Mabel E. Rock, 92, of Hermiston, and former Baker County resident, died July 15, 2003, at her home.
Her memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at the Burns Mortuary Chapel in Hermiston.
Mabel was born on June 26, 1911, on the family ranch at Brogan to Henry and Ida Olk Glascock. She married Gordon Joseph Rock in July of 1929 at Payette, Idaho. They lived at Huntington and Halfway before settling at Bates, which she really enjoyed.
Joe died in 1984 and she moved to Hermiston. She was a member of the New Beginnings Church at Hermiston. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, gardening and the beach.
Survivors include her sons, Don and Gordon Rock, both of Hermiston; a daughter, Nellie Fitch of Salem; four half brothers, Henry, Mike, Martin and Neal; a half sister, Lila; five grandchildren, Paul Fitch, Joette Williams, Travis Rock, James Rock and Susan Rock; and two great-grandchildren, Kimbrie and Skip Williams.

Pauline Dyksterhuis
Pauline Mary Dyksterhuis, 79, a longtime resident of Baker City, died July 15, 2003, at Grande Ronde Hospital in La Grande.
A celebration of life service in honor of Pauline will be held at the Community Connection of Baker County, 2810Þ Cedar St., on Aug. 2 at 6 p.m. Dinner and a little dancing to country tunes will follow.
Pauline was born on May 6, 1924, at Mount Vernon to Joseph and Mary Silvers. A brother and sister were born several years later. She attended a country school called the Belshaw School between Mount Vernon and John Day. She graduated from Grant Union High School in John Day in 1942.
After graduation, Pauline worked at Wayside Market as a bookkeeper, and in September 1945 married Floyd Schouten and moved to his ranch in Seneca. She lived there until Floyd's death a couple years later. After moving back to John Day she began a 19-year career as a telephone operator at the local telephone company.
In 1949 Pauline married Eugene Roberts. They divorced 17 years later. She worked for three years for the city of John Day and several years for Dr. King as a receptionist.
Pauline later married Eugene Dyksterhuis; his job as a soil conservationist transferred them to Baker City in 1971. She went to work for Ellingson Lumber where she worked until her retirement in 1978. Her husband, Gene, died in 1981.
Pauline loved Baker County and enjoyed all it had to offer. She made many friends and spent years as a volunteer at the Oregon Trail Regional Museum, Oregon Trail Interpretive Center, the Senior Center and at St. Elizabeth Health Services where she also acted as treasurer for the hospital auxiliary. She was the president of Business and Professional Women for a couple of years in the late 70s and was an active member for many years.
Pauline loved the outdoors and liked to camp and fish. She loved children and liked to spend time with her great-nieces and great-nephew. She thrived on studying and traveling local areas with special friends and family. She also traveled to Portugal and the Azores Islands several years ago. Her parents immigrated to Grant County from the Azores.
She is survived by her sister, Ernestine Hill of John Day; brother Anthony Silvers of Baker City; nieces, Colleen Hill Hogan of Portland and Celeste Hill-Thomas of the Dalles; a nephew, Mike Hill from Baker City; two great-nieces and one great-nephew.

Marian Martin
Marian Lee Martin, 63, of Bridgeport, died July 1, 2003, at St. Elizabeth Health Services after spending her last couple of months in Boise seeking treatment for cancer at St. Luke's Hospital and the Mountain States Tumor Institute.
Her memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Burnt River Community Church in Unity. Pastor Matthew Schnetz will officiate. There will be a reception afterward at the church.
At the request of her family, disposition was by cremation at Gray's West Pioneer Crematory.
Marian was born Dec. 21, 1939, in California. She worked as a teacher's assistant in Alturas, Calif., for seven years. In 1982, Marian met Gary Martin in Bieber, Calif. Upon Gary's retirement from his job with the state of California in 1989, he sold his ranch there and bought a new one at Bridgeport.
Marian and Gary were married at the house on the ranch that same year. Marian loved the open fireplace in the house and at her request the wedding ceremony took place in front of it.
Marian dearly loved the quail, wild turkey and especially the deer that frequented her yard, and she fed them regularly. She had a favorite doe that returned year after year with twins to nurture them in the safety of the Martin residence.
One winter the snow was so deep that the wild turkeys couldn't lift their feet out of the snow after landing in the yard, and Marian got quite a kick out of watching them tumble about the yard.
Marian was a hard worker and could often be found working on the ranch. She helped her husband feed the cattle in the winter months and she would drive the tractor during haying season in the summers.
She loved to see the children and grandchildren, as they came to visit on Memorial Day and during elk season. Marian also enjoyed cooking large dinners for her favorite holidays: Christmas and Thanksgiving.
Her cocker spaniel, Sammy, for 16 years could always be found at her side.
She is survived by her husband, Gary, of Bridgeport; two sons and their families, Don Lee and his wife, Sandy, and their two sons, Ryan and Kaidon, of Arizona, and Jeff Wells and his wife, Michelle, with their daughter, Jillian, of Redding, Calif.; three stepchildren and their families, Scoop and Neva Martin and their two children, Jake and Tyrel, of Lookout, Calif., Linda and Mike Whillhite and their children, Wendy, Karl, Justin and Kelly, of Klamath Falls, and Matt and Katie Martin and their daughter, Abigail, of La Grande. Three brothers also survive.
Marian was preceded in death by her parents and one son, John Wells.

Melvin Houser Sr.
Melvin Earl Houser Sr., 74, of Nampa, Idaho, formerly of Huntington and Baker City, died July 14, 2003, at his home.
His graveside service will be at 11a.m. Saturday at Mount Hope Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Zeyer Funeral Chapel, 83 N. Midland Blvd., Nampa.
Melvin was the son of Wallace and Della Lane Houser. He was born on May 6, 1929, at Weiser, Idaho, and educated in Huntington. Mel joined the U.S. Navy on Sept. 12, 1950. He was honorably discharged on Aug. 26, 1952.
He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, and a member of the Weiser Elks Lodge and the American Legion.
Mel was a very selfless man giving to those who needed, without thinking twice. He especially loved children and was a firm believer that "You can not give enough hugs."
Survivors include his sons and their spouses, Mel Houser Jr., Raymond and Judy Mitchell, Shawn and Brenda Houser, and Matthew and Tammera Houser; 12 grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and other family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Don.
‘B.C.' Starry
Beverly C. Starry, better known as "B.C" or "Bunk, " 93, a former Baker City resident, died July 1, 2003, at Fresno of lung cancer.
His memorial service was July 9.
B.C. was born on Jan. 14, 1910, at Louisburg, Kan., to Beverly Cashman and Elizabeth Starry. The family included a brother and four sisters.
He married Edith L. Livingston on May 10, 1931, at Louisburg, Kan. They had two children, Beverly Ann and John Livingston Starry.
B.C. worked in Southern California from 1936 to 1944 in the grocery business. The family then moved to Mount Morrison, Colo., to operate their own "Starry's Market." When their daughter became ill, they sold the store and moved to Payette, Idaho, in 1949.
B.C. worked for the Oregon State Employment Service office at Ontario and then was manager of the Baker City office from the mid 1950s to 1972 when he retired.
B.C. and his wife, Edith, were active in the Eastern Star while living in Baker City and had many friends at work, church and through Eastern Star.
B.C. joined the Masonic Blue Lodge at Ontario and Scottish Rite at Baker City. He and Edith served as worthy patron and worthy matron of Eastern Star.
He and his wife moved to Pinedale, Calif., in 1973. They were married 58 years and 11 months. Both were members of Clovis Christian Church.
Edith died on April 10, 1990. Their son, John L. Starry died on June 19, 2001.
In 1999, B.C. moved to Park Kingsburg Apartments at Kingsburg, Calif. He then joined the Selma First Christian Church. He found many good friends after this move, both in the apartments and at the church.
He was a loving and giving man to all he loved and knew. He will be loved and missed always by his family and friends.
Survivors include his daughter, Beverly A. Johnson and her husband, Charles, of Selma, Calif.; six grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; a 99-year-old sister of Louisburg, Kan.; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Ida Kennedy
Ida Belle Kennedy, 82, of Baker City died July 9, 2003, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.
There will be no funeral.
She was born at Durkee on May 5, 1921, to Henry and Almeda Porter. She and her late husband, Carl, were married for 47 years.
Ida spent her entire life in and around Baker City. She and her husband loved the outdoors and spent many hours fishing, camping and hunting.
Survivors include her two sisters, Jessie Surrett of Baker City and Iva Strohl of Rosalla, Wash.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Marie Craig, Leona Goodwin and Alta Phillips; and a brother, Daniel Porter.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to a favorite charity.
‘Judy' Ingram
Jewell L. "Judy" Ingram, 74, a former Baker City resident, died July 8, 2003, at Creston, British Columbia, as a result of a motor vehicle accident.
Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Precht Harrison Funeral Home in Okanogan, Wash. There will be a graveside service after the funeral. A dinner will be served at noon at the Okanogan Senior Center.
Judy was born on Nov. 26, 1928, at Christopher, Ill., to Barton Edward Connor and Roxie Gulley Connor. She had 10 brothers and sisters.
She worked and lived in Chicago during World War II. She traveled to Oregon to live with her brother and to see the West. In 1952, she married Charles Ingram of Vale, a returning soldier.
Charles was foreman for the Russell Ranch at Vale. The couple moved to Baker City in 1956 to manage the Vaughn Ranch. Judy helped Charles in all areas of ranch management, often accepting good-natured teasing for being a "city girl."
Judy worked for the Mercantile Store in Baker City for several years and then accepted a position at Baker Union Ford Tractor Co. where Charles was then working. She and Charles continued to work together, eventually becoming owners in the company.
Highlights of their working career included Judy being the first woman farm equipment salesperson and Charles receiving an honorary doctorate from the New Holland Co. of Pennsylvania.
The couple moved to Omak, Wash., in 1976 and later purchased the Wagon Wheel Cafe at Twisp, Wash. They retired in 1988.
Judy was active at the Omak Senior Center and she enjoyed dancing at all area senior dances. She and some of her many friends traveled to Osoyoos, British Columbia, to the senior center each week to dance with their many Canadian friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles.
Survivors include her children, Jeannette Ingram Hopkins and her husband, Chet, of Okanogan, Wash., James Ingram and his wife, Jenny, of Marysville, Wash., and Jacquie Ingram Hunt and her husband, Rusty, of Coulee City, Wash.; a sister, Fay Morris of Baker City; her grandchildren, who were a source of joy to her, Michelle Hopkins Ogden of Monroe, Wash., Eric Hopkins of Everett, Wash., Kasey and Charles Ingram of Marysville, Wash., Cady and Charles Hunt of Coulee City, Wash.; and one great-grandchild, Tyler Ogden of Monroe, Wash.
John Smith
John Andrew Smith, 87, of Ontario, a former Baker City resident, died July 11, 2003, at his daughter's home, surrounded by his family
His graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Mount Hope Cemetery.
John was born Sept. 9, 1915, at Salt Lake City to Ellen and Robert Smith. He was raised there until he entered the Civilian Conservation Corps at the age of 19. For the next several years he was employed as a general laborer.
John served during World War II in the Merchant Marines (Coast Guard) and was honorably discharged in June of 1944.
John met a nurse, Selma Judi, and they were married at Price, Utah, in 1948. Together they raised one daughter, Claudia.
He was employed all of his life in general labor, construction and as a warehouseman. He worked for Ellingson's Lumber Co. until he retired around 1980.
Recently, John enjoyed music and his family in Ontario. Prior to his decline in health he was an avid walker and rode his two-wheeled bike daily up until the age of 86.
Survivors include his daughter, Claudia Wickert and her husband, Dale, of Ontario; grandson, Brian Wickert of Vale; granddaughter, Lisa Wise and her husband, Jay, of Ontario; sister, Mildred "Mickey" Howell of Woodinville, Wash.; a nephew, Ted Howell, and family also of Woodinville, Wash.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 25 years, Selma; a younger brother, Walt; a half brother, George Terry; and his companion of 21 years, Camille Marr.

Melba Lloyd
Melba Parry Lloyd, 97, of Baker City, July 9, 2003, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.
There will be a private family service at 10 a.m. Saturday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1250 Hughes Lane. Bishop Greg Baxter, 1st Ward, will conduct the service. Friends are invited to Mount Hope Cemetery for the dedication of the grave at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Mrs. Lloyd was born on Jan. 24, 1906, at Grantsville, Utah, to Emma Goddard and Amos McBride. After her schooling, she moved to Winnemucca, Nev., to live with her older sister, Pearl.
While there, she worked as a telephone operator until she met Carl Parry. They were married at Winnemucca on Aug. 18, 1924. They had three children. Later they moved to Reno, Nev., while Carl worked for the power company.
After living in Reno for six years, Carl moved the family to Baker City. He continued to work for the power company until his untimely death. Melba then decided to move back to Salt Lake City to be near her mother, sister, and brother. She met Farrell Lloyd and they were married in 1969.
Melba had many hobbies, such as making hook rugs and crafts, but her favorite was her love of flowers. She worked daily keeping her flower garden beautiful.
After Farrell died, she lived alone until she fell at the age of 93. Her family then moved her back to Baker City to be near a daughter and son.
The highlight of her life was the celebration of her 90th birthday. At that time all family members and many friends helped her to celebrate.
She had been a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all of her life. She would never have thought of missing church as it was very important to her belief in Jesus Christ.
Survivors include her brother, Glen McBride of Salt Lake City; a son, Oral Parry of Spanish Fork, Utah; son and daughter, Darold Parry and Dorene Gwilliam, both of Baker City; niece, Donna Curts of Baker City; nephew, Terry Kelley of Salt Lake City; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Her thoughtful stepchildren include: Elaine Holt, Don Lloyd, Rodney Lloyd, Betty Lee, and many grandchildren all of Salt Lake City, Utah.
She was preceded in death by her father, mother, brother, sister and both husbands: Carl Parry and Farrell Lloyd.
