The Austins were the owners of the Fern Florist which Bernice managed for many years plus working on the farm and raising three children. Bernice retired in 1986 and in her own words said, "I am retired and am going to just be lazy". Anyone who knew her would, agree, there was never anything lazy about Bernice. She still had her own large vegetable garden after she was 90 and canned vegetables and fruit for her family. She always took her long daily walk, there was nothing lazy about Bernice, she was always doing something or helping someone. Bernice especially loved children and enjoyed her grandchildren Bruce and Susan. She was a great cook and passed on here cooking skills to her granddaughter, Susan. Every Saturday morning while Susan was growing up, she helped her grandmother make six loaves of cracked wheat bread. Clarence Hahn
HAHN, Clarence - Longtime Reedsport resident and a prominent community citizen Clarence Hahn, Age 87, passed away on February 16, 2001. He had been all with pneumonia for a very short time and passed away restfully with his family at his side. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, February 20, 2001 at the United Presbyterian Church, 2360 Longwood Drive at 1 p.m. There will be a time of fellowship and refreshment in the dining hall following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to a special fund for the Beautification Committee for Hahn Park, in care of Pacific State Bank, P.O. Box 107, Reedsport, OR 97477. Dunes Family Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Clarence was born on December 15, 1913 in Portland, Oregon to Conrad and Elizabeth (Wacker) Hahn. Being the Depression years he only completed the eighth grade and then went to work as a young lad, he helped on the family dairy and then went into the sanitation business with his father and brother. He and Lillian Ludwig were married on October 5, 1935 in Portland and three children were born to them, Dick, Allen and Patty. Clarence had his own sanitation business in Portland until 1950 when the family moved to Reedsport. He owned and operated Hahn's Sanitary Service until his retirement in 1975. He was known as the "garbage man with the big smile". Hahn sold the business to the Horning Brothers in 1975. Clarence was a community citizen. He was named the Lower Umpqua Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year in 1960 and he and Lillian were later given a lifetime membership in the Chamber. He served on the Douglas County Parks Board 1966-1974. He and Lillian were honored in 1961 when the Reedsport City Council voted to change the name of Christmas Tree Park in downtown Reedsport to Hahn Park. William Tugman, then editor of the Umpqua Courier, wrote in an editorial in the paper. You often hear it said the "honors should be bestowed while the honored are still alive to appreciate it". Everybody in the Port Umpqua area will agree that to call the Little Christmas Tree Triangle at the west end of downtown Fir Avenue Hahn's Park is fitting recognition of two very fine citizens - Clarence and Lillian Hahn. Of course the Lions Club has sponsored the development and many men and woman have worked on the park from time to time, but without the Hahns the park would probably be still "a gleam in the eye". Clarence joined the Gardener- Reedsport Lions Club in 1950 and was one of their most active members. He and Lillian hosted many Lion's events at their home on Bowman Road and the family rooms downstairs are filled with Lions Club memorabilia and awards given to the local club and to Clarence personally for his service to Lions. Two very special awards presented to him were the Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation Fellow in 1992 and the Helen Keller Award in 1997 for his outstanding contribution to the Lion's sight programs. Clarence was knighted as a Portland Royal Rosarian in 1966 and was instrumental in bringing the Royal Rosarians to the annual Fleet Days Celebrations where they participated in the parade and other events and each year would plant a new rose in the rose garden in Hahn Park in honor of that year's Fleet Days Queen. The Hahns were honored as Grand Marshals of the Fleet Days-Ocean Festival in 1990. He also was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and many times the Hahn's beautiful flowers have graced the altar at the church. Their work with flowers and the beautification of the Hahn Park and other areas in the community has been enjoyed by many people. Clarence liked to do "fixer-upper" things around the house. He did work in the flowers with Lillian but tinkering was his real love. He also liked to travel and visit with people. Clarence was a wonderful host and the many social times at the Hahn home will be remembered by many. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lillian Hahn of Reedsport; his sons Richard and his wife Pam Hahn of Reedsport and Allen and his wife Bruce Ann Hahn of Alta Loma, CA; his daughter Patty and her husband Tony Severson of Medford, OR; a sister-in-law Evelyn Hahn of Portland, OR; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
