A Ceremony of Love and Appreciation will be held at 10:00 AM in the chapel of Litwiller, Ashland, on Monday, Nov. 26th for Beth W. Bornet (pictured here in the mid 1950s), an honored Ashland Community Hospital volunteer, Girl Scout leader-trainer, and much loved family member who died at age 88 the morning of November 22, 2012. Visitors are welcome.
Mrs. Bornet, an Ashland resident since 1963, was preceded in death by her father George A. Winchester, a community leader of Susanville, and her mother, Aura P. Winchester, a Lassen County teacher who retired in Ashland. Her husband, Vaughn Davis Bornet, a research historian affiliated with Southern Oregon University, 1963-80 survives her. They were married in 1944 after a brief courtship at Naval Air Station, Alameda, where he was Barracks Officer.
After graduation from Lassen Union High School, and a year at Lassen Junior College when she served as Queen of Job’s Daughters, Beth attended University of Nevada, Reno, graduating as 1945 class president and member of Gamma Phi Beta. Her married years included life in the wartime Navy community. Later came Macon, Miami, Menlo Park, Glen Ellyn (Illinois), Santa Monica, and Ashland.
Arriving in Jackson County in 1963, Beth was active in the Girl Scouts of America as volunteer and professional staff member. She trained future troop leaders and coordinated camping for two decades. The Bornets guided their son to Eagle Scout and her daughter to Curved Bar in Girl Scouts.
Among Beth’s very many leadership positions were presidency of the Oregon Hospital Auxiliary, 1981 and Ashland Hospital Auxiliary, 1972-1974. She initiated hospital Pediatric Tours, chairing them for 15 years. She happily served the free Blood Pressure Clinic. In 1998, the Ashland Hospital Board presented Mrs. Bornet with their first Certificate of Appreciation, in recognition of 25 years of leadership and “hard work and dedication, making the Auxiliary what it is today.” She was president of the Ashland Hospital Foundation. (Today’s Ashland’s Lights for Life at Christmas was her fund raising idea now amplified by others.) Throughout, Beth showed “commitment, devotion, and loyalty, ” it was said.
In 1990, Jackson County gave her its Volunteer of the Month award.
Locally, she was president of Dine and Discover dinner group, Altrusa Club of Jackson County, Southern Oregon College Faculty Wives Club, Ashland Study Club, and others. Beth was a longtime Precinct 2 elections clerk. She served with Red Cross Blood Bank and the Tudor Guild. She enjoyed the Military Officers Association of Southern Oregon and the Rogue Valley Yacht Club. She constantly contributed services as a faculty wife. In spring, 1969, she joined her historian husband on a four month World Campus Afloat voyage around the world, working as secretary to the Dean.
Beth enjoyed the Ashland Library, sewing, gourmet cooking, and sailing; camping, fishing, and trailering. Beth greeted many local citizens by name and was an upbeat “people person.”
Mrs. Bornet is survived by two married children, Barbara Bornet Stumph of Walnut Creek, California, retired teacher and Chinese art specialist, and Stephen Folwell Bornet, CDR (USNR, Ret) a retired corporation executive now a realtor in Stamford, Connecticut. Both are graduates of Ashland High School with university graduate degrees. Mrs. Bornet’s extended family consists of three grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Overall, can it not be quietly suggested that Beth’s years among us set a good example and were well spent?

George was born in Santa Cruz, Calif. on October 6, 1929. The older of two children, he was born to George Frank Mattos Sr. and Ada Metzler Mattos. Eight of George's pre-teen years were spent on his grandparent's fruit ranch (prunes and apricots) near San Jose in the Santa Clara Valley with his mother and brother, Rick. It was during this time he realized his love for nature, and spent much of his life in it!
George attended Pacific Grove High School where he fell in love with music and became an outstanding pole-vaulter. In 1947, as a senior, he took first in the pole vault event at the California State Track & Field Meet. As a result, he earned an athletic scholarship to San Jose State University and became an All-American pole-vaulter. For ten years he was ranked as one of the top ten pole-vaulters in the world.
He graduated with a bachelor's degree in music, later receiving his master's in music from Chico State University. George then served his country from 1952 to 1956, when he joined the United States Air Force. During this time, he continued to develop his skills in both music and pole vaulting, eventually earning a place on not one but two, United States Olympic Teams. He represented his country in Helsinki, Finland in 1952, and again in 1956, in Melbourne, Australia.
He met his first wife, Ginger Schroeder, at San Jose State University. They were married in 1953 in San Carlos, Calif. They raised their five children in Mt. Shasta, Calif. George began his music teaching career in 1956, teaching at the elementary and high school in Weed, Calif. In 1960, he began his tenure at the newly opened College of the Siskiyous. George was responsible for starting the music department and structured the program so that music majors could meet the requirements for their first two years of university work. One of George's great memories was that he was able to introduce music to thousands of students. During this time he became an avid tennis player and downhill skier. After retiring from the college in 1989, he moved to the Rogue Valley and continued to actively participate in these two sports, as well as square and round dancing.
George married Lorraine Herbertson in 1991, in Kihei, Maui. They traveled extensively around the world and in the United States, attending many World Track & Field championships.
George played in many music groups during his lifetime, including big bands, jazz combos, Dixieland, and concert bands. He played clarinet and saxophone, and was the leader of the popular Dixie Fat Cats Dixieland Band, which played atn the Medford Jazz Festival for ten years.
George was honored for his lifetime achievements by being inducted into the San Jose State University Sports Hall of Fame in 2008, the National Pole Vault Hall of Fame in 2010, and, in the spring of 2012, he was designated as an emeritus faculty for his outstanding contribution to College of the Siskiyous.
