Phyllis L. Olander Wichman, 76, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, died March 6, 2005, at a Council Bluffs hospital.
Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Broadway United Methodist in Council Bluffs.
She was born on Oct. 6, 1928, to Carl Melvin and Myrtle Dorothea Swanson Olander at Stanton, Iowa. She was a 1946 graduate of Elliott, Iowa, High School and a 1950 graduate of Tarkio College at Tarkio, Mo. Her post-graduate work was done at the University of Nebraska at Omaha; the University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls, Iowa; Iowa State University at Ames; and the University of Iowa at Iowa City.
She began her teaching career at Walnut, Iowa, in 1950. She taught business classes at Thomas Jefferson High School from 1953 to 1960. She taught at Abraham Lincoln from 1960 to 1962 and then returned to Thomas Jefferson where she was head of the business department and a lead teacher. She retired in 1990.
She was a member of the Broadway United Methodist Church where she a member of the choir. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, Delta Kappa Gamma Beta Chapter, Council Bluffs Retired School Personnel, Federated Women of Iowa, Council Bluffs Art Council, Chapter GQ of PEO, AAUW Study Group and Book Review Group, Joslyn Art Museum and JAMA Southwest Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Darold O. Wichman, who died on Jan. 2, 1991; her son-in-law, Joel Waldo of Baker City, who died on Oct. 22, 2004; and her parents.
Survivors include her daughter, Cynthia A. Waldo of Baker City; son, Mark D. Wichman, and his wife, April, and daughter, Lisa D. Keathley, and her husband, Thomas, all of Omaha, Neb.; a brother and his wife, Merrilll and Sharon Olander of Elliott, Iowa; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews and numerous friends.

Lurley Sutton
Lurley A. Sutton, 78, of Gresham, a former Baker County resident, died March 2, 2005, at Fairlawn Good Samaritan Care Center in Gresham after a long illness.
There will be a celebration of her life at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Buckhorn Restaurant Banquet Room in Vernonia.
Lurley Alveda Sass Sutton was born on Nov. 22, 1926, at Richland to Claus and Alveda Morrison Sass. She was raised and educated at Richland. After her high school graduation, Lurley moved to Portland. She worked for the Army Corps of Engineers where Lurley met her future sister-in-law, Madge Heman, who introduced her to Clyde.
She married Clyde Sutton on June 30, 1946, at Richland. After their marriage they made their home at Vernonia. Clyde and Lurley celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary just two days before his death in 2001.
Among her interests, Lurley enjoyed doing for her family and friends. She was an excellent cook — just ask anyone who had one of her infamous cotton-filled biscuits. She also enjoyed sewing and crocheting. Lurley loved to socialize.
She also was preceded in death by her parents, Claus and Alveda Sass.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Jerry Bruce of Gresham and Sherry and Jerry Hays of La Grande; two grandchildren, Sandy Meshke, and her husband, Steve, of Warrenton and Jason Hays and his wife, Rheadean, of La Grande; and four great-grandchildren, Emily Meshke, Ryan Meshke, Breanne Hays and Noelle Hays; two brothers, Orin Sass of Baker City and Norma Sass of Yuba City, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Madge Heman and Wally Sutton; and several nieces and nephews.

‘Reta' Powell
Ireta A. "Reta" Powell, 88, of Baker City, died March 2, 2005, with her family at her side.
Her graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Mount Hope Cemetery.
She was born at Preston, Idaho, to George Ames and Ava Inez Ransom on Oct. 17, 1916. She received her education at Preston and Grace, Idaho. She loved summers as a child when her mother and siblings would join their father camping in the mountains. She talked often of her escapades.
Reta married Harold M. Powell on Feb. 3, 1941, at Kenmore, Wyo. They lived most of their married life in Idaho and Oregon. They had three children, Geraldine, Gary and Diana. As a family, they enjoyed many camping and fishing adventures.
Reta was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. In her younger years, she could whip up a beautiful family dinner at the drop of a hat. As her children married, they returned often and enjoyed Mom's fried chicken and many games of pinochle.
She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, canning and gardening. Her years working at Levinger's Drug Store were fond in her heart. She was a member of the Degree of Honor Lodge and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Her husband died in 1982 and she lived on her own until 2003.
Survivors include her children, Geraldine "Gerri" Smith of Portland, Gary and Jackie Powell of Hermiston, and Diana and Bruce Burningham of Baker City; her sister, Elaine Nate of Montpelier, Idaho; brother, Charles Ransom, and his wife, Susan, of Turkey; grandchildren, Brent Smith, Bryan Smith, John and Ronda Powell, Greg and Brenda Goodyear, Andrew Anderson, Todd and Jolynne Welter, Becky and Joe Lazdauskas and Sheila and Joel Baker; 11 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sister, Norma Moser; and brothers, Loren Ransom and Gerald Ransom.

‘Marcy' Sapp
Marcelee Jane "Marcy" Sapp, 68, a former Baker City resident, died Feb. 27, 2005, at her home in North Las Vegas, Nev.
Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Gray's West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. Pastor Roger Scovil of the Baker City Christian Church will officiate.
Marcelee was born on Jan. 21, 1937, at Lone Beach, Calif., to Allen "Eldon" Brooks and Louise Thelma Brooks. She was raised with one sister, Sandra Louise Brooks. Marcy married Gerald "Jerry" Sapp in Las Vegas, Nev., on Sept. 9, 1955.
They shared their home in Orange County, Calif., and raised two children: Bradley "Brad" Eldon Sapp and Cathy Louise Sapp Christensen. Marcy and her husband and family retired in 1993 to Baker City to the delight of their daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In 1999, she relocated to North Las Vegas for health reasons. Marcelee will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Her wisdom, beauty, words of encouragement, and especially her faith, laughter and smile will be missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her sister.
Survivors include her two children, Bradley Eldon Sapp of North Las Vegas, Nev., and Cathy Louise Christensen of Baker City; grandchildren, Joseph Allen Charbonneau of Baker City, Jeffrey John Charbonneau of Boise, Jillian Brook Sapp of North Las Vegas, Nev., and Crystal Lee Charbonneau of Baker City; and great-grandchildren, Joseph David Charbonneau of San Diego and Maddox Lee Charbonneau of Boise.

Daren Spencer
Daren H. Spencer, 62, of Baker City, died Feb. 27, 2005, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.
There will be a celebration of his life at 2 p.m. Friday at Gray's West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave. Visitations will be until 8 o'clock tonight at Gray's West & Co.
Daren was born to Harlow and Evelyn on July 31, 1942, at Baker City. He lived his entire life in Baker County where he farmed.
Daren was a Baker High School graduate and was well-known as a local artist and photographer. He was kind-hearted and loved Baker County.
Survivors include his lifetime partner, Louise Shreffler of Baker City; best friend and sister, Joy Hoff of The Dalles; and daughters, Shannon Brown, Raegan Spencer and Kelly Taylor-Wilson, all of Utah.

Helen Sager
Helen Sager, 83, a lifelong Baker County resident, died Feb. 26, 2005, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.
Her memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Lutheran Church, 1734 Third St. Pastor Mel Harris will officiate.
Helen was born on Oct. 19, 1921, at Richland to John and Magdalena Nave. She was the seventh of nine siblings who were raised at Richland.
She graduated as valedictorian from Eagle Valley High School at Richland. She married Lorenzil C. Raley on Sept. 30, 1939, at Weiser, Idaho.
The couple had two children. Helen enjoyed raising her children and taking care of her family.
On Jan. 29, 1968, she married John Sager. They spent many good years camping and fishing.
During her early years, Helen worked at the Oregon Lumber Co. Later she became the librarian at Brooklyn Elementary School where she worked until her retirement.
Helen was always ready for a game of pinochle with friends and family. She was also a loyal Trail Blazers fan and eagerly anticipated every game. She was a longtime member of the First Lutheran Church.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, John and Magdalena Nave; Lorenzil Raley and John Sager; and six siblings, Anna Ballard, Claus Nave, Margaret Neuman, Walter Nave, Dora Hilzer, Christina Brown.
Survivors include daughter, Shila Hessler, and her husband, Gene, of Fairview; son, Larry Raley, and his wife, Beverly, of Baker City; sisters, Freda Johnston of Richland, Wash., and Betty Wieber of Hillsboro; granddaughters and their husbands, Cherie and Scott Ludwig of Milwaukie, Gail and Bob Hommel of Canby, and Stephanie and Chris Mays of Huntington; grandsons and their wives, Todd and Carol Wyatt of Portland and Lance and Denise Raley of Baker City; six treasured great-grandchildren, Courtney and Katelynne Raley, Jessica and Paul Wyatt, Hollie Mays, and Danielle Ludwig; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lillian Hatfield
Lillian Hatfield, 83, of Baker City, died Feb. 27, 2005, at Grande Ronde Hospital in La Grande.
Her memorial service and reception was Tuesday at Coles Funeral Home. Pastor Gordon Bond of the Richland Christian Church officiated.
Mrs. Hatfield was born on April 19, 1921, at Des Moines, Iowa, to Merrill and Charlotte Porter. She married Don Hatfield on Aug. 24, 1940, at Des Moines. In 1985, she moved to Baker City, where she lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Jim Morrissey.
Lillian liked to read and cook, and she enjoyed gardening. She loved her family, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. They were her whole life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Don, and four siblings.
Survivors include her children, Don and Mary Hatfield, of Blue Grass, Iowa, Mike and Valee Hatfield of Alaska, and David and Linda Hatfield, Steve and Linda Farstad and Judy and James Morrissey, all of Baker City; three sisters and one brother, all of Des Moines, Iowa; 21 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.

Margaret Ainsworth
Margaret Helen Ainsworth died Feb. 28, 2005, in Baker City.
At her request there will be no funeral. Her friends and family will have many memories of her to share now and always.
She was born on March 16, 1919, at Mendota, Ill., to Edwin Bowling and Carrie Belle Ashley Bowling. Margaret was raised in Wyoming, Colorado and California.
Her father was a Methodist minister and a circuit rider between small towns in Wyoming and Colorado, before being assigned to a church in California.
Margaret graduated high school and married Harold W. Davis at Campbell, Calif. They had two children, Charles Edwin Davis and Ann Irene Davis.
The marriage later ended in divorce. Margaret married John Frances Ainsworth. They had another son, Ashley Bowling Ainsworth.
The couple spent the majority of their married life at Cloverdale, Calif., until John's passing. Margaret began visiting Pine Valley in the '70s and always loved it there, becoming a resident in 1999.
Margaret was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses and enjoyed visiting with her friends in the congregation. She also loved to travel. Margaret loved all the animals and birds that lived in or visited the area.
Survivors include her loving children, Ann Starke of Halfway, Ashley and Karen Ainsworth of Kelseyville, Calif., Ed Davis of Lattimore, N.C.; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John, who died in 1971; two brothers and three sisters, including a twin sister, who died in infancy.

Virgle Clelland
Virgle C. Clelland, 77, a former Baker County resident, died Feb. 15, 2005, at the Boise Veterans Hospital.
His graveside service was Feb. 19 at Park View Cemetery in New Plymouth, Idaho.
Virgle was born on May 17, 1927, at Midvale, Idaho, to Edgar Raymond and Hilda Eva Heinrich Clelland. He was a former member of the Boise River Cattleman's Association, the Idaho Cattleman's Association and the American Quarter Horse Association.
Virgle loved his cattle more than he loved his wife. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and he enjoyed and loved his family.
Survivors include six children; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

‘Chuck' Britton
Charles Howard "Chuck" Britton, 84, of Baker City, died Feb. 26, 2004, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. There will be a reception afterward at the United Methodist Church, 1919 Second St.
Visitations will be until 7 o'clock tonight at Coles Funeral Home.
Chuck was born on Sept. 3, 1920, to Howard C. and Helena Britton. He was raised on the family homestead near Lusk, Wyo., and graduated from Torrington High School in 1937.
He married Vivian Vondra, his childhood friend, on Dec. 31, 1939, at Torrington, Wyo. Chuck and Viv moved west, living in Idaho, Seattle and Portland. Chuck worked as a welder in the shipyards during World War II.
They moved to Baker in September 1945 and established Britton Bros. with his brother, Lester. In 1948 he and Vivian became sole owners of the farm equipment company, renaming it Britton Equipment Co.
Having grown up on the arid, eastern Wyoming prairie, Chuck appreciated the potential in the water-rich Baker Valley. He pioneered both sprinkler and gravity-flow irrigation throughout the county.
In the late 1960s he recruited his sons, Howard and Harold, from Oregon State University to become partners in Britton Equipment. Leo Poe became the third partner in 1972.
At that time the product line was expanded to include Case and David Brown lines and eventually John Deere and New Holland as well. After Chuck sold his final interest in the business, he continued as an adviser and a salesman until his final retirement in 1985.
After selling the business, he and Vivian traveled extensively in the United States and enjoyed spending winters in Arizona. Vivian died in 1988.
In 1989, Chuck married Lois Butts, a longtime family friend. They enjoyed 13 years together until her death in 2002.
Chuck was a life member of the Baker Elks Lodge and a member of Oregon Trailers Good Sam Club. He enjoyed square dancing, camping and playing bingo and pinochle games with friends and family.
Survivors include his four children and their spouses, Evelyn and John Plankinton of Menlo Park, Calif., Howard and Sandee Britton of Baker City, Harold and Judy Britton of Hillsboro and Betty Braswell of Baker City; eight grandchildren, Chuck Britton and his wife, Abby, of Tigard, Dave Britton and his wife, Kristina, of Beaverton, Lisa Britton, Ed Braswell and his wife, Diane, Emily Bryant and her husband, Bob, all of Baker City, Bryce Britton of Seattle, Amy James and her husband, Werner, of Hillsboro, and Robin Plankinton of Menlo Park, Calif.; six great-grandchildren, Vivian Britton, Levi Britton, Tyler Britton, Jordan Bryant, Katee Braswell and Justin Braswell; brother, Erle Britton and his wife, Neva, of Phoenix, Ariz.; longtime friend, Milton Prowell of Baker City, and special friend, Myrtle Colvard of Baker City.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth and Alice, and a brother, Lester.
