Joe Jewett

Joe Jewett, 93, of La Grande, died Feb. 19, 2005.

He was born May 13, 1911 in Helena, Montana to George and Alice Geary Jewett.

His memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church in La Grande. Visitations will be until 4 p.m. today at Loveland Funeral Chapel.

Joe was raised at Winston, Mont. He went to electrical school in Chicago, and graduated after one year. He returned to Aberdeen, Wash., to finish his high school education as an adult.

He worked about 1Þ years before deciding to go to college and into the ministry. He attended Whitman College at Walla Walla, Wash., for one year.

In September 1935 he started preaching at Montesano, Wash. There he married Helen Fry on September 28, 1935.

Joe graduated with a bachelor of theology degree and a bachelor of oratory degree from the Northwest Christian College at Eugene.

He worked his way through college by starting a new congregation at a Christian Church in Florence until 1938. Joe and Helen moved to Enid, Okla., for graduate work.

He preached at Fairview Christian Church in Sandcreek, Okla., until 1940 where he earned his masters of arts degree and bachelor of divinity. In 1941, he moved to Milton-Freewater, and preached at the Christian Church until 1946.

Joe and Helen made their home in Heppner for two years while he preached at the Christian Church. They moved to Baker City and preached at the First Christian Church for more than 21 years. Joe then moved to Enterprise and ministered at the Christian Church from 1969 until his retirement in June of 1976.

After his retirement, he worked at Red's Horse Ranch in Minam River for one summer. Joe and Helen managed Minam Lodge for two summers in 1977 and 1978.

In the fall of 1978 he moved to winter at Yuma, Ariz. He then went to Goldendale and picked up parts for John Deere Co. between Goldendale and Portland for four summers.

In September 1979 he worked part time at First Christian Church at Yuma, Ariz., working with seniors for five years.

In 1984, he worked three months for Far East Broadcasting Co. in Saipan. He then worked for a travel agency, escorting groups all over the world for five years. Joe traveled to every continent in the world except Antarctica.

He sold fire insurance at Yuma, Ariz., for one year, receiving many selling awards before moving to Centralia, Wash., in May of 1993.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Helen; two daughters and their spouses, Joanne and Richard Sweet of La Grande, and Doris and Gerald Lundmark of Enterprise; son and daughter-in-law, Robert D. and Joyce Jewett of Chehalis, Wash.; six grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers and one sister; his granddaughter, Bethel Sweet Gomez; and two grandsons, Robert Joseph Jewett and Andrew William Howard.

Madge Singer

Madge Frances Singer, 84, a former Baker County resident, died Feb. 15, 2005, at a College Place, Wash., nursing home.

Her funeral was today at Herring Groseclose Funeral Home at Walla Walla. Pastor Robin Peterson of the Presbyterian Church officiated. Burial was at Mountain View Cemetery in Walla Walla.

Mrs. Singer was born on March 5, 1920, at Unity to James and Isabel Brown. She was a Baker High School graduate.

She married Carl H. Singer on Sept. 1, 1940, at Baker City. They traveled to Wallowa Lake for their honeymoon in a Model A Ford.

Madge was employed by Woolworth's Department Store in Baker City from 1938 to 1943. She then worked at the Baker Payless store from 1963 to 1965. She and her husband then moved to Burns and she stayed home to raise her family.

When they moved to Walla Walla in 1968 she provided child care for 10 years. She worked for D & K Frozen Foods Inc., from 1980 until her retirement in 1984.

She enjoyed walking, music, reading, camping and taking care of her roses. She had a great sense of humor and could always make people laugh by being silly or making a face. She loved animals, especially her dog, Cindy.

She loved being with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and people in general. Madge was loved by all who knew her.

Survivors include her husband; four sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Loretta Singer, Gary Singer, and Robert and Wanda Singer, all of Walla Walla, and Richard Singer of Vancouver, Wash.; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Estes and Maxine McIntyre; and a brother, Maurice Brown.

‘Mary' Cochran

Margaret L. ‘Mary' Cochran, 78, of Baker City, died Feb. 14, 2005, at St. Lukes Regional Medical Center in Boise.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Francis de Sales Cathedral, First and Church streets. The Rev. Robert C. Irwin will celebrate the Mass. There will be a graveside service at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Prairie City Cemetery. Pastor Darrell Johnson of Grace Chapel of Prairie City will officiate. Visitations will be until 7 o'clock tonight at Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St.

Mrs. Cochran was born on Feb. 18, 1926, at John Day to Carl and Mabel Gunther Born. She was raised in Grant County and received her education in Grant and Baker counties.

She married Laurance W. "Larry" Cochran on April 6, 1947, at John Day. In 1954, they moved from Prairie City to Baker City. Mrs. Cochran worked for the Baker County Education Service District for 22 years.

She enjoyed doing crafts and was an avid reader. She enjoyed fishing and loved animals. She dearly loved her grandkids. Mary was able to see the funny things in life. She loved life and her family. She was a member of St. Francis de Sales Cathedral.

Survivors include her husband, Laurance W. "Larry" Cochran of Baker City; daughter, Linda Cochran of Ontario; daughter and son-in-law, Vickie and Lee Mullin of Prairie City; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Elizabeth Mullin and Damon Pope and great grandson, Zachary; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Darrell and Dorothy Johnson; several stepgreat-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Alva Courtney

Alva Courtney, 90, of Sweet Home, died Feb. 14, 2005.

A graveside service was held today at the North Powder Cemetery. Workman & Steckley Funeral Chapel of Sweet Home handled the arrangements.

Alva was born Dec. 10, 1914, in Anadarko, Okla., to Joseph and Myrtle English Courtney.

He married Pauline Coates on Aug. 7, 1937, in Haines. She preceded him in death in 1972.

He served in the U.S. Army in World War II.

Alva is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Juanita and Nick Hutchins of Sweet Home; two grandsons, Jeff Hutchins and his wife, Sally, of Lebanon and Trent Hutchins and his wife, Julie, of Fresno, Calif.; two granddaughters, Sheli Hutchins of Richmond, Calif., and Kim Hutchins of Portland; and three great-grandchildren.

Pansey Allen

Pansey P. Allen, 83, a longtime Baker City resident, died Feb. 11, 2005, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.

Her memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church, 1995 Fourth St. Pastor Susan Barnes will officiate. Inurnment will be later at the Eagle Valley Cemetery in Richland.

Pansey was born on Sept. 19, 1921, at Fruitland, Idaho, to Gordon and Grace Timson Smith. She was raised in Malheur County. She moved to Baker City in the early 1950s.

In Baker City, Pansey managed the Sears Catalog Store for 17 years. She served two terms on the Baker City Council from 1971 through 1979. She was the recipient of the Baker Jaycees Distinguished Service Award.

Pansey received numerous awards for her volunteer work and spent more than 10 years volunteering at the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center. She was a member of P.E.O. Chapter CJ Sisterhood, Baker County Soroptimists and was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church. She married Sherman Allen on May 15, 1971.

Survivors include her husband, Sherman Allen of Baker City; her children, Fred Mull Jr., and Sandra Allen and her husband, John, of Salem; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Pansey was preceded in death by her parents and 10 siblings.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Oregon Diabetic Association, First Presbyterian Church or to the charity of one's choice through Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St., Baker City, OR 97814.

‘Tom' Boyd

Arthur Thomas "Tom" Boyd, 76, a longtime North Powder community leader and rancher, died Feb. 10, 2005, at his home in Baker City.

There will be a celebration of life memorial service at 1 p.m. Saturday at the North Powder Community Methodist Church with a reception afterward at the Wolf Creek Grange in North Powder.

Tom was born on Oct. 19, 1928, at Baker City to Arthur Stanley and Sarah Miller Boyd. He attended school in Baker City and was a 1951 graduate of Oregon State University at Corvallis with a degree in animal husbandry.

In 1946, he married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Ellen Wood. The couple celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary in June. They had three sons.

Upon graduating from Oregon State, Tom and Ruth moved to the ranch on Wolf Creek at North Powder. The 43 years he spent on the ranch were the best years of his life.

He truly enjoyed ranching and working with his father and sons in the lamb and wool industry. He also enjoyed working with his brother-in-law, Boyd Brown, in the purchase of local wool pools.

Tom traveled the Western United States buying lambs for numerous packers and feeders and buying wool for Draper Wool & Co. based in Boston. The Boyd family affiliation with Draper Wool & Co. encompassed three generations and more than 70 years.

Tom's honesty and integrity was well known and was the basis of his long and successful career. He made many lifelong friends in the livestock industry and was honored by the Idaho Wool Growers Association in 1998 for his contributions to the industry. He remained active in the affairs of the industry and discussed the sale of lambs the day he passed away.

Tom was very active in the local community. He served on the local school board and was chairman in his final year. He also served on the Education Service District Board.

He was a lifelong member of the Masonic Lodge and a Shriner, receiving his 50-year pin last year. He learned to fly while still in high school, having been taught by his uncle and role model, Harvey Miller.

Tom flew aerobatics and gave rides at many local county fairs in the PT-19 and aspired to be a World War II pilot, but the war ended too soon. He continued his love of flying by earning his commercial license and was a member of the Civil Air Patrol through his high school and college years. Later he served in the Oregon National Guard.

Tom loved to hunt. A major event every fall was the gathering of many of his friends from all over the state for hunting season. He knew and loved the mountains around North Powder, especially the Shaw Mountain, Summit Springs and Rock Creek areas.

He was a successful hunter and instilled in his sons the love of hunting. His favorite food was venison back strap with sheepherder potatoes.

Tom and Ruth enjoyed traveling. They made several trips overseas. In his later years, they enjoyed snowbirding to the Southwest and Mexico, searching out aeronautical museums and historical sites.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Monona Weber; grandson, Jacob Arthur; and nephews, Carl and Kevin Weber.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Ellen; sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Kathy of Walla Walla, Wash., Stan and Ann of Eagle, Idaho, and Dave and Urmi of Bend; grandchildren, Kim Boyd of Milton-Freewater, Jon and Terri Boyd of Walla Walla, Wash., Regan and Sam Boyd of Eagle, Idaho, and Nicholas and Ross Boyd of Bend; great-granddaughter, Chelsea Boyd of Milton-Freewater; a sister, Margaret Brown of Baker City; Uncle Harvey and Aunt Dorothy Miller of Beaverton; cousins, Zona and F.B. Clarke of Baker City, Elinor Marie Neilson of Salt Lake City, Joan Barlow of Lindon, Utah, Helen and Larry Berg of La Grande, Paul and Cheren Wood of Salt Lake City, Keith and Virginia Long of Baker City; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Baker County Library Foundation Board, the Shriners Hospital for Children, the North Powder Community Church, Pathway Hospice or a charity of one's choice through Gray's West & Co., 1500 Dewey Ave., Baker City, OR 97814.

Elton Best

Elton Ralph Best, 85, a lifelong resident of Keating and Baker City, died Feb. 7, 2005, at his home.

His graveside service was today at Mount Hope Cemetery. Pastor Lennie Spooner of the First Church of the Nazarene officiated.

Elton was born on Oct. 10, 1919, at Keating to William Henry and Pearl Shulenbarger Best. He was raised at Keating and attended school at Keating and Baker City.

He worked in the sawmill for many years before changing careers to work for the natural gas company. At retirement, Elton was working for the U.S. Forest Service.

Elton met and married Eleanor Marie Franklin at Baker City. The couple had two children, Lynda L. Geyer and Gerald Elton Best. They were later divorced but remained friends.

Elton was set in his daily routine that included visiting Stockman's Tavern every morning for breakfast and conversation with all of his friends. He was very friendly and caring and had no problems making friends everywhere he went.

He was a wonderful family man, spending all of his time providing for his family and caring for them. He built the family home in Baker City by himself, even going as far as digging the basement by hand with just a shovel.

Elton was close to his sisters and, as they aged, he helped care for them and visited them weekly.

Survivors include his children, Lynda L. Geyer and her husband, Bill, of Navarre, Fla., and Gerald Elton Best, and his wife, Rita, of McMinnville; grandchildren, Rosann Ewbank, William Geyer, Gerald Best Jr., and Deanna Alexander; eight great-grandchildren; his good friend, Tammy Marie of Baker City; his ex-wife, Eleanor Marie Franklin of California; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents William H. and Pearl Best; brothers, Harold, Loyd, and John Best; and sisters Goldie Ewing and Olive Standefer.

Leona R. Monpas

Leona R. Monpas, 83, of Baker City, died Feb. 10, 2005, at her home.

Her graveside funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Mount Hope Cemetery. Pastor Ralph Holcomb will officiate.

Visitations will be held today until 7 p.m. at Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St.

Leona Rica Monpas was born June 18, 1921, at Mondovi, Wis., to Alvin and Lucillia (Craker) Lunderville. She received her schooling in Chippewa Falls and had special training in secretarial work.

On April 8, 1938, she married Leon John Monpas in Milwaukee, Wis. In 1941, the couple moved to Port Angeles, Wash., where they remained until 1966 when they moved to Astoria. They resided in Astoria until they came to Baker City in 2001.

Leona served as VFW secretary for 20 years. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed traveling, fishing, flea markets, antiques and playing cards.

She is survived by her husband, Leon; a son, Charles, and his wife, Lois, of Baker City; a daughter, Diane Wilkins, and her husband, Dale, of Carefree, Ariz.; grandchildren, Craig Monpas of Canby, Kent Monpas and his wife, Kara, and Lloyd Monpas of Casper, Wyo., Darrel Wilkins and his wife, Diana, of Snohomish, Wash., Diana Spak and her husband, Pat, of Woodinville, Wash., Kendra Van Cleave and her husband, Tony, of John Day and Kurtis Monpas of Boise; 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, one brother and one grandson.
