Elizabeth Theresa Detmer

Elizabeth Theresa "Aunt Becky" Detmer of Yreka died peacefully at Linda Vista Care Center in Ashland, Ore., early Wednesday morning, June 2, 2010 with a nephew by her side.

Her family always called her Becky for reasons no one can recall; her friends knew her as Betty.

Aunt Becky was born to John and Elizabeth Detmer Feb. 23, 1923 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. She spent most of her childhood living at the family home on the Kaal Rock, overlooking the Hudson River on Front Street in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., but her favorite childhood home was on Davis Place, where the family lived for a few years in the 1920s.

As a young child, Aunt Becky loved taking rides in the family car - with her father at the wheel - in the countryside outside Poughkeepsie. Her father, a Polish immigrant, died too young when she was 9, and her oldest sibling Eddie took on the role of father to her, making sure she graduated from high school before he married his fianceé. Aunt Becky's mother died when Aunt Becky was 24.

Beginning in her 20s, Aunt Becky would often travel to New York City to listen to the big bands play. Later, she discovered Nat King Cole's voice and music, and he was her favorite for the rest of her life.

Aunt Becky retired after a long career in the printing trade, first at Western Printing in Poughkeepsie, where she began work during World War II and then, beginning in 1967, at the California state printing plant in Sacramento.

She lived in Sacramento from 1967 until April 2009, when she moved to Yreka to be near nephew Mike Slizewski, her only West Coast relative. She had lived at Brookside Mobile Home Park for most of her Sacramento years.

Aunt Becky was looking forward to another season of the Scott Valley Bank summer concert series after enjoying her first one so much last year. She loved the music, but she really loved watching all the people young and old around her dance, picnic and visit.

She always looked forward to hearing from or receiving a letter, package or especially a visit from nephew Dick Detmer of Geneseo, Ill., who always kept in close contact with her.

Aunt Becky is survived by her three older sisters, Theresa Slizewski, Regina Detmer and Loretta Tulacz; her sister-in-law Helen Detmer; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents John and Elizabeth, her older brothers Eddie and Ray, two sisters named Florence who both died during early childhood long before Aunt Becky was born, her sister-in-law Anna Detmer, her brother-in-law Ed Tulacz, and her beloved French poodle Mimi.

In addition to other loved ones, she also leaves her lifelong dear friend Josephine Nador of Poughkeepsie, and her tablemate, bingomate, puzzlemate and best friend on the West Coast, Maderal Pasero, as well as all of her other good friends at Meadowlark Assisted Living in Yreka, where she spent a very happy final year of her life.

A Mass will be said for her at 12:05 p.m. on Monday, July 5, 2010 at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Poughkeepsie.

A memorial Mass will also be said for her in Yreka at a date to be announced.
