Vera Evans
Evans, Vera Maude Wiley - On a hot summer day in Camas Valley, Oregon on July 1, 1899 a lively baby, Vera Maude Wiley was born to Charles and Jessie May (Estes) Wiley. As a small child, she would run next door, knowing she would get a spanking, to her beloved grandparents whom she adored, John W. Wiley and Harriet Hite Wiley, to listen to the tales of their coming from Illinois to Camas Valley by wagon trains. Her parents homesteaded on Bald Hill mountains and they walked 8 miles to the Camas Valley Schools. They moved to Happy Valley with her Uncle John Wiley and grandfather, and she and younger brother Harlland ran the ferry on the river, until they were caught by a state man when she was eleven, who said they were too young. (Her father had the contract for the ferry.) After moving to east Roseburg, the children all went to the old Benson School and then to Rose School when they moved to So. Stephens St. Vera, at 13, worked and lived for some time for Dr. Brumfield, a dentist, caring for their three children and his wife. When her parents homesteaded up Dole Road, she married Jim DeRoss and cared for the whole ranch and Jim's parents at Green and also worked at Austin's Green House and the Jackson Ranch, while Jim went to World War I. Later she cooked in logging camps in Powers and also learned to be an excellent furrier, working up the coast out of North Bend where she met her second husband, Edward Bahrke with whom she had her only child, a son, Loyal Kay Bahrke. She and Ed were fruit packers from Southern California to Yakima to Pendicton Canada. Many times she drove that route by herself. She was an excellent packer and never lacked work. She and Ed settled in Albany with a wrecking yard and when that union ended she and Loyal moved to Springfield, Oregon, bought an apartment house and she also managed Two Miss America Dress Shops. She was the first Standard Oil lady dealer at Albany, Oregon, but being a woman, she wasn't allowed to pump gasoline into cars! Vera was also the delegate for the World's Fair two different times, by the Business and Professional Womens Club, where she loved being an active member. Leaving Albany for Medford, she was one of the fastest packers for Pinnacle Orchards, and it was in Talent she met the love of her life, Russell evans, whom she married August 8, 1942 in Reno, Nevada. He joined the Army shortly after and Vera was left alone again with her young son. She worked for the highway department living in a small travel trailer she pulled behind her car. She bought old houses and remodeled them, doing most of the work herself and turned them into rooming houses and apartments. She knew her "Russ" was coming home and worked hard at everything to build a nest egg for his return. After four years, Russell came home to his loving wife and son and after several years they settled in the Medford-White City area, buying and remodeling and selling homes. They also had the Standard Oil service station and store in Central Point and later had the Griffin Creek Store and others. Their vegetable gardens and lovely flowers were the envy of all and they shared with all. Even with a bad hip and her little tiny crutch, she would go buy groceries and shop for shut-ins who were by far healthier and younger than she. She was roofing her house at age 78, and was building a small porch at age 82 and fell through the ladder and broke her pelvis and ankle, and never went to a doctor. She always said the pain wasn't anything she couldn't handle. After they moved to Roseburg, her hip was replaced at 88,. and soon out of the recovery room, she felt bad because she couldn't fix everyone a cup of coffee. Uncle Russ had a massive heart attack in 1992, and the second night while staying with her sister, Vera fell at the top of the stairs with her walker, and broke her knee cap. She wouldn't let anyone take her to the hospital until the next day, and eventually she and Russ were in the care center together. She wanted to stay in his room, but because she tried to care for him herself, they had to move her into another room. Their fiftieth wedding anniversary celebration was held at the care center and Russ died soon after. Russ had asked a newly widowed niece, Olive Coon, if she would care for Vera after he was gone. She said yes, and the doctors said Vera would never walk again., and would never leave the Mercy Care Center. But with such loving care, Vera was walking and Olive took her from the care center. At age 93, Vera had a cornea eye transplant at Casey Eye Institute and then Loyal wanted his mother nearer, so she was moved to Tacoma, Washington to Grande Vista Assisted Care Center. This little Pepper Pot charmed and delighted the residents with her stories, all dramatically told. She had a nice man friend and she loved it there. She had a bad bout with pneumonia at age ninety-eight, and was in the hospital and then a nursing home. But she got well enough to go back to Grande Vista, and she was such an inspiration for all the residents because at the age she came back! She celebrated her 100th birthday there. She got ill again at 100 1/2, and didn't get strong enough to go back to Grande Vista, but went to a lovely full time nursing home, Heartwood Extended Health Care. She grew strong and had such excellent care that she was soon walking with her walker. She didn't go in to her wheel chair and wouldn't, except for trips to the dining rooms, until she was 101 1/2. She loved everyone at the nursing home and they loved her, and she did not want to come back to Roseburg, except to visit. Together, she and Olive put over two hundred thousand miles on a little car running up and down I-5 between Tacoma, Casey Eye Institute in Portland, and Roseburg. Loyal and Olive took her at age 97 to the islands of Honolulu and Maui, and she was game for everything. The longest she and Olive have been apart since 1991 has been two weeks and two days. Vera was very proud of her heritage. Her great grandfather and great grandmother were Joel and Patsy Estes, who founded Estes National Park in Colorado in 1849. Her nephew, Don Coon, took Vera and her sister Maple Stobie and her son Doug, to the Estes Family Reunion at Estes park on August 8, 1987. What an experience! Her Aunt Julia Adele Wiley (her father's sister) and her husband were big game exhibition marksmen, hunters and sold firearms and toured with Buffalo Bill and came to Roseburg twice and the family got free tickets! After Aunt Del's husband died, she stayed and toured with Buffalo Bill's Circus and traveled to England with them as an "Annie Oakley". Vera is survived by her loving son, Loyal Kay; five grandchildren, Kimberly Kay Inderbitzen, Stephen Kay Bahrke, Naomi Kay Hart, Tamara Kay Trotter, and Pacer Bahrke; eight great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren and another on the way, all from the Tacoma and Olympia, Washington area. Also she leaves two loving ex daughters-in-law, Corrine Kay Bahrke from Tacoma, and Mickey Lander from Maui, and many nieces and nephews in the Roseburg and Medford areas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell, her parents and five brothers and sisters, Harlland LaRoy Wiley, Ted Charles Wiley, Maple Chalice Stobie, Alberta Belle Coon, and Valma May Negles. She was so loved and will really be missed, but we'll all meet again someday! Services will be held at WILSON'S CHAPEL OF THE ROSES at 2 PM on June 23, followed by interment at the Noah Cemetery in Camas Valley.
