Edna Baxter Taylor Asher
1923-2010

Edna passed away peacefully March 7, 2010 from her battle with melanoma cancer. Edna was born in Taunton, Mass., to Thomas and Mary Baxter Taylor. She was raised in New Jersey and graduated from high school in Nutley, N.J., in 1941. After graduation, Edna joined the Navy in 1943, and served in the naval code and signal lab in Washington DC. She also taught swimming and was a member of the synchronized swimming team. After being honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946, she took a vacation to Southern Oregon and met her soon to be husband of 64 years, Jim Asher. They fell in love and got married in Medford, Ore., on March 2, 1946.

Edna's love of people and Ashland, Ore., led her to become the Welcome Wagon hostess from 1969-1972. She then owned and operated Edna's Book Exchange until her retirement in 1993.

Edna should be best remembered for her zest for life, her unwavering humor and her love of the great outdoors.

She is survived by her husband, Jim; daughter, Janice Decker and son-in-law, Tom, of Klamath Falls; daughter, Kathy Mehlhaff and son-in-law, Darold, of Reno, Nev.; son, Steve Asher and daughter-in-law, Buffie, of Ashland, Ore.; and son, Jerry Asher and daughter-in-law, Julie of Ashland, Ore. She is also survived by her 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Service will be held Saturday, March 13, 2010, at 1:00 p.m., at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home in Ashland. A celebration of life will follow the service and be held at the Ashland Elks Club at 2:00 p.m.

James C. Hutson

James Clyde Hutson, 75, of Ashland, Oregon, went to be with the Lord on January 7, 2010. James was born in Blevins, Arkansas, to Mary and Clyde Hutson. He worked on the family farm until moving to Ashland in 1951. After moving to Oregon, he worked in the timber industry, grading lumber. He married Arline Tripp in 1955 and together they had three children. Soon after his marriage, he joined the Army and was stationed in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Later he continued working at the mill while continuing his education at S.O. College. He then worked in sheet metal until going to work at Ashland Daily Tidings as a print press operator. One of his proudest accomplishments was helping to build the Calvary Baptist Church, where he also served as the head deacon. He was an avid sports fan, coaching his sons' baseball teams.

In 1997, he met and married, the love of his life, Ann Marie Carroll. Throughout his life he was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoying his time outdoors with his family and friends. He enjoyed gardening, spending time with his family, playing games, watching western movies, and playing with his cats.

In addition to his wife, Ann Marie, he is survived by his children, Dan Hutson and Tammy Sowell, Deborah and Steven Smith and Dwes and Brenda Hutson; his sisters, Helen Troutman, Wanda Jo Wood, and Janie Sills and husband, John; seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his baby sister, Bonnie and his nephew, Darell Troutman.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 11th at Phoenix First Baptist Church, 4655 South Pacific Highway at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Ashland Emergency Food Bank, P.O. Box 3578, Ashland, OR 97520.

James S. Matteson

The memorial service for James Swift Matteson II will be held at 4:00 pm Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at the Grace Lutheran Church, Ashland. Officiating will be Rev. Timothy Cartwright. An interment will be held at the Eagle Point National Cemetery, Eagle Point, Oregon.

Mr. Matteson, 89, of Ashland, died Friday, March 5, 2010 at home. He was born December 10, 1920 in Duluth, Minnesota, the son of Harold and Gertrude Riepe Matteson. He was raised in Minnesota and attended Duluth State Teachers College from 1938-40 and transferred to the University of Minnesota where he studied Speech and Theatre Arts.

For 23 years, Mr. Matteson served in the United States Army and retired in 1967 with the rank of Lt Colonel.

On January 12, 1951 in Seattle, WA he married Elizabeth Charlson who survives. In 1980 they moved to Ashland where Jim was a member of the Ashland Rotary Club, serving as Secretary, Club President and District Governor. He also served on the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, was the Fourth of July Parade Chairman for five years, and was Santa in the Christmas Parade for many years.

Surviving in addition to his wife are: sons, James Jeffrey Joslyn of Bakersfield, CA and Richard James Matteson of Los Alamos, NM; daughters, Patricia Louise Malott of Spokane, WA and Susan Lori Matteson of Talent, Oregon. He was preceded in death by William Riepe Matteson and Robert Nolte Matteson, both brothers.

Jean Barbara Glazier

Jean Barbara Glazier, 83, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend went to be with her Lord on Saturday, January 30, 2010. Jean was a listening and caring friend to many over the years. Lovingly she gave from her heart, remembered birthdays, and knit and crocheted numerous baby items for many newborns.

Jean was a faithful employee for Capwells Department Store of Concord, California. After moving to Cave Junction, Oregon in the late 1960's, she waitressed in Kirby and in Cave Junction remembering just what her regular customers liked. Moving finally to Ashland, Oregon in 1969 she worked at Harry and David Company for 36 years. As an artisan, she was a skilled basket weaver.

Jean was born on December 13, 1926 to Paul and Edna Tesch in Oakland, California. On March 29, 1942, Jean was confirmed. Her life verse was Luke 11:28 "Blessed are they that hear the Word of God and keep it". On June 30, 1944, she married Clinton E. Glazier in Concord, California at the Christian Church. Jean became a member of Eastern Star as her husband became a Masonic Lodge member of Concord.

Through the years Jean knit and crocheted miles of yarn. As an avid reader she housed hundreds of books and was knowledgeable of many subjects. The Ashland Senior Center and the Ashland Foursquare Church, Shepherd's Way, became her most recent bond of friends. Jean enjoyed the fellowship and companionship of many.

Jean is survived by her brother Bob Tesch of California; her son David Glazier of Copperas Cove, Texas; two granddaughters, Patti Smith of Missouri and Lisa Mendoza of North Carolina; and five great-grandchildren. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Clinton, in 2007, her granddaughter, Jeanne Glazier, in 2008, and her son Bob Glazier, the same morning of Jean's passing.

Free from pain, able to stand upright and smiling endlessly, she is with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and her heavenly Father.

A viewing will be Sunday, February 7, at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home at 1811 Ashland Street in Ashland, Oregon, from 5 to 7 P.M. The graveside service will follow on Monday, February 8, 2010, at 11:00 A.M., at the Mountain View Cemetery, 440 Normal Avenue, Ashland, Oregon.

Jean hopes to see all of you joining her in heaven.

John A. McCollum

John Alan McCollum passed away on July 10, 2010, at age 85.

John was born in Sioux City, Iowa on December 26, 1924. His family lived in Kalispell, Montana before moving to Ashland, Oregon. John graduated from Ashland High School in 1943. He served in the United States Navy during the final years of World War II.

In 1946, John returned to Ashland and enrolled in Southern Oregon College, where he made two important decisions: (1) marry Helen Storm and (2) become a teacher. As it turned out, both decisions were good ones.

John and Helen were married on June 22, 1947 in Medford. John completed degrees from SOC and University of Oregon in 1949; his master's degree from Oregon State University in 1952; and earned his doctorate of education at University of California-Berkley in 1964. Dr. John A. McCollum EDD returned to Ashland, joined the faculty of SOC, where he taught teacher education for the next 24 years. In his career as a classroom teacher, elementary principal, central office administrator, and college professor John McCollum profoundly impacted the lives of thousands of students.

John and Helen had 5 children: Jeffrey McCollum of Medford, Douglas McCollum of Portland, Marcus McCollum of Ashland, Laurie Danley of Ashland, and Kerry Johnson of San Antonio, TX. John was preceded in death by wife, Helen and son, Douglas. John is survived by 10 grandchildren and (as of June 30, 2010) 1 great-grandchild.

In 1999, John married Frances Hood, who survives. Fran was wife, friend, traveling companion, and comfort during John's final years.

John is also survived by his sister, Lucile Lowman of Medford, age 90.

Friends are invited to attend a celebration/reception on Thursday, July 15, 2010, 4:00 pm at Stevenson Union, Rogue River Room, on the campus of Southern Oregon University.

Kaitlynn Marie Stevenson

Kaitlynn Marie Stevenson went home to be with the Lord on Sat., April 3, 2010. Kaitlynn's battle with Cockayne Syndrome came to a quiet end in her home surrounded by family and friends.

Kaitlynn was born in Medford, Ore., on August 24, 1988, to Mark and Melissa Stevenson. Though never being more then 3 feet tall and 26 pounds, Kaitlynn lived life to the fullest. She confounded all of us on how such a large personality could be packed into such a small body. Kaitlynn loved her family, friends, teachers and her pets, always giving unconditional love and finding humor in all things. Throughout the years, many organizations, teachers, and doctors were a blessing in helping Katy's quality of life and care.

Many thanks to OHSU, Shriners Children's Hospitals, Casey Eye Institute, Southern Oregon Street Rod Assoc., Make-A-Wish, Ronald McDonald House, Southern Oregon ESD and Ashland Pediatrics. A special thanks to all of you who cared for and loved Katy. You know who you are.

Kaitlynn is survived by her mother, Melissa Stevenson, of Talent, Ore., sister, Karissa; father, Mark (Chris) Stevenson, of Grants Pass, Ore.; step-brother and step-sister, Ryan and Tiffany Colley; her Nana, Sharon Shoop; Grandma Byrdie Stevenson; and a life time of friends and family.

Katy's brothers, Mark and Josiah, passed before her. Her grandpa Dave Stevenson was waiting at the gate for her, as he went home weeks before, on February 11, 2010. A graveside service and celebration of Katy's life will be held at Scenic Hills Memorial Park, in Ashland, Ore., Sat., April 10, 2010, at 1:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to any of the great organizations named above. Katy fought the good fight, finished the course and we all kept the faith. She will be in our hearts and thoughts forever. In loving memory, thanks to all, Mark.

Linda K. "Lin" Mattson

Linda Kae (Smith) Mattson was born Jan 8, 1958 in Los Angeles, CA to Richard andPhyllis Smith, the second of three children. After graduating from Culver City High she went to Cal Poly, S.L.O. for just one quarter where she met her eventual husband, Peter. Lin went to five colleges, with Peter following just one step behind, before graduating from Cal State Northridge in June 1979 with a degree in Early Childhood Development. They were married Dec 30, 1978 during Lin's senior year on a beautiful winter morning at the Wayfarer's Chapel on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

Lin so loved to teach young children the joy of reading which she did at Carden Schools in Santa Monica, Camarillo and Santa Barbara CA. Upon moving to Ashland in 1989 she purchased Small Change Children's Store with her mother in law Edith, who passed away in 1995. Lin never stopped teaching as she was an inspiration to all who knew her. Her love, warmth, ever-present smile and all-embracing sense of motherhood reached out to everyone.

She joyfully served mankind through the Christian Science Church which is based upon the principle that God is Love and, that Love is available to and encompasses everyone. Her goal was to make everyone happy and smiles followed her everywhere.

She also served the Rotary Club, the YMCA, the Chamber of Commerce and countless school functions all while rearing three beautiful children.

She is survived by her husband, Peter, daughter Kristin (Ian) Schmidt of Alexandria, VA who has twin daughters Mackenzie and Addison, daughter Jessica (Tucker) Fendon of Laguna Beach, CA, son Clayton (Kari) Mattson of Medford, parents Dick and Phyllis Smith of Cameron Park, CA, sister Susan (Mark) Chichester of Kuwait (but soon to be Ashland), brother Rick (Gretchen) Smith of Malibu, CA, sister-in-law Jane Mattson of Sacramento, CA, brother-in-law Jon (Carol) Mattson of Foresthill, CA and nine wonderful nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to gather at the Ashland Community Center on Saturday, Feb 20 at 1 pm to share the Love and Joy of Lin's life. As Lin wanted love spread everywhere, if you'd like to make a donation, she would want you to open your heart and donate as you are guided. Lloyd Vern Holgate

Lloyd V. Holgate, husband, father, friend, passed away, at home, August 13, 2010 with family by his side. Lloyd was born in Roseburg, OR. August 5, 1931.

His parents were Vern and Juanita Holgate. Lloyd grew up in Sutherlin, OR; attended the University of Oregon; enlisted in the Navy and later graduated from Oregon Institute of Technology. During his military career from 1950 to 1954, Lloyd served in the Unites States Navy on board the USS Boxer and USS Yorktown, Fighter Squadron VF 63 as a plane captain AD3.

In 1957, Lloyd moved to Grants Pass to work for B.K. Herndon & Co., CPA. He later worked for Tischhauser Bubb & Co., CPA; Rogue Valley Data Processing; Harry & David; Tischhauser, Cooper & Co., CPA before opening his own public accounting practice in 1983.

Survivors include his wife, Lani (Fowler), whom he married on August 14, 1976; Eva Morgan, mother of his two sons; Michael Lloyd Holgate of Portland, Oregon and David Vern Holgate of Stevensville, Michigan; his grandchildren Alexa Hogan Holgate (Michael & Laura); Regan Jade Holgate and Austin Chase Holgate (David and Gabrielle).

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Gordon Lee Holgate.

Lloyd enjoyed golfing, reading and his Wednesday lunch group - "The ROMEOS" (Really Old Men Eating Out).

He was a member of the Ashland Elks and a life member of the Masonic Oakland, Oregon Lodge No. 16.

A private family service with military honors will be held at the Eagle Point National Cemetery, Eagle Point, Oregon. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in Lloyd's name to either the Ashland Community Hospital Home Health and Hospice or Oregon Disabled Veterans.

Marilyn Sue Wright

The Memorial Service for Marilyn S. Wright will be held Saturday, May 15, 2010 at 2:00 pm at the Applegate Christian Fellowship in Ruch, Oregon.

Marilyn Wright went to be in the loving arms of our Savior on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 in Medford, Oregon.

Marilyn was born in Detroit, Michigan on July 21, 1941 to Stanley and Dorothy Roppman. She was married to Todd Wright on January 28, 1961. In 1975 they moved to the Rogue Valley, along with their three daughters. Marilyn worked for the Medford school district for 23 years.

Marilyn was a true servant of the Lord and blessed so many lives. She will be remembered as a very sweet, gentle soul.

Marilyn is survived by her husband of 49 years, Todd Wright; daughters, Dawn Roth, Pamela Bartlett, and Carrie Thornton; along with her beautiful grandchildren, Russell, Kacie, Alicia, Lauren, Hannah and Elizabeth.

Akerill, James W.

James W. Akerill

Mr. Akerill, 83, of Ashland, Ore., died Sunday, June 13, 2010, at home. He was born May 29, 1927 in Grants Pass, Ore., the son of Bessie and Milton Akerill.

He was raised in Grants Pass where he graduated from high school. He later earned a master's degree in education. During World War II he served in the United States Navy from 1945 to 1947. On June 10, 1948, in Klamath Falls, Ore., he married the former Betty Martin who preceded him in death in 2008.

Mr. Akerill lived in Ashland since 1948 and taught school at Hoover Elementary in Medford for 35 years, where he was known as Coach or Mr A. Jim was a member of the Ashland Elks Lodge #944 where he was Past Exalted Ruler and the Ashland Masonic Lodge #23, AF&AM. He was an avid golfer, skier, and a member of the Ashland Gun Club. During the summers he worked as a truck driver and river guide.

Surviving are two nieces, Margaret Prior, of Salem, Ore., and Karen Fletcher of Springfield, Ore.; two nephews, Jeffrey Martin, of Springfield, Ore., and Dayn Martin, of Jacksonville, Ore.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

The funeral for James W. Akerill will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 18, 2010, at the Litwiller Simonsen Funeral Home Ashland, with ritualistic rights by Ashland Lodge #23, AF&AM. Entombment will follow at Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ashland Community Hospital Hospice, 1970 Ashland Street, Ashland, OR 97520 or Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association, Inc., 2860 State St., Medford, OR 97501.

Ivis P. Buckingham

Ivis Pauline (Arntsen) Buckingham, 91, of Ashland/Klamath Falls, Oregon, died at her home in Ashland on Sunday, January 24, 2010.

Ivis was born April 13, 1918 in Washburn, Wisconsin. She was the daughter of Martin and Pauline (Mahner) Arntsen.

She married Anthony Roy Buckingham on June 17, 1936 in Besmer, Michigan.

In 1936, Tony and Ivis moved West in search of work. They first moved to Glendale, California and finally moved and settled in the Klamath Falls, Oregon area in 1937. While Tone had a career in the wood products industry, Ivis had a career as wife and mother to her four boys.

She was preceded in death by her son, Tony in 1947, and son, David in 1987, and her husband, Tone, in 1976.

She was a member of both Sacred Heart and St. Pius the Xth Catholic Church, in Klamath Falls, Oregon. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of America.

Ivis is survived by: her sons, Don Buckingham of Ashland, Oregon and Ralph Buckingham of Salem, Oregon; 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.

A private burial will be held at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Klamath Falls, Oregon.

A Mass Celebrating Ivis's life will also be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Saturday January 30, 2010 at 12 pm, with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall.

If you wish, donations may be made to a charity benefitting the Haiti Relief effort, or to your local food bank.

Hazel Edwards Carpenter
March 30, 1918 to August 30, 2010

Hazel Edwards Carpenter, beloved wife and loving mother, passed away Monday, August 30, 2010, in Medford, Ore. She was born in Ico, Ark., the eighth child of Franklin MacDonald Edwards and Carrie Elizabeth Edwards.

Mrs. Carpenter came to the Rogue Valley in 1946. She was a devoted homemaker and dedicated volunteer, finally retiring from delivering meals to old people for Access at the age of 84. She was known for her warm greetings, compassion and conversations with those receiving the meals.

She enjoyed many activities, including fishing, traveling, and visiting with her family and many friends. An early adopter of health food for others, she loved cooking and eating well. No one made better blackberry jelly. Her creation of heirloom lace crochet was a favorite hobby. She wanted everyone to know that, while a lefty, she batted right-handed. The same was true of her rifle practice. Her devotion to family and friends was her primary occupation. As matriarch of the family, she was the focal point of communication and the person everyone turned to for advice. While always the model of propriety and dress, family members remember her for her great sense of fun.

She was a member of the Talent Friends Church and the Mt. Shasta Chapter of Eastern Star

Mrs. Carpenter is survived by her husband, Fred Carpenter; daughter, Mary Tsui(Ted), Monterey County, Calif.; nieces, Maxine Edwards Lane, of Pine Bluff, Ark., Carolyn Edwards Rosa, of Orland, Calif., Dianne Edwards Henderson, of Hot Springs, Ark., and Patricia Edwards Ritchey, of Benton, Ark.; nephew, Calvin Day, of Brenda, Ariz.; first cousin once removed, Joseph Lane, of Belmont, Calif.; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews throughout the country.

Family and friends are invited to attend services at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September, 4, 2010, at Litwiller-Simonsen Mortuary, 1811 Ashland Street, Ashland, Oregon. Interment service will follow at Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland. Funeral Directors: Litwiller-Simonsen.
