Maxine Schlegel, 81, a former Baker City resident, died Dec. 19, 2004, at Nampa, Idaho.
At her request there will be no services. Disposition was by cremation.
Maxine was born June 17, 1923, at Charleston, W.Va., to P.O. and Mae Carnes Nicely.
She received her education at Fort Saint Jones, Canada. She graduated from Grant Union High School in John Day.
Maxine worked at several restaurants in Baker City and Elgin.
She is survived by her son, Dean Schouten of Nampa; a brother and sister-in-law, Phil and Polly Nicely of Baker City; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, P.O. and Mae Nicely; her husband, Willie Schlegel; her son, Victor Schouten; a sister, Geraldine Nicely; and a brother, Dale Nicely.
June Bennett
June Bennett, 79, of Baker City, died Dec. 15, 2004, at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
The date of her memorial service will be announced later.
June was born in the Fort Francis territories along the Canadian and American borders on June 1, 1926, to John Julies and Nellie Borcher. She was the youngest of three children.
Her family moved to Evanston, Wash., in the 1930s were her father, "J.J.", found employment in the lumber industry and in private enterprise up and down the Oregon and Washington coast.
June was a 1944 graduate of North Bend High School. She went on to join the Cadet Nursing Corps and attended the St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in Baker City. She graduated in 1949.
She met and married Dale Bennett of Baker City in 1948, beginning life on the family ranch at Keating where their three children were born. The family moved to Baker City in 1958 where June began working at her career as a registered nurse and mother until retirement.
June was a woman of many and varied interests. She lived to fish and to read books. She was an excellent bowler and loved golfing. She liked watching birds, walking in the surrounding trees and sage.
Survivors include her husband, Dale Bennett; her older brother, Richard Borcher of Los Molinos, Calif.; her oldest son, Vance Bennett, his wife, Celeste, and their three children, Beamus, Cooper and Duncan, of Winnemucca, Nev.; her second oldest son, Daniel, and his friend, Steve Rabitory, of Portland; and her daughter, Leslee Baily, and her husband, William Baily, and their daughter, Nellie, of Baker City.
She was preceded in death by her parents, J.J. and Nellie Borcher; and her oldest brother, William Borcher, of Coos Bay.

Russell Williams
Russell Davis Williams, 91, who grew up on his family's ranch at Muddy Creek, died Dec. 13, 2004, at Sun City, Calif.
Mr. Williams, the youngest of seven children born to Harry and Ida Williams, graduated from Muddy Creek High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1935 and served on the USS Minneapolis, which took him to Hawaii, through the Panama Canal, and to Central America.
After being discharged, he married Maxine McGrath of North Powder in 1939. He and his late brother, Ed Williams, a longtime Baker City resident, both worked for Basche-Sage Hardware Co. for more than 30 years.
In 1951, Russell and Maxine moved to Payette, Idaho, where he served as Basche-Sage's sales representative in southwestern Idaho and they raised two daughters.
In 1978, they retired to Sun City. Although he gave up trout fishing when he left the Northwest, Russell remained an avid fan of big band music and the New York Yankees throughout his life.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Maxine Williams; two daughters, Diane Wilson of Washington, D.C., and Maryann Green of Tacoma, Wash.; a sister, Hazel Toney, of Baker City; four grandsons and one granddaughter, and four great-grandchildren.
Don McPherson
Donald Andrew "Don" McPherson, 85, a former Richland resident, died Dec. 8, 2004, at his daughter's home in Kuna, Idaho.
His funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Pine Baptist Church in Halfway. Interment will be at Pine Haven Cemetery in Halfway. Afterward, friends are invited to join the family for a reception at the Pine Baptist Church.
Don was born on June 4, 1919, at Silt, Colo., to Daniel Alphonso and Mary Isallia Garven McPherson. He was also raised and educated at Silt.
Don and Gladys met in 1940 and exchanged many letters. They had originally met at a movie house where Gladys worked as an usher. In 1941, Don and Gladys began their wonderful 62 years of marriage. In their early married years, Don worked for the Climax Mine in Leadville, Colo. They had four daughters: Donna, Lana, June and Suzie; and a foster son, Dean.
During Don's life, he ran several ranches. In 1977 the family moved to Richland where Don ran the Daly Creek Ranch. After retirement, Don and Gladys spent the spring and summer at Richland, but headed south to enjoy the winters at Yuma, Ariz.
Don enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Cattlemen's, Railroad and Mining associations.
Survivors include his daughters and their husbands, Donna and Al Geiser of Roset, Wyo., Lana and Terry Scott of Kuna, Idaho, June and Larry McNamee of Sun City, Ariz., and Marv and Susie Powell of Eagle, Idaho; a foster son and daughter-in-law, Dean and Becky Goodner of Kuna, Idaho; 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Don was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gladys, who died in 2003.

‘Annie' Robertson
Anna Dorothy "Annie" Robertson, 66, a longtime Halfway resident, died Dec. 10, 2004, at her home in Baker City.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Therese Catholic Church in Halfway. Vault Interment will be at Pine Haven Cemetery in Halfway. Friends are invited to a reception at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall after the interment.
Annie was born on Dec. 15, 1937, at Russian Mission, Alaska, to George and Mary Stevens. She was raised and educated in Alaska. Annie cut her education short at the age of 15, when she quit school so she could care for her very ill grandfather.
She had two children with Jack Revette: Alan, who was born in 1961, and Stella, who was born in 1963. In 1975 she married Jack Robertson in Fairbanks, Alaska.
During Annie's life she worked as a nurse's aide in several hospitals, and she also worked as a waitress. She enjoyed telling the tales of the big earthquake in Alaska as well as the stories of her childhood.
Annie enjoyed playing cards, working puzzles, knitting, bird watching and working in her yard. Many will remember how much Annie loved going for coffee — an added bonus was adding dessert to the coffee. She enjoyed being a member of the VFW Auxiliary 7847 and participated as much as she could.
The community of Halfway will miss her daily stroll down Main Street to pick up her mail or a few groceries. She loved to have her hair dyed and fixed beautifully high on her head, and then add her "bling-bling" (sparkly jewelry). She had a kind heart, a sweet giggle and will be missed by all who had the opportunity to know her.
Annie is survived by her children, Alan and Stella; a granddaughter, Christine Plunkett; and a stepsister, Mary Edwards.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Robertson, who died in 1989; and her brother, Esta Stevens, who died in 1969.

Frances Adams
Frances Elizabeth Adams, 90, a former Baker County resident, died Dec. 11, 2004, at Elgin.
There will be a celebration of her life Saturday at 11 a.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St., La Grande. Sally Wiens will officiate. Interment will be at the Elgin Cemetery.
Visitations will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley.
Frances Elizabeth Adams was born on Feb. 4, 1914, at Keating to Frank and Elizabeth Beber Gilkson. She attended school at North Powder until her senior year when she moved to Elgin. She played on the 1932 Elgin High School championship basketball team.
After graduation, Frances met and married Ernest Adams at Union in 1933. Together the couple moved to Portland where Frances worked in the shipyards during World War II.
After the war ended, Frances and Ernest returned to Elgin where together they opened Adams Supply Store. Frances was the bookkeeper and operator until her retirement in 1976. The couple traveled widely together, including trips to China, Hawaii, Alaska, and Mexico.
She was very involved in the Good Sam Club, was a member of the Elgin Stampeders, the Elgin Stampeders drill team and the Women's Service club. She enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, playing cards, riding horses and spending time with family.
Survivors include her husband, Ernest Adams of Elgin; children and their spouses, Farrell and Jerry Maxwell of Haines, Betty and Gale Martin of Elgin, and Teri Adams and her companion, Randy High, of Portland; grandchildren, Cheri Maxwell, Allen Maxwell, Marce Maxwell, Sheri Anderson and Adam Erickson; great-grandchildren, Jarrod Maxwell, Robie Maxwell and Tymra Anderson; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Nellie Dyke; and one brother, Ross Gilkson.

Floribel McCoy
Floribel Eddy McCoy, 80, of Irrigon, a former Baker County resident, died Nov. 22, 2004, at her home.
Her memorial service was Nov. 29 at the Columbia View Community Church in Irrigon. Interment was at the Desert Lawn Memorial Cemetery in Irrigon.
Floribel, one of 11 children, was born on March 29, 1924, to George and Lucy Eddy at Malheur City, which at that time was an active mining town, now a ghost town. She was raised on a homestead on Willow Creek between Malheur City and Ironside.
She attended elementary school in a one-room schoolhouse at Grouse Creek. She then stayed with a sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Elaine Trimble, at Hereford. She attended school there and graduated from Hereford High School.
She then graduated from Eastern Oregon College (now Eastern Oregon University) at La Grande with a teaching degree. Floribel spent her entire elementary teaching career at Irrigon.
She met her husband, Benny, at Irrigon while he was home on leave from the U.S. Navy during World War II. He had just returned from a tour of duty in the South Pacific and it was love at first sight for the couple. They were married on Jan. 19, 1946, at Pasco, Wash.
Survivors include her husband, Benny of Irrigon; a son, Terry McCoy, and his wife, Linda, of Everett, Wash.; granddaughter, Tana, of Everett; brothers, Clayton Eddy and Nick Eddy, both of Vale, and Edward Eddy of The Dalles; a sister, Elaine Trimble of Hereford; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Lucy Eddy; sisters, Genevieve Kendall, Letha Davidson, Melva Beers, Joan Prindle and Jeanne Eddy; and a brother, Emery Eddy.
Burns Mortuary of Hermiston was in charge of arrangements.
Leona Hutton
Leona Fae Hutton, 50, of Baker City, died Dec. 10, 2004, at St. Luke's Hospital in Boise.
Her memorial service will be at 2 p.m Wednesday at the Church of the Nazarene, 1250 Hughes Lane. Pastor Lennie Spooner of the church will officiate.
She was born at John Day on Dec. 9, 1954, to Gene and Betty Sissel. When she was 4 the family settled in Baker City. She was a 1973 Baker High School graduate. She married Ernest W. Hutton on March 23, 1984.
In the late 1980s she graduated from La Grande College of Beauty. She worked in several beauty salons in Baker City. Most recently she was at The Last Resort Salon.
Leona was an avid reader who shared her love of books with others. She also enjoyed tending the flowers in her garden. She was especially proud of her red geraniums.
Survivors include her husband, Ernest Hutton of Baker City; her son, Eric Hutton and daughter-in-law Heather Hutton, and grandson, Hudson Hutton of Hillsboro; her mother, Betty Sissel, and grandmother, Mary Fretwell, of Baker City; her aunt Lana Lueschow and uncle Roger Lueschow of Maple Valley, Wash.; her brother, Bruce Sissel, and sister-in-law, Lynn Sissel of Edgewood, Wash.; her twin brother, Leslie Sissel, and sister-in-law, Vickie Sissel of Ontario; her sister-in-law Tina Sissel Watson and her husband, Rick Watson; her father-in-law, Buster Tiffany of Baker City; her sister-in-law, Lorene, and her husband, Bud Lewis of Sherwood; her sister-in-law, Marlene, and her husband, Neal Bork of Sumpter; her sister-in-law, Karen, and her husband, Erving Logan of Baker City; her brother-in-law, Ron, and his wife, Doris Hutton of Baker City; her good friend, Shawna Boothby; her two faithful companions, Max and Benny; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Lyle Sissel; her father, Gene Sissel; and her mother-in-law, Anna Tiffany.

Inez Miller
Inez E. Miller, 81, of Heppner, a Baker City native, died Dec. 7, 2004, at Hermiston Terrace Assisted Living Facility.
Her funeral was Monday at the United Methodist Church in Heppner. A concluding service and interment was at the Heppner Masonic Cemetery.
Mrs. Miller was born on Sept. 4, 1923, at Baker City to Homer and Lucy Hunt Wellman. She grew up and attended school at Baker City where she graduated from high school.
She attended and graduated from Eastern Oregon College (Eastern Oregon University) at La Grande. She began teaching at Riverside School in Pendleton.
She married Sgt. Richard T. Meador on May 16, 1945. He was stationed with the U.S. Air Corps at Walla Walla, Wash.
The couple lived at Heppner for most of their married lives. Mrs. Miller taught her first kindergarten class in 1949. She continued teaching other classes in the Morrow County School District until her retirement in 1976.
She especially enjoyed seeing students she had taught and was always proud of their accomplishments.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Meador, in 1975. In 1980, she married Robert A. Miller at Los Osos, Calif. They lived at Brookings where they operated a commercial fishing business. Mr. Miller died in 1999.
Survivors include her daughters, Leslee Meador of Heppner and Tami Sneddon of Mount Vernon, Wash.; grandchildren, Genny Sneddon, Jeff Sneddon and Amanda Sneddon; a brother, Stanley Wellman of Baker City; stepson, Robin Miller of Federal Way, Wash.; and stepmother, Effie Turner of Baker City.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Becky Sue Meador in 1959.

Mabel Louise Mattes
Mabel Louise Mattes, 72, a Baker City resident for the past 67 years, died peacefully at her home Dec. 11, 2004, in the company of Hospice Care and her loving family.
Her memorial service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Baker City Christian Church 2998 Eighth St.
Louise, affectionately known by her family as "DeeDee", was born March 25, 1932, at Caldwell, Idaho, to Lloyd and Clara Cardwell. She was married to John Mattes for 54 years and was a homemaker who also worked at Albertsons and Merle Norman for a number of years.
Louise is survived by her husband John; her daughter, Pam Mattes Harsin of Seattle; her son, Stan Mattes of Palm Springs, Calif.; her grandchildren, Jason Harsin of Los Angeles, Amy Harsin Furlan and Lindsey Harsin, both of Seattle.
Louise was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Baker City Christian Church Building Fund.
