Miles of Indonesia, Barbara and Dan Wheatley of Woodland, Wash., and Nancy and Jim Case of San Diego; four stepchildren, Karen Yeakley, Lindy Thomas, and Phyllis Cummings, all of Baker City and Clark McIntyre of North Carolina and their families; a sister and brother-in-law, Madge and Carl Singer of Walla Walla, Wash.; 15 grandchildren, nine stepgrandchildren, two great-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces.
Maxine was preceded in death by an infant son, Neil; her first husband, Claude Taylor, in 1971; her second husband, Owen "Mac" McIntyre, in 1995; a sister and brother-in-law, Marie and Harry Estes; and brother, Maurice Brown.

Joe Frericks
Joe A. Frericks, 79, a longtime Baker City resident, died Dec. 16, 2002, at his home after a year-log battle with cancer.
The rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Francis de Sales Cathedral, First and Church streets. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis de Sales Cathedral. The Rev. Robert Irwin of the church will officiate. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. There will be a reception afterward at the Parish Hall at St. Francis de Sales Cathedral.
Visitations will be until 5 p.m. Friday at Gray's West & Co., 1500 Dewey Ave.
Josepf Anton Freriks was born on Nov. 14, 1923, to John A. and Ana Willemson Freriks. The spelling of the last name later was changed when the children of the family attended school. They felt the new spelling was more correct.
Anna and John emigrated from Didam, Holland, to Nebraska. They worked to attain their American citizenship. Mrs. Frericks often commented how proud she was to have achieved that goal.
Joe moved to Baker City with his family in 1938. His father, John, was killed in a truck accident on the Sumpter Highway a few months later. Joe and his six brothers and sisters worked to help their mother support the family through those difficult years.
Joe attended St. Francis Academy until the 11th grade when he joined the National Guard, which was then federalized, and he was in the U.S. Army.
During World War II, he was in the 28th Infantry Division and took part in the Battle of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge, including action in the Huertgen Forest. Joe was proud of his service in the military, and just a few years ago received the medals he had earned but that were not available to give out when he was discharged from the Army.
After the war, Joe received auto-body repair training. He worked for Baker Garage for 14 years before opening his own shop, Joe's Autobody Repair. He operated the shop from 1961 to 1991, when he retired at the age of 68.
Joe was married to Lena Shaw on Oct. 14, 1949. They were married for 53 years when she died on Nov. 9, 2002.
The couple raised their three daughters in Baker City. After their retirement, they enjoyed camping and traveling and activities with their family.
Joe volunteered at the senior center, delivering Meals on Wheels for several years until he became too ill. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, which he joined immediately after returning home from the war. He was a past post commander and served on the board of directors for the Veterans Memorial Club.
He loved hunting deer and elk and was excited the year he was able to bag an antelope. He also enjoyed working with firearms. He was a member of the Powder River Sportsman's Club and participated in many of its shooting competitions over the years.
His favorite activity, however, was collecting firearm cartridges. At one time he had a collection of thousands of cartridges and shells. He also enjoyed building and refinishing guns, woodworking and making gadgets. He had a talent for fixing everything.
Joe was a great father and husband. His sense of humor, practicality and caring ways will be missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lena; his sisters, Elizabeth Frericks and Helen Freriks (an infant); his son-in-law, Bill Hylton; and his nephew, Gary Todd.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Nikki and Russ Rankin, Karen and Steve Cloudt and Mary Jo and Stuart Carpenter; grandchildren, Ryan, Tracy, Mindi and Erica Hylton and David, Christy, Andrea and Amy Cloudt; stepgrandchildren, Becky and Jake Rankin; brothers and sisters, Ted Frericks, Leo Frericks, Connie Fisher, Louise Todd and Ramona Idler; and 16 nieces and nephews.

Erma Powell
Erma V. Powell, 94, a longtime Baker City resident, died Dec. 19, 2002, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Calvary Baptist Church, 2107 Third St. Vault interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. There will be a reception afterward at Calvary Baptist Church.
Visitations will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Gray's West & Co., 1500 Dewey Ave.
Erma Veneva Powell was born on June 13, 1908, at the family ranch on Burnt River near Durkee. Her parents were Florence Boyer and John Fremont Powell, both of whom were children of pioneers.
Erma attended school at Durkee and later graduated from Baker High School. Soon after graduating she became cashier at J.C. Penney where she worked until retiring after 35 years. She then worked at the tax office of the Baker County Courthouse until her second retirement.
Erma was a lifelong member of Calvary Baptist Church and remained active in church groups until recent years. She made many dear friends in her lifetime, and faithfully kept in touch with them.
An avid fisherman and hunter, she had trophies of deer and elk that she brought down and she was very proud of a 24-inch trout she caught in a nearby reservoir.
Erma was preceded in death by her parents, five sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include 20 nieces and nephews and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews and their children.

‘Rusty' Jordan
Merwin "Rusty" Jordan, 88, a former Baker City resident, died Dec. 7, 2002, at Eugene.
No service is planned. Poole Larson is in charge of arrangements.
Rusty was born Nov. 6, 1914, in Washtuckna, Wash., and was the oldest of three sons born to Rosco and Kate Jordan. He grew up in La Grande, later moving to Baker City where he lived for over 40 years and worked as a welder.
In 1941, he married Dorothy Walker of La Grande. He and his wife moved to Eugene in 1996.
Rusty enjoyed spending time outdoors, hunting, fishing, gardening and playing cards. He also enjoyed owning pets over the years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Sue Jordan of Eugene; a son, Patrick Jordan of New Jersey; one granddaughter and one great-grandson; and brother, Delmar Jordan of Kennewick, Wash.
Lucy Dimmick
Lucy A. Dimmick, of La Grande, a former Baker City resident, died Dec. 16, 2002, at Evergreen Health and Rehab Center in La Grande.
Her graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Mount Hope Cemetery. Pastor Art Evans of La Grande's New Life Center-Assembly of God Church in La Grande will officiate.
Mrs. Dimmick was born Oct. 16, 1906, at Linsley, Okla. She was a daughter of Albert J. and Jennie E. Coates Warner. She married Willard R. Reeves in September 1935 at Fay, Okla. They had a son, which died as an infant.
The couple later separated. She met and married James E. Dimmick, an evangelist minister, in Oklahoma during his travels. They were married in 1958 at Raton, N.M., and they settled in Baker City shortly afterward. He died in 1972.
She loved children and always admired people who had them. She loved to quilt and made beautiful ones.
She was preceded in death by her husband, son and family. She is survived by her friends and church family in La Grande and special friends, Terri Folsom of Coos Bay and Art Evans of La Grande.

Dale Millhouse
Dale J. Millhouse, 64, a resident of Baker City, died Dec. 16, 202, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.
Following Dale's wishes, disposition was by cremation at Gray's West Pioneer Crematory. No services will be held.
Dale was born Sept. 1, 1938, to Harry B. and Marie (Miles) Millhouse in Salinas, Calif. He graduated from high school in El Cahon, Calif., and in 1961 he joined the U.S. Army, where he served in Germany during the occupation of Berlin.
Following his discharge from the military in 1964, he continued to reside in California for the next nine years. He worked several different jobs during this time.
In 1973, Dale came to Richland to visit a friend. While visiting, he fell in love with Oregon, along with a lady named Sandie Ming. Shortly thereafter, he packed up and moved to Richland. Dale and Sandie were united in marriage on Oct. 28, 1975, in Weiser, Idaho. The couple were best friends, as well as each other's true love. Dale taught Sandie how to laugh, have fun and truly enjoy life.
When he was 40 years old, he went back to school to formally learn the trade of gunsmithing. With this education, he became a professional gunsmith. Though he had dabbled in gunsmithing for years growing up, he was especially proud to be known as a professional of the trade.
Dale was a member of the V.F.W., the NRA, and the Weatherby Collectors Association. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and just being in the outdoors. In his younger years, he made his own pottery, some of which he won awards for. He also had a passion for skin diving.
Dale lived life one day at a time, and he lived each day to the fullest, despite some physical disabilities. In recent years, however, he had been forced to slow down and take things a bit easier. Dale will be greatly missed by all who knew him, especially his wife, Sandie.
He is survived by his wife, Sandie, of Baker City; a son, Wayne Millhouse of Ogden, Utah; daughters, Debbie Rameriz of Melbourne, Fla., and Lisa Millhouse of Spring Valley, Calif.; stepdaughters, Aimee and Heidi Ming of Napavine, Wash.; daughter-in-law, Cindy Millhouse of Richland; parents, Harry and Marie Millhouse of Spring Valley, Calif.; brothers, Paul Millhouse of Spring Valley, Calif., Roger Millhouse of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Clint Millhouse of Hutchinson, Kan.; lifelong friend, Albert Hodge; best friends, Dudley Norman and Mark Sieckman; his faithful companion Bonz and nine grandchildren.

Bob Taylor
Bob Taylor, 73, of Baker City, died Dec. 12, 2002, at his home.
At this time no services are planned.
Bob was born June 16, 1929, at Walla Walla, Wash., to David Taylor and Mary Ellen Ramsey Taylor Huckins. He lived in many places as a boy. He enlisted in the Air Force when he was 17 years of age, working at the Pentagon most of his service time. After his discharge, he went to barber college, and after graduation he owned barber shops in Coos Bay, Roseburg, Union and Baker City. He also had shops in Melba, Idaho, and Pasco, Wash. He also was a truck driver and excellent cook.
Bob loved music, and at one time has his own band. On March 26, 1984, he married Mary J. Bodewig in Weiser, Idaho.
He was a member of the American Legion, Amvets, and Disabled American Veterans.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Mary, his brother, Ken Taylor, Sr., a sister, Mary Orazine, and his loving companion Missy, who misses him very much, all of Baker City; his children, Lori of La Grande, Patti of California, Rob Reese of Union, Micki Reese of Nebraska, Jimmy David of Virginia, Barb Hellman and Larry Parlin, both of Oregon, Donna Saunders of Pennsylvania, and Debi Parlin of Idaho; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Bob Bodewig, Marvin Bodewig, and Chris Bodewig; step mother-in-law, Emma Bodewig; step sisters-in-law, Twila Combs and Kate Miller; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a favorite aunt, Zella Griffith of Utah.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, a few aunts and uncles, and nephews Dan Benson and David Taylor.

Tom Averett
Tom Joseph Averett, 72, of Austin, a former Baker City resident, died Dec. 13, 2002, at his home.
His memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Driskill Memorial Chapel, 241 S. Canyon Blvd., in John Day. The Rev. Darryl Johnson will officiate.
Mr. Averett was born on Jan. 13, 1930, at Weiser, Idaho, to Ray Henry and Oma White Averett. He lived at Weiser and New Meadows, Idaho, before moving by train to Bates at the age of 6. He lived at Camp Creek near Galena with his family. They lived in a tent in Peter O'Rorke's field for two years before moving to Bates.
He attended elementary schools at Galena, Bates and Baker City and Baker High School.
Mr. Averett worked as a logger, retiring in 1998. He married Rosalee Wright on Aug. 26, 1950, at the United Methodist Church in Baker City.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge. He enjoyed hunting and driving in the country and he loved to spend time with his grandkids and his best friend, Merrit Woodley.
Survivors include his wife, Rosalee Averett of Austin; sons, Dan Averett of Canyon City and Tom Averett of Dundee; a brother, Don Averett of Portland; a sister, Ella Rose Darlington of Pendleton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ray Averett; and his mother, Oma White.

Myrtle Horn
Myrtle E. Horn, 78, a longtime Baker City resident, died in her sleep Dec. 6, 2002, at her home.
Her funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Gray's West & Co., 1500 Dewey Ave. Pastor John Goodyear of the Baker Valley Church of Christ will officiate. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, next to her beloved husband, "Gil, " immediately after the service.
Visitations will be from noon to 8 p.m. Friday at Gray's West & Co.
Myrtle was born on Feb. 7, 1924, at La Grande, the fifth of seven children. She attended schools at Carus, Coos Bay and Oregon City before receiving formal nurse's training at Portland. She worked as a telephone operator and was a nurse at hospitals at Enterprise and Baker City before retiring in the early 1970s.
Myrtle had a great love for volunteerism and serving others. She spent many years as a 4-H leader and judged and served in various capacities and officer positions with the American Legion Auxiliary, 8 & 40, St. Elizabeth Hospital Auxiliary and the Garden Club.
She also offered her knowledge and skill with crafts and handiwork to others, leading a community knitting club that benefited many. She was always ready and eager to accept a new project or to lend a helping hand.
She was preceded in death by Gilbert, her husband of nearly 57 years, who died just six months ago.
Survivors include two daughters, Gayl DelPero and Carol Vonderheit; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a sister, Kaye Lenox; and many nieces, nephews and wonderful friends.
