Beverley Torrey-Grimes

Beverley Torrey-Grimes, 74, of Mesa, Ariz., a former longtime Baker City resident who returned often to visit relatives and friends, died Dec. 16, 2003, at the Banner Hospice House.

Her funeral will be scheduled in Baker City at the family's convenience. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. Gray's West & Co. is in charge of arrangements.

Born April 21, 1929, at Pocatello, Idaho, she was the daughter of the late Lester Randall and Jessie Armstrong-Randall. She was the wife of the late Charles Grimes.

She was a homemaker and a dental assistant for many years. She was a Baker High School graduate and had traveled in Europe and lived in Spain and France.

She lived in many different places in the United States, including her hometown of Baker City. She enjoyed many different hobbies including ceramics and her love of reading.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and greatly enjoyed the visits from her ward teachers.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Grace, and her husband, Jerry, of Walkersville, Md., and Paula Barlet and her husband, Russ, of Mesa, Ariz.; two sisters, Lola Jack, and her husband, Robert, of Baker City, and Norma Cartwright and Gail Gardner of Medford; two grandchildren, Anthony Grace and Tina Grace; and five great-grandchildren, Caitlin and Rachel Kirkpatrick, and Allie and Jared Grace, all of Walkersville, Md., and Ryan Grace, of North Pole, Alaska; many nieces and nephews; and many friends she made over the years.

She was preceded in death by Paul Bowers, Ronald Torrey, her brother-in-law, Orlin Cartwright, and her nephew, James Cartwright.

Mark Shoemaker

Mark D. "Monk" Shoemaker, 65, a longtime St. Helens resident, died Dec. 21, 2003, of natural causes.

At the family's request, disposition was by cremation. No service is planned.

Mark was born on March 27, 1938, at Toppenish, Wash., to Marcus T. and Lorraine V. Embrey Shoemaker. He attended grade schools at Hermiston, where he lived a large part of his life. He was a 1957 Hermiston High School graduate and later moved to Coquille and then to the Myrtle Point area where he went to work for Roseburg Lumber Co. for several years.

In the mid-1960s, Mark moved to St. Helens where he broke ground for the Trojan Nuclear Plant. He worked there for about 30 years for the Laborers Local Union 320, where he was well-known and respected.

He moved to Haines in 1999 after he retired. He enjoyed the outdoors, seeing the snow-covered mountains, being in the fresh air and being closer to the Snake River, where he enjoyed fishing. He also enjoyed deer and elk hunting each season with friends and family.

Mark loved gardening and going to the mountains to pick mushrooms. He enjoyed trips to the coast to visit his family, especially during Easter time. He loved to hide the Easter eggs and watch his grandchildren hunt for them. And he enjoyed picking bouquets of daffodils.

Mark was involved with his senior citizen neighbors and enjoyed his newly found friends. He was said to be their adoptive son — a son who always had a smile, joke or wave for anyone who passed by.

Survivors include a son, Mark Shoemaker; two daughters, Maxine Crawford of Sweet Home and Celene Horlacher of Myrtle Point; his mother, Lorraine Woodward of Hermiston; sisters, Margaret Ball of Lexington and Jacqueline Hartman and Betty Doman of Hermiston; a brother, Boyd Woodward, and a close friend and nephew, Douglas Ross, both of Hermiston; six grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Mark Shoemaker; a stepfather, Ralph Woodward; and a sister, Virginia Brock.

Jiles Dinger

Jiles D. Dinger, 91, a former Sumpter and Baker City resident, died Sunday, December 28, 2003, at Kellogg, Idaho, while recuperating from injuries sustained in a fall.

His graveside funeral will be at 1 p.m. MST Monday at the Valley View Cemetery in Vale. Pastor Roy Obermeier of Willowcreek Community Church at Willowcreek will officiate. Vault interment will be after the service.

Jiles Dennis Dinger was born at Taloga, Okla., on July 28, 1912. He worked on a farm for 20 years. He also was part owner of the Sumpter Supply Store. He loved mining and worked in different mines in Baker County.

He married Theta Hazel Rea at Vale on July 13, 1932. She died Jan. 18, 2003. They had many happy years together. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather to all of his family.

Survivors include his sons, Paul Dinger of Parma, Idaho, Kent Dinger of Vale and Dale Dinger of Kingston, Idaho; five grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 70 years, Theta; one brother, Lloyd Dinger; and one sister, Freda Desmit.

Anna Morris

Anna Marie Morris, 98, of Baker City, died Dec. 31, 2003, at her home.

Her funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Gray's West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave. Sister Kay Marie will officiate. The funeral will be followed by a graveside service at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Anna was born March 7, 1905, at St. Paul, Minn., to Steve and Ella Domby, who were Hungarian immigrants. When Anna was a young girl she came to Malheur City with her parents and two sisters. The family settled on a homestead there. She attended grade school at Malheur City, and later came to Baker City, where she worked for room and board. She attended the St. Francis Academy through the eighth grade.

When her dad died she returned to the ranch in Malheur City to help. While at the ranch she met Wayne, and they were married in 1932. Wayne and Anna celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Sept. 8, 1982.

Anna was a member of the Catholic Church. She was a housewife and rancher, and lived at the Snake River, Cambridge, Malheur City and Bridgeport before she settled in Baker City in 1958. She loved the white-faced Hereford cattle and good quarter horses. Her great-grandchildren nicknamed her "Grandma Cookie" because she always had her cookie jar full, and milk in the fridge. She had a sign in her kitchen saying "Free Hugs and Cookies." She loved visitors, and she made sure they never left hungry. Anna said a visitor could do more to make you feel good than any ole pill.

The family would like to thank Anna's caregivers, friends and family who made it possible for her to stay at home.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Bertha and Darrell Bales; her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Rocky; five grandchildren, Bradley Bales, Brian Bales and his wife, Karen, Dan Morris and his wife, Amy, Jeff Morris, and Lori Halsey and her husband, Tim; eight great-grandchildren, Kelly, Kevin, Drew, Morgan, Jake, Justin, Marissa and Anthony; and two brothers, Victor Domby of Bend and Paul Domby of Ontario.

Anna was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne; her parents, Steve and Ella Domby; her brothers and sisters, Ella Capps, Louise Bronson, Clara Scott, Ethel Archuleta, Steve Domby and Francis Domby, and five other brothers and sisters who died in infancy.

Contributions in Anna's memory may be made in her name to St. Francis Cathedral, 2235 First St., Baker City, or to the charity of one's choice, in care of Gray's West & Co., P.O. Box 726, Baker City, OR 97814.

Carmen Whiteley

Carmen Whiteley, 75, of Baker City, died Dec. 17, 2003.

There will be a celebration of her life on Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend at Pine Haven Cemetery in Halfway.

She was born on July 25, 1928, to Claude and Rachel Krigbaum in a farmhouse near Halfway. She was married to Daryl Whiteley on Dec. 22, 1945. They would have celebrated their 58th anniversary this year.

Daryl and Carmen worked in many places over the years. They spent a number of years in the livestock business. While managing a large cattle operation, Carmen had her own horse and helped with everything that needed to be done such as doctoring, branding and driving truck. They were true partners, without her help, people said, "we would have to hire two more men."

Carmen loved rodeos and saw lots of them including several times at the National Finals Rodeo. Whenever Daryl entered a rodeo and got hurt, she would say "it serves you right." Carmen and Daryl were not only husband and wife, but partners. While buying livestock they traveled all over the Western states and Canada.

Carmen almost always traveled with Daryl. While working construction, they spent 4̃ years in Hawaii where Daryl was a construction superintendent. Carmen spent all the time that she could on the beach looking for seashells. That 4̃ years was one of her happiest times.

Carmen was a member of the Trail Tenders organization for more than 11 years and volunteered countless hours at The National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center. She was involved in many activities at the center including being a member of the Sew 'N Sews.

Carmen was also a member of the Oregon California Trails Association. She and Daryl traveled to many conventions all over the Western states where Carmen made many friends she remained in contact with. Carmen will be missed by all of them and everyone who knew her.

Survivors include her husband, Daryl; son, Larry, of Walla Walla, Wash.; a brother, Phil Krigbaum, and his wife, Marty, of Connel, Wash.; a sister, Joann Hulse, and her husband, Herb, of Kennewick, Wash.; sister, Lana Sloan, and her husband, Jim, of Pendleton; granddaughter, Lehua Hanson, and four great-granddaughters of Pasco, Wash., Kuiipo Whiteley and three grandchildren of Othello, Wash., and granddaughter, Heather Clark, of Richland, Wash.; an aunt, Marie Colombari of Baker City; and uncle, Don Makinson of Pine Creek; many cousins, nieces, nephews and many, many friends who she loved dearly.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Trail Tenders Inc. to establish a memorial in her name at the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center. This may be done through Tami's Pine Valley Funeral Home P.O. Box 543, Halfway, OR 97834.

Judith Andrew

Judith Rae Andrew, 65, of Baker City, died Dec. 4, 2003, at St. Elizabeth Health Care Center with her family around her.

At Judy's request, there will be no memorial service.

She was born Judith Rae Walters on April 8, 1938, at Portland where she lived until 1995 when she moved to Baker City to retire. Here she met and married George Andrew, who died in 2001.

Judy was a gifted musician and singer who majored in music at Oregon State University at Corvallis. She went on to record a Christian music album with her longtime friend, Judy Gritzmacher. She was very active in church activities in Portland and for years sang with the church folk group along with her five children.

Her dream was to have her children sing like the VonTrapp family singers in "The Sound of Music." It's only fitting then that she end her life with the name Judy Andrew (almost Julie Andrews, who played Maria in the movie).

Survivors include her five children, Daedre Decker, Darcie Ward, Denise Wymore, Mark Prehn and Carl Prehn; 11 grandchildren, Matthew, Leslie, Stephanie, Amanda, Timothy, another Matthew, Mason, Grant, Rachel, Eliott, and Megan; and two brothers, Roger and Rick Walters.

The family requests memorial contributions to the Pathway Hospice program in Judy's memory through Gray's West & Co., P.O. Box 726, Baker City, OR 97814.

‘Kathy' Smietana

Kathryn Jean "Kathy" Smietana, 48, of Baker City, died Dec. 21, 2003, at her home.

There will be a celebration of her life at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 2177 First St. The Rev. Connie Boone will conduct the service.

Kathy was born July 2, 1955, at Corona, Calif., to John "Jack" and Beverly Neske. She attended school in Perris, Calif., and in 1972 participated in the American Field Services (AFS) exchange program. She spent 10 weeks in Costa Rica with a host family.

She graduated from Perris High School in 1973. After graduation, she moved to Baker City. On Nov. 8, 1975, she married Mike Smietana. They had two children, Michelle and Joseph.

She worked for the Baker County Health Department for the last 13 years. Kathy enjoyed her family and the outdoors.

The family extends a special thanks to all of the friends who helped during hard times, especially Bertha Bales, Nancy Staten, Patty Bogart, Mickey Bowman, Katie Countryman, Julie French, Larry Frank, the Dodsons, the Halls, Agnes Heck, Mary Tomlinson and many others.

Survivors include her husband, Mike; daughter, Michelle, and son, Joseph Smietana, all of Baker City; her mother, Beverly Neske-Schaer and her husband, Duane Schaer, of Baker City; father-in-law, Ted Smietana of Baker City; brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Marcella Neske of Baker City, and Martin and Mary Neske of Haines; sisters and brothers-in-law, Patty and Richard Howe of Haines, and Dana and Mark Robinson of Springfield; sister-in-law, Kay Sword, and her husband, Dan, of Baker City; brother-in-law, Ted Smietana, and his wife, Pam, of Salem; nieces and nephews, Josh, Jolynne, Patrick, Kathleen, Pamela, Casey, Dan Jr., Al and Steve.

She was preceded in death by her father, Jack Neske; and her mother-in-law, Ann Smietana.

Kenneth Rost

Dr. Kenneth D. Rost, 59, a La Grande resident since 1978, and a former Baker City physician, died Dec. 23, 2003, at his home of natural causes.

There will be a celebration of his life at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in La Grande. Pastor Norman Shrumm will officiate.

Dr. Rost was born on Feb. 17, 1944, at Spokane, Wash., to Clarence A. and Iris V. Fear Rost. He was raised at Beaverton, and was a 1962 Beaverton High School graduate. He earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Willamette University at Salem in 1966. There he met his wife, Mary Anne Dorsch. They were married in 1966.

He received his medical degree from Oregon Health Sciences University in 1970 and later returned to OHSU to complete his residency as an obstetrician and gynecologist in 1978.

Between medical school and completing his residency, Dr. Rost was a flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force from 1971 to 1973. He maintained a private practice in Baker City from 1973 to 1975. He returned to Eastern Oregon in 1978, where he maintained a private OB/GYN practice in La Grande until his retirement in 2001.

Dr. Rost was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in La Grande. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed water skiing, hunting, horseback riding and running. He especially enjoyed the Eagle Cap Wilderness and spending time with his family at Wallowa Lake. The Rost family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who gave their love and support during the last several years of Dr. Rost's life.

Survivors include his wife, Mary, of La Grande; two sons and their spouses, Jeff and Tiffanie Rost of Salem and Brian and Jennifer Rost of Lolo, Mont.; a brother, Terry Rost, of Beaverton; and his mother, Iris Rost of Hillsboro.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Fabian Mack

Fabian S. Mack, 81, of Ontario died Feb. 25, 2004, at his home after an extended illness.

There will be a vigil service and the rosary will be said at 7 p.m. MST Sunday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Ontario. Liturgy of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. MST Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Ontario. The Rev. W. Raymond Jarboe will preside. Burial will be at Hillcrest East Cemetery in La Grande at 2 p.m. PST. Lienkaemper Chapel of Ontario is in charge of arrangements.

Fabian S. Mack was born on March 6, 1922, to Anton and Katherine Black Mack near Minot, N.D. He grew up on a wheat and cattle ranch. Mack served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1938 and graduated from high school in 1941.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force as an aviation cadet in May of 1942 and served as a B-24 bomber crew member in the 8th Air Force stationed in England. He flew 30 combat missions over Europe during World War II in 1944 and was awarded six air medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service. He was honorably discharged in September 1945 as a tech sergeant.

Mack went on to study watchmaking and graduated from the American Academy of Horology (watchmaking) at Denver in 1947. He was employed for a time in Minot, N.D., as a watchmaker and watch inspector for the Great Northern Railroad.

He married Irene Klein in November 1947. In 1949 they opened "Mack's Jewelers" in Baker City. Mack opened a second store in Pendleton in 1957, a third store (Davis Jewelers) in Ontario, in 1977, and a fourth in Weiser, Idaho, in 1982. Mack was one of the earliest graduate gemologists of the Gemological Institute of America (1956), sharing the title with only six others in Oregon.

In addition to the jewelry business, the Macks maintained a working ranch on which family members spent half their time. Fabian enjoyed hunting with his sons. He traveled extensively, often with his daughters, visiting wartime landmarks in Europe and leisure spots in the United States, Caribbean and Hawaii.

In 1987, he sold his interests in the jewelry stores to two of his sons and retired. The stores changed their name to "Mack & Sons." Of his 13 children, seven are actively involved in the jewelry industry.

In 2003, Mack completed a lifetime dream of writing and publishing his memoirs. Titled "Fabian's Story, " the book chronicles Fabian's life starting with the immigration of his ancestors, through his life on the farm, in the CCC, in the military, and then through the development of his businesses and his family. The book will be available during the services.

Fabian was a life member of the Elks Lodge, a life member of the Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree, and a longtime member of the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene, in 1984.

Survivors include his seven sons and six daughters, James A. Mack of Middleton, Idaho, Jerrold F. Mack of St. George, Utah, John P. Mack of Montrose, Colo., Jeffrey S. Mack of Oak Harbor, Wash., Joseph D. Mack of St. George, Utah, Jason R. Mack, of Montrose, Colo., Jordan T. Mack of Littleton, Colo., Joyce I. Mahlum of Longview, Wash., Janice Mack Talcott of Olympia, Wash., Julia K. Crippin of Montrose, Colo., Jacqueline Mack Hill of Hermiston, Judith Mack Cameron of Lake Oswego, and Jillona M. Moretti of San Antonio, Texas; 22 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; four brothers and two sisters, Wendelin, Mack of Hermiston, Larry Mack of Minot, N.D., Tony Mack of Karlsruhe, N.D., Dan Mack of Baker City, Peggy Keller of Minot, N.D., and Barbara Goin of Albany; and his former wife, Beatha, of Ontario.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Pathway Hospice, 323 W. Idaho Ave., Ontario, OR 97914; The Knights of Columbus, Council 1656, Ontario; or The Elks Education Scholarship, Ontario.

Ella Craven

Ella Marie Geils Craven, 94, of Baker City died February 17, 2004, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.

Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St. Private interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Ella was born on May 12, 1909, at Baker City, the second daughter of eight children born to Fred G. and Bertha Sophia Schiller Geils. She attended Baker City schools. She married Loren G. Craven of Baker City in 1927. They had two children, Carol and Arnold.

The family moved to Boise, Idaho in 1941 where Ella worked many years at the Boise Water Co. and Loren was a baker for Eddy's Bakery. In 1951, Loren enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and home was many places, until 1971 when they returned to Baker City.

Ella said Baker was always their home. She traveled extensively in these years and lived in Europe, Alaska and eight different states. She said the water was best here of anywhere she had lived and she loved the mountains.

Although she worked cashiering and selling for 32 years, she loved being home and caring for her family. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed needlepoint, and making afghans, 38 of which she gave to relatives and friends. She had much sadness in her lifetime, but she continued to smile. She also enjoyed playing cards, pinochle and bridge.

Survivors include her four granddaughters, Pamela of Indiana, Lynetta of Texas, Angela of Idaho and Bonnita of Washington; and several dear nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Loren; her two children, Carol Scott and Arnold Craven; three brothers, Walter, George, and Ralph Geils; four sisters, Aletha Howe Mayo, Mabel Voyles, Doris Washington, and Anna May Morey; and two grandsons, Bill and Dan Murdoch.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Senior Center or to the charity of one's choice through Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St., Baker City, OR 97814.
