Vera Barnhart

Vera W. Glenn Barnhart, 86, of Boise, died Dec. 9, 2001, in a Boise hospital.

His memorial service was Dec. 12, 2001, at the Alden Waggoner Funeral Chapel in Boise. Inurnment is scheduled at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Vera was born Oct. 31, 1915, at Baker City to Glen Willett and Florence James Willett. She attended elementary school at Baker City and high school at Meridian, Idaho. She married James R. Glenn on May 11, 1935, at Boise. They had two children: Jacqueline and Gary.

She enjoyed fishing, was an avid dancer, a world traveler and she loved theater.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church; past noble grand of the Unity Rebekah Lodge No. 8, Odd Fellows Lodge; past president, Columbia No. 3, Ladies Auxiliary, Patriarchs Militant, IOOF; past president (1992-93), Department Association LAPM of Idaho IOOF; past noble grand, Rose Rebekah Lodge No. 18, IOOF (historical lodge); Eagles Auxiliary, former Elks Ladies Auxiliary of Boise; and Daughters of the American Revolution.

‘Ronnie' Doman

Ronald Elmer "Ronnie" Doman, 60, of Huntington, died June 13, 2002, peacefully at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.

His graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Mount Hope Cemetery. Friends and family will conduct the service. At his request, friends and family are invited to attend a gathering at the Doman Ranch to celebrate his life after the service.

Ron was born on Dec. 15, 1941, at Ontario to Roy and Judy Doman. He attended school at Ontario and played football for Oregon State University at Corvallis on a scholarship. The highlight of his career was when he participated in the Liberty Bowl in 1962 in Philadelphia, where Heisman trophy winner, Terry Baker, made a 99-yard winning touchdown.

Ron married Linda Jean Ralston on April 2, 1966, at Ontario. They later moved to the Huntington Ranch at the base of Lookout Mountain where they raised two children, Bill and Becky Doman.

Survivors include his wife, Linda of Huntington; his daughter, Becky of Salmon, Idaho; his son, Bill of Ontario; and his grandchildren, Wes and Mat of Shady Cove; a sister, Letha Steelman of Euless, Texas; a brother, Larry Doman of Yakima, Wash.; and numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.

David Williams

David Lee Williams, 62, a third generation Baker Valley rancher, died June 8, 2002.

There will be a private family graveside service Friday morning at Mount Hope Cemetery. A public celebration of life service for David will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at the Church of the Nazarene, 1250 Hughes Lane. Pastors Ron Kratzer and Lennie Spooner will officiate. Visitations will be until 7 o'clock tonight at Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St.

David was born the second son of Jess and Bessie Emery Williams on March 22, 1940, at Baker City. He attended local schools and Eastern Oregon State College (now Eastern Oregon University) at La Grande.

In 1962, he came home to run the family ranch. David, Barbara and Michael, through the years, have made innovative changes to carry the ranch into the next generation. They have moved from traditional range grazing of cattle to rotational field grazing. They were featured in the local newspaper with their yearly cattle drives from the ranch in the Baker Valley to rangeland approximately 15 miles away.

David enjoyed and had a talent for music. Because of his involvement with the Nazarene Church, he was a participant in the Nazarene Church's Easter and Christmas pageants for several years. He particularly enjoyed gospel music. He was made an honorary member of the Baker High School FFA Chapter and was an Oregon State FFA Star Farmer in his youth.

Some of the common interests David and Barbara enjoyed together were square dancing and traveling. David never knew a stranger. He enjoyed visiting with the local people and seeing the non-tourist part of areas he traveled to.

David took pride in his family. He lived the last three years courageously with cancer.

Survivors include his high school sweetheart and wife of more than 40 years, Barbara Erwin Williams; his children, Robin and Mike Jones of Heppner, Karen Williams of Portland and Michael and Josie Williams of Baker City; four granddaughters, Brianne and Kellee Jones, and Emmi and Tori Williams; and a brother, Donald Williams, of Portland.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Rachel Nocchi

Rachel J. Nocchi, 93, of Pasco, Wash., a former Halfway resident, died June 3, 2002, at Lourdes Medical Center in Pasco.

Her graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Pine Haven Cemetery in Halfway. Pastor Shawn Thatcher of Pine Baptist Church will officiate. Friends and family are invited to a gathering at the Lions Park for a time of fellowship and memories. Visitations will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St.

Rachel Julia Makinson was born Feb. 1, 1909, at Halfway. She was a daughter of John Frederick and Okie Updike Makinson. She started school at the age of 7 at Clear Creek School in Pine Valley and later attended school at Jimtown. She had to walk 1Þ miles to school.

After her schooling, she married Claude Krigbaum. They had three children: Carmen, JoAnn and Phil. They later divorced.

During the time that she lived in Pine Valley, she worked as a postmaster at Cornucopia until the mine closed and later for her father keeping books. She then married Al Nocchi and they moved to Salem, where she worked as a psychiatric aide for the State of Oregon.

She and Al had two daughters: Lana and Anita. She retired from her job at Salem in 1969 and moved to Pendleton in Eastern Oregon, where she worked as an aide there. She completely retired in 1974 and moved to Mesa, Wash., to be with her family there.

Mrs. Nocchi was a devout Christian and the Lord and church meant everything to her. She was a member of the First Christian Church. She enjoyed reading the Bible and doing jigsaw puzzles.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Carmen and Daryl Whiteley of Baker City, JoAnn and Herb Hulse of Kennewick, Wash., and Lana and Jim Sloan of Pendleton; son and daughter-in-law, Phil and Mardi Krigbaum of Connel, Wash.; a brother, Don Makinson, of Oxbow; sisters, Marie Columbari of Baker City, and Lela Shelton, of Halfway; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Ve Makinson; and a daughter, Anita Nocchi.

‘Jimmy' Lee

George "Jimmy" Lee, 89, a longtime Baker City resident, died June 10, 2002, at Meadowbrook Place, of natural causes.

There will be a celebration of life service at 3 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church, 1995 Fourth St. Pastor Susan Barnes will officiate. Nursery service will be provided at the church.

Jimmy was born Jan. 27, 1913, at the family home at North Powder. He met and married Eileen Cochrane in 1938. They lived their 63 years of married life in the Baker area and raised three daughters.

Jimmy served in the shipyard at Bremerton, Wash., during World War II until lung ailments necessitated three months recovery time in the mountains at Anthony Lake.

For a number of years, they lived at North Powder where Jim owned and operated a grocery store/meat locker plant. North Powder was a terrific place to live, according to the Lees.

In about 1954, they moved to Baker City and for the rest of Jim's working years, he sold cameras and small appliances at Levinger Rexall Drugs. Many folks remember him behind the camera counter. He retired from Levinger's in 1977.

Jim was a member of a number of community organizations: Masonic Lodge No. 47, AF&AM;, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and was a 32-degree member; Al Kader Shrine Temple; life member of Baker Elks Lodge., No. 338; Lions Club; and the Chamber of Commerce. Jim was active in the Presbyterian Church serving on many boards and committees over the years.

His avocation and great love was music. He had a lovely tenor voice. From the time he was a young boy, Jim sang for friends' weddings, anniversaries and funerals. He sang in choirs when in school from high school at Powder Valley until college at Eastern Oregon Normal School. Jim sang in the Presbyterian Church Choir for many years. Most recently he loved the sing-a-longs at Meadowbrook.

Survivors are his wife of 63 years, Eileen; daughters and sons-in-law, Luanne Lee and Cliff Weeks of Brookings, Patricia and Tom Hunt of Ketchikan, Alaska, and Marilyn and Steve Carnine of Portland; grandchildren, Brooke and Jim and their families; a niece, Carolyn, and a nephew, Brill.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Delbert; and a grandson, Scott.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Building Fund or Pathway Hospice through Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St., Baker City, OR 97184.

‘Betty' Cordell

Elizabeth Bonnie "Betty" Cordell, 83, a former Baker City resident, died June 6, 2002, at the Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital at Elko, Nev., after a long illness.

Her memorial graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Mount Hope Cemetery. Pastor Roger Scovil of the Baker City Christian Church will officiate.

She was born on Dec. 12, 1921, at Isley, Wyo. She was the third child of Charles and Bonnie Harnish. She was raised at Horse Creek, Wyo., and spent most of her adult life in Baker City. She had lived at Elko, Nev., just a short time before her death.

She was a housewife who enjoyed crocheting, fishing, singing, participating in the Kitchen Band, bowling, keeping bowling scores and playing the piano for family and friends.

She married Robert C. Johnston in 1938 and they had four children together. After her husband's death, she married Sammy Cordell in 1974.

She also was preceded in death by her second husband; her parents; three brothers, Chuck, Ivan and Jake; a sister, Ruby Harnish; a son, Robert C. Johnston; and a daughter, Ruby Roy.

Survivors include her four brothers, Ben and Rick Harnish of Wheatland, Wyo, Jim Harnish of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Ray Harnish of Littleton, Colo.; her son, Guy Johnston of Elko, Nev.; her daughter, Betty Lou English of Fairview; three stepchildren, Brian Cordell, Mary Lynn Rucker and Debbie Deenin; 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and many loving friends.

Lorne Hardesty

Lorne Woodburn Hardesty, 67, a Baker City resident, died June 8, 2002, at St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise.

His memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St. Visitation will be until 7 o'clock tonight at the funeral home. Pastor Lennie Spooner of the Church of the Nazarene will officiate.

Lorne was born Dec. 7, 1934, at San Francisco. He was a son of Ernest A. and Juanita M. Thompson Hardesty. He was raised and educated at in Herlong, Calif.

He entered the U.S. Army on March 5, 1957. He was honorably discharged on March 11, 1959. He received commendation as a expert rifleman.

After his time in the service, he went to work for the U.S. Government at McClellan Air Force Base as an aircraft mechanic. He retired from there after 29 years of service.

Lorne and his wife, Janet, had been together since March of 1977. For the first years of their marriage, they lived in the Sacramento area where Lorne worked at the Air Force base.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman and they moved to Oregon for that very reason. They moved to Baker City in 1991 and had lived here since. Lorne loved the area and found great peace and tranquility here.

He and his wife made many wonderful friends since moving to this beautiful area. He enjoyed bowling and was on a league in Baker City. He was also member of the Eagles Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Janet Hardesty of Baker City; his children, Lorna Thomas of Baker City, Karen Kircher of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Rick Hardesty of Reno, Nev., Kathy Saba, Matt Busse, Sheri Busse, Tim Busse and Troy Busse, all of Minnesota; his brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Dixie Hardesty of Baker City; sister, Jacki Hoover of Herlong, Calif.; 14 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Juantia Hardesty.

‘Buzz' Petrucci

Lawrence "Buzz" Petrucci, 56, of Baker City died June 5, 2002, at his home after an illness.

There will be a celebration of his life at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Baker City Christian Church, 2998 Eighth St. Pastor Roger Scovil will officiate. There will be a time of fellowship and sharing after the service at 440 Third Street.

"Buzz" was born on Jan. 7, 1946, at Bridgeport, Conn. He was a son of Larry and Bertha Alice Sherwood Petrucci. He was raised at Southbury, Conn., and received his education there.

He entered the U.S. Army on Dec. 30, 1966, and served as a motor pool mechanic in Germany for two years. After getting out of the service, he returned to Southbury and worked at the Department of Transportation.

After leaving the DOT, he then apprenticed as a plumber, later receiving his journeyman certification. He worked his way to Washington and Oregon, where he met Kathy Warren at Molalla. They were married on Nov. 14, 1981, at Vancouver, Wash. They moved to Baker City in 1982. "Buzz" started his own plumbing business, "Buzz's Plumbing, " in 1985 and continued to work in it until his illness in 2001.

"Buzz" was a avid archery hunter and made his own arrows. He enjoyed people and loved to visit. He was always a happy person who loved being with his family and friends. His interests included hunting, hiking and fishing. He enjoyed making the fishing lures that he used to "catch the big one." He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy Petrucci of Baker City; children, Joshua Petrucci of Denver, Mary Jackson of Baker City, Nathan Petrucci of Camp LeJeune, N.C., and Hunter and Cassie Petrucci, both of Baker City; his mother, Bertha Petrucci of Southbury, Conn.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ronald and Bonnie Brenton of Stratford, Conn., and Gary and Marge Petrucci of Southbury, Conn.; grandchildren, Kelsie and Weston Jackson of Baker City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the "Buzz" Petrucci Trust Fund through Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St., Baker City, OR 97814.

Bob O'Dell

Bob O'Dell, 78, a former Baker City resident, died May 29, 2002, in California.

He was a 1941 Baker High School graduate and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Survivors include his five children and a sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Jay White.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanore; his parents, Thomas and Mary O'Dell; a brother, Raymond O'Dell; and a sister and brother-in-law, Lester and Lorel Hansen.

Helen Carlson

Helen Irene Quinlan Carlson, 75, a former Baker City resident who had lived in the Portland area for more than 40 years, died June 5, 2002.

Her memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 22, at Warner Pacific College, McGuire Auditorium.

Helen was born on Sept. 19, 1926, at Lindsay, Calif., the oldest child of Louis Harry and Vera Lorene Quinlan. She was raised in the middle of an orange grove and graduated from Richmond High School in 1944.

That same year, she moved to Portland to attend Pacific Bible College, which later became Warner Pacific College. There she met and married her husband of 45 years, Frederick M. Carlson. They were married on May 27, 1948, the day before Helen graduated.

They began their family and Helen went on to teach at Warner Pacific College. Because of job changes, the family moved to Powers in 1963, then to Baker City in 1965. They moved to Harper in 1975, to Jordan Valley in 1977, to Maupin in 1978 and in 1979 they returned to the Portland area and settled at Fairview.

They owned and operated "The Little Red Store" there for 17 years and Fred served as mayor. Fred retired in 1993 and died in August of that year.

Helen was diagnosed in 1995 with ovarian cancer. She sold the store that year and retired. She died after a nearly unprecedented seven-year battle with ovarian cancer.

She was a member of the Rockwood Church of God and the Warner Pacific College Torchbearers.

Survivors include her four daughters, Cherrie Conklin of Baker City, Sally Lorenson and Jody Lewis, both of Portland and Peggy Carlson of Athena; 10 grandchildren; and a sister, Maureen Maiden of Junction City.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Torchbearers Scholarship Fund at Warner Pacific College.
