Florine Tiedemann

Florine P. Tiedemann, 79, a longtime Baker City resident, died Aug. 24, 2003, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.

Recitation of the rosary will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Francis de Sales Cathedral, First and Church streets. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the cathedral. Celebrant will be the Rev. Robert C. Irwin. Vault interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery after the Mass.

Visitations will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St.

Florine was born Oct. 27, 1923, at Baker City to Joe and Irma De Groote, Belgium emigrants. They settled with other relatives at Empire, Mich. Upon the advice of others, they moved to Baker City, where they were told of more opportunities.

Her father worked at the White Pine and Stoddard Lumber companies and the family remained in Baker City for the rest of their lives.

She attended the St. Francis Academy for her entire 12 years of school. From 1942 to 1947, she owned and operated the South Baker Grocery Store, during World War II. The Oregon and Stoddard Lumber Co. and others were doing well and business was very good.

She was said to remark when you went to work "you could never be depressed" because there were so many wonderful customers and friends to inspire you. In other words, "It was just great fun!"

On Sept. 28, 1947, she married Al Tiedemann at St. Francis Cathedral. Al was attending the University of Oregon Dental School and she joined her husband in Portland. While there, she was employed in the office of the Young Oregonian Shop for Meier & Frank.

She was a member of the Catholic Church, St. Elizabeth Auxiliary, Baker City Golf Club, Baker Elks Lodge and the Eastern Oregon Historical Society. She volunteered for various organizations over the years. She loved golf for many years and enjoyed the several bridge clubs and the members' wonderful friendships.

For the past 30 years, she owned several rental homes and enjoyed the involvement. Before her husband's retirement on Jan. 31, 1986, she assisted him at his dental office.

Highlights of her life were her five grandchildren, Al, Don, Jackie, Alexis and Avari, who were a constant delight in her life.

Most of all, she loved her late husband, Al; and her dear children, Bill and Marilee; her sisters Julia De Groote, Mary Claeys and her husband, Raymond, and their families; and her brother, Marcel De Groote, who died at the age of 52, and his wife, Clairene; her sister-in-law, Marjorie Reagan, who she truly loved as a sister; and Marlene Thompson, their little sweetheart who was their flower girl at age 3.

She had a happy life involving some of her pastimes with love for nature, music and many good friends and neighbors. Ultimately, Florine will be remembered as someone who was willing to help anyone, anytime with anything.

Survivors include her children, Bill of Alpharetta, Ga., and Marilee of Pasadena, Calif.; five grandchildren, Al, Don and Jackie Tiedemann of Portland and Alexis and Avari Tiedemann of Alpharetta; sisters, Julia De Groote of Baker City and Mary Claeys of Hillsboro; sisters-in-law, Clairene De Groote of Hillsboro and Marjorie Reagan of Halfway; nieces, Marlene Thompson of Hillsboro, Sharon Howard of McKinnley Villa, Calif., and Susan Rowen of Halfway; nephews, Dr. Robert Claeys of West Linn and Don and Dick Claeys, both of Rock Creek; cousins, Palma Abbott of Yreka, Calif., Stella De Bel of Silverton and Jerry Guthrie.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Baker City Golf Club Tree Fund, Baker Elks Lodge, Baker County Historical Society or a charity of one's choice.

Margaret Marshall

Margaret Marshall, 93, affectionately called "Grandma Margaret, " died Aug. 17, 2003, at her daughter's home in Richland.

A celebration of her life and family gathering will be scheduled later.

Margaret Nora Marshall was born on Sept. 11, 1909, to Edward and Nora Heath Allen at Bethel, Wis. She was raised most of her life at Park Falls, Wis.

Margaret moved to Oregon in 1970. She spent her first four years at Estacada and then moved to Richland. During her life she worked as a caregiver and did so even into her 80s, helping others to be able to stay in their own homes.

Her favorite flower was the iris. She enjoyed gardening, the mountains and oil painting. In 1993 when Margaret was 83, she moved in with her daughter Lucille Burk. It was Margaret's wish to be able to be at home when she died. Her family surrounded her with love and her wish was honored.

Survivors include three children, Mary Emrich, Lucille Burk and Robert Palen; 15 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, and 25 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three grandchildren.

Chad Day

Chad Eric Day, 30, of Redmond, died August 15, 2003.

A visitation for family and friends will be held Thursday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Burns Mortuary of Hermiston, 685 W. Hermiston Ave.

A gathering will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the home of Vicki and Mike Koontz, 924 W. Alder St. in Hermiston.

Private inurnment will be held at the Hermiston Cemetery.

Chad was born Oct. 17, 1972, at Hermiston to Bob and Vicki Clark Day. He was raised and grew up in Hermiston, where he enjoyed playing baseball and soccer and attended Hermiston schools until the 12th grade.

He then moved to Redmond, where he graduated in 1991.

Chad worked in home construction in the Redmond area for a time before moving to Pendleton in 1993, where he worked at the Fleetwood Manufacturing Plant. He worked there until 1996 when he returned to Central Oregon and resumed working in home construction.

Chad was a member of the Christian Church in Redmond, where he was baptized earlier this year.

In the fall of 2002 he traveled to Mexico on missionary work where he headed up construction of a home for a homeless family. It was a high point in his life when he was able to hand over the keys to the house.

Chad enjoyed archery hunting, football, his work and the rodeo.

He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Vicki and Mike Koontz of Hermiston; a daughter, Jessica Day of Ridgefield, Wash.; his fiancee, Vanessa Vaughan of Terrebonne; grandfather, Don Day of Hermiston; grandmother, Mildred Clark of Hermiston; stepgrandparents, Floyd and Connie Williams and Fred and Esther Koontz, all of Baker City; a sister, Monica Hofbauer of Hermiston; stepsister, Kristi Koontz of Florida and stepbrother, Eric Koontz of Redmond.

Chad was preceded in death by his father, Bob Day, in 1988, his grandfather, Guy Clark and his grandmother, Thelma Day.

Dan Warnock Sr.

Dan Warnock Sr., 96, a longtime Sumpter Valley rancher, died Aug. 15, 2003 at St. Elizabeth Care Center.

His graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Sumpter Cemetery. There will be a memorial service afterward at 4 p.m. at the McEwen Community Church. Family and friends are invited to a beef barbeque afterward at the church.

Dan was born on Jan. 30, 1907, at Joseph to Dan W. and Mariah Mortensen Warnock. He was the youngest of nine children.

He was raised on the family cattle and horse ranch on Crow Creek in Wallowa County. His schooling included the Elk Mountain one- room school, Joseph and then Wallowa High School, where he played on the 1924 championship football team. He graduated in 1925.

The breeding of fine thoroughbreds was a passion of his father. Dan rode in many race meets and county fairs throughout Northeastern Oregon as a very young jockey.

After high school, he moved to the Willamette Valley and attended Eugene Business College. A teacher at a local small school caught Dan's fancy and on June 30, 1929, Dan and Alice Brown were married. The union that lasted 73 years until Alice's death a year ago.

Dan worked various jobs including 11 years at the Eugene Farmers Creamery. He always wanted to return to ranching in Eastern Oregon, so Dan traded and raised livestock in order to accumulate enough equity to buy his own place. In 1946, he and Alice were able to purchase a small place in Sumpter Valley and start a cattle ranch. They lived there 56 years.

Dan believed in living every day. In addition to building and working his ranch, he took time to take hunting trips, do lots of fishing (later he did this horseback), enjoy his horses and dogs and work with kids. He led the Powder River Wranglers 4-H Livestock Club for 23 years.

Many folks enjoyed the winter horse-drawn hay rides on his bob-sled or "mule bus." Dan and Alice fostered a niece through high school, were hosts for foreign exchange students and kept Navajo Indians for a work-study program. He was a role model for many young folks, and fondly called "Pa" by many friends and family. In later life, he and Alice took many trips, touring both in this country and internationally.

He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the McEwen Masonic Lodge and the county and state livestock associations. He was the 1969 state of Oregon, "Father of the Year." He has received the Diamond Jubilee excellence in agriculture award from Oregon State University and was nominated several times for the "Old Hand" award at the Haines Fourth of July celebration.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Jo Warnock; son, Edward Warnock; grandchildren Dan, Randy, Terri and Cindy Warnock, Jan Klarquist and Robin Ostby; and nine great- grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Baker County Livestock Producers Foundation (a scholarship fund for qualifying Baker County students), through Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St., Baker City, OR 97814.

Margaret Judkins

Margaret Aliene Judkins, 86, of Ontario, a former Baker City resident, died Aug. 16, 2003, at Ontario.

Her funeral will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Gray's West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave. Pastor Jon Privett of the First Church of the Nazarene will officiate. Vault interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Visitations will be until 8 o'clock tonight at Gray's West & Co. Pioneer Chapel.

Mrs. Judkins was born on Nov. 15, 1916, at Snyder, Texas. She married Robert Garrett Judkins on Nov. 15, 1936, at Snyder, Texas. She enjoyed traveling and gardening.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1998; and by a son, George Murphy Judkins.

Survivors include a granddaughter, Barbara Davis of Payette, Idaho; three grandsons, Gary Judkins of Juneau, Alaska, and Justin T. and Jason D. Judkins, both of Baker City; great-granddaughters, Ashley Ann, Ashley Renee and Audrianna Judkins, all of Haines; great-grandson, Dyllon Judkins of Juneau, Alaska; and two great-great-grandchildren.

David Holman

David William Holman, 82, a Baker City native, died July 10, 2003.

There will be a celebration of his life at Santa Maria, Calif. A memorial service and interment will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Hope Cemetery. A picnic for family and friends is scheduled after the service at 3 p.m. at the home of his nephew, Gary Holman.

David was born in Baker City on Oct. 3, 1920, to Harriett Carter and Fred Holman. He was a 1939 Baker High School graduate. While in school, he enjoyed participating in many sports and was honored as Athlete of the Year.

Dave was a descendant of a pioneer family. His grandmother, Florence Boyer Powell, was the daughter of Thomas and Marietta Boyer, who homesteaded in the Hereford area. He took great pride in his family's history and shared many stories of his ancestors and his own years of growing up in Baker City.

Dave had a distinguished banking career, which began in 1943 at Portland. He held positions in banks in Oregon and then in California and Nevada. He served in various positions at both branch and head office levels, such as executive vice president, loan officer, bank manager and regional vice president.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Jessica; four children; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Tom Holman; and two sisters, Dorothea Mitchell and Marie Wilson.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Carl, Robert, Louis and Wilbert.

Roderick Wright

Roderick Wright, 58, of Tucson, Ariz., and a former Baker City resident, died July 22, 2003.

His funeral was July 26 at Desert Sunset Funeral Home at Tucson.

Roderick was born Aug. 31, 1945, at Ontario to James and Opal McClellan Wright. Growing up he worked in the family bee business, producing and distributing honey. He was a 1964 graduate of Baker High School.

He joined the U.S. Army and later served in the National Guard. He was a graduate of Eastern Oregon State College (now Eastern Oregon University) at La Grande. He taught and coached in the Wallowa School District for 15 years. He taught many grades and subjects, including art, but particularly enjoyed his earth science lectures and had a wonderful collection of rocks and minerals.

In 1987, he moved to Eugene and continued teaching science at Cottage Grove High School until his retirement. He received his master's degree in education from Portland State University in 1994.

Being an athlete, Roderick enjoyed and participated in many fun runs and marathons. He also enjoyed hiking with his friends in the Wallowa and Cascade mountains.

He also enjoyed traveling and exploring geology in other states. He fell in love with Arizona and moved to Tucson in 2001. He was a member of the Tucson Museum of Art, Desert Museum and the Botanical Gardens. He thoroughly enjoyed sharing southern Arizona with friends and family who came to visit. He will be remembered as a kind and gentle man with a sweet spirit who had a wonderful influence.

Survivors include his loving wife, Susan; and daughters, Kyra of Seattle, Wash., and Melissa of Richland, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.

Lydia Haslam

Lydia Haslam, 89, of Pilot Rock, a former Baker City resident, died Aug. 1, 2003, at St. Anthony Hospital in Pendleton.

Her funeral was Aug. 5 at St. Helen's Catholic Church at Pilot Rock. Interment was at the Pilot Rock Cemetery.

Mrs. Haslam was born on Sept. 22, 1913, at Baker City to Belgian immigrants, Alfonse and Irma Delepierre. She grew up in the Baker City area and was a graduate of St. Francis Academy at Baker City.

She married Daniel Homer Haslam on Sept. 3, 1933. He died in 1982.

Mrs. Haslam was active in St. Helen's Catholic Church at Pilot Pock and also at the Pilot Rock Senior Center.

She loved get-togethers with her extended family. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the highlight of her later years.

It was said she would be remembered throughout the area for her "secret recipe" ham sauce, which she generously shared with everyone. Her hand-crocheted and embroidered items were said to be treasured reminders of her creative skills.

Survivors include her children, Cheri, and her husband, Steve Janke of Pilot Rock, Annette, and her husband, Edward Arrieta of Lake Oswego, and Richard, and his wife, Marie Haslam of Pilot Rock; grandchildren, Dan Haslam, Lauri Hummell, Scott Haslam, Kellie McKague, Joni Robbins, J.D. Harrison, Michael Harrison and Sherri Roy; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sisters and brothers, Hilda Lewis of Milwaukie, Marcel Delepierre of Haines, Jeanette Beck of Baker City, Al Delepierre of Portland, Louise Stewart of McCall, Idaho, Loretta Cook of Baker City, Ernie Blair of John Day and Gerard Blair of Baker City.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Homer Haslam in 1982; her parents, Alfonse and Irma Delepierre; a son, Daniel Haslam in 1988; a grandson, Monty Haslam in 1998; and a sister, Mary DeRoest in 1988.

Arrangements were under the direction of Burns Mortuary of Pendleton.

Timothy Porter

Timothy Porter, 30, of San Antonio, Texas, a former Baker City resident, died Aug. 7, 2003, at San Antonio.

His memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Windcrest United Methodist Church in San Antonio.

Tim was born at Colorado Springs, Colo., on Nov. 18, 1972. He moved to Baker City with his family when he was a year and half old. He attended grade school through junior high and part of high school in Baker City. He wrestled in junior high and high school before moving to San Antonio. He was a 1991 graduate of Roosevelt High School.

He loved sports and hunting and fishing. He married Kerry Reid at San Antonio on Dec. 28, 1991. They had two children, Dylan, now age 11, and Taylor, age 9.

Tim and Dylan were very active in sports. They loved going to ball games and Nascar races. Tim served on the Little League Board and was a member of Windcrest United Methodist Church. He was a dedicated and loving husband and father. He was always there for his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Kerry; his son, Dylan; his daughter, Taylor; his mother, Margaret Porter; brothers, Randi, Billy and Robby and his wife, Cheryl; a sister-in-law, Carol; sisters, Nicki and her husband, John, Kandi and her husband, Ken, Tamara, Kricket and Shariah; an uncle and aunt, Jim and Terry Morlock; grandmother, Blanche Porter; many other aunts, uncles and cousins; nephews, Andrew and Jacob; nieces, Kelly, Ashley and Arynn Porter.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Tammy; his father, Billy R.; two grandfathers; two grandmothers; and a stepgrandfather.
