Shirley Wilson

Shirley J. Wilson, 65, of Helena, Mont., died April 4, 2003, at St. Peter's Hospital after a long illness.

Mass of Christian burial was Saturday, April 12, at Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church at East Helena, Mont. Interment was at St. Ann's Cemetery.

Shirley was born at Pampa, Texas, on May 17, 1937, to George and Helen Tilcock. She was later joined by a brother, Don, and a sister, Sherry.

Her father drove truck in heavy hauling, so the family moved quite often. She attended several different schools in several states, graduating at Fillmore, Calif.

She met her husband, Lyle F. Wilson, while visiting her aunt in Ontario. They were married at Fillmore on Oct. 12, 1955. They moved to Payette, Idaho, where Lyle was employed as a meat cutter.

Shirley and Lyle were blessed with three children, Debra, Pamela and Nolon.

Shirley and Lyle moved to East Helena in 1987, where she opened Nana's Daycare in 1989.

Shirley opened her heart and home to anyone who needed love and support. She loved her family, crocheting, her garden, flowers and her church.

Shirley touched many lives and will be sorely missed by all.

She is survived by her husband, Lyle; daughters Debra Lang and her husband, Daniel, of Helena, Mont.; and Pamela Johnson and her husband, Mark, of Missoula, Mont.; her son, Nolon Wilson, and his wife, Julie, of Helena, Mont.; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, all of Montana; her mother, Helen Tilcock, sister, Sherry Younger and her husband, Allen, all of Baker City; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Donald Tilcock, and her father, George Tilcock.

‘Bill' Lambeth

William Franklin "Bill" Lambeth, 87, a longtime Baker City resident, died April 12, 2003, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.

At his request, there will be no funeral. Disposition was by cremation.

Mr. Lambeth was born Nov. 13, 1915, at Whiticha Falls, Texas. He was a son of P. A. and Laura Myrtle Knight Lambeth. He attended schools in Texas and California and after graduating, went to work as a manager for a wholesale electric supply company in Escondido, Calif.

He entered the U.S. Army on June 10, 1943. He was stationed in Europe and fought in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Central Europe and Germany. He was decorated with the World War II Victory Medal, the American Theater Service Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal, and a Bronze Star.

He received a Purple Heart after he was injured by a bomb that exploded at Limburgh. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 31, 1945, as a first lieutenant, combat liaison officer.

On May 30, 1962, he married La Wanda Hall at Carson City, Nev. They continued to live in California until Bill's retirement in 1979, when they moved to Baker City.

He loved to fish and hunt and spent many hours doing so. He was a member of the National Rifle Association.

Survivors include his wife, La Wanda Lambeth of Baker City; his daughters, Ann Kirkland of Jacksonville, Fla., and Linda Simms of Escondido, Calif; his son-in-law, Larry Martin Sr. of Baker City; grandchildren, Larry Martin Jr. and his wife, Candace, of North Powder; and Pam Spencer and her husband, Roger, of Vancouver, Wash., and many other grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, David Chafy; his daughter, Aprildiane Martin; sisters, Ann Lunder and Lillie Cory; and a brother, Oscar K. Lambeth.

Wilma Henner

Wilma Geddes Henner, l00, died Saturday, April 12, 2003.

Her memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Haines Methodist Church. Pastor Sally Wiens of the church will officiate.

Wilma was born on the corner of Madison and Grove streets in Baker City, the daughter of LuLu and Frank Geddes. Her grandfather owned and operated the Geddes-Pollman Butcher Shop on First Street in Baker City.

Later the family moved to the Missouri Flats area, and then again to Hereford where her mother provided the daily lunch for the stage driver and passengers. After receiving her teaching certificate from Baker High School in 1920, she taught school at Muddy Creek

Bertha Warfield Boesch, Oral Ensminger Aldrich, Cora Mae Fidler, Doris Loennig, and Russell Williams were all students of Wilma's. In 1921, she married John E. Henner. They had been married for 65 years when he died in 1986. Her son, John Jr., was born in 1924.

Wilma and her husband, John, shared many interests. Among them were hunting, fishing, huckleberry picking and rock hounding. Some of their rock finds can still be seen today around her house in Haines and beside the Haines City Hall.

In 1939, in Haines, John and Wilma established the Henner Garage where Treeline Woodworking is currently. John and Wilma worked side by side there until they sold it in 1962. Wilma was the "gofer, " driving by herself to Ontario and to La Grande over the old Bidwell Hill road.

Wilma and John were instrumental in helping to establish the Eastern Oregon Museum. They donated many things from their own antique collection to start the infant museum.

In the late '30s, Wilma began braiding rugs using a unique four-braid system that required no sewing together of the braids. Although legally blind in the last 10 years of her life, she continued to braid. Her rugs can be found all over the country.

She was an active member of the Haines Methodist Church, sang at many functions throughout the county and entertained many people as a member of the Senior Citizen Kitchen Band.

It was a great joy for her when her beloved grandson, Jack Henner, and her great-grandson, Brandon, came to live next door to her in Haines and when her great-granddaughter, Lora, came for her yearly visit. Wilma enjoyed gardening, flowers, playing cards and her many dear, dear friends and relatives. She was much beloved and cherished.

Survivors include her grandson, Jack; great-grandson, Brandon; and her great-granddaughter, Lora; many nieces, nephews, and cousins on both the Geddes and Henner sides; and John Sr.'s sister, Edna Jordan, of Grants Pass.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; her son, John Jr.; daughter-in-law, Dorothy; and her two brothers, Otto and Joe.

The family requests no flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Haines Methodist Church, the Eastern Oregon Museum or the Pathway Hospice through Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St. Baker City, OR 97814.

‘Lucky' Miller

Wayne Dale "Lucky" Miller, 76, of Richland, died April 15, 2003, at his home.

A Celebration of Life in his honor will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Richland Christian Church. Gordon Bond will officiate.

Lucky was born Sept. 22, 1926, at Martin County, Minn., to Jay Desmond and Minnie Garrison Miller. He came to Oregon as a young man, where he met his lifelong sweetheart, Dorothy Maxine Jones. They were married at Astoria on Nov. 3, 1945.

Lucky served his country during World War II in the Navy Air Corps. After the war, he and Maxine lived in the Coos Bay area for several years, then moved to Myrtle Point, where they bred and trained Appaloosa horses. They were very active in the Sheriff's Posse and there were many fond memories of the annual Easter Seal trail rides for children, hunting trips and good friends.

In 1983, Lucky and Maxine moved to Eagle Valley, where they had resided since then. Lucky loved the outdoors, and was happiest when he was outside working, either making hay, moving dirt with his tractor, or working on some other project around the place.

He enjoyed the many times he hunted with his good friend, Dave, from Portland, as well as just riding around in the mountains. He and Maxine spent many hours enjoying the mountain air, wildlife, gardening and generally enjoying each other.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine; his son, Dennis Miller and his wife, Linda; and their son, Russell; granddaughter, Missy Reasoner and her husband, Dennis, and their children KyeLeigh, Cory, and Leanna, all of Richland; two sisters, Shirley Sifrit and her husband, Ken, and Nancy Brennon and her husband, Bob; grandchildren, Gail Hanna and her three children, Dwayne Miller, his wife, Tammy, and their three children, Scott Miller, his wife, Christine, and their three children and Matthew Miller and one great-great-grandchild.

Lucky was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lois Sisson; and his daughter, Pam Brunke.

Norma Heward

Norma Heward, 79, of Pocatello, Idaho, and a former Baker City resident, died June 10, 2003, at her home after an extended illness.

Her graveside memorial service for family and friends will be at 11 a.m. MDT Saturday, June 21, at Pocatello's Mountain View Cemetery, section 51 east. The service will be directed by the Downard Hansen Funeral Home.

Norma was born Dec. 25, 1923, at Roosevelt, Utah, the daughter of Nathaniel Edmund and Nellie Stoker Anderson. Her childhood years were spent in Utah, and she graduated from Richfield High School in 1942.

She married Arthur L. Heward on Aug. 30, 1947, at Evanston, Wyo. During their early married life, they lived in many different locations in the Western United States while Art worked for the Morrison Knudsen Co. On Jan. 1, 1954, they moved to Baker City.

Norma worked for the Leo Adler Magazine Co. until her retirement in 1971. She loved the quiet community of Baker City and enjoyed working in her home and yard. Some of her most enjoyable times were spent golfing and playing cards with friends at the Baker City Golf Course.

In June of 2000, Norma and Art moved to Pocatello, Idaho, to be closer to their daughter and family. Norma was a devoted wife, and loving mother and grandmother.

Survivors included her only daughter, JoLynn, and son-in-law, Jack Dunham. She loved being a grandmother and was so fond of her three grandchildren: Kristin McCandless of Denver, Kourtney Dunham of Pocatello, Idaho, and Ryan Dunham of Eureka, Calif. She has one surviving sister, Nell Livingston, of Moroni, Utah, as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 years, Arthur, who died on Nov. 11, 2002; her parents; one sister, Vesta Norris; and a brother, Nat E. Anderson.

Jacquelyn Peake

Jacquelyn Peake, 74, of Whitefish, Mont., and a former Baker City resident, died May 26, 2003, while visiting her daughters in New Jersey.

Author of eight books, numerous magazine articles and several stage plays performed at theaters throughout the country, she was also a noted actress. Jacquelyn was a world traveler who explored dozens of countries, including a volunteer assignment in China.

She enjoyed sharing her knowledge and taught various classes at several colleges. She loved her family, friends, cats and Elvis.

Jacquelyn's many activities included the Stumptown Historical Society, Civil War Society, Screenwriters of the Flathead, Sunday Book Club, Whitefish Theatre Company, and Authors of the Flathead.

Jacquelyn was spirited and dynamic. She always found joy and interest in life, inspiring all who knew her to reach beyond their limits.

Jacquelyn was proud of her children, Diane Hansen, Mary Wright, Randy Biegenwald and Bill Biegenwald, whom she raised by herself. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Brooke, Christopher, Sarah, J.D., Tracy, Missy and Angie.

Memorial donations may be made to Jacquelyn's favorite organizations: community libraries, National Public Television, the Whitefish Theatre Company and The Salvation Army.

Doris Shanley

Doris E. Shanley, 85, a long-time Baker City resident, died June 6, 2003, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.

Her funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Gray's West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave. Pastor Roger Scovil of Baker City Christian Church will officiate. Vault interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. A reception will follow at a family home.

Visitations will be Friday from noon to 8 p.m. at Gray's West.

Doris was born June 15, 1917, to Hope E. and Eliza A. Miller at the family home near Callaway, Neb. She married John Shanley in November 1939 in Brewster, Neb.

They came to Oregon in 1940, living for a short time in both Durkee and Haines before John went to work at Oregon Portland Cement Company at Lime, where they lived for 22 years. They moved to Baker City in 1962.

While at Lime, Doris was a stay-at-home wife and mother and raised the couple's two daughters. She was a member of the Lime Sewing Club for many years.

After the move to Baker City, she worked for Crown Cleaners and Laundry for 12 years as a seamstress. She then began doing alterations for Bohn's clothing store and for residents in Baker City.

An accomplished seamstress, she made many of her own clothes and those of her daughters. In her later years she made many quilts from her scraps. She also enjoyed crocheting, her home, her yard and going for drives in the country.

She is survived by her daughters, Evelyn and Artell Amos of Salem and Leona Grace and her companion, Arvid Hemenway, of Ontario; three grandchildren, John Amos of Portland, Laura Amos of Salem, and Kelly Elder of Carson City, Nev.; five great-grandsons; five brothers, Woodrow and Norman Miller of Mason City, Neb., Ray Miller of Tigard, Bryce Miller of Union, and Morris Miller of Norwalk, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband John Shanley, her parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice in care of Gray's West & Company, P.O. Box 726, Baker City, OR 97814.

Mary LaRue

Mary Belle LaRue, 69, a longtime resident of Halfway, died June 10, 2003, at her home.

Her graveside service will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Pine Haven Cemetery in Halfway. Pastor David Myhill of Pine Valley Christian Assembly will officiate. Vault interment will follow the ceremony.

Mary was born Aug. 24, 1933, in Hopkinton, Iowa. She was a daughter of Manley L. and Florence M. (Davis) Ratcliff. The family moved to Halfway in December of 1935 when Mary was just a baby.

She lived and received her schooling in Halfway, graduating from Halfway High School. Before graduation, she went to work for Ernest and Elaine Huff at the Pine Telephone System in 1950. On Sept. 15, 1951, she married Lester "Bud" LaRue at the Christian Church in Halfway.

Mary worked for the Pine Telephone Company for a total of 45 years and retired in August 1995. After her retirement, she and Bud enjoyed life. She was a loving person and cared deeply for her friends and family. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, VFW Post 7847 in Halfway.

Mary was and is the "best." A kind, loving and loyal wife and mother, honest, generous and genuine to all. She is and will be forever loved and missed.

She is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Lester Earle "Bud" LaRue of Halfway; son, Bert Manley LaRue of Nyssa; daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Daniel Kloss of Albany; grandchildren, Hayden and Mikayla Kloss of Albany; sisters, Berdina Huff of Halfway, Ruth Walters of Hermiston and Betty Tucker of Stanfield; special and long-time friends, the George Fenton families of Umatilla, Jerry and Nona Woods of Hillsboro and Don and Bonnie Vannice of Halfway and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Florence May Davis Ratcliff and Manley Lawton Ratcliff; sisters, Phyllis Ratcliff and Virginia Ratcliff; and brother Manley Ratcliff Jr.

Terry Helman

Terry Helman, 62, of La Grande, died May 30, 2003, at his home.

A celebration of life service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at the La Grande Eagles Lodge.

Mr. Helman was born on Sept. 19, 1940, at La Grande to Virgil and Cleo Campbell Helman. He was a 1958 La Grande High School graduate.

He served with the Oregon National Guard and later became active in the U.S. Army. On Aug. 21, 1961, he married Marilyn Scott at Boise. The marriage later ended in divorce.

On May 7, 1982, he married Carolyn Roberts.

Mr. Helman worked for the Oregon Department of Transportation for 34 years. He had worked in La Grande, Ontario and Pendleton. He retired in 1994 as the district office manager from the La Grande office.

Bowling, hunting and fishing were among his hobbies. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge and was a former member of the Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn of La Grande; children, Kari Brown of La Grande, Darin Helman of Milton-Freewater, Kristi Hagey of Pendleton, Mike Presley of La Grande, Debbie Graham of Umatilla, Don Presley of Oregon City and Julie Henderson of Imbler; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Marla Crabill of Baker City; brothers, Randy Helman of La Grande and Rickey Helman of Wilmington, Calif.; and other relatives and friends.
