Shirley Lavonne Hunter
HUNTER, Shirley Lavonne - Age 76, of Roseburg, passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2000 at her residence. She was born on February 19, 1924 at Ely, Minnesota to Elden Emery and Hilda (NeeMann) Ellefsen. Mrs. Hunter had lived in California for many years. She worked as an Operator Service Supervisor for General Telephone Co. in Downey, CA. Shirley retired in 1986 after 35 years with the Phone Company and moved to the Roseburg/Glide area. She was a member of the Glide Senior Center where she was a greeter and treasurer in 1996-97. She enjoyed needlework, crocheting, kittens, animals, and weekend phone calls with her family cousins, her children and her sister. She is survived by three daughters: Sarah Rose Negley of Roseburg, Eleanor Vermalyea and her husband Scott of Big Bend, CA, Roberta Stedfield of Reno, Nevada, a sister Eleanor Grice of Salt Lake City, Utah, two aunts: Eleanor Curry of Del Ray, Florida, and Adelyn Gieseje of New OIm, Minnesota, cousins: Mr & Mrs. James Heymann of Indio, California, and Deloris Cox of Morgan Hill, California, numerous nieces and nephews. A sister, Marian Carathers who died in 1997, preceded her in death. An informal gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2000 at the Glide Community Center between 12 Noon and 2:00 P.M. At the family's request contributions may be made to the Shirley Hunter Memorial Fund, 5565 S. Scarsdale Cr., Reno, NV, 89502. Private cremation rites have been held. Marjorie Ruth Stevenson
STEVENSON, Marjorie Ruth - Loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away on Tuesday, December 12, 2000 at the age of 84 at a local hospital in Roseburg. She was born in Ridgway, CO. on August 11, 1916 to William Herbert and Etta May (Miller) Sibold. She traveled west by covered wagon to Washington at the age of three with her father, mother, brother and three sisters. In the early 1920's, the family homesteaded land now known as Sibold Canyon in Tenmile, OR. There in a peaceful valley surrounded by beautifully timbered mountains she grew up and lived in a log home hand hewn from nearby trees. Ruth is survived by her devoted husband, Richard J.D. Stevenson, whom she married on May 24, 1935; son Richard C. Stevenson and his wife Marla; son Timothy Stevenson; sister Vera Doss; grandchildren Kennette Stevenson-Baker and Billie Ruth Stevenson-Raymond; great grandchildren Trent, Tyson, Taylor, Katie, Mindie and Cody; numerous nieces, nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her beloved son Jack D. Stevenson in 1976, infant son William Guy Stevenson in 1958, brother Frank Sibold; two sisters Ann Lockwood and Mildred Philpott. Memorial services will be held on Monday, December 18, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 1771 W. Harvard Blvd, Roseburg, OR. Dr. Robert Flaherty, Pastor, will officiate. Private interment will be in Roseburg Memorial Gardens. At the family's request, in lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Mrs. Stevenson's memory to Shriners Hospital for Children, 3101 S.W. TANKERSLEY, O. Louise - Quietly passed away on December 6, 2000 in a Roseburg hospital. She was born in Lynn County, Missouri on September 20, 1927 but grew up in Denver, Colorado. There she met her future husband Bill, during World War II. She worked as a telephone operator, Title Company Escrow Officer, and retired from the Curry County Clerks Office in 1985. She was active in Eastern Star and Rainbow Girls for several years while living in Myrtle Point, Oregon. Her husband Bill Tankersley of Roseburg; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and John Shields of Gold Beach, grandson Fritz Kaiser of Winston, Oregon and Lee Kaiser living in Kansas survive her. A sister and three brothers live in Washington State. At her request, there will be no services. MOUNTAIN VIEW MEMORIAL CHAPEL & FUNERAL ALTERNATIVES CREMATORY is assisting the family.
Lillian Katherine Warmack
Warmack, Lillian Katherine - Age 90, of Winston, passed away peacefully at her home, on Thursday, December 14, 2000, surrounded by loved ones. She was born July 30, 1910 in Adams, Tennessee, daughter of John and Mary Ella (Unger) Taylor. She had lived in Kentucky and Illinois and was united in marriage to St. Elmo Warmack on November 11, 1938 in St. Louis, Missouri. They moved to Oregon in 1954, settling in Winston. Lillian enjoyed working in her yard, canning tomatoes and bright colors. She especially loved to read, often into all hours of the night. She had attended the Winston Assembly Of God Church. She is survived by a son, Jimmy D. Ruffin & his wife Jean of Granite City, IL. Daughters, Betty Parmley & her husband Ray of Granite City, IL and Carol E. Huey & her husband Mike of Bonner, MT. Sons Robert W. Warmack & his wife Trudy of Tenmile and William H. Warmack & his wife Twyla of Winston. Daughters Mary Lou Ledbetter & her husband James Wayne "Sam" of Winston and Linda Steen of Grants Pass, OR. A brother, Harold Taylor and his wife Joyce of Grand Prairie, TX and a sister Helen Bennett of CA. Thirty grandchildren and forty great-grandchildren. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews as well of the rest of the community who called her grandma. She was preceded in death by her husband, St. Elmo, who passed away on May 9, 1971, two daughters, Virginia L. Alhvers and Juanita LaVerne House. She was also was preceded by two sisters and a brother. A potluck for her friends and family will start at 12:00 P.M. noon on Monday, December 18, 2000 at the Winston Assembly of God Church, located at 360 Darrell Street. The funeral will follow at 2:00 P.M. at the church, with Pastor Les Greaser officiating. Private interment will be at the Civil Bend Cemetery. Friends may pay their respects Sunday (tonight) evening from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Taylor's Family Chapel in Winston. Loretta Dora (Albright) Stanley Webb
WEBB, Loretta Dora (Albright) Stanley - Passed away on December 12, 2000, in Sacred Heart hospital, Eugene, OR, of heart complications. She was born November 19, 1913, in Princeton, Minnesota, to Otto and Flossie (Ellenbaum) Albrecht (Albright). She had two brothers and one sister, whom have all preceded her in death. She lived in Minnesota for 33 years where she married Henry B. Stanley in 1931. They moved to Bly, OR in 1946. They later divorced and he preceded her in death on January 7, 1998. She lived in Canyonville, OR area for many years. She married Adele M. Webb on January 25, 1968 in Reno, Nevada. They lived in the Klamath Falls, OR area for many years and retired in the Veneta, OR area. Mom loved to cook and she was great at it! She loved to crochet, knit, paint, quilt, and made the most beautiful pine needle baskets!! She was always keeping busy doing her hobbies or helping others. She volunteered at the Veneta Senior Center and loved going there to enjoy the company of all who came. She traveled with her friend Dorothy and her family when she could. She is survived by her husband of 31 years, A.M. Webb of Veneta, OR; son Robert Stanley and wife Ardith of Eugene, OR; daughters Shirley Austin of Eugene, OR, Carol Epping and husband Donald of Long Beach, WA, and Terrie Broxson of Roseburg, OR, and daughter-in-law Renee Stanley of Canyonville, OR. She has 26 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her two sons, Gordon Stanley of Canyonville, OR in April 1, 1999, and Kenneth Stanley of Portland, OR, on August 6, 1994. We love you and will miss you always!! Love from all your family!! Memorial services will be held on Sunday, December 17, 2000, at 12:30 PM at The Chapel of Memories on W. 11th St. in Eugene, OR. Viewing will be held at the same location on Saturday, December 16, 2000 from 12 noon to 5 PM. Cremation will be done after the service and those who wish to make a donation in Loretta's name may donate to the American Diabetes Association in memory of her son Kenneth.
Orville Lee Blake
BLAKE, Orville Lee - Age 97 of Roseburg, OR passed away on Wednesday, December 13, 2000 at Mercy Hospital. He was born December 4, 1903 in Halstead, Kansas. Husband of the late Beulah Blake, married 63 years and a resident of Roseburg since 1951. In 1951, Orville and Beulah built a lovely home on the South Umpqua River in the N.W. part of Roseburg. Orville worked for the Railroad in the Round House until it was closed down. He was then employed by old Mercy Hospital as manager of the laundry for 15 years. After his retirement, he worked for Flegel Transfer Co., also did painting of houses and some commercial painting. Orville liked keeping busy. At age 94, he was still splitting his own firewood. He was a very active member in the Moose Lodge for over 50 years. Orville was an avid fisherman and hunter in the company of his longtime friends Eugene Merk and George Forrest. He will be missed by all his neighbors and friends in the Charter Oaks area and many friends throughout Douglas County. Orville was an only child. Beulan and Orville had no children. He is survived by sister-in-law Ruby Gentry Bell, brother-in-law Charles Gentry and niece Darlene Kelly, all of San Marcos, Ca., cousin Barbara Bendever of Denver, Colo. and numerous beloved friends. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 21, 2000 at Vine Street Baptist Church 2152 N.E. Vine St. with Rev. Jared Jenkins officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice. Placement of his cremated remains will be in Coles cemetery Roseburg, OR. Oliver C. Booth
BOOTH, Oliver C. - Age 76, a resident of Camas Valley passed away December 16, 2000. He was born June 30, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois to parents Ernest & Edith Marie (Johnson) Booth. The Booth family moved to this area in 1948 from St. John, Indiana. Oliver served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Mr. Booth worked in the maintenance department at Douglas Community Hospital for 14 years until his retirement. He was awarded hospital employee of the year. He was very proud of his employee of the year parking space, which had his name on it. Oliver loved to collect electric trains and postage stamps. Survivors include: Sister Jean Mann Niece Jean Campbell Nephew Richard Winchell all of Camas Valley, Oregon His parents and a sister Mildred Winchell preceded him in death. Memorial services will be held Thursday, December 21, 2000 at 3:00 P.M. at the Camas Valley Christian Fellowship with Pastor Travis Hunt officiating. Margie Mary (Gilman) Cook
COOK, Margie Mary (Gilman) - Passed away on December 15, 2000. Margie was born on March 27, 1913 in Missoula, Montana to Edna Jeanette Kay and Albert W. Gilman. On August 11, 1934 in Boulder, Colorado she married Ivan Guilbert Cook. Margie is survived by a brother Edward Thomas Gilman, two sisters, Dorothy Ador Gilman Crawford and Bernice Melvina Gilman Dwire, two children, Janette Adel Cook Quesnoy, Guilbert Ivan Cook, ten grandchildren, and many great grandchildren. Margie was preceded in death by her husband in 1972 and her youngest daughter Rose Mary Cook in 1998. Services will be held at Chapel of the Roses Funeral Home in Roseburg on Thursday, December 21, 2000 with viewing at 1:00 p.m. and services at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Danny Harrod of Drain Church of Christ officiating.

LYONS, Marian Della - Age 67 of Roseburg passed away Saturday, December 16, 2000 at a local foster care home. She was born March 5, 1933 in Liberty Minnesota, daughter of Martin and Nellie (Chase) Swenson. Marian was one of 14 children. On March 3, 1971 in Carson City, Nevada she married James S. Lyons. Marian lived in the Roseburg area for 48 years. She was an active member of the Women of the Moose, Roseburg Chapter, since 1965. She held the office of Chaplain, Junior Regent, Senior Regent of the Chapter and Junior Graduate Regent. She earned her Acadamey of Friendship Degree May 4, 1969 and her college of Regents Degree June 8, 1991. Marian is survived by her daughters: Cindy Williams and husband Gary of Salem, Oregon, Sandy Trujillo and her husband Bernard of Ocalla, Florida, Pam Sullivan of St. Petersburg, Florida, step-children: Karen Swayge of Silverton, Oregon and Tim Lyons of Canyonville, Oregon, many grandchildren, a great grandchild, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband James, who passed away July 26, 1984. A memorial service will be held, Thursday, December 21, 2000 at 10:30 a.m. at the Moose Lodge, 3031 W. Harvard, Roseburg, Oregon. Private cremation rites were held under the care of Chapel of the Roses Crematory. Sheirls, William Franklin
SHEIRLS, William Franklin "Bud" - 80 of Days Creek, passed away December 15, 2000 at a local care center after a long term illness. Bud was born February 28, 1920 near Jay, Oklahoma to Lee and Maude (Darnell) Sheirls. Bud's mother died in 1924. At a young age he learned to be self sufficient and a hard worker. His father taught him black smithing. He took pride in helping care for his family, survivors of the Depression Era. At 17, Bud went into the 3C Camps for two terms, then into the Army Corp of Engineers for four years, serving in Alaska, helping build air strips on the Aleutian Island. On March 21, 1946 in Oklahoma he married Virginia May Henderson. Bud worked in oil fields, moving place to place with his family. In 1960 Bud moved to Oregon, where he found work in the lumber mills. His family followed him to Oregon soon after. After raising their family, Bud and Virginia divorced in 1972. Bud retired from the Oregon Water Company in Roseburg. Retirement afforded him the opportunity to do what he loved most - to enjoy the "great outdoors", hunting, fishing, and camping with his grandchildren tagging along. On December 28, 1985 in Days Creek, OR Bud married Millie Brock. They have enjoyed 15 wonderful years together. Bud was preceded in death by his parents, twin sisters Martha Giles and Mary Sheirls, sister Anna Henson, adopted parents Gus and Theresa Jantzen, step-brothers Veldon and Ronald Jantzen, and the mother of his children Virginia May Sheirls. He is survived by his wife, Millie Sheirls, three children, Marka Regina and Allen Schmidt of Days Creek, Sylvia Lou and David Howell of Glide, and Larry Junior and Karen Sheirls of Winston, step son Jeff Brock of CA, twin sisters Lavaun and Clyde Mitchell of Skiatook, OK, and Lavern and Roy Burgess of Palm Springs, CA, sister Merea Egan of Visalia, CA, grandchildren, Colleen and John Baker, Melissa and Van Sun, Michael Schmidt, Angela and Thomas Meixner, Daniel Schmidt, Cassandra and Devon Pereira, Trista Howell, Larry Jacob and Trena Sheirls, William and Miranda Sheirls, Step Grandchildren Jennifer Bedwell, Noah Bedwell, David Bedwell, and Adam DeWater, Great Grandchildren, Ivory Rose and Matthew Meixner, Aiyana and Keavo Howell, Alexander Comstock, Rylan and Taylor Sheirls, and many nieces and nephews. His life long friends, and friends he made along the way, and his "family" - the doctors and caregivers at the VA Hospital. We all love him and will miss him so very much. Leland Raymond Stinnett
STINNETT, Raymond Leland - 71, passed away of natural causes on Saturday, December 16, 2000, at his home in Ontario, Oregon. Born October 14, 1929 to Harrison and Myrtle Stinnett, Ray grew up in Illinois and Missouri. He was a Korean War combat veteran and a member of the Army's 2nd Division, 38th Infantry during 1950-51, and a recipient of the Purple Heart. After the war, Ray married Marilyn Eck and together they raised a family in Sutherlin, Oregon, where Ray worked as a logger, millwright, automobile mechanic, heavy equipment operator and musician. Ray moved to Ontario, Oregon in 1981 and married Connie Fenstemacher in 1985. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and camping. He also loved rock hunting, crabbing on the Oregon Coast and greatly enjoyed traveling and fishing in Alaska. Ray is survived by his wife Connie Stinnett of Ontario, Oregon; sisters Virginia Good of Sutherlin and Peggy Pepiot of Oakland, Oregon; brother Henry Stinnett of Springfield, Oregon; former wife Marilyn Stinnett of Sutherlin; daughters Kathleen Pierce of Sutherlin, Oregon and Margaret Solem; sons Bill Wingo of Eureka, California, Steve Stinnett of North Bend, Washington and Mike Stinnett of Denton, Texas. Ray is also survived by his 10 grandchildren, Trisha, John, Jessica, Casey, Caleb, Jack, Kevin, Harrison, William & Bradley and by dozens of nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. Preceded in death by daughter Barbara Stinnett in 1996, by sister Ermadean Stinnett, brothers Utah and Bill Stinnett and by parents Harrison and Myrtle Stinnett. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 20, 2000 at 2:00 PM at Sutherlin Family Church Sanctuary with Pastor Paul Glazner. Burial services will follow at Fair Oaks Cemetery. CHAPEL OF THE FIRS in Sutherlin will coordinate the services.
Lee Ella Cosby
COSBY, Lee Ella Mae - Age 86, passed away on Tuesday, December 19, 2000 in Camas Valley. She was born February 17, 1914 in Woodland, California, daughter of Frank and Lenora Goodin. She was raised and educated in Woodland, Yuba City and Marysville area. She was united in marriage to Richard Cosby on January 14, 1939. During W.W.II, Lee Ella went to work at Lockheed Corp, helping our country's war effort, making airplanes, while Richard served in the U.S. Army. After the war, they returned to California. They moved to Oregon in 1969 and settled in Lookingglass. Richard and Lee Ella were foster parents for many years. Lee Ella was a former 4-H leader and was a volunteer at the Tri-City Senior Center. She also enjoyed sewing and craftwork, including ceramics. She was Christian and was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Canyonville. She is survived by; A daughter, Bonnie Dancer & her husband Pete of Camas Valley, OR. A son, David Cosby & his wife Terrie of Grants Pass,OR. A brother, Frank Goodin & his wife Norma of Red Bluff, CA. Nine grandchildren, Pete Jr. & his wife Shelly, Scott & his wife Rebecca, Eric, Julie, Dustin, Lisa, Colton, Jesse and Eric. Four grandchildren, Ryan, Bradley, Trenton and Jasmine. Also numerous nieces and nephews. Her husband, Richard, two sisters, Violet Benedict and Nellie Harrison and two brothers, Greg and Donald Goodin preceded her in death. Memorial services will be conducted at the First Baptist Church in Canyonville on Saturday, December 23, 2000 at 1:00 P.M. Officiating will be Pastor Dale Beeman. Private family interment will be at the Lookingglass Cemetery. Memorials in Lee Ella name can be made to the Canyonville First Baptist Church. Geraldine H. Lee
LEE, Geraldine H. - Age 84, of Roseburg, passed away on Sunday, December 17, 2000 in a local hospital. She was born on March 26, 1916 at Bowling Green, Ohio to Harry S. and Mabel (Bushong) Hostetler. She attended Bowling Green College graduating in 1936. Following graduation she began teaching school in Mansfield, Ohio. On June 25, 1939 in Hugoton, Kansas she married Robert Eugene Lee, who preceded in death on June 12, 1990. Following the war Geraldine, Bob and their two daughters moved to California. Geraldine taught school there and Sutherlin, Oregon before retiring with over thirty years of teaching the first grade. Following her retirement she opened the Blue Unicorn Gift Shop in Sutherlin and took up bowling. She ws commissioned to write a History of Sutherlin, Oregon by the C. Giles Hunt Memorial Library of Sutherlin. Geraldine and Bob celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1989. Geraldine has completed one Biblical novel (unpublished) and was working on another at the time of her death. She writes under the name G.H. Lee. Geraldine also enjoyed crocheting. She is survived by her daughter, Jeri Jean, four grandchildren: Rob, Ran, Russ, an d Dinah, five great grandchildren with two more expected in the Spring, and a sister Norma Hopkins. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Dinah Anne, who died on May 6, 1963. A memorial gathering of family and friends will be held on Friday, December 22, 2000 at 2:00 P.M. at the Garden Valley Retirement Center, 2nd floor, 1800 N.W. Hughwood, Roseburg. Pastor Lorin W. Myers will officiate. Private interment will be in Roseburg Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to either youth education or Christian work. Raymond "Mike" Stephenson
STEPHENSON, Raymond "Mike" - Passed away on December 19, 2000 at a local nursing home. Mike was born on March 28, 1911 and grew up in Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII, then made his home in Iowa and California before retiring to Roseburg 25 years ago. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mildred; two sisters, Sylvia Marsh and Florence Kusian; a brother, Maynard and his wife Bertha, a son, Terry of Myrtle Creek; a daughter, Dianne Holborow and husband Bill of Roseburg; two grandsons, Daniel Holborow, and Chris Holborow and wife Kory of Roseburg; and two great granddaughters, Madison and Sydney Holborow. Private services for the family are being arranged by Chapel of the Roses Funeral Home. Harold R. (Curley) Reynolds
REYNOLDS, Harold R. (Curley) - Passed away November 19, 2000 of cancer at the age of 88 in Portland, where a private service was held. Curley was born in Brownsville, April 5, 1912 and moved to Portland in the early 30's. He and Georgia Peachey were married in December 1934. They bought and operated the Sycamore Motel on SE Stephens St. in 1945 until their retirement in 1973. During those years Curley was one of principal organizers of the Buckaroos Square Dance barn in Winchester, where he was also a caller of the dances. In the 1950's Curley was the Master of the Masonic Lodge in Roseburg- the youngest Master in Oregon. After retiring they spent their winters in Mesa, AZ, and summers in Roseburg. Georgia passed away in Mesa in 1981 after 47 years of marriage and is interred in Roseburg. He married Beth Stricklett in 1984 and continued his golfing in Mesa and summers in Portland. Survivors included his stepson Jack Peachey and his wife Ann, his three granddaughters, eight great grandchildren and ten great-great-grandchildren, his wife Beth and two step children, Mel Stricklett, Karen Parker and five step grand children. Disposition was by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to a Masonic Lodge. Arrangements were made by ZELLER CHAPEL OF THE ROSES in Portland.
Yula C. Snyder
Snyder, Yula Catherine - Age 84, of Winston, passed away on Saturday, December 23, 2000 at a local hospital. She was born October 30, 1916 in Westville, Illinois, daughter of Charles and Orea (Cox) Lovell. She was raised and educated in Illinois. She was united in marriage to George Snyder on December 11, 1936 in Brazil, Illinois. They moved to Oregon in 1960, and settled in Winston in 1980. Yula was a mother who enjoyed making a home for her family. She was a member of the Church Of Jesus Christ, Latter-day Saints. She is survived by her husband of over sixty-four years, George Snyder of Winston. Two daughters, Ruby L Pifher of Dillard, Ruth L. Pifher & her husband Robert of Winston. Six sons, Raymond L. Snyder and Russell L. Snyder & his wife Sue of Winston. Ralph L Snyder of Burns. Roy L. Snyder & his wife Cherry of Roseburg. Ronnie L. Snyder and Robert Snyder & his wife Donna, of Winston. Thirty-three grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and several great great grandchildren. Two brothers preceded her in death. Funeral services will be conducted at the Church of Jesus Christ, Latter-day Saints, Winston Ward, on Wednesday, December 27, 2000 at 11:00 A.M. Interment will follow at the Snyder's Family Cemetery in Winston. Arrangements are under the direction of Taylor's Family Chapel.
Lee A. Haws
HAWS, Lee A. - 83 of Roseburg, passed away Saturday, December 23, 2000 in a local hospital. He was born March 7, 1917 in Highlands, California to Walter & Nellie (Dean) Haws. The family lived in different areas in California as Lee grew up. He worked with Bell Telephone in California for a number of years. Lee moved to Roseburg in 1962 working with US West until his retirement in 1979. His telephone career spanned almost 40 years. On July 18, 1998 in Coos Bay he married Myra Mann. Over the years, Lee was a member of the Moose and Elks Lodge as well as the Telephone Pioneers of America. He loved being outdoors, often hunting & fishing. He was an avid bowler involved in several leagues over the years. In his retirement years, Lee looked forward to winters in the deserts of Arizona. He is survived by his wife- Myra of Roseburg; step daughter and her husband- Jean & Albert Hash of Roseburg; step sons and their wives- Edward & Judy Johnson of Rosemont, MN and Vernon & Sherry Mann of Roseburg; Lee was like a father to - Frank & Leta Borges of Chino, CA; a brother - Leonard Haws of Roseburg; a sister - Ruth Thompson of Whittier, CA; sister-in-law Doris Shepherd of Havasu City, CA; a brother-in-law and his wife- Mervin & Jesse Dage of Roseburg as well as numerous aunts, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, & great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Marge and his first wife Vada. No formal services will be held but a sharing & viewing time is to be held at Wilson's Chapel of the Roses on Friday, December 29, 2000 from 6 until 8 PM. MATHES, Aili Agnes - Age 71, of Sutherlin passed away Sunday December 24, 2000 at her home. She was born August 15, 1929 in Oakland, California to Ludwig and Hulda (Wirtanen) Salo. MICHAEL, Belinda Jean - of Myrtle Creek, Oregon passed away at her brothers home in Roseburg, Oregon on December 25, 2000. She was born in Canyonville, Oregon on November 5, 1959 to Bayless and Betty (Kilgore) Shivers. She is survived by her daughter Nichole Elese of Springfield, Oregon and brothers Bobby Joe Shivers and his wife Cathryn of Roseburg, Oregon, Rickey Shivers and his wife Jamie of Myrtle Creek, Oregon and Charles C. Jones and his wife Judy of Medford, Oregon. She was preceded in death by her father. Visitation will be Thursday, December 28, 2000 at 1:00 p.m. at Long & Shukle Memorial Chapel in Roseburg, Oregon. A chapel service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 28, 2000 at LONG & SHUKLE MEMORIAL CHAPEL.
Edwin C. "Papa" Nolte
NOLTE, Edwin C. - Age 90, died on Christmas Eve 2000 at his home in Mountain View Retirement Residence in Ashland, Oregon. Ed was born March 20, 1910 in Dazey, North Dakota. He was married to Virginia Jane Smith on September 16, 1932 in Nampa, Idaho. Jane preceded him in death on September 13, 1995. Ed was a manager for the Montgomery Wards stores for over 40 years in Missouri, California, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon, including over 20 years in Roseburg, Oregon. They moved to Roseburg in 1944. Ed was a rock hound and spent many years enjoying the North Umpqua River with his family and grandchildren. He was active with the Roseburg Chamber of Commerce, Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge, and President of the Roseburg County Club. He is survived by his three sons, Ed Nolte and his wife Evelyn of Culver, Oregon, Ray Nolte of Palm Desert, California, and Paul Nolte and his wife Jody of Ashland, Oregon, one sister, Fern Nolte Davidson, 3 brothers, John, Glen and Paul Nolte, 2 grandsons, Dan & Doug Nolte, 4 grand daughters, Denise Nolte, Darcy Morley, Whitney Nolte Munn, & Courtney Nolte Carver, and 5 great grandchildren. We would like to thank "Papa" for a long and rich life. At the families request no public services will be held. Julia (Baysa) Turko
TURKO, Julia (Baysa) - Age 86, of Roseburg, passed away on Saturday, December 23, 2000 in a local hospital. Julia was born on July 14, 1914 in Poland to John and Anna (Kurylko) Baysa. Julia managed the family farm and in 1932 she married Peter Turko. Julia spent time in a German jail during WW II and later her family was forced to live on a collective farm in the Ukraine. With the help of neighbors and friends, Julia and her two young daughters escaped the collective farm and returned to Poland. In 1947, they immigrated to Detroit, Michigan to live with Peter, her husband, who had came to America just before the war. A woman of an inordinate amount of courage and compassion, Julia's real battle came when she lost her husband in 1949 and was left to support three children, not knowing the language, and with very few resources. She is survived by a daughter, Anna Slemmer and a son, Peter Turko both of Roseburg, and a son-in-law Jim Williams of Massachusetts, four grandsons: Jonathan Slemmer and his wife Kristi Neufeld of Utah, Michael Williams and his wife Lynn of Texas, Kevin Williams and his wife Donna of North Carolina and Mark Williams also of North Carolina as well as five great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Irene Williams, and a special friend Jack Knight. "Did you tackle that trouble that came your way with a resolute heart and cheerful? Norman "Norm" Newton Blodgett
BLODGETT, Norman "Norm" Newton - Age 74, of Grants Pass, died Saturday, December 23, 2000 at Veterans Administration Healthcare System in Roseburg. He was born on July 5, 1926 in Oakland, California and raised there. Immediately after graduation he went into the U.S. Army and was assigned to Fort Reily, Kansas where he graduated from one of the last mounted cavalry training programs. He was assigned to the First Cavalry Division where he served during the Philippine Campaign and participated in the liberation of Manila. He also served with distinction and honor with the 1st Elements of the Army of Occupation in Japan. After serving in the Korean War, Norm eventually started his own business in Napa, California as a Public Accountant and Licensed Tax Preparer. In 1970 he met and married his wife Sue. Norm retired to Grants Pass in 1978. In addition to his wife Sue Blodgett of Grants Pass; he is survived by his four children, Larry Blodgett and Debby Blodgett, both of Portland; Roxanne Blodgett of Arkansas; and Teri Blodgett of Napa, California; six step-children, Linda Foster and Donna Daugherty, both of Colorado; Trudy Parker and Mehliss Jensen, both of Grants Pass; David Pond of Portland and Don Draper of Seattle, Washington; his brother Gene Blodgett of San Francisco, California; 20 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Services will be at 1:00 P.M., Friday, December 29, 2000 at Hull & Hull Chapel with Pastor Travis Hunt officiating. Interment will follow at Granite Hill Cemetery. Stewart B. Edmunds
EDMUNDS, Stewart B. - 85, of Roseburg, passed away Wednesday, December 27, 2000 in a local care center. He was born February 10, 1915 in Claremont, CA to Bernie & Flossie (Haddox) Edmunds. Stewart grew up and attended school in Los Angles, graduating from Belmont High School in 1933. Shortly after school, he began working with the Southern Pacific Railroad. On April 30, 1947 at Pamona, CA he married Johanna Schlegel. The couple lived in southern California for many years. During the 50's & 60's, he was a scout leader. Following Stewart's retirement in the mid 70's, after over 35 years with Southern Pacific, they moved to Roseburg. Family was first in his life and a close second was puttering in his shop. Stewart was a very active member of the First Conservative Baptist Church and enjoyed traveling. He is survived by his wife of 53 years - Johanna of Roseburg; his daughter & son-in-law- Bonnie & Mike Durick of Roseburg; a brother- Clarence Edmunds of Manning, IA; a sister- Mazella Niles of Arizona; three grandchildren - Jamie, Brian & Marcie Durick as well as several nieces & nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 29, 2000 at 1:00 P.M. in Wilson's Chapel of the Roses. Officiating will be Reverend Roy Keller. Charles "Chuck Gilliland
GILLILAND, Charles "Chuck" - Age 68, of Sutherlin, passed away December 25, 2000 in a Roseburg hospital. He was born June 11, 1932 in Dolores, Colorado to William R. and Pauline I. (Blume) Gilliland. He was married to Joyce Smith in Chico, California on October 20, 1995. He was a veteran of the Koran War serving in the U.S. Navy. Chuck was a very loving and caring man who took very good care of everybody. He was marvelous with children and they loved to gather around and listen to him tell them story's. He made up different story's for them and some they would remember all through their lives. While living in California he did a lot of haying and planted Almond orchards. He liked haying so much he would drive around looking at hay fields. Chuck enjoyed fishing, crabbing, and traveling. His special things were his little dogs and rose gardens. Survivors include his wife, Joyce of Sutherlin; other loving family members include, Russell House and his wife Lisa of Chico, California, Wila Morgan and her husband Ed of Umpqua, Oregon, Lance Liesinger of Sutherlin, Oregon, Gayla Cronauer of College Station, Texas, Tina Mulhall and her husband Pat of Chico, California, Thelma Solhein and her husband Bill of Elk Grove, California and Billie Simonet and her husband Fred of Red Bluff, California; eleven grandchildren and five and three quarters great grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Elaine; two brothers, Willie and Joel Gilliland and a sister Betty Mohler. Memorial services will be held Saturday December 30, 2000 at 1:00 P.M. in the Faith Baptist Church in Sutherlin with Pastor Gary Novak officiating. Private interment will be held in Valley View Cemetery near Sutherlin. Contributions in Chuck's memory may be made to the charity of your choice in lieu of flowers.
