Lowell Welburn, 85, passed away peacefully while surrounded by loved ones on July 21, 2010.
Lowell was born to Ralph and Vica Welburn on March 3rd, 1925 in Lebanon, Missouri, and was the 4th of their 16 children. He moved to Talent in 1931, where he was a logger, and later worked in the mills and orchards. He married the love of his life, Betty Jennings, on October 22nd, 1955. He never left her side.
Lowell was an avid outdoorsmen, gardener, and storyteller. He cared deeply about his family. He is survived by his wife Betty, as well as an enormous amount of family and friends who have been fortunate to be blessed by his love.
Memorial services will be held at the Talent Community Center on Saturday, July 24th at 11:00 AM.
Joyce Schmidt
Sylvia Joyce Schmidt went peacefully to God the morning of July 28, 2010. She was born January 29, 1941 in Amboy, Illinois the daughter of Leslie and Mabel Spencer. She graduated from Amboy High School and from McKendree College in Lebanon, Illinois. She married Joseph Schmidt in Chicago April 23, 1963. He preceded her in death September 25, 2009. She was also preceded in death by her parents and by her oldest son, Raymond Schmidt.
Joyce is survived by two daughters, Lee Schmidt of Ashland, Oregon and Susan Teemer of Seattle, Washington and two sons Joe Schmidt of Ashland, Oregon and John Schmidt of Talent, Oregon. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, one sister, Leslie Rose of Champaign, Illinois and one brother, Gary Spencer of Morrison, Illinois.
Joyce was employed by Interfaith Care Community of Medford, Oregon. In her career, she had worked in the fields of addiction, probation, homelessness, advocacy, and supportive services, serving people in the Chicago area, in Oregon, and in Champaign. In 2010, her special joy was cooking for the community meals her church hosted.
Joyce was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Phoenix, Oregon where she served as a Deacon. While in Champaign, she attended Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Phoenix at 1:00 PM on Saturday, August 7th with Reverend Mike Foster officiating. Litwiller - Simonsen Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Memorials may be made to Interfaith Care Community in Medford or to TIMES Center in Champaign, Illinois.
Roger Hall
Friends of Roger "Bunky" Hall were saddened to hear he had passed away at his home in Ashland, Ore., on November 17, 2011. He was born in Ashland, Ore., on May 4, 1930, to Mercy Eleanor (Alexander) and Claud Francis Hall, the last of eight children.
All his school years were in Ashland, where he graduated in 1949. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged in June 1950.
Roger married the love of his life, Nancy Arney, on July 28, 1950. She is the daughter of Marie and Harold Arney.
In December 1950, they moved to Klamath Falls, Ore., when Roger was hired as a groundman for the California-Oregon Power Company. While living there, their three children were born; George Roger, Melinda Lou and Mark William.
He subsequently became a lineman and then transferred to the marketing department. In 1964, he was transferred to the Medford office of Pacific Power and Light Company. The Halls lived in Ashland until 1971, when they were transferred to Pendleton, Ore. They were transferred to Lakeview, Ore., in 1978, where they made many new friends while staying in touch with old friends.
Roger retired from Pacificorp in 1989 while living in Lakeview. Over the years, he loved playing his piano for relaxation, and he enjoyed fishing and hunting with friends and his boys. He learned how to build muzzle loaders. Nancy and Roger remodeled several homes, then decided it would be easier to build new, so they ended up building four homes.
Bunky was always willing to lend a hand and share a laugh. He will be missed.
Roger is survived by his wife, Nancy; children, Roger (Cindy) Krumdieck, of Monmouth, Ore., Melinda (Dave) Slatt, of Pendleton, Ore., Mark (Sue) Knouff, of Vancouver, Wash.; grandchildren, Anjanette Hall, Ryan Hall, Christopher Barnhart, Adam Hall, Travis Hall, Michelle Armon and Jennifer Armon; nieces and nephews, Lynn Garrett Hallock, Sandy Garrett, Judy Hall Ode, James Hall and Claud Hall.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Frank, Jasper, Sidney, James and Jack; and sisters, Marjorie Coppinger and Sally Garrett.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 3, 2011, 2:00 p.m., at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, 1811 Ashland Street, Ashland, Ore. Chaplain Fred Grewe of Ashland Hospice will officiate. In lieu of flowers, please give a donation to a charity of your choice.
Lloyd A. Hayes
The funeral for Lloyd Alvin Hayes will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at the Ashland GracePoint Nazarene. Officiating will be Pastor Jim Curty of the Ashland GracePoint Church of the Nazarene. Interment will follow at Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland. A visitation will be held Monday from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Litwiller - Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.
Mr. Hayes, 92, of Talent, died Monday, February 14, 2011 at the Rogue Valley Medical Center, Medford. Mr. Hayes was born November 25, 1918 in Colby, Washington, the son of Francis and Maude Hayes.
On November 22, 1941 in Nampa, Idaho he married Eda Lavera Hayes who preceded him in death in 2001. Following their marriage they moved to Portland, Oregon.
In 1944 Mr. and Mrs. Hayes moved to Wallowa, Oregon where they pastured the Church of the Nazarene. They later moved to Eugene, OR. From 1951 to 1956 they lived in Arcata, California and Lloyd attended college.
In 1961 they moved to the Rocky Mountain District to pastor churches in Rawlins and Sheridan, Wyo and Sidney and Worden, Mont. They were on the Rocky Mountain District for 13 years.
Mr. and Mrs. Hayes retired from full time ministry in 1985 and moved to Talent, OR where Mr. Hayes worked in the timber industry. He retired in 1998.
Surviving are: two brothers, Warren Hayes of Barrington, Ill and Kenneth Hayes of Davenport, WA; two sisters, Myrtle Hayes of Grants Pass, OR and Zona Newby of Yakima, WA; and several nieces and nephews.

Irene Ethel Welch
Irene, 83, passed away January 6, 2012 at home with her family, friends and animals surrounding her.
A memorial for Irene will be held 2:30 pm, Saturday, January 21st, 2012, at Litwiller – Simonsen Funeral Home, 1811 Ashland Street, Ashland, Oregon.
Irene was born December 26, 1928 in Saratoga, California to William P. and Ethel M. Juhl. She met the love of her life, Bill, while on horseback one day. They got married April 16, 1948 in San Leandro, CA.
Irene had a passion for animals and spent her entire life raising any and all kinds. She also had a passion and love for children. She worked as a secretary, principal and teacher in several different school districts up and down the West Coast and was always involved with youth wherever she was.
Survivors include her daughter Teri, son John and grandson Jeremy and wife Mae and all of her friends she always considered family.
Thanks to all the Doctors, Nurses and Caregivers who were very near and dear to her heart.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Bill, her parents, a sister and a brother.
Helen Hopkins
Helen Weddle Hopkins passed away on November 22, 2011, in Ashland, Ore. She was born in Miamisburg, Ohio, on January 4, 1917, but lived the majority of her life in Cincinnati and Reno and the last year in Ashland.
She was a gifted musician and teacher, a good friend, and a long term member of P.E.O. Her favorite role was wife, mother and grandmother. She married Robert C. Hopkins in Cincinnati, Ohio, on July 7, 1946. He died in 1997.
Helen is survived by her children, Sara (Russ Otte) Hopkins Powell, of Ashland, Ore., Kathy (Roy Mash) Hopkins, of San Rafael, Calif.; grandson, Adam; and two half sisters, Ruth and Rose Mary. She was preceded in death by her son, Stephen Hopkins.
The family wishes to thank Ashland Hospital Hospice, and Linda and Claire, for all their wonderful care.

Dr. William M. Sammons
William Marland Sammons, a physician, civic leader, and a pilot, was cleared for final departure and lifted his wheels on Thursday, December 1, 2011, succumbing to complications following a hip fracture. Dr. Bill, as he was known to many, arrived in Ashland, Ore., as a general practitioner in 1955, and became one of a small group of physicians providing care to what was then a largely rural farming and lumbering community.
In an era without local specialty obstetrical care, he became known for his skill in delivering babies and it was his great joy to bring many Ashlanders and later their own children (and even grandchildren), into this world.
Dr. Bill delighted in serving his fellow pillots by being an F.A.A. medical examiner. In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Bill was active in the community and was instrumental in the construction of the new Ashland Community Hospital in the early 1960s.
Dr. Bill was an avid supporter of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and served on its board. He was a vestryman at Trinity Epicopal Church and served two terms on the Ashland School Board. Later, he was active in the establishment of La Clinica del Valle, and provided many volunteer medical services to the Hispanic community.
Born in Weatherford, Texas, Dr. Bill was a pilot in World War II and flew with the 91st Troop Carrier Squadron of the Army Air Force, leaving the Army with the rank of captain. He subsequently completed his medical education at Tulane University and residency at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. He met his wife, Peggy in New Orleans and they were married in 1948.
Dr. Bill is survived by his children, Laure Trickel, Morgan Sammons (Dan Decena), David Sammons, and Madeleine Fair; four grandchildren, Stefanie Trickel, Karl Trickel, Parker Young and Dominic Sammons; and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, the former Peggy Ann Taylor, who passed away in 2006.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 10, 2011, 11:00 a.m., at Trinity Episcopal Church, in Ashland, Ore. A celebration of his life will occur in the Spring.

Dwight Richard Eckel
Rick Eckel (Dwight Richard Eckel), aged 67, died in a car accident on June 13, 2011, near his home outside of Ashland, Oregon.
He was born March 5, 1944 in Shelby, Iowa, to Dwight and Anne (Horejs) Eckel.
Rick graduated from Shelby-Tennant High School in 1962 and the University of Iowa in 1967.
He earned a Master of Divinity degree at San Francisco Theological Seminary in 1970, and did graduate study in Ancient Near Eastern Languages.
Rick was instrumental in the formation of the Berkeley Runaway Center (Berkeley Youth Alternatives.)
In 1987, Rick became the General Manager of Electronic University Online.
He was on the staff of Oregon State University in Corvallis from 1998-2004.
After retiring, he worked as a website developer in his home office, and managed his vacation rental, "The Meadow House" in the Colestin Valley.
Rick is survived by his father, Dwight Eckel of Tampa, Florida, and two sisters: Kathryn (Eckel) Little of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, and Merrie Jo (Eckel) Crumpley of Memphis, Tennessee. He will be remembered by all who knew him for his generous spirit, youthful disposition, love of music and nature, and his infectious laughter that announced his bountiful joy for life.
From Rick's memoir, he wrote:
"If I hadn't moved to San Francisco, I'd have missed one of the most important events in my life----being there in 1978 with my beloved life partner, Tandy Belew, when the first gay band stepped off onto Market street, greeted by a tearful, screaming crowd of celebrants whose souls and creativity were inspired as the Gay Movement became Gay Culture."
A Celebration of Rick's Life will take place in early August at his home in the Colestin Valley. Harry L. Cook Jr.
Harry L. Cook, 91, of Ashland, died Friday, June 3, 2011 at home, surrounded by family. He was born December 15, 1919 in Portland, Oregon to Harry L. Cook Sr. and Mayme Lillian (Cooper) Cook. He graduated from Alhambra High School in 1938, from Pasadena J.C. in 1943 and from U.S.C. in Los Angeles majoring in economics in 1948. He received his PH.D in economics from Claremont Graduate School (now Claremont University) in Claremont, CA in 1961.
From 1944 to 1946 in WWII he was in the armed services in the ETO, first as sergeant in the 79th Infantry Division and later in the Office of the Theater Chief of Claims in France and Germany stationed on the Champs Elysees in Paris and in the palace in Versailles.
In 1951 he married Lue Anne King in Pasadena. They had two sons, Tavoni (Ty) King Cook and Harry Lee (Lee) Cook.
Mr. Cook and family moved to Ashland from Whittier, California in 1966. He had taught at Whittier College and L.A. State College. In Ashland he was appointed to a position as associate professor of economics at Southern Oregon University, retiring as emeritus professor of economics in 1986. After retiring he and Lue Anne enjoyed several trips to Europe, traveling in England, France, Italy and Hawaii. His hobbies were tennis, big band music and politics.
A dedicated liberal, he has written letters and commentaries in the local papers since 1979. He was one of the original organizers of what is now called the Big Al Tennis Tournament, and one of the first teachers in SOLIR (now called OLLI, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) at Southern Oregon University. He was active in the Methodist church and served as chair of the Board of Trustees, chair of the Finance Committee and president of Methodist Men.
In 1966 Mr. and Mrs. Cook were the 5th resident to move into the Mt Meadows Retirement Community where Harry was on the first Board of Directors for the Mt. Meadows Owners Association. He also served as chairman of the transportation committee and planned resident trips.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Lue Anne Cook of Ashland; beloved sons Ty Cook (Shelley) of Ashland; Lee Cook (Julie) of Portland; 8 grandchildren, Alex, Ellie, Josh, Brent, Kim, Jason, Sharaya and Cody; and 8 great grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, June 25, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church, Ashland.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the First United Methodist Church or the Ashland Community Hospital Hospice.
Audrey A. Shepard
Audrey was born in Nampa, Idaho, on May 28, 1922. She passed away on November 8, 2011, in Medford, Ore. She was 89 years old. She was raised in Grants Pass, Ore., one of four sibilings living in a log house in the country. Audrey graduated from Grants Pass High School in 1942, and attended Marylhurst University in Portland, Ore.
Audrey enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1945, and was part of the WAC (Women's Auxiliary Corp) division, and served as an adminstrative assistant. She recieved a Good Conduct and Victory Medal.
She married Terry Shepard in 1946, and they raised three children, living in Whittier, Calif., for many years and then moving to Ashland, Ore., in the early 1960s, where she lived for most of her adult life.
Audrey worked for over 22 years for the Jackson County Oregon Department of Assessment, retiring in 1988. She worked at the assessment counter, directly with people seeking help with their property assessments. Her knowledge and engaging personality made her very popular with the public.
Her hobbies included cooking, reading, spending time with her family, and, above all, her love of gardening. She was told many times that she had one of the most beautiful gardens in all of Ashland.
Audrey was deeply loved by her family, and she will be forever missed. Full of energy, Audrey had a great sense of humor and a gift for story telling. We will never forget her beautiful smile.
Survivors include, daughters, Linda (David) Roadman, of Central Point, Ore., Barbara Ross (William), of Aurburn, Wash.; grandchildren, Steven Brostad (Brandy), of Medford, Ore., Nichole (Chris) Geiber, of Tualatin, Ore., Kyle Roadman (Sara), of Eugene, Ore., and Ken Shepard, of Medford, Ore.; and great-grandchildren, Peyton, Rylee, Abigail, and Andrew.
Those who preceded Audrey in death were her husband, Terry P. Shepard; and son, Terry L. Shepard. A private momorial service was held at the Eagle Point National Cemetery, Eagle Point, Ore.
Donald Patrick Murray
“The Man was never boring”
Donald Patrick Murray, 79, passed away February 9, 2012 at his home in Ashland, Ore. Don was born to Percy “Pat” and Charlotte (Downs) Murray in Yakima, Wash., on December 25, 1932, joining his sister Nora on a Christmas birthday. Don and Dianne Fagan met in May 1951 at a high school graduation party and married in January 1953, in Seattle, Wash.
Don attended college at Seattle University and earned his B. A. degree. He taught in the Kent School District, outside of Seattle, for 20 years. Don took sabbaticals during his teaching career to accept scholarships to earn a Masters Degree in Counseling and Guidance. Don was a practicing artist in painting and drawing, woodwork, sculpture, pottery and building homes. Don served three years in the U.S. Army Signal Corps Alaska Communications System. In 2011 Don celebrated 30 years of continuous sobriety in Alcoholics Anonymous.
Don is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dianne; his sister Nora Yeoman of Ashland, Ore; his eight children, Elizabeth “Beth” Moreland of Gig Harbor, Wash, Claire McNeely (Denny) of Auburn, Wash, Russell of Missoula, Mont, Christopher of Seattle, Wash, Lynne Hamilton (Bruce) of Bellingham, Wash, Laura NorDyke (Darryl) of Sumner, Wash, Bernard “Ben” ( Karen) of Federal Way, Wash, Matthew (Christine) of Purdy, Wash; 12 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren. A brother Delmar and a grand-daughter Roxanne predeceased him.
A private interment service will be held at Eagle Point National Cemetery. A Celebration of Life Potluck will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2012 from 12 - 4pm at Pioneer Hall, across from Lithia Park in Ashland, Ore.

Dixie Lee Helms
Dixie Lee Helms, 79, of Phoenix, Ore., passed away Saturday, March 19, 2011, at her residence. She was born March 9, 1932, in Cameron, Mo., to Samuel and Ruby (Cousins) Long. She married Bernie Helms on November 3, 1953. For many years she worked as playground supervisor at Phoenix-Talent schools and was known as Grandma Dixie. She also had worked as a grocery store clerk and homemaker.
She was a member of the Good Sam's Club and enjoyed camping, knitting, crossword puzzles, reading and her grandkids.
Survivors include her sons, Allen and Patrick; daughters, JoAnn (Leopaldo), Denise, Mollie (Mike), Connie (Jesus) and Debbie (Joan); 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and 10 step-grand and step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bernie; son, George; and grandson, DeShawn.
The funeral service for Dixie Lee Helms will be held Friday, March 25, 2011, at 1:00 p.m., at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
