William Donald Mackin,
1937-2011

Early on April 20, 2011, W. Don Mackin passed away unexpectedly while sleeping at home in Ashland, Oregon.

Don's life was filled with loved ones, great accomplishments and many adventures. He lived many lives in one through various business pursuits, public leadership and family transitions. Born December 7, 1937 in San Francisco, California to Vernon and Vera Mackin, Don grew up in San Bruno. Between 1955 and 1961, he served two years in the United States Air Force Reserves in Texas, earned his B.A. in Finance from Washington State University, and married Carol Ann Haddock (Lange), of Moscow, Idaho. The couple lived awhile in San Francisco and Seattle where Don initiated his career in banking and as a CPA, with post-graduate work in accounting. They returned to Moscow to raise their children Brian (1962) and Darla Kaye (1967). They divorced in 1984. Don worked in Cable TV management for 15 years, followed by 12 years as Co-owner of Palouse Properties, Inc. (with Betty Jo Neill Hilliard). He represented his industries on the Idaho Commission for Public Broadcasting and the Moscow Chamber of Commerce, including as president. He traveled in Japan and Taiwan. Don's passion for public and community service led him to Chair of the Planning and Zoning Commission, City Councilman, Mayor of Moscow, and then two terms as Idaho State Senator. He chaired the Permanent Building Fund Advisory Council and served on the Idaho Humanities Council and the Foundation for Parks and Lands. He also chaired the Regional Airport board and Latah Alliance for the Mentally Ill board.

During Don's second term in the Senate, Elisabeth Zinser arrived in Moscow (1989) as President of the University of Idaho. Helping to introduce her to the community and state, he found a wonderful colleague and friend, soon to become his life partner. They married on July 14, 1991 in the new University Arboretum. Their life together took them on a 22-year adventure from Moscow to Lexington, Kentucky, and eventually to the Rogue Valley of Oregon in July 2001. They traveled to the east coast, Hawaii, Mexico, Alaska, Ireland, England, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, and South Africa. They immersed themselves in their institutions and communities, local cultures and geographies, formed many friendships and found ways to give back through service. Having attained his real estate license, Don worked in commercial property management for Rosenstein Development, LLC in Lexington, and served on the Opera Company Board. He pursued training and work in mediation. In the Rogue Valley, Don provided commercial real estate advice for Lithia Motors and served on various boards, often as chairman: The Ashland YMCA, Ashland Community Hospital Foundation (receiving the 2009 Distinguished Service Award), Providence Medical Center, Craterian Performances Company, Southern Oregon Regional Economic Development, SOU Schneider Museum of Art, Raider Athletics, Ashland Fiber Network, Ashland Housing Commission, Ashland Facilities Master Plan, Ashland-At-Home, and the Public Safety Bond Committee. Upon retirement, they ramped up time in the wilderness and performing arts, took classes each term, helped with campaigns and fund raisers, and lingered more with family and friends.

Family was Don's top priority. While enjoying his many careers and surroundings, travel and political-legal thriller fiction, he took greatest pleasure and pride in those who he held closest to his heart. As a father, he was a voice of reason, always fair, always encouraging and forever proud. He lived his own childhood along with his grandchildren, while giving them soft, firm guidance and inspiration. As a husband, he was a true and loyal partner, deeply loving and patient, and always a gentleman. He was a man of integrity, conviction, grace, strength and compassion. His unconditional love and support will remain with us all.

Don is survived by his wife of 20 years, Elisabeth Zinser, his children, Brian Mackin (Andrea) and Darla Kaye Sylvester (Jeff), his former wife Carol Anne Lange (Jerry), his grandchildren Conner (18), Kelsey (16), Ian (13) and Kate (11) Mackin, and Amanda Rose (19) and Randy (16) Sylvester, and extended family. His friends, family and colleagues reach across California, Oregon, Kentucky, Idaho and Washington.

Funeral services in Oregon will be held at the Craterian Theatre in Medford on May 7 at 10:30 am. Services in Idaho will be held in the Administration Building Auditorium of the University of Idaho in Moscow on May 15 at 1:00 pm. Receptions will follow.
