Barbara O’Donnell

Barbara E. O’Donnell, 57, a longtime Baker City resident, died Feb. 8, 2001, at St. Alphonsus Medical Center in Boise after a long battle with diabetes.

Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Church of the Nazarene, 1250 Hughes Lane. Pastor Lennie Spooner will officiate. Vault interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitations will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Mrs. O’Donnell was born on July 1, 1943, at East Berlin, Germany, to Wilhelm and Analise Stevenhagen. She married Anthony W. O’Donnell at New Castle, Del. They moved to Baker City in 1978 and had lived here since.

Mrs. O’Donnell was active in the choir at the Baker City Church of the Nazarene and sang individually for fund-raisers and other church functions. She was a homemaker and enjoyed spending time with her family, knitting, crocheting and making other crafts. She was a very loving wife, mother and friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her husband, Tony O’Donnell of Baker City; and a daughter, Carman O’Donnell of New Castle, Del.

She was preceded in death by her father, Wilhelm Stevenhagen; her mother, Analise Stevenhagen; a brother, Heinze Stevenhagen; and a son, Adam W. O’Donnell.

Jack Brannock

Jack V. Brannock, 78, of Bend, a Baker City native, died Feb. 6, 2001, at Providence St. Vincent Hospital in Beaverton.

Mr. Brannock will be cremated and buried next to his wife at the Haines Cemetery. There will be a memorial service in the spring.

Mr. Brannock was born Oct. 10, 1922, to Judson and Alma Brannock. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II and later worked in farming. He also worked in logging and mill work. He retired to Bend in 1991.

Mr. Brannock is survived by two daughters, Arlene Rice of Tualatin and Anna Holliday of LaPine; a son, David Brannock, of Vancouver, Wash.; and a foster son, Robert Wood of Portland; six grandchildren, including Callie Beth Brannock of Yacolt, Wash., and Pamela Holliday of LaPine; and two sisters, Betty Wilson of Baker City and Lola Patterson of Oak Harbor, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by his wife, Mina.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice through Gray’s West & Co.

Lorin Stanciu

Lorin George Stanciu, 76, a Richland native, died Feb. 11, 2001, at St. Mary Medical Center at Walla Walla, Wash.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Richland. Vault interment will be at the Eagle Valley Cemetery in Richland.

Mr. Stanciu was born on Nov. 18, 1924, at Baker City to Eli and Rose Stanciu. He attended Pleasant Ridge Grade School and was a 1942 graduate of Eagle Valley High School at Richland.

He married Churby Densley on Oct. 20, 1948, at Richland. He farmed with his father, Eli, and brother, Wally, until moving to the Oregon Coast in 1964. He and his wife ran a motel at Newport until 1969.

They then moved to Walla Walla, Wash., where Mr. Stanciu worked for the parks department. They returned to Eagle Valley in 1971 where they built and operated a Grade A dairy until 1980. Mr. Stanciu continued to farm with his brother, Wally, until his death.

He was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church at Richland where he held many positions through the years. He also was a member of the Eagle Valley Cemetery Board.

Survivors include his wife, Churby of Richland; his brother, Wally Stanciu, and his wife, Maureen, of Richland; a son and daughter-in-law, John and Mary Stanciu of College, Place, Wash.; a daughter and son-in-law, Marion and Joe Ross Sr. of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; granddaughter and her husband, Lora and John Scott of Boise; grandson and his wife, Joe Jr. and Linda Ross of Post Falls, Idaho; and grandson, Eli Stanciu, and granddaughters, Maggie, Callie and Katie Gladden, all of College Place, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eli and Rose Stanciu.

Claire Davis

Claire Guttridge Davis, 98, a native of Prairie City and a a longtime Baker City resident, died Feb. 12, 2001, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.

Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Chapel, 3325 Pocahontas Road. The Rev. Rob Irwin of St. Francis de Sales Cathedral will officiate. Interment will be at the Prairie City Cemetery.

Mrs. Davis was born May 26, 1902, at Prairie City to John Sherman and Anna Brodie Guttridge. She was raised on the Guttridge Ranch south of Prairie City and was a graduate of Prairie City High School.

She married Herbert W. Davis and they had one son, John Randal Davis. She told many stories of riding horses, working cattle and making hay on the ranch.

After her parents’ deaths, the ranch was sold on contract. Later, she and her siblings had to repossess it. They operated it as the J.S. Guttridge Estate Ranch for several years until they sold it and it became known as the Oxbow Ranch.

Mrs. Davis lived in Portland for more than 50 years and had lived in Baker City for the last 12 years.

Survivors include two grandchildren, Linda and John, and five great-grandchildren, all of Massachusetts; her daughter-in-law, several nieces and nephews; and many other friends and relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert W. Davis; her son, John Randal Davis; sisters, Ellen Anderson and Elva Henderson; and brothers, Sherman and Jim Guttridge.

‘Chuck’ Hansen

Charles D. “Chuck” Hansen, 81, a longtime Baker City resident, died Feb. 21, 2001, at his home after a brief battle with cancer.

A celebration of his life will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Cathedral at First and Church streets. A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mount Hope Cemetery. Interment will follow.

Mr. Hansen was born May 8, 1919, at Norman, Neb., the second son of Roy and Emma Hansen. He attended a small three-room country grade school in Nebraska and graduated from Minden High School in 1938. He then attended Oregon State College in Corvallis from 1938 to 1941.

He was drafted into the military and served from 1941 to 1945 in the United States and in the European Theater (Italy). Following his discharge he continued military affiliations with the Air Force Reserve, retiring in 1976.

Mr. Hansen began his 36-year career with Pacific Northwest Bell in Bend. In 1947 he was transferred to Baker City, where he worked as an installer and at several other jobs inside the telephone company plant before his retirement in 1982.

He married Mary Margaret McEnroe in September of 1948. They celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary in September of 2000. Their children were C. Douglas Hansen, who died in 1995, Mary Jo Hansen Grove of Baker City, and two infants who died at birth, Patricia and Joseph.

Mr. Hansen enjoyed many interesting things, including gardening, reading Louis L’Amour novels, watching television, photography, videotaping his grandsons’ activities and sporting events from an early age through high school, and also videotaping his own extensive travels.

As a retired military person he had the opportunity to travel on “space available” — military aircraft — around the world. He was in Germany when the Berlin Wall came down in 1989.

His travels also included trips to Africa, Alaska, Europe, the Pacific islands, Turkey, Asia, the Azores, Spain and three visits to Australia. He traveled many times to the Hawaiian Islands and enjoyed it very much. He also had the opportunity to visit many cities and air bases in the United States.

More recently he developed an interest in the computer. He liked getting online, sending e-mails and surfing the Net. Of all his hobbies his greatest was following his grandsons in their athletic events. He was their greatest supporter and traveled thousands of miles to watch them play.

Mr. Hansen was a member of the Elks Lodge, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Air Force Sergeants, St. Elizabeth Hospital Auxiliary and Trail Tenders. He volunteered at the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center and St. Elizabeth Health Services. He was affiliated with the Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Margaret Hansen; his daughter, Mary Jo Grove and her husband, Jim; his daughter-in-law, Debbie Hansen; his four grandsons, the pride and joy of his life, Marc Hansen, Darren Hansen, Casey Grove and Mitchell Grove; a brother-in-law, Joe McEnroe; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his two brothers, LeRoy Hansen and Harley Hansen; his son, Doug, and two infant children, Patricia and Joseph.

Mildred Pennington

Mildred Liddie Pennington, 96, a lifelong Baker County resident, died Feb. 21, 2001, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.

Her funeral will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Coles-Strommer Funeral Home, 1950 Place St. Visitations will be Sunday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Pennington was born Nov. 6, 1904, at her family’s homestead on Lookout Mountain. She was a daughter of Jacob and Callie Dwinell Rohner. She went through eight years of school in a one-room schoolhouse near the homestead.

She married William Collin Pennington on Nov. 6, 1930, at Baker City. They had two children, Gordon and Grace. Mr. Pennington died April 9, 1977, in Baker City.

Mrs. Pennington loved animals, especially her two cats. Gardening, crocheting and huckleberrying were her other favorite pastimes. Her children and grandchildren were the light of her life.

She is survived by her son, Gordon Pennington of Baker City; her daughter, Grace Southard of Medical Springs; seven grandchildren, Jim and Lori Southard of Medical Springs, Billie Southard of Island City, Richard Southard of Union, Christy Whalen of Heppner, Judi and Matt Hall of Casper, Wyo., Jean Southard of La Grande and Jane and Matt Ginther of Irrigon; her sister-in-law, Gertrude Clymer of Baker City; seven great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; six step-great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son-in-law, James L. Southard; and by four brothers.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to a charity of one’s choice through Coles-Strommer Funeral Home, 1950 Place St., Baker City, Ore., 97814.

‘Pug’ Robinson

Bill J. “Pug” Robinson, 72, a lifelong Baker City resident, died Feb. 20, 2001, at St. Elizabeth Health Services after a bout with cancer.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Lutheran Church, 1734 Third St. Pastor Dennis Hickman will officiate. Visitations will be until 8 o’clock tonight at Gray’s West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Mr. Robinson was born on May 12, 1928, at Baker City to William and Eva Robinson.

Mr. Robinson was a lifelong Baker City resident and had lived on the family farm for almost 68 years. He married Mary Wessel at Idaho Falls on June 2, 1956. They raised two daughters.

Mr. Robinson had an extensive collection of Caterpillar and farm equipment. He showed his collection each year for the past 21 years during the Baker Antique Equipment Show at his “Power of the Past” museum.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Robinson of Baker City; daughters and sons-in-law, Eva and Rusty Truscott of Davenport, Wash., and Mary and Martin Neske of Haines; his adopted daughter and her husband, Vivian and Tommy Tucker of John Day; and grandchildren, Daniel, Jason and Jennifer Shumway, Tyrel Truscott and Pamela and Casey Neske.

‘Joe’ Barton

Robert “Joe” Barton, 62, a longtime Baker City resident, died Feb. 19, 2001, at his home.

There will be a Celebration of Life service at 3 p.m. Friday at Gray’s West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave. The Rev. Ernest Smith of the United Methodist Church will officiate. The family requests that the service be casual. Visitations will be until 8 o’clock tonight at the funeral home.

Mr. Barton was born on Dec. 11, 1938, at Union to Edgar and Dora Richards Barton. He was raised and educated at Union.

At the age of 14, he began working with his father in the woods in Eastern Oregon. He worked for 16 years in a sawmill at Lakeview and returned to Eastern Oregon in 1980.

He moved to Southeastern Alaska in 1989 where he lived for the next eight years. Six of those eight years were spent in logging. In 1995, he turned to carpentry and maintenance work until he returned to Eastern Oregon in 1997.

In April 1999, he became employed as a custodian for the Baker School District. He was full of life and loved life in general. He loved to be in the woods, to hunt mushrooms, pick huckleberries, cut firewood and hunt. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren.

The Eagles Lodge was his life for 35 years and he worked for many of its charities. He was the current president of the Baker Eagles Aerie 3456. He had many friends and never refused a helping hand. He was a simple man, loved by everyone who knew him and he had a great sense of humor. His motto was “Enjoy life. It is a short son of a gun.”

Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Barton of Baker City; sons and daughters-in-law, Lyle and Janice Barton of North Powder and Richard and Janine Barton of Catonsville, Md.; a stepdaughter and her husband, Merry and Keith Montgomery of Union; grandchildren, Cody and Scooter Barton of North Powder, Ashley, Jake and Taylor Barton of Catonsville, Md., and Rylee Montgomery of Union; a brother and sister-in-law, Edgar and Ellen Barton of La Grande; sisters and brothers-in-law, Virginia and Virgil Chandler and Jane and Richard Lang, all of Salem and Minnie and Elwyn Alexander of Missoula, Mont.; and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends.

Mary Holladay

Mary Anita Holladay, 57, of Canyon City, a former Unity resident, died Feb. 21, 2001, at Twin Falls, Idaho.

Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Driskill Memorial Chapel at John Day. Pastor Dennis Sams will officiate. Interment will be in the Canyon City Cemetery.

Mrs. Holladay was born on Oct. 30, 1943, at Hillsdale, Kan., to Jim and Mildred DeMastus. She moved to Unity with her family shortly after her birth. She attended elementary school at Unity and was a 1961 graduate of Hereford High School.

She married Everett Holladay on Feb. 17, 1962, at Ontario. They moved to John Day in 1963.

She worked as a secretary for the Grant Independent School District superintendent at John Day and as an insurance agent for North Coast Life Insurance. She retired in 1988.

She was a member of the Blue Mountain Hospital Auxiliary, the City Council at Canyon City, the Elkettes and the Nazarene Church. She enjoyed antiques, travel, bingo and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Everett Holladay of John Day; her mother, Mildred DeMastus of Baker City; her sons, Bill Holladay of Corvallis and Schann Holladay of San Antonio, Texas; brothers, Jim Bob DeMastus of Baker City and Bill DeMastus of La Grande; sisters, Beverly Anderson of Boise and Wanda Arriola of Bridgeport; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, Jim DeMastus.

Dedith Shorts

Dedith Shorts, 83, a longtime Baker City resident, died Feb. 15, 2001, at Settler’s Park.

His memorial service will be later at Colville, Wash.

Mr. Shorts was born on Aug. 12, 1918, at Beloit, Wis., to Edward and Roserie Shorts. He worked for the railroad most of his life.

He also did some logging with his sons. He loved to fish and hunt. He was a World War II veteran. He will be buried at Colville, Wash.

Survivors include daughters, Vickie Laurent of Baker City and Rozie Finch of Elk, Wash.; sons, Red Shorts of Pendleton, Tim Shorts of Dutch Harbor, Alaska, and Dan Shorts of Spokane, Wash.; a sister, Vera Frank of Omro, Wis.; his wife, Florence of Baker City; and 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna; a son, David Shorts; and brothers, Frank of Cascade Locks and Ed of Baker City.
