Clyde LeRoy Sutton, 78, died July 2, 2001, at the Oregon Veterans Home at The Dalles.
His memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home at Vernonia. His sons-in-law, Jerry Bruce and Jerry Hayes will officiate. Private interment will be at the Vernonia Memorial Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to a reception after the service at Lews Place in Vernonia.
Mr. Sutton was born on Aug. 23, 1922, at Thornton, Idaho, to LeRoy and Eunice H. Clark Sutton. As a young boy, he moved with his family to Burns. He was a 1940 Burns High School graduate.
He was a veteran of World War II, having joined the U.S. Navy on Nov. 12, 1942. He served for four years and was discharged on Jan. 18, 1946, at Bremerton, Wash.
Mr. Sutton was married to Lurley A. Sass on June 30, 1946, at Richland. After their marriage they lived at Vernonia. They celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary just two days before his death.
From 1946 to 1958, Mr. Sutton worked at the Oregon-American Mill at Vernonia. He later worked for Kaiser in St. Helens until 1961 when he went to work for Tecktronix at Beaverton. He worked in the warehouse as a forklift operator for 22 years, retiring in 1983.
Among his special interests were gardening, crossword puzzles, stamp collecting and birds. He also was interested in researching the history of covered bridges throughout Oregon. He had compiled an extensive scrapbook with photos and facts about the bridges. He also had a special love for spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Larry Sutton; and a sister, Leah Mills.
Survivors include his wife, Lurley Sutton of La Grande; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Jerry Bruce of Gresham and Sherry and Jerry Hays of La Grande; two sisters, Adaline Walker of Hillsboro and Madge Heman of Portland; two grandchildren and their spouses, Sandy and Steve Meshke of Warrenton and Jason and Rheadean Hays of La Grande; and four great-grandchildren, Emily Meshke and Ryan Meshke, both of Warrenton, and Breanne Hays and Noelle Hays, both of La Grande; and several nieces and nephews.

Alma Poulsen
Alma R. Poulsen, 96, of Pendleton, a former longtime Baker City resident, died July 2, 2001, at her home.
Her graveside funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Mount Hope Cemetery in Baker City.
Mr. Poulsen was born Sept. 11, 1904, at Neelyville, Mo., to Stephen Maxwell and Mandy Caroline Bartley Dowdy.
She moved to Baker City in 1943 and had lived the past six years in Pendleton.
She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the Rebekah Lodge, and was a past member of the Baker Grange.
Mrs. Poulsen is survived by her son, Tom Harral of Pendleton; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Bob Harral and Jerry Harral; and by three husbands, Jerry C. Harral Sr., Charles Greer, and Chris Poulsen.

Irene Rogers Dague
Irene Rogers Dague, 105, of Seattle, Wash., a former Baker City resident, died May 10, 2001, at Seattle.
There will be a family gathering in her memory and inurnment of her ashes Tuesday at Mount Hope Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Gray’s West & Co. There was a memorial service at Magnolia Presbyterian Church in Seattle earlier.
Mrs. Dague was born on Feb. 3, 1896, at Azusa, Calif. She graduated from Occidental College in 1918 and worked as a teacher and later as a social worker. She was a lifelong Presbyterian and a member of the PEO Sisterhood. The Dague family lived in Baker City from 1941 to 1949.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Irwin Dague, in 1948.
Survivors include her daughter, Kathryn DeMaris of Seattle; a son, George Dague of North Andover, Mass., and his wife, Jan; five grandchildren, Ann Davids and her husband, Ron, James DeMaris and his wife, Debbie, Paul DeMaris and his wife, Barbara, Deanna Dague and Charles Dague; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Katie Smallwood
Katie Mae Smallwood, 77, a Baker Valley resident, died July 10, 2001, at St. Elizabeth Health Care Center.
Her memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Monday at the Coles-Strommer Funeral Home, 1950 Place St. Pastor Ralph Holcomb will officiate.
Mrs. Smallwood was born Jan. 1, 1924, at Sundance, Wyo. She was the only daughter of Frank and Jenny Mae Wells Chaffin. She was raised in the Black Hills and received her education at Sundance and Gillette, Wyo. She later taught school in northeastern Wyoming and southeastern Montana.
She married Roy E. Smallwood on Jan. 12, 1946, at Broadus, Mont. They lived at Sheridan, Wyo., moving to Columbia Falls, Mont., in 1954, where they farmed. In 1984, they moved to the Keating area of Baker County. They ranched in the area until Mr. Smallwood’s death in February 1991. Mrs. Smallwood continued to run the ranch until her retirement in 1995.
She was always a cowgirl and probably roped more animals and broke more horses then most cowboys today. She was born and raised on a ranch and loved working with livestock and animals. She enjoyed gardening, reading and liked listening to country music. Her favorite place was outside with the animals she loved.
Survivors include her son, Marvin D. Smallwood of Baker City.

Letha Foster
Letha Ardelle Foster, 89, died July 9, 2001, at Ontario.
Her memorial service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Coles-Strommer Funeral Home, 1950 Place St. in Baker City. Interment will be at Medford.
Mrs. Foster was born July 14, 1911, at Ashgrove, Mo., and was raised in the Idaho Falls, Idaho, area. She was schooled there and graduated from LIFE Bible College in Los Angeles in 1941.
She was pastor of a Mission Church at Long Beach, Calif., during World War II, worked as assistant pastor and secretary of Long Beach Foursquare Church for many years, and spent most of her life teaching the Bible in various capacities.
She was well-known for her hospitality to traveling ministers and evangelists. After retirement she and her husband moved to Medford.
Mrs. Foster is survived by two daughters, Beverly Sharrah of Baker City and Shirley Gough of Las Vegas, Nev.; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Jay Foster, who died in June 1985.

Rick Leyva
Rick Lonnie Leyva, 29, of Culdesac, Idaho, a former Baker City resident, died May 31, 2001, at Joseph Plains, south of Cottonwood.
His body was cremated and no service is planned at this time. Uhlorn Funeral Home at Cottonwood, Idaho, is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Leyva was born at Valdese, N.C., on Dec. 31, 1971. He was the son of deaf-mute parents. He had lived in Idaho since April 1972.
Mr. Leyva attended schools at Clarkston, Wash., Baker City and Medford. He was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Survivors include a sister, Consuela Hernandez of Rialto, Calif.; three brothers, Marcelo and Valentino Leyva of Medford and Lorenzo Leyva of Springfield; his father, Leonel Leyva of Medford; his mother, Barbara Leyva of Juneau, Alaska; three nieces, McKenzie, Olivia and Jesstica of Medford; two nephews, Tyler of Medford and Christopher of Rialto, Calif.; his grandmother, Ruth Hamilton of Culdesac, Idaho; and aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Kelly Jr.; his nephew, Dakota; and his grandfather, Bob.
Caroline Rayborn
Caroline Rayborn, 85, of Baker City, died July 4, 2001, at her home.
Her graveside funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Mount Hope Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at 3 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2625 Hughes Lane.
Mrs. Rayborn was born April 1, 1916, at Albion, Idaho, to Reuben James Jolley and Ezra Tooele Conger. She married Norman Wesley Rayborn on July 13, 1934, at Vancouver, Wash. They were sealed for time and eternity in the LDS Logan Temple on July 13, 1984, and shared 64 years of marriage. They owned and operated Rayborn’s Market in Baker City for 25 years.
Mrs. Rayborn was a member of the Baker City First Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Joyce Rayborn of Portland; a daughter, Barbara Beeson of Baker City, a daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Donald Morgan of Sauquoit, N.Y.; a brother and sister-in-law, Tony and Norma Jolley of Bruneau, Idaho; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim and Irene Jolley of Molalla, Edsel and Beverly Jolley of Keizer, and John Jay and Alice Jolley of Caldwell, Idaho; 13 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mrs. Rayborn was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Rayborn; her parents, Reuben Jolley and Ezra McGavin; four sisters, Talley Vanek, Lula Baird, Wanda Smith and Agnes Hogg; two brothers, Bill Jolley and Woodrow Jolley; and a grandson, David Snyder.

Allie Albertson
Allie Albertson, 103, of Salem, and a former La Grande resident, died July 7, 2001, at a Salem care center.
Her graveside funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Island City Cemetery. The Rev. Mark Schlessman of the La Grande First Christian Church will officiate.
Mrs. Albertson was born Feb. 19, 1898, at Boreing, Ky. She was one of nine children born to John D. “JD” and Marian (Hammack) Broughton Sr. The family moved to Wallowa County, and she was educated in Enterprise. After high school she attended Western Oregon University at Monmouth and Eastern Oregon University at La Grande, and she received her teaching certification. She taught in Wallowa, Umatilla, Union and Baker counties.
She and her husband, Hobart Albertson, remodeled and built several properties in the area. He died in the early 1950s. In 1968, she moved to Capital Manor Retirement Center in Salem.
Mrs. Albertson is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, including Retha Bowman, Reba Clark, John Braughton III, and George Broughton; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her siblings: Mary B. Kail, Myra Richmond, Fanny Muir, Nannie Diehl, Mattie Hoatson, Dora Cooper, John D. Braughton II, and George Braughton.

Nora Hayes-Gillgam
Nora Ellen Hayes-Gillgam, 86, of Portland, a Baker City native, died July 9, 2001, in Portland.
Her funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Mount Scott Funeral Home in Portland. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the North Powder Cemetery.
She was born on Dec. 31, 1914, at Baker City and attended Baker schools. She had lived in the Portland area since the early 1940s.
She worked for Perfect Fit, was a bartender for local taverns and was a seamstress for Freightliner from 1964 to 1981. She and her companion, Martin Resa, had been together for more than 35 years.
Survivors include her companion, Martin Resa of Portland; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society.
Merle Lewis
Merle M. Lewis, 85, a former Baker City resident, died July 4, 2001, at a Boise care facility.
Her funeral was today at 1 p.m. at the Relyea Funeral Chapel in Boise. Burial was at Dry Creek Cemetery in Boise.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Relyea Funeral Chapel.
‘Ozzie’ Osborn
Charles W. “Ozzie” Osborn, 71, of Baker City, died July 4, 2001, at his home.
His memorial service will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Coles-Strommer Funeral Home, 1950 Place St.
Mr. Osborn was born Oct. 5, 1926, at La Grande to Iran and Floea (Bingaman) Osborn. He was raised in La Grande and in Fresno, Calif.
Mr. Osborn married Gloria A. Keider on Feb. 17, 1962, in Las Vegas. He moved to Baker City in 1971 from California. He worked at various photography businesses until he started his own in 1974, “Photo by Ozzie.”
He had the opportunity to meet Baker High School’s graduating classes in the late 1970s while taking their senior portraits for the Baker Senior High yearbooks. He took numerous photos of Baker City and the surrounding area.
He then went into the property management field, where he traveled and managed properties in Washington, Oregon and California before retiring and coming back to Baker City. He enjoyed taking photographs of his family and fishing the local rivers.
Mr. Osborn is survived by his wife, Gloria Osborn, Baker City; daughter and son-in-law, Toni M. and Dennis Wood of Carlinville, Ill.; a daughter, Terri M. Mitchell of Missouri; a son, Dean W. Osborn and family of Hermiston; a daughter, Kim D. Lawrence and family of Kuna, Idaho; a sister, Aloha Stanford of Eureka, Calif.; and stepsons, David Prcheco and Randolph Austin of San Diego.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son.

Lorraine Bardan
Lorraine Elizabeth Bardan, 91, of Weiser, Idaho, and a former Baker City resident, died July 6, 2001, from Alzheimer’s disease at a Weiser care center.
Vigil services will be today at 7 p.m. at Thomason Funeral Chapel in Weiser. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Weiser. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Fairview Cemetery in Annex.
Mrs. Bardan was born May 4, 1910, at Minneapolis, Minn., to Robert E. and Annette Donaghue Lee. The family moved west, settling in the Parkdale area, where Mrs. Bardan and her siblings attended school. She took nurse’s training in Seattle in 1928-1929.
She married Morris Brock at Hood River in 1930.
During the war years she was a welder for Boeing Aircraft and the Portland shipyards. She was sent to San Francisco by the shipyards to do some welding for the Navy in the 1940s. Divorced in 1948, she then married George Donald Bardan, and the couple moved to Baker City where they lived until 1968, when they moved to the Annex area.
While in Baker City, Mrs. Bardan was well-known for her outgoing personality and work ethic. She worked for Jess Heard at Mike Hoff’s Log Cabin, at the Smoke Shop for Connie Grabb, the Pastime for Raymond Brown, Scotty’s Tavern for Scotty McKenzie and back again at The Log Cabin for Bill and Vi Lawson.
Later on, she and her husband, George, purchased and ran The Log Cabin for several years. At one time she managed the Stockman’s Café for Pat and Zen Cutting. She was a member of the Veterans Of Foreign Wars Auxiliary at Baker City and a member of the Catholic Women’s League in Weiser.
Survivors include five daughters: Patricia Culley of Weiser; Mary Helen Strain and husband, Verne, of Smithers, British Columbia, Canada; Renne Edwards of Baker City; Margaret Fornshell of Vader, Wash.; and Brandy Rametes of Keizer; a son, John Bardan and his wife, Joyce, of Weiser; brothers, Eugene Lee of Portland; Kenneth Lee of St. Joseph, Mo.; and Richard Lee of Anaheim, Calif; sisters, Jean Hoeninger of St. Louis, Mo., and Shirley Greenman of Anaheim, Calif.; 19 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; a daughter, Midge; and five brothers and sisters.
Mrs. Bardan enjoyed life and was loved by her family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
