Ernest Lawrence Jelley

Ernest Lawrence Jelley passed from these Earthly bonds into the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on August 20, 2012, at home in Ashland, OR after a long struggle with Cancer. Ernest was born April 18, 1937 at Lakeview, OR. He was a most loving husband and father.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Anna Darlene Jelley of Ashland, OR; his 4 children, Ernest Jelley of Roseburg, OR, William (Bill) Jelley of Roseburg, OR, Jacquiline (Jackie) Hansen of Bend, OR, and Karen Stone of American Canyon, CA; his Brother, Caroll Jelley of Ahmednagar India; also by 12 Grandchildren and 7 Great Grandchildren. He was predeceased by Father, Edward Fisher Jelley, and Mother, Margaret Elizabeth Jelley, and Sister, Terry Jelley.

Ernest spent most of his working life as a Mobile Home Park Manager. Whenever jobs were hard to come by Ernest was always willing and eager to work at anything that would provide for his family, never a person to look or wait for the Government or someone to give him a handout. Some of his jobs were, Ranch Hand, Store Clerk, Surveyor Crew, Maintenance Crew, School District Janitor/ Maintenance Man.

Ernest was a member and Deacon of Alliance Bible Chapel, Ashland, OR. His Hobbies and Interests were designing and making things from items found in nature, always looking to make an item of beauty using great talent of working with his hands.

Memorial Service to be conducted at Alliance Bible Chapel, 748 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland, OR on Saturday August 25, 2012 at 2:00pm, Jay Wolfman to Officiate, reception to follow service at the Church.

In lieu of flowers any donations are suggested to be directed to the American Cancer Society.

Elizabeth D. "Betsy" Carlson

Elizabeth (Betsy) Dianne Carlson died March 21, 2013 at Springfield Memorial Hospital in Springfield, Illinois. Betsy was born January 4, 1955 in Salem, Oregon and graduated from Sprague High School. She married and settled near Houston, Texas raising four children. In 2000, she met Gary Newell Adair. They married in 2004 in Houston and in 2006 moved to Springfield, Illinois.

Betsy graduated Summa Cum Laude from University of Texas Health Science Center with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and completed her Ph.D. in Public Health and Gerontology in 2003. Betsy worked as a nurse, a nurse educator, a nurse practitioner, and as a researcher, publishing articles in academic journals. She worked tirelessly to relieve healthcare disparities and conducted research on ways to build trust and Social Capital. Betsy founded Springfield Elder Care to provide much needed service to the geriatric community.

Betsy loved being a mother and grandmother, and enjoyed teaching - from home-teaching her own children to mentoring nursing students. She enjoyed creating art with pastels, walking the family dog Cinnamon, and reading in her sunroom. She also made a darn good apple pie – a family favorite and blue ribbon winner!

She is survived by her husband, Gary Adair, her four children: Jeremy Carlson of Oberlin, Ohio, Nicole Carlson and Rachel Carlson of Houston, Texas, Kathryn Carlson of Santa Rosa, Florida, her sisters Janet Steveley of Ashland, Oregon, and Sarah Rogers of Antigua, Guatemala, and her two grandchildren, Maximillian and Benjamin Carlson. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elizabeth Ruth Thompson and William Geymer Steveley, her brother Douglas W. Steveley, and her sister, Patricia A. Codron.

A memorial service was held at the Cathedral Church of Saint Paul, 815 South Second Street in Springfield on Sunday, March 24 at 2:00 p.m.. If sending flowers, please send to family home as the church will be decorated for Palm Sunday. Betsy will be laid to rest in Ashland, OR at the Mountain View Cemetery at 3:00 pm Friday, March 29, 2013.

Leonilde "Nilde" Maria Louise Callahan

The Funeral Mass for Nilde Callahan will be held at 12:00 noon, Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church, 987 Hillview Drive, Ashland, Ore. Father Sean Weeks will officiate. Interment will follow in Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland, Oregon.

Those who wish may pay their respects from 9:00 am to 11:00 am Tuesday, May 29th at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home 1811 Ashland Street, Ashland, Ore.

LEONILDE “NILDE” MARIA LOUISE CALLAHAN, 89, formerly of Ashland, passed away Monday, May 21, 2012 at Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass, Ore.

Nilde was born November 8, 1922 in Cavaso del Tomba, Italy. On September 10, 1951 in Ashland, Ore., she married Don Callahan. Together they owned and operated Callahan’s Restaurant. Nilde enjoyed quilting, gardening, cooking and bouncing grandkids on her knee.

Survivors include sons, Gary, Rick, Randy and Brian; eleven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and sister, Olga Rossetto. She was preceded in death by her husband, Don Callahan, son Mark Callahan and brother, Gildo Cervellin.

Memorial contributions may be made to your local hospice organization.

Frederick H. Kannasto

A Memorial Service for Fred H. Kannasto will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, October 27, 2012 at the Christian Church of Ashland, 318 “B” Street, Ashland, Oregon.

Mr. Kannasto, 86, died September 18, 2012 at the Laurel Pines Retirement Lodge, White City, Oregon where he had been a resident for several months.

Fred was born May 2, 1926 in Ashland, Oregon, the son of John and Mary Kannasto. He received all of his public school education in Ashland, having graduated from Ashland High School in 1944.

While at Ashland High School, Fred participated in team sports. In his senior year, both the football and basketball teams enjoyed winning seasons, with the biggest prize going to the Ashland High School basketball team winning the 1944 Oregon state high school basketball championship.

After Fred’s high school graduation in 1944, he joined the U. S. Marine Corp where he received his basic training at Camp Pendleton, San Diego, California. After finishing basic training Fred was assigned to the 3rd Marine Division that was shipped to the ongoing South Pacific war. During the last twelve months of World War II his Marine unit was then deployed to fight in the brutal battle for the ultimate conquest of the small island of Iwo Jima.

At the end of World War II in 1945 Fred returned to Ashland and enrolled at Southern Oregon College. While at college he was also a member of the 1946 undefeated football team.

For approximately twenty years Fred was a member of the Lords and Ladies Square Dance Club. This group performed at several different venues throughout Southern Oregon. Also, an important member of the club was Fred’s long-time dance partner, the late Hazel Rice.

Fred was a lifetime member of the Ashland Christian Church where he enjoyed bible study, church social activities and the Sunday sermons given by Pastor Jim Larson.

Fred grew up in a large family of siblings; five sisters and four brothers. The remaining surviving family members are Dolly Desantis, San Mateo, California; Raymond Kannasto, Salem, Oregon; and Harry Kannasto, Ashland, Oregon. Fred is also survived by a large number of nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Ashland Christian Church.

Keith Walter Corp

Keith Walter Corp Jr. was born in Salinas, Calif., November 22, 1940, to Keith Walter Corp and Margaret E. Corp.

Keith lived in the Rogue Valley since 1967. He graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, in Ag Engineering. He came up to help on the family ranch, purchased in 1947, and never left. He had been a farmer, rancher, and engineer all his life. His pride and his design is a gravity-fed irrigation system that which runs 10 wheelines with pressures of 80 psi.

He served on the TID Board, the Grange Co-op Board, and Jackson County Soil and Water Conservation District Board. He was part of SB 1010, WISE (a water project) FARRM (Farm and Ranch Management group). He was proud to give back to the community in which he lived, and was one of the valley's primo baler mechanics (in that he will be sorely missed). He had many, many friends who visited him in his last days. THANK YOU!

He is survived by his mother, Margaret E. Corp; wife, Marsha MacCormack; sister, Janet E. Corp; brother, Terrance (Sue); his sons, Joe W. Corp (Leslie), and their daughter Danica; Christopher Corp; and James MacCormack.

He will be greatly missed.

No memorial service is planned at this time.

Andy Green

Andrew R. Green, 64, of Ashland, OR, entered into glory surrounded by his family on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at his home.

He was born March 9, 1948 in Glendale, CA, the only son of Harold A. Green and Harriette Cheatham Green. His youth was spent primarily in Southern California with the exception of 1 year in England at age 11 when his father was employed by Douglas Aircraft. He graduated from Marina High School, Huntington Beach, CA in 1966.

He began his ministry as a young pastor sent out and ordained by Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa in 1977. He started his radio career at Country station KSNO, Alturas, CA in 1973.

That opened the door for a job on Christian radio station KDOV, Ashland, OR in 1975. Andy developed two radio shows down through the years “Rock of Ages” on secular classic rock stations and “Simple Truth” a daily Bible study, airing across the nation on numerous radio outlets.

Through radio Andy became acquainted with many Christian musical artists. Through concerts and outreaches a young church was started. He was the founding Pastor of Ashland Christian Fellowship from 1976 – 2000. He began two more churches; Ashland Chapel 2001-2007; South Beach Chapel in South Beach, OR from 2007-2009. In 2009 while working in conjunction with Calvary Chapel South Maui, he taught a Men’s Bible Study on the beach in Maui. In January 2012, he returned to the Rogue Valley to join the staff of Table Rock Fellowship, Medford and to teach Wednesday night studies “Victory in Jesus”.

He was an avid tennis player but his love of surfing eclipsed all other sports.

Andy is survived by his wife Katie; his children, Aaron Green (Jennifer) Beaverton, OR; Sarah Schwarz (Eric) Beaverton, OR; Jon Green, Beaverton, OR; Peter Green, Lakewood, CA; stepdaughters Janelle Chapman, Ashland, OR; Valerie Nelson (Justin) Honolulu, HI; Abbie Chapman, San Diego, CA; and 4 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be held, Saturday, July 14, 2012 at 1 pm at the Butler Bandshell in Lithia Park, Ashland, with Pastor Tom Sabens of Table Rock Fellowship officiating.

Patrick Robert Galligan

Patrick Robert Galligan, 43, passed away August 10, 2012. Patrick is survived by his mother, Elizabeth Colbert; brothers, Christopher Galligan and Tiimothy Galligan; sister, Bridget Whitted; and stepbrothers, Franklin Colbert, Cyrus Colbert, Benjamin Colbert, Alex Colbert, and Ian Colbert.

Born July 4, 1969, in Detroit, Mich., Patrick was raised in Oakland County, Mich., and graduated from Brother Rice High School. He lived in Detroit and San Diego, Calif. before moving and settling in Ashland, Ore.

With a wonderful sense of humor, Patrick loved being active and pursued skiing, surfing, and biking. Possessing a love of people, he befriended anyone who crossed his path. Patrick loved life and life loved him. He could make anyone laugh. His bright spirit will be terribly missed.

Services will be held Thursday, August 16, 2012, at 4:30 at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home.

Gertie Gertrude Gwendolyn Hess

Gertie Gwendolyn Hess, who lived her entire life in Ashland, Ore., passed away Easter Sunday, April 8, 2012, at the age of 90, at Ashland Creekside Adult Foster Home with her family by her side. She was born April 10, 1921, to Gerald Houtz and Grace Corinne Wenner, in Ashland.

Gertie attended Lincoln Elementary School from the time of its opening in 1927. She was active in Campfire Girls, camping, and dancing, sometimes performing at the old Lithia Theater. At age 17 she was crowned Miss Ashland and as part of her duties helped dedicate the "new" Varsity Theater and the Siskiyou Highway (present-day I-5). Later that year she christened a new Greyhound Bus that was first to use that highway. After high school, she attended Southern Oregon Normal School and also worked at Ingle's Drug in downtown Ashland. In 1941, Gertie married Parker Hess, the love of her life. They enjoyed 70 years of marriage until Parker's passing last year.

During World War II, while Parker was stationed in the Navy in San Francisco, Calif., Gertie kept life going at home. She and Parker raised three children, Steve, Tod, and Susan. Gertie chose to stay home to raise her family. She was not only active in her family's life, but also in local civic organizations, including the Ashland Garden Club, Chapter BN PEO where she served as president, Parent-Teacher Association, the American Red Cross, High School Advisory Board, Parks and Recreation Board, Hospital Auxiliary, Ashland High School Alumni Association, Cub Scout den mother, and nominee for Woman of the Year in Ashland in the early 1960s. She also attended the Methodist and Presbyterian Churches. One of her greatest honors was serving as Grand Marshal of Ashland's 4th of July parade with Parker in 2006.

Gertie's family is left with a lifetime of loving memories. She will be remembered by her family for the many things she truly loved, the first of which was her family. She loved the outdoors and spent many a day on picnics, making special sandwiches from a secret recipe. She and Parker took daily walks around Ashland. Their favorite place was Lithia Park. They enjoyed traveling, especially to the Oregon Coast and visiting various locations across the U.S. Gertie loved horseback riding, bicycling, tennis, and was passionate about gardening, a place in which she found great solitude and pleasure. Gertie was a lifelong swimmer and reached her goal of swimming 100 miles to achieve her Red Cross endorsement. She enjoyed fishing, loved to read, collect rocks, and took pleasure in sewing, knitting, and needlework. She loved collecting antiques and refinishing furniture. Gertie was always available to listen to her kids and grandkids. She will be remembered for her wisdom, kindness, intelligence, quick wit, and grace, all of which she maintained until the end.

Gertie was preceded in death by her husband, Parker Hess, and her parents. She is survived by two sisters, Geraldine Jones, of Ashland and Gloria Page, of Roseburg, Ore.; two sons, Steve (Billie) Hess, of Sun City West, Ariz., and Tod (Peggy) Hess, of Beaverton, Ore.; a daughter, Susan Yates, of Ashland; six grandchildren, Natalie (Glen) Long, Stephanie (Mark) Spohnhauer, Paul (Tam) Hess, Mark (MinhHai) Hess, Frank Honts, and Melinda (Chris) Williamson; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A private ceremony of life was held by the family. Thank you, Nana, for all the wonderful memories.

Gertie's family will honor their mother with the planting of a tree at Lincoln School and the dedication of a park bench at the lower duck pond in Lithia Park later this summer.

Barbara Yvonne Cloer

Barbara Cloer, 89, passed away December 21, 2012, at home. She had been on and off of hospice care over a period of five years after a series of strokes.

Barbara's father was Eastman Kenneth Gorton and her mother was Althea Glenn Gorton. A younger sister, Jean Gorton, lives in Bellingham, Wash., and a niece, Gabrielle Gallegos, lives in Washington, DC. Her loving husband, Hal Cloer, passed away October 5, 2012. Her mother, father, an older brother, her younger son, and two grandsons predeceased her.

She married William M. Rankin in 1942, at the beginning of WWII, later raising two sons while partnering with her husband and parents in running Gorton's Ice Cream and Candy store in Fresno, Calif. Barbara's older son, Bill Rankin, and daughter-in law, Denise, have three sons, Chad, Craig, and Will. She is also survived by her younger son's children, Brian and Patrick Rankin.

Barbara went on to graduate summa cum laude in psychology at Fresno State University in 1964, and became a vocational rehabilitation counselor for the State of California.

While attending a summer program on counseling the deaf at Western Oregon University, she met Hal Cloer, professor of psychology at Southern Oregon University. They were married in 1968.

Upon moving to Ashland in 1968, Barbara worked for the Oregon Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, managing the Medford office in 1970. She served as secretary of the Jackson County Head Start Board; was on the County Human Resources Committee; the Jackson/Josephine County Job Council; and inspected convalescent homes for health, education and welfare. In 1976, Barbara founded the Gorton's Gifts and Gourmet store in Medford, introducing major cookware products to the Rogue Valley and developing a successful business. She sold the store in 1982, when her husband retired and wanted to travel. In 1983, they made a three-month, 15, 000 mile trip around the U. S. Subsequently, they made six trips to Europe, five trips to Mexico, two to Asia, three to Canada, and cruised the Panama Canal.

After retiring, Barbara enjoyed golf, duplicate bridge, camping trips and travels with her grandsons and time with her many friends. At various times she was a Pink Lady at Ashland Community Hospital, a member of AAUW, the Ashland Study Club, president of her investment club, an active member of the Ashland Women's Golf Club, a board member and treasurer of the Tudor Guild, and a member of three ACBL duplicate bridge groups.

Special thanks go to members of Barbara's longtime caregiver team, to the case managers, and to the entire Hospice staff.

For those wishing to celebrate Barbara's life, a memorial celebration for her and Hal's lives will be held at the Mountain Meadows Clubhouse on the afternoon of February 16, 2013 at 2:00 pm.

Pearl Ruth Ferguson

Pearl Ruth Gomer Ferguson, 87, a resident of Ashland for the past three years, passed away Friday, October 26, 2012. Pearl moved to Ashland in 2009 with Vincent, her husband of 66 years. They were residents of the Mountain Meadows Community before injuries caused them to relocate.

Pearl was originally from St. Louis where she graduated from Cleveland High School and Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing. Pearl worked in hospitals and with pediatricians, but her family meant more than anything else to her.

Pearl's daughter and son-in-law, Carol Ferguson and Peter Schroeder, faculty members at Southern Oregon University, live in Ashland with their daughters, Mariah and Ana. Additionally, daughters Nancy Ferguson (David Pinkard), Pat Jamjoom, and Mary Ferguson (Larry Clark); and sons, Tom Ferguson (Judy) and David Ferguson (Jill); along with 11 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter brought great joy to Pearl. From her example her husband Vincent, her children, and grandchildren learned the joy and value of a loving family and feel the great loss of her presence at its center.

There will be a celebration of Pearl's life Sunday, November 4, 2012, from 2:00-5:00 p.m. at Pioneer Hall across from Lithia Park in Ashland. The family welcomes all colleagues, friends, caregivers, and others to celebrate Pearl's life.

Donations in Pearl's memory can be made to the Ashland Parks Foundation, 340 South Pioneer Street, Ashland, OR 97520 for the North Mountain Nature Center. Pearl was a frequent visitor to the nature center; she had a favorite spot by Bear Creek that reminded her of her beloved Gasconade River in Missouri.

Gale Renee Manfre

Gale Renee (Olszewski ) Manfre 53, of Talent, passed away Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at her residence. Gale was born Feb 2nd, 1959, in Detroit Michigan to Rudolph Stanley and Marie Josephine (Wizbowski) Olszewski.

Gale graduated from Forest Hill High School in West Palm Beach Florida. She received an AASE from Denver Technical Institute.

Gale was most at peace with the mountains and in nature. She would see the same thing in nature over and over again and continue to be amazed at the beauty she saw. She had the most amazing connection with animals and created a safe environment for everyone around her.

She is survived by her husband Christian D. Manfre, her brother Greg Olszewski of Houston Texas; her Sister Karen (Olszewski) and her husband Jeff Liebler, their daughters Michelle and Nichole and their son Kevin of New Jersey; Brother Doug Olszewski of West Palm Beach, Florida.

Gale was preceded in death by her mother Marie Josephine (Wizbowski) Olszewski in 1989 and her father Rudolph Stanley Olszewski in 2006.

A Celebration of Gale’s Life will be held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 2, 2012 in Lithia Park at Pioneer Hall, 73 Winburn Way, Ashland, Oregon.

Harrison A. Taylor

The graveside service for HARRISON ASHER TAYLOR will be held Friday, June 1, 2012 at 11:00 am at the Eagle Point National Cemetery, 2763 Riley Road, Eagle Point, Oregon 97524.

HARRISON ASHER TAYLOR, 93, of Medford, passed away Friday, May 25, 2012 at Linda Vista Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Ashland, Oregon.

Mr. Taylor was born December 25, 1918 in Willits, California. He served in the U. S. Army from 1943 to 1945 and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in Luxembourg on December 17, 1944.

Mr. Taylor worked as a janitor for many years for the Medford School District at Wilson Elementary School. He also died contract work for the U. S. Forest Service.

On February 7, 1990 in the Philippines he married the former Wennie Sabado.

Survivors in addition to his wife Wennie of Medford include sons, Ben and Joe Taylor, also of Medford and Phillip Taylor of Washougle, Washington; daughter Donita Taylor of Medford; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren.

Bruce C. Duncan

Bruce Chapin Duncan died, Friday, April 6, 2012 in Ashland. He was born June 4, 1922 at Scofield Barracks, Oahu, Hawaii, the only child of Claude and Genevieve Duncan. His father was a career military man, first in the Army then in the Army Air Corps, Eventually retiring as a brigadier general. As a military brat, Bruce lived in a variety of places, but his favorite was Falls Church, Virginia, where he lived next door to cousins.

In 1942 he joined the US Navy and spent the next 4 years in San Diego as a hospital corpsman. He attended the Otis Art Institute where he studied architecture and designed and built a home in Santa Anna, California where he lived for 30 years. He worked as a teller for Wells Fargo Bank and met Loisan Wilson, who preceded him in death. They had a mutual interest in history and genealogy and would travel to Ashland to see plays at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival each summer. In 1987 they married and moved to Talent, Oregon that same year.

Bruce enjoyed Civil War history, genealogy, traveling, classical music and western movies. He was a member of the Rogue Valley Genealogical Society, the Sons of the American Revolution and was active in Trinity Episcopal Church in Ashland. His memorial service will be at Trinity Church at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 with arrangements under the direction of Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home.
