Janice Lucile Hoskins
The journey for Janice (Jan) Hoskins started 92 years ago on September 15, 1917, in Fremont County, Iowa. She was born, Janice Lucile Murphy, to parents Bert E and Alice Blanche Murphy. She grew up on a farm and rode her pony, Shoshone, to a country school of 15 students. She graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1934 and married George Howard Hoskins in 1935. They moved to Los Angeles in 1936. She shared many stories of homesickness mixed with the challenges of WW II including women in the workforce, a husband at war, and raising children alone. She believed these challenges made her stronger. Jan had a long career with Southwest Gas Co. in Victorville, Ca, retiring after 24 yrs as office manager. She was an active leader in several professional business organizations.
Following retirement she moved to Phoenix, Or to be close to her family in the year 1988. The day she arrived in the Rogue Valley she joined a bowling league and signed up to volunteer for the auxiliary at Rogue Valley Medical Center. The auxiliary was important to her especially her tenure in the Critical Care Waiting Room; she finally "retired" at the age 90. She found many friends among her favorite B's: Bingo, Bunco and Bowling. Jan was also a member of the Howard Prairie Resort Family and proudly claimed the status of "cookie lady" making her famous "Grams" homemade chocolate chip cookies filled with ice cream. Her cookies were always in short supply.
This wonderful woman has been a treasure to our family, a role model for faith, strength and patience. She applied her faith in God to everything she did: slow to judge and quick to love unconditionally. She could put a funny spin on every situation and believed laughter was a great medicine. She will want us to remember: "Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and start all over again", "Failure and struggle are only lessons", and "Find the good in everything - it might make someone feel better." Jan was a role model for single parenting by applying solid values and devotion to her children, working hard and serving her Methodist church and community. She was the real deal, solid in her faith, loyal to family and friends and a constant source of fun.
Jan lived a full life reaching out to those in need, generous and tolerant beyond belief. She lived independently with clear thinking and full resolve until her final day. She died in Ashland, following a brief illness; her daughter and son-in-law at her side.
She leaves behind a daughter, Judi (husband Jim Johnston), a son Bill (wife Debbie Hoskins). Four grandchildren; Jana Yates Edic, and Susan Yates Miller, both of Portland, Tara Hoskins Diaz, Clovis, Ca., Aaron Hoskins, Vancouver, Wa. and 8 great grandchildren. Nephews Mike Murphy of Ashland, and Ted Murphy of Lees Summit, Mo. Niece's Peggy Bohnenkamp of Columbia, Mo. and Beverly Miller of St. Joseph Mo. Family member Meredith Murphy of Medford, OR served as an additional "granddaughter" to Jan. She was preceded in death by her grandson Rick Yates in 2007, her parents Bert and Blanche Murphy, brothers Gerald and Lowell.
She will be greatly missed and always remembered with love.
