Wesley E. Bloom, 91, of Baker City, died Nov. 26, 2003, at Meadowbrook Place.
At his request, disposition will be by cremation, and there will be no funeral. Coles Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Bloom was born Jan. 16, 1912, in Brooten, Minn., to John F. and Alice (Kennedy) Bloom. The family moved to Royalton, Minn., where he received his education.
On June 20, 1936, he married Minnie Sweeter in Rice, Minn. The family moved to Baker City in 1941 from Little Falls, Minn. During the early years, he worked for his brother, Red, driving logging trucks as well as driving truck for J.C. Davis in both Baker City and the John Day area. He went to work for Logsdon & Steele, operating heavy equipment for may years. He also worked for Sackos Excavating.
His wife, Minnie, died in 1951. After her death, he worked around the state in various construction jobs. In the early 1960s, he went to work for Oregon Portland Cement at Nelson Point as a heavy equipment operator. He retired from this job in 1977.
Mr. Bloom loved to fish and spent many hours at this pastime. He enjoyed wood working and was known as the "Puzzleman."
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Marilyn Bloom of Baker City; nephews, Gordon Bloom and Ron Bloom and their families, all of Baker City; stepsons, Larry Bruce of Grant, Ala., and Bob Bruce of Minnesota and their families; a stepdaughter, Linda Foss of Poulsbo, Wash.; grandchildren, Desiree Bloom of Baker City, Tony and Carrie Bloom of Dixon, Calif., and Kevin and Darnel Cassidy of Haines; great-grandchildren, Matthew Bloom of Dixon, Kale Cassidy of Haines, and Sasha Bloom of Baker City; stepgreat-grandchildren, Linda, Steven and Amanda of Dixon; and sisters, Ruby Wood of Portland and Avis Pavick of Mason City, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brother and three sisters.

Nancy McCullough
Nancy Gay Russell McCullough, 78, a longtime Baker City resident, died Nov. 24, 2003, in Baker City.
Her memorial service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 2177 First St.
Mrs. McCullough was born Nov. 11, 1925, in Baker City to Erma (Davenport) and Ralph Russell. She graduated from Baker High School in 1944, and completed studies at Mills College, graduating in 1948. Nancy returned home to marry Rod McCullough, who survives her. They were married 53 years.
Mrs. McCullough briefly taught school while her husband worked in the livestock industry. She had a lifelong interest in education, and eventually served on the board of Baker School District 5J. She also was a longtime member of the advisory board for the local Salvation Army. She took particular delight in her weekly volunteer services at St. Elizabeth Hospital.
An avid flower gardener, Nancy always kept a beautiful outdoor garden and yard. She always enjoyed reading, and often sparred the hot topics of the day with any and all comers. These discussions could often involve the other family members. As the only female in a household with a husband and three sons, she could more than hold her own. She only rarely retreated, and never surrendered any family debate.
Phrasing like "For Pat's Sake . . . You bet . . . Dear boy . . . The thing is . . . and that is not the case!" were oft-used words from Nancy McCullough.
She is survived by her husband, Rod, of Baker City; her sons, Charles of Salem, Mike of Powell Butte, and Jim of Baker City; a daughter-in-law, Tina Welch, also of Powell Butte; a sister, Lynn Rowlands of Coronado, Calif.; grandsons, Brian and Joseph McCullough; granddaughters, Rachel and Megan McCullough; and several nieces. Nancy is also survived by numerous friends from her life whom she considered family.

Don Sheppard Jr.
Don Gardner Sheppard, Jr., 83, of Baker City, died Nov. 26, 2003.
At his request, there will be a private family funeral.
Public visitations will be today until 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Gray's West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave.
Don was born May 31, 1920, at Dallas, Ore., to Donald Gardner Sheppard, Sr. and Margaret McKim Sheppard. By the time he was a year old his family had moved to Baker, where he lived until he was 11 years old. At this time he sold newspapers and magazines for Leo Adler. The family lived in Haines for two years before they returned to Baker. When Don was 13 the family moved to Huntington, where he lived until he went to college.
Don met and married Pauline Clipfell Sheppard while at Linfield College. They were married for 63 years. From age 18 to retirement at age 60 he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. Then he operated a real estate office as broker and also had a tax consultant office. He was always interested in civic growth and worked toward this goal.
He was a Paul Harris Fellow with the Rotary Club and served as chairman for the Oregon Trail Regional Museum, resigning just before his death. Don was always concerned for other people and helped many in different ways. When he wasn't helping someone, he found ways to tease family and friends. He was a good husband and father, always putting his family first. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline; three daughters, Mardell McCauley, Donola Thornberg and Shirleen Dunn; four sons-in-law, Bill McCauley, Nils Thornberg, Bill Dunn and Victor Retherford; one sister, Margaret Dick; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert Sheppard; and two daughters, Paula Sue Sheppard and Nelda Sheppard Retherford.

Cleo Greenwood
Cleo Greenwood, 87, of Forest Grove and a former Baker City resident, died Nov. 23, 2003, at the Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro.
Her funeral will Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Forest Grove. Bishop Evan Gibson will officiate.
There will be a private family graveside service Monday at the Union Cemetery in Union.
Cleo was born Dec. 5, 1915, at Webb, Idaho, to John W. and Edith M. Williams Surry. She was raised and educated in Idaho on the family farm near the Nez Perce Indian Reservation.
She moved to Baker City in the 1950s. She enjoyed bowling and was on several leagues over the years.
Cleo was married to Kenneth Greenwood on June 8, 1951, at Ontario. They celebrated 20 years of marriage before his death in 1972. They lived in several places over the years, including Spokane, Wash., and Portland.
She moved to the Cornelius area in 1991 to be near her grandchildren. She lived with her granddaughter, Amy Reed, for several years.
When Cleo was young, she enjoyed going fishing and hunting with her husband. He was in logging, and each summer she would pack up the children and they would all go out in the log truck. They played in the woods while Kenneth was working.
She liked to do quilting and crocheting. All her life she loved to play board games and cards, especially with all of her friends at the the Grove Assisted Living Center, where she had been living most recently.
She was a member of the LDS Church at Forest Grove Second Ward.
Cleo was preceded in death by her daughter, Barbara Bell; sisters, Marian Rice and Elnora Servatius; a brother, John Surry Jr.; and a grandson, Michael Bell.
Survivors include two sons, Ralph Munden of Richland, Mo., and Ronald Greenwood of Imlay City, Mich.; two daughters, Shirley Friend of Baker City and Judith Laird of Spokane, Wash.; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Duane Hunt
Duane Hunt, 51, of Pendleton, a former Baker City resident, died Nov. 23, 2003, at St. Anthony Hospital in Pendleton.
At his request, his remains will be cremated and interred later at Mount Hope Cemetery. Friends and family will gather in his memory from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at 116 S.E. Seventh St. in Pendleton.
Mr. Hunt was born on Feb. 27, 1952, at San Jose, Calif., to Darold and Allene Hunt. He was a 1970 Baker High School graduate and attended Eastern Oregon University at La Grande.
He worked most of his life in the travel trailer industry and recently worked as a dispatcher for Western Homes at Pendleton. He enjoyed the outdoors and fishing and also was a talented artist.
He married Deborah Hutchins and raised a son, Tyler Hunt of Omaha, Neb.
His father, Darold Hunt, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his mother, Allene of Pendleton; brothers, Dennis, and his wife, Colleen, of Pendleton, and Rod and his wife, Susie, of Port Hadlock, Wash.; and three nieces and two nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Pendleton Foundation, the Pendleton Round-Up and Happy Canyon Hall of Fame or an organization of one's choice.
Ruby Ward
Ruby Elizabeth Ward, 81, died Nov. 21, 2003, at Ashley Manor, in Baker City.
Her funeral was at 1 p.m. today at Gray's West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave. Pastors Mike Whitford of the Eagle Christian Church at Eagle, Idaho, and Bob Whiteman of the Baker City Christian Church officiated. Burial will be at the Oak Hill Cemetery, at Quitman, Ga. Those arrangements are pending.
Ruby was born to Tom Howell and Janie Brooks Howell on March 10, 1922, at Monticello, Fla. She was raised at Monticello and attended the Jefferson County schools there.
On July 24, 1937, she married Walter Ward, also of Monticello. Together the couple raised two children.
Over the years she had worked in the local store's meat department and as a telephone switchboard operator, but what she enjoyed most was being a wife and mother. She took great pride and joy in keeping her home and yard immaculate, especially her yard. She loved her flowers and gardening.
The family recalls Ruby awake at 2 o'clock in the morning, a shotgun in hand, waiting to shoot the armadillos for digging up her flowers. Ruby was a very strong-willed woman with her, "I'll tell you right now ..." expressions.
Her strong will and faith in God is what kept her going through her illness when others thought she wouldn't make it. She was a member of the New Life Assembly of God Church at Quitman, Ga. She would attend services every time the church opened its doors.
Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, Walter "Dollar Bill" Ward, in September 1981; three brothers and one sister.
She is survived by her children: daughter, Mary Jane Brattain, and her husband, Tom, of Baker City, and her son, Woodrow Ward, and his wife, Cathy, of Carrabelle, Fla; five granddaughters, Lucy Ward of Tallahassee, Fla., Vicky Stevenson and family of Baker City, Cindy Whitford and family of Emmett, Idaho, Ricky Whiteman and family of Baker City, and Wendy Marks and family of Richland; one brother, Russell Howell, and his wife, Mary Ann, of Thomasville, Ga.; one sister, Maimie Lou Huffmaster of Quitman, Ga.; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.

‘Bill' Hendrick
William "Bill" Hendrick, 75, died Nov. 18, 2003, at St. Elizabeth Care Center in Baker City.
A celebration of his life is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the New Bridge Nazarene Church at New Bridge. There will be a potluck luncheon afterward at the New Bridge Grange.
William G. Hendrick was born on Feb. 27, 1928, at Hood River. He graduated from high school at Richland in 1947 and married his high school sweetheart, Beverly Simonis on Sept. 16 of that year. Bill lived and worked in Eagle Valley, La Grande and Lakeview.
He was an avid archer and rock hound. He loved to camp and fish, enjoyed silversmithing and was an excellent storyteller.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Beverly; a daughter, Sherie Dills, and her husband, Gary; a son, Larry, and his wife, Jan; a son, Michael; grandchildren, Jodi, Ashley, Kari, Greg, Tami and Justin; great-grandson, Cody; his brother, Albert Hendrick; sister, Alberta Darlington; and three nephews and six nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harv and Arvesta Hendrick; and a sister, Gaynell Flynn.

‘Bill' Taylor
Wilfred Raymond "Bill" Taylor, 82, a former North Powder resident, died Nov. 22, 2003, at Boise.
His memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Club, 2005 Valley Ave.
Bill was born at Fernly, Nev., on Aug. 28, 1921. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He worked for many years as a brick mason. He owned the Greenwell Motel at La Grande and the Colonial Motel at Weiser, Idaho, at separate times before retiring in 1986.
He married Cleo Hall on April 11, 1998, and they made their home at North Powder. He also was an avid gardener.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Anita and Samuel Lewis Taylor; his brothers, Sammy Charles and Dale Taylor; and his wife, Ardis, the mother of his children.
Survivors include his wife, Cleo; his son, Michael Raymond; daughters, Nancy Nobles and her husband, Sam, Judy Trent, Leslie Rector, Gloria Brewer and Deborah Taylor; three grandsons, eight granddaughters and 25 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Harold MacLean
Harold E. MacLean, 99, of Baker City, died Nov. 14, 2003.
There will be a celebration of Harold's life for friends and family at 4 p.m. Sunday at Settlers Park Assisted Living Facility. Rev. Susan Barnes of the First Presbyterian Church will officiate.
Harold was born at Battle Creek, Mich., on Jan. 20, 1904, to Hugh and Adelle Getty MacLean. He and his family moved to Grand Rapids, Mich., where he spent his childhood.
He was a 1922 graduate of Union High School. As a child, he designed and constructed playthings for himself and his brother, Donald, who was two years younger. They were athletic, doing stunts on a trapeze in their big barn.
After joining the Press Boys Band, a band for newspaper boys, they became talented musicians. Harold's instrument was the bass brass horn and the sousaphone, commonly called the tuba. He told wonderful stories about John Phillip Sousa coming to a football game and directing the combined bands of Ohio State and Michigan.
After high school, Harold attended Kalamazoo Normal, a teacher's college, and earned his credential to teach drafting and shop at the high school level. He also worked for Leonard Refrigerator Co. at Grand Rapids, Mich., where the Norge refrigerator was developed from an icebox.
He joined the Michigan National Guard and played in the Guard's marching band. After serving two years in the National Guard, Harold returned to school at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and was a member of the marching band. He organized the halftime formations at football games.
He told lots of interesting stories about playing the sousaphone at the university, and afterward playing in orchestras and jazz bands. He played one time on a Ferris wheel at the county fair. He graduated from Michigan in 1932 with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.
In 1937, he married Jean Zwemer and left for a honeymoon in California. They liked the state and stayed there for their first residence. In 1940, their first son, Hugh, was born and they moved to Burbank, Calif. Donald, their second son, was born a few years later.
While in Palos Verdes, Calif., for several years, Harold worked for a vegetable oil company.
In Burbank, Harold went to work with Lockheed Aircraft. He was the final supervisor on the Constellation airplane for 17 years and went to Sunnyvale, Calif., to work for five years on the Polaris missile before his retirement in 1969. He spent a total of 30 years at Lockheed.
After his wife, Jean, died, Harold moved to back to Southern California to be close to his two sons. Harold rekindled a friendship with Ruth Miller Hauter. They were sweethearts in Michigan from high school through college. Harold married Ruth in 1970.
The couple traveled extensively. They visited most U.S. states, including two trips to Alaska. They also went to Australia, New Zealand, through the Panama Canal, and drove all over Europe.
In 2001 they sold their home at Fullerton, Calif., and took residence at Settlers Park in Baker City.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth MacLean; his son, Hugh MacLean, and his wife, Venus; his daughter-in-law, Diane MacLean; and Ruth's son, Woody Hauter, and daughter, Katherine Vaughn.
His son, Donald MacLean, preceded him in death.
