John Edward Hoffman, 82, of Forest Grove, a former Baker County resident, died Oct. 8, 2002, at Forest Grove.
His graveside funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Eagle Valley Cemetery in Richland. The Rev. Gordon Bond will officiate.
Mr. Hoffman was born on June 14, 1920, at Council, Idaho, to George and Jasmine Garrett Hoffman. He was raised at Sparta.
He entered the U.S. Army in 1944 and served in World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
He married Edna Nale on June 25, 1939, at Creswell. They were divorced in 1966.
He married Thelma Shipton on April 17, 1969, at Walla Walla, Wash. Thelma died on April 23, 1997.
Mr. Hoffman lived in various places in Oregon. He lived at Pendleton from 1969 to 1998. During that time he drove logging truck. He also drove produce truck. In 1998, he moved to Halfway. He retired in about 1977.
He moved to Osprey Pointe at McMinnville in 2001 to be near his daughter and then moved to Forest Grove in June of this year.
He was preceded in death by a son, Charles Aber Hoffman, in 1954.
Survivors include sons, Charles Hoffman of Pendleton and Johnny Hoffman of Alaska; daughters, Linda Taylor of Yamhill and Sharon Chase and Frances Harkness, both of Baker City; sisters, Eula Grissom of Baker City and Peggy Haynes of Hermiston; a brother, William Hoffman of Washington; a stepdaughter, Karen Kidder of Portland; stepsons, Bill Shipton of Pendleton, Mike Shipton of Salem, Steve Shipton of Florida and Tim Shipton of Pendleton; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

‘Darcie' Gould
Doris Jo "Darcie" Gould, 57, of Athena, a former Baker City resident, died Oct. 10, 2002, at her home.
Her memorial service was at 2 p.m. today at the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home at Milton-Freewater. The Rec. Jeff Beazley of the Bethel Baptist Church at Milton-Freewater officiated.
Mrs. Gould was born on Dec. 6, 1944, at Glover, Okla., to Elmer S. and Lucille F. Powell Williams. She grew up and attended schools at Glover.
At the age of 17, she moved to Texas. She married Jay E. Gould on Dec 31, 1963, at Hugo, Okla. The couple lived in Texas for 15 years before moving back to Oklahoma where they lived until 1992. They next moved to Baker City and then to Athena in 1998.
Mrs. Gould loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting and painting. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren.
Mrs. Gould expressed her love for the outdoors by painting. Her paintings had won her numerous awards and she donated many of them to communities, businesses and clinics in towns from Oklahoma to Oregon. She was a member of the Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Jay E. Gould of Athena; a daughter, Voncille Sanderst of Baker City; a son, Herschel Gould of Irrigon; three sisters, Shirley Jackson of Baker City, Wilma Jackson of Wright, Okla., and Orgaree Jackson of Glover, Okla.; two brothers, Jimmy Williams of Glover, Okla., and Curtis Williams of Wright City, Okla.; five grandchildren, two great-granddaughters, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, two sons and two granddaughters.

‘Joe' Dethloff
William Joseph "Joe" Dethloff Jr., 57, died Oct. 18, 2002, after a year-long illness with cancer.
Visitations will be until 7 o'clock tonight and on Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Francis de Sales Cathedral, First and Church streets. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the cathedral.
The Most Rev. Thomas J. Connolly and the Revs. Robert C. Irwin and James P. Logan will concelebrate the Mass. The Rev. Mr. James R. Watt will assist. Honor guard will be by the Bishop Leipzig General Assembly, Fourth Degree, Knights of Columbus. Interment will be at the Rock Creek Cemetery.
Born April 5, 1945, at Vanport to William J. and Mary Steward Dethloff, Joe attended school in Portland. He was a 1963 graduate of North Catholic High School.
After three years of college at Portland State University, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He completed four years of active duty having served on the USS Ray and USS Carp as a sonar technician. He was discharged in May of 1970, but continued to serve in the Navy Reserves for an additional 26 years, retiring in 1997 as a senior chief.
Joe went to work for the U.S. Post Office starting as a letter carrier in 1970. He married Arlene Mary Haberman on Aug. 5, 1972, at Portland.
They moved to Rock Creek in 1976 fulfilling his longtime dream to begin farming, in addition to working for the Baker City Post Office. He continued as a letter carrier until being promoted to postmaster at Sumpter. He was transferred to the North Powder Post Office as postmaster in 1993 where he worked until the time of his death.
Joe was an active volunteer in many organizations. He was a former president and treasurer of the Wolf Creek Grange. He was a member and former officer of the North Powder Lions Club. He was a former vice chairman of the Baker County Planning Commission.
As a member of the Knights of Columbus, he was elected to the office of grand knight and was also honored as "Knight of the Year" in 1986 for his dedication and service. He served on the Parish Council for St. Francis de Sales Church where he had been an active member since 1976.
Since 1975 until present, Joe and his wife, Arlene, had been involved in marriage encounter. He was given special recognition at St. Francis for his "Smokin' Joe's Chili Feed, " a fund-raiser for local nonprofit organizations such as the Rachel House. He also attended and participated in various activities at St. Anthony Church at North Powder, distributing food baskets at Thanksgiving and Christmas to people in need.
Joe was a devoted husband and father. He loved his church and he loved Jesus. His faith was the center of his life and he was willing to share it with those around him. Joe is best known for his sense of humor and generous spirit, always making time to acknowledge the people that he encountered throughout his day. He was often found giving a helping hand to someone in need.
He was preceded in death by his father, William J. Dethloff, and grandparents, William E. and Pearl L. Steward.
Besides his many, many friends, Joe is survived by his wife, Arlene; son and daughter-in-law, Marty and Destini Dethloff; daughter and son-in-law, Josie and Chuck Graven; son, David Dethloff; his grandchildren, Kristiana, Sean, Marcus, Abby, and Jodie; his mother, Mary L. Dethloff; sister, Mary G.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Theresa and David Schierman, Carolyn and Mike Cain and Connie and Tim Gassner; brothers and sisters-in-law, Tom and Shary Dethloff and Ron and Chris Dethloff; and 24 beloved nieces and nephews.

Ferriel Prasch
Ferriel Joyce McKinney Prasch, 67, of Modesto, Calif., a former Baker City resident, died Oct. 13, 2002, at Modesto.
Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Gray's West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave. Pastor Dennis Hickman of First Lutheran Church will officiate. Vault interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.
Ferriel was born on Sept. 17, 1935, at Baker City. Her parents were the late Louis and Florence McKinney.
She received her bachelor's of education degree at Portland University in 1958 and taught in Portland-area elementary schools before moving to Moraga, Calif., in 1965.
Ferriel worked for Spring Hill School at Lafayette until 1971 when she moved to Modesto, Calif. She and her husband, Don Prasch, managed the Baskin-Robbins store there for seven years before she decided to be a stay-at-home mom for the next few years.
After her children were grown, the love of teaching and educating children brought her back to work as a second-grade teacher for Modesto City Schools in 1986. She worked at Brett Harte School the majority of those years, until her retirement in June of 2001.
During her spare time, Ferriel enjoyed making wire-wrap jewelry, collecting rocks and gems, traveling, gardening and spending time with her children, grandchildren and friends. She especially loved being a grandmother.
After a brief battle with cancer, Ferriel died at her Modesto home of 30 years, surrounded by her family.
Survivors include her three children, Keoki Schattauer of Kona, Hawaii, and his girlfriend, Toni; Marie Brady of Oakland, Calif., and her husband, David, and Richard Prasch of Boise and his wife, Marcia; her aunt, Pauline Perfetti of Columbus, Ohio; cousins, Lucille Marcelli of Ontario, Louise Mack of Palm Desert, Calif., and Mary Stahl of Anaheim, Calif.; and five beloved grandchildren, Daniel, Corey, Evan, Nolan and Gavin.

Maybelle Laursen
Maybelle Laursen, 78, a resident of Deer Creek Road near Sumpter, died Oct. 18, 2002, at her home.
At her request there will be no service. Disposition was by cremation.
Mrs. Laursen was born at Seattle, Wash., on Aug. 8, 1924, a daughter of Albert Alexander and Sarah Durie Sheret. She was raised and educated at Milwaukie.
She started her career as a telephone operator in British Columbia and returned to the United States working for Pacific Northwest Bell as a long-distance operator. She met and married Otto Laursen in 1953 at Portland. They were married 46 years before his death in 1999.
She worked for Pacific Northwest Bell for 29 years before retiring. She moved to Sumpter in 1999 to live with her daughter.
She loved to travel around the world and was a member of the Daughters of Scotia, Oregon Telephone Pioneers and volunteered for the Oregon Public Broadcasting tele-a-thons.
Survivors include her children, Andrea Jasper of Camas, Wash., Sandra Chase of Sumpter and Gary Banzer of Sumpter; grandchildren, James Aaron, Jason, and Krista Chase, Megan and Braden Jasper and Jeri Casanova; and a great-grandchild, Alexis Casanova.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one granddaughter.

‘Everett' Zimmerman
Charles "Everett" Zimmerman, 90, of Baker City, died Oct. 18, 2002, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.
His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Gray's West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave. Pastor Ted Davis of The Faith Center at La Grande and Pastor Aaron Oglesbee of the Agape Christian Center at Baker City will officiate. Charlene Whitmore of Blue Mountain Foursquare Church will assist.
Vault interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. There will be a reception afterward at the First Church of the Nazarene Fellowship Hall, 1250 Hughes Lane.
Mr. Zimmerman was born on Jan. 16, 1912, at Baker City to Robert Oscar Zimmerman and Frances Alene Truscott Zimmerman. He was educated in Baker City.
He married Sylva Michael on Oct. 22, 1941, at Virginia City, Nev. His funeral will be on the day of their 61st wedding anniversary.
Early in his life, Mr. Zimmerman followed heavy construction, which he dearly loved. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps special services during World War II. He was a staff sergeant and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal.
Upon return from the military, he pursued a career with Safeway Stores Inc., starting at Coos Bay. Later he was promoted to manager at Hermiston and then at Baker City where he served until retirement.
After retirement, he and his wife lived on the family ranch and raised registered Angus cattle. After the sale of the family ranch, he involved himself with church activities. He also served on the Baker School District Budget Board and for 10 years on the Senior Center Advisory Board. He was chairman of Senior Council for two years.
While ranching, he rode horses and worked cattle with great pleasure. He was a cowboy at heart. Also an avid sportsman, he rarely missed the opening day of deer and elk season.
He loved the outdoors and was proud of his raspberry plants produced from his garden. He enjoyed sharing them with friends and neighbors.
He was a born-again Christian and is now home with the Lord, his family said. His greatest desire was to have all those he knew and loved to know Jesus.
Survivors include his wife, Sylva; his son, Charles of Phoenix; daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Michael Canifax of Portland; three grandsons and their wives, Michael and Tiffany Canifax, Mark and Melanie Canifax of Portland and Matthew and Cheri Zimmerman of Atlanta; great-grandchildren, Kyle, McKenzie, Jake, Mikayla, Madison and Rylie Canifax; a sister-in-law and her husband, Frances and Len Oldland; a nephew and his wife, Jim and Susan Oldland; and cousins, Edith Morin, Glenabell and Bink Lewis, Marjorie Williams, Paul Spence and Truscott Irby.

Homer Hurt
Homer C. Hurt, 87, a longtime resident of Baker City and Richland, died Oct. 9, 2002, at Physician's Hospital at Reno, Nev.
His ashes were buried with his wife, Ruth, Saturday at Mount Hope Cemetery.
Mr. Hurt was born on May 22, 1915, at Chatsworth, Ill.
Survivors include his son, David Hurt of Sparks, Nev.; eight grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, of Baker City; and a daughter, Marilyn "Joy" Stover of Decatur, Ala.
Debra Faye Goss
Debra Faye Goss, 47, of La Grande, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Walla Walla, Wash.
Her funeral was at 1 p.m. Thursday at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in La Grande, 1002 L Ave. The Rev. Hank Albrecht officiated.
Committal and interment was at the Summerville Cemetery.
Visitations were Wednesday until 7 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 Seventh St., in La Grande.
Deb was born June 18, 1955, to Harvey C. Bud and Ruthella "Ruthie" Phelps Crim in Baker. She attended schools in Baker until the family moved to La Grande. She graduated from La Grande High School with the class of 1973.
On Aug. 2, 1975, she married Milo Goss at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in La Grande. Together they owned and operated B&K; Auto Salvage.
Deb enjoyed spending time with her family and dearly loved their cabin. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed gardening and hunting.
She was a member of the La Grande Country Club where she served on the Ladies Board for several years. She was in charge of the Junior Golf Program for several years and was instrumental in bringing the High School Golf Program to its current level of operation. She was also a member of The Nature Conservancy.
Survivors include her husband, Milo Goss of La Grande; son and daughter-in-law, M.J. and Becky Goss of Boise; parents, Bud and Ruthie Crim of Baker City; sister and brother-in-law, LouAnn and Phil Charbonnier of Taylorsville, Calif.; brother and sister-in-law, Clay and Theresa Crim of Neenah, Wis.; father-in-law, Bill Goss of La Grande; brother-in-law and his wife, Mark and Cally Goss of La Grande; sisters-in-law and their husbands, Suzie and Lantz Hughes of La Grande and Garnet Caleli of Boston; and other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Donna Goss.

Elvera McQuain
Elvera I. McQuain, 73, of Hermiston, a former Baker City resident, died Oct. 7, 2002, at Grande Ronde Hospital in La Grande.
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel at Burns Mortuary of Hermiston.
She was born on Dec. 18, 1928, at Cody, Wyo., to Archie and Myrtle Achenbach Sawyer. She attended grade school at Laramie, Wyo., then moved with her family to Baker City, where she graduated from high school. She attended the University of Wyoming at Laramie.
On Jan. 8, 1956, she married Martie McQuain II at Laramie, Wyo. The couple lived in Wyoming and California before moving to Oregon in 1968.
They lived at Olex and then at Condon before later divorcing. Mrs. McQuain returned to Wyoming where she lived for several years before moving to Hermiston in 1989.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Kim and Jack Carnine of Boardman, Georgia and Rod McKee of La Grande, Sheila and Ken Norris of Gillette, Wyo., and Sherrie and Matt Loomis of Caldwell, Idaho; a son and daughter-in-law, Martie III and Staci McQuain of Echo; 13 grandchildren; sisters, Beverly Reese of Laramie, Charlotte West of Glendale, Ariz., Annette Rice of Hillsboro and Vickie Shepherd of Sheridan, Wyo.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, George Sawyer and Thomas Sawyer.
