Lawrence Gustave Schultz
SCHULTZ, Lawrence Gustave - Age 63, of Sutherlin, Oregon, passed away May 30, 2001 at home with his family at his side after a short courageous battle with cancer. He was born October 26, 1937 in Big Fork, Minnesota to Gustave and Muriel (Powell) Schultz. Lawrence was a disabled truck driver whose world revolved around the time he spent with his wife, children and grandchildren and was looking forward to the birth of his first two great-grandchildren, that the Lord has given us to help fill the space he has left behind. His wife, children, and grandchildren were his life. He lives on forever through our hearts and will never be forgotten for he is in the eyes of his children and grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Donna of Sutherlin, his five children, Diana and husband, Gary Paddock and their children, Michelle (expecting great-grandchild) Heather (great-grandchild) Maranda Dio, Lillian and husband, Kelly McKinney and their children, Amanda and Joshua, Donna and husband, Kelly LaSure and their children, Brandon, Rebecca and Stephanie, Lora and husband, Mike Pope and their children, Mariah, Aaron, Lawrence Jr. (Sam) and his wife, Michelle Schultz and their children, Michael, Timothy and Elizabeth, brothers, Ralph, Harold, Dan, and sister, Lorie Kruger. He was preceded in death by parents, Muriel and Gustave Schultz, and brother, Arnold Schultz. Graveside services will be held at Lookingglass Cemetery on Tuesday, June 5, 2001 at 3:00 p.m. followed by a potluck at Lookingglass Grange for family and close friends.
David Spoon
SPOON, J. David - Age 79, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on Thursday, May 31, 2001. He was born June 5, 1921 in Fallon, Nevada, son of Charles Carey and Ethel Viola (Lowe) Spoon. He was raised and educated in Fallon. He went to work for Lockheed Aerospace in California. On July 19, 1942 in Reno, Nevada, he was united in marriage to Laveta Sloan, with his bride's father officiating. When WWII broke out, he joined the US Navy. After the war, he completed his degree at University of Nevada-Reno as a Mechanical Engineer. They moved to California and he returned to Lockheed where he was instrumental in the Corona Program. They lived in Burbank, Van Nyes and Sunnyvale. He retired in 1976 as Director of Manufacturing for the Lockheed Space Systems, after thirty years of service to the company. They moved to Roseburg from Saratoga, California in 1997. Dave enjoyed the outdoors, including hunting, fishing and camping, but he especially loved his trips to Alaska. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Los Gatos, California and a member and office holder of S.I.R. (Sons In Retirement). He was also a thirty-year member of the Saratoga Federated Church. In Roseburg, he attended the First Conservative Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of over fifty-eight years, Laveta Spoon of Roseburg, son, Gary David Spoon and his partner, Laurie Prunhuber of Aptos, California, daughter, Karen Lowe of Eugene, Oregon, granddaughter, Debra Braun and her spouse, Gary and their two children, Zachary and Aiden Braun, sister-in-law, Nita Taylor, and nephew, Allan Spoon of Fallon, Nevada. His parents, two sisters and a brother preceded him in death. Friends are invited for a celebration of life to be held at Linus Oaks on Tuesday, June 5, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. Officiating will be Pastor John Treischmann.
Phillis Maude Terry
TERRY, Phillis Maude - 82 years of age, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 31, 2001 in Roseburg, Oregon. She was born Phillis Maude Torrance on March 31, 1919 in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho, the youngest of six children of William and Maude (Wood) Torrance. On February 14, 1948 Phillis married William Charles Terry in Spokane, Washington. In 1961 they moved to Roseburg where they raised their family. She enjoyed working many years as secretary at Douglas County Title Company before her retirement. Phillis loved her family, especially her granddaughter, Clarice. Her family remembers her as kind, thoughtful and considerate to a fault. She always put others and their needs above herself and was accepting of life's trials with unusual grace. Phillis is survived by her children, daughter, Susan and her husband, Jim Burr of Lincoln City, Oregon, and son, Jim and his wife, Teresa Terry of Gresham, Oregon, a granddaughter, Clarice Terry and six nieces. Phillis was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, William Terry, by brother, Max Torrance and sisters, Eva Townsend, Pauline Merrill, Geraldine Cohn and Esther Roundtree. Lillian B. VanVolkenburg
VANVOLKENBURG, Lillian B. - Age 91, of Winchester, Oregon, went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 31, 2001, passing away in a local care center. She was born Saturday, May 21, 1910 in Fayetteville, Arkansas to Walter and Ida (Murphy) Carney. Lillian grew up and attended school in Fayetteville graduating from high school with valedictorian honors. On October 18, 1930 in Jopin, Missouri she married William Ray Van-Volkenburg. The couple moved to Southern California in 1940. Lillian was emplyed with North American Aviation working in pre-fabrication for 20 years until retirement at age 62. She and William found a beautiful property in Winchester and moved here in 1972. Lillian was an inspiration to her family, she showed great dignity when facing death. She had a great inner strength, which she didn't hesitate to display and a giving heart, likened to Dorcas of the Bible. Lillian never held ill-feelings against others and was always ready with a smile. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Roseburg, a member of the Antique Doll Club (often crafting costumes) and was an avid gardener. Lillian is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Lindsey Kimbrough of Sutherlin, Oregon, her son and daughter-in-law, William and Debra VanVolkenburg of Bedford, Texas, sisters, Violet Flagg of Roseburg, Bonnie Niebarger of Downey, California, Jessie Moore of Sunnyside, California, brother, Walter Carney of Tuscany Hills, California, 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, William in 1982, her parents, a daughter, Judith K. Andres and a sister, Leona. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 5, 2001 at 2:30 p.m. in WILSON'S CHAPEL OF THE ROSES. Officiating will be Pastor David Brown of the First Baptist Church. H. Patricia Alspaugh
ALSPAUGH, H. Patricia - age 80, formerly of Roseburg, passed away on Saturday, June 2, 2001, in a Eugene, Oregon nursing home. She was born on Friday, August 6, 1920 at Clatskanie, Oregon to Eddie Willis and Ruth Hilda (Van Buren) Moyer. She graduated from Port Orford High School. On December 22, 1945 at Eureka, California she married Robert Alspaugh, who preceded her in death on November 13, 1977. Pat resided in Roseburg from 1946 until 1995 when her failing health forced her to move to Eugene to be closer to her children. She worked as a seamstress in Roseburg in the late 50's and early 60's. She also worked for Ken's Dry Cleaners from 1980 until 1995. Pat was league bowler for over 30 years she also enjoyed sewing, singing, piano, crossword puzzle and baseball. She was a member of the I.O.O.F., Women of the Moose and St. George's Episcopal Church. She is survived by her children and their families. Judy Reece and husband Larry, Edward Alspaugh and his wife Jodi all of Eugene, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren, a sister Frances Woodworth of North Bend, Oregon and nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by a stillborn son Robert Moyer Alspaugh who died on October 11, 1949. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 8, 2001 at 11:00 AM at Wilson's Chapel of the Roses. Father Sherman Hesselgrave will officiate. Glen J. Birchfield
BIRCHFIELD, Glen J. - died Thursday, May 31, 2001, after a six-year battle with cancer. Glen was born July 14, 1931 to Bill and Agusta Birchfield in Eureka Springs, Arkansas and attended school locally before, enlisting in the U.S. Air Force in 1951. He served in Japan as an airplane mechanic during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1953. He returned to Eureka Springs in 1953 and married Clara Stout. They moved to Roseburg, Oregon in 1954 and Glen began a 44-year career with Roseburg Lumber and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local 2949. Glen spent many years on the log pond at the Dixonville plant and yet, he could not swim a stroke! He was an active member in the Oregon National Guard from 1957 to 1971 and was on duty for several days following the Roseburg blast of 1959. As a platoon sergeant, his platoon received the Eisenhower Trophy, the highest rating awarded a platoon in the National Guard. Glen was the ultimate, "union man"! He served as a shop steward; was elected Assistant Business Agent in 1967; and was elected Business Agent from 1980 to 1988. After serving the union, he returned to the Dixonville Plant, until his retirement. Glen was a respected negotiator by both the union employees, as well as the management of Roseburg Lumber. He served on many community boards, including Douglas Community Hospital. Glen was a charter member of the Winston VFW Post #9745 and was very active in both fund raising and the various building projects at the Post. Glen was an avid hunter, a marksman and fisherman and was known for guarding his secret fishing spots. He always responded, when asked where he caught his latest catch, "In the lip, man, where else?" His pastime, since retirement, was "honey-do's", garage sales, lots of fishing and taking his catch of the day to union retirees and widows. He also occasionally enjoyed a good extra-cold Hamm's (union beer of course) with friends. Glen is survived by his wife, Clara of Roseburg; daughter Shirley and John Houser of Clarkston, WA; daughter Judy and John Thompson of Apache Junction, AZ; son Rick and Sherry Birchfield of Gold Canyon, AZ; sisters Leoma Lintecum and Mary Ann Johnson; brothers Melvin and Pete Birchfield; five grandchildren; nine great-children and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of Glen's life is scheduled at the Winston VFW Local #9745 on Sunday, June 17, 2001, from 2:00 to 5:00 PM. Memorials may be made to Winston VFW Post #9745 or the American Cancer Society.
Laverne M. Chartier
CHARTIER, Laverne M. - 72, of Glide, passed away Saturday, June 2, 2001, in a Roseburg hospital. She was born Saturday, September 15, 1928 in Little Suamico, Wisconsin to Rudolph & Marie (Coopman) Seehawer. Laverne grew up and attended school in Athelstane, WI and graduated from high school in Wausaukee, WI. On January 3, 1948 in Sutherlin, Oregon she married James R. "Nig" Chartier. Laverne worked for 5 years with the Martin Brothers Box Co. in Oakland. In 1968, the couple moved their entire home from Oakland to Glide and took up residence there. The focus of Laverne's life was as a devoted mother, raising her family and looking forward to the holidays especially Christmas. In her quiet times, she enjoyed reading or working with her hands, crocheting, knitting or needlepoint. Laverne is survived by her husband of 53 years James "Nig" Chartier; her children Jerry and Cindy Chartier of Roseburg and Jim and Diane Chartier of Bend; grandchildren Mike and wife, Jamie, Jill Chartier-Butler and husband, Mike, Brian and Nikki; great grandchildren Erin and Jamie; sisters and their spouses, Shirley and Norman Mann of Winchester, Mildred and Bob Murray of Roseburg, and Marlyn Seehawer of Winchester; brothers and their spouses, Lyle and Helen Seehawer of Sutherlin, James and Cindy Seehawer of Wilbur, and Carl and Judy Seehawer of Roseburg; sisters-in-law Erma Seehawer of Roseburg, and Phyllis Seehawer of Sutherlin; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Robert "Bing" and Dean Seehawer. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 7, 2001 at 1:00 P.M. in WILSON'S CHAPEL OF THE ROSES. Lynn W. Davenport
DAVENPORT, Lynn W. - Age 77, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away suddenly June 1, 2001, at Reedsport, Oregon. He was born in Richland, Missouri July 11, 1923 to William and Rosetta Davenport. Lynn grew up and received his education in Richland. On January 17, 1943 he was united in marriage to his loving wife Alene and spent 58 wonderful years together. Three weeks after their marriage Lynn was called to serve his country in the U.S. Army in World War II. He was in 538th Qm. Battalion- 6th Engineers Special Brigade. His company participated in the invasion of Omaha Beach and were on the shores of Normandy, France on "D" Day. His military service awarded him three Bronze Stars for the above mentioned campaign and The Good Conduct Medal. After the war Lynn and Alene came to Myrtle Creek in 1949. They lived in Myrtle Creek for 27 years and raised their family here. They later lived in Riddle for 20 years. During this period Lynn was a Lab- Technician for the Hanna Nickel Co. After 30 years of work he retired in 1985. The past 3 years they have resided in Roseburg. All his life he loved to hunt for game, fish, and working with flowers and his gardening, in addition to visiting with friends and family. Survivors include his wife Alene at the family home in Roseburg, daughters Lindra Brockett and husband Larry of Salinas, California, Billie Barkman and husband Frank of Livonia, Michigan and son Gerald Davenport and Peggy Vedder of Eugene, Oregon. He is also survived by grandchildren Colin Cox of Ashland, Oregon, Meghan Maze-Conway of Santa Cruz, California, Colleen Parker of Stanwood, Michigan, Erin Foltz of Redford, Michigan, Patrick Curran, Louis Barkman, Trisha Barkman and Julie Barkman all of Livonia, Michigan. Also six great grandchildren and too numerous to count nieces, nephews and loving friends. Visitation for family and friends will be Tuesday, June 5, 2001 6:00p.m. - 9:00p.m. at Myrtle Creek Family Funeral Home Chapel in Myrtle Creek, Oregon. Jean Eggers
EGGERS, Elizabeth Jean - Age 70, of Salem, Oregon, passed away on Saturday, June 2, 2001, in Corvallis, Oregon. She was born on July 16, 1930 to Chester and Gladys (Roen) Pickens in Salem, Oregon. Jean was raised and educated in Salem, Oregon graduating from Salem High School in 1948. She then attended and graduated from Oregon State University in 1952. At OSU she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority and Sigma Delta Pi honor society. During her time at college she met John Harold Eggers then married on August 16, 1952 in Salem, Oregon. She worked for a year as a secretary to the head of the English Dept. before her first of three son's was born in 1953. She then worked part-time for the OSU alumni magazine, The Oregon Stater for the 30 years. She was a Charter member of the Assistance League of Corvallis, Corvallis-Albany Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumnae Club. She was also a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, Good Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary, OSU Alumni Association, OSU Beaver Club, former president of the Mary's Peak Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. She was a former state officer of the OSU Mother's Club. She is survived by her sons, Kerry of Beaverton, OR, Brent of Milwaukie, OR, Thomas of Roseburg, OR; brother, Tom Pickens of Bend, OR; grandsons, Nicholas Eggers, Troy Eggers, and Andrew Eggers of Beaverton, OR, Lane Eggers of Roseburg, OR; granddaughter, Brittany Eggers of Roseburg, OR. She was preceded in death by her husband John in 1992. Memorial services will be Wednesday, June 6, 2001 at 10:00 am in the Grace Lutheran Church in Corvallis. Rev. Dan Halgrimson will officiate. Sharon Kay Restoule
RESTOULE, Sharon Kay - 43, of Sutherlin, passed away Thursday, May 31, 2001, at her home. She was born November 24, 1957 in Roseburg, Oregon to Addy and Shirley (Graves) Pickens. Sharon was raised in Roseburg and attended schools where she graduated in 1975. On September 8, 1991 in Lake Tahoe, Nevada she married Jesse Horne who preceded her in death on July 3, 1993. In 1986 Jesse and Sharon move from Roseburg to Sutherlin. She worked for many years as a secretary for Douglas Electric, Education Service District and the Public Defenders Office. Sharon enjoyed boating, animals and doing yardwork. She had a generous heart and was always giving. Sharon is now at peace. Survivors include her father Addy Pickens; sister Debbie Jones and her husband Don; brothers Gary Graves and his wife Candace and Larry Pickens and his wife Julie all of Roseburg; numerous nieces and nephews. Sharon was also preceded in death by her mother Shirley Pickens on May 7, 1993. Funeral services will be held Friday June 8, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. at Chapel of the Firs. Chaplain Wally Gwaltney will officiate. Private interment will be held within the grounds of Valley View Cemetery in Sutherlin. Lance Edwin Rhodes Jr.
RHODES JR., Lance Edwin - Age 56, of Myrtle Creek passed away May 30, 2001 in a Roseburg hospital. He was born July 20, 1944 in Seattle, Washington to Lance E. Rhodes Sr. and Venita (Farris) Rhodes. Lance grew up along the Oregon coast and attended school in Coos Bay. He was a veteran of the Navy serving during the Vietnam War. He married Pearl on June 11, 1982 in Roseburg, Oregon. They moved to Nevada in 1988 and he worked in the mines driving heavy equipment. They moved back to this area in 1997. Lance attended the Myrtle Creek Church of the Nazarene. He enjoyed cabinet making and other woodwork. Lance is survived by his wife Pearl of Myrtle Creek; sons, Lance Rhodes III of Utah and Tracy Rhodes of Texas; daughters, Betsy Jolly of Springfield, Oregon, Robyn Seehawer of North Bend, Oregon and Teresa Mitsch of Aurora, Colorado; his mother Venita Rhodes of Coos Bay, Oregon. Four sisters, Lana, Linda, Lisa and Laurie all of Washington State. He is also survived by ten grandchildren. He was Preceded in death by a grandson and a granddaughter, Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 2, 2001 at 2:00 P.M. at the Myrtle Creek Nazarene Church with Pastor Eldon Rayburn officiating. Private interment will be held at a later date. Donations in Lance's memory may be made to the Mercy Hospice program or the Veterans hospital nursing unit. Estelle West-Greene
WEST-GREENE, Estelle - 85, of Roseburg, and formerly of Strunk, Kentucky, died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at a hospital in Medford, after a short stay. She was born Thursday, August 19, 1915 in Scott County, Tennessee to Jeremiah (Jerry) and Susie Hamby West. Estelle married Estil C. Greene of Strunk, Kentucky on April 20, 1930. They were united in marriage, by Reverend Blue White in Revelo, Kentucky. The couple lived in Kentucky until 1951 when they moved their family to Oregon. Estelle was a homemaker and for many years, worked in home health and childcare. During her 26 years of retirement, she enjoyed traveling to Ohio and Kentucky, the outdoors, cooking southern style, visiting with loved ones and family gatherings. Estelle was a life long member of the Mt. Pleasant United Baptist Church in Strunk, Kentucky. She is survived by her children - Thelma Greene-Murphy and her husband Ralph of Harrison, Ohio, Pastor Raymond Greene and his wife Ester of Yoncalla, Ralph Greene and his wife Shirley of Roseburg, Dorsey Greene and his wife Elsie of Keizer, OR and Ruth Greene-Martin and her husband Carl of Medford; nine grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, six great great grandchildren and another one on the way. She was preceded in death by her husband, Estil, in 1998 and a daughter-in-law, Betty Davidson-Greene. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 7, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. in Wilson's Chapel of the Roses. Officiating will be Pastor Roger Crabtree. Interment will follow in Roseburg Memorial Gardens. George S. Cruikshank
CRUIKSHANK, George S. - 92, of Roseburg, passed away Saturday, June 2, 2001 in a local care center. He was born Wednesday, February 24, 1909 in Portland, Oregon to Wallace and Minnie (Thompson) Cruikshank. George grew up and attended school in Portland, graduating from Benson Tech. He attended the University of Oregon and then Oregon State University in the field of architecture. In 1933 he married Helen Heil in Laguna Beach, CA. While in California, George worked with Consolidate Voltee Aircraft as night foreman as well as several other businesses including raising oranges and a porcelain business. He was a member of the Kiwanis and Elks in California. He remarried on June 30, 1960 to Katherine "Kay" Johnston. George and Kay moved to Douglas County in 1966 and lived in Elkton, Yoncalla and Kellogg before moving to Roseburg in 1989. He was active in th Elkton and Yoncalla Lions and attended the Elkton Christian Church where he was instrumental in fashioning the steeple addition. For a period of time, George worked at the Yoncalla Feed Store. He was an accomplished craftsman, fashioning wood and porcelain as well as growing beautiful orchids. He enjoyed the outdoors, which included camping and hiking. First and foremost was loving and caring for his family. George is survived by his wife, Kay; children, Roger Cruikshank of Bieber, CA, Chuck and Nancy Cruikshank of Powell Butte, OR, Gordon and Carol Cruikshank of Menlo Park, CA, Bruce and Cheri Cruikshank of Castro Valley, CA, and Ron Jackson of Sutherlin; five grandchildren, Lisa, Christie, Kirstin, Brad and Scott; great-grandchildren, Amanda and Christina. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Doug, and a sister, when she was a child. Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 9, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. in the Westside Christian Church. Robert Dale Schmeichel
SCHMEICHEL, Robert Dale - Of Roseburg, passed away May 26 at Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital in Portland, Oregon. Dad was 69 years young; born in rural Douglas, North Dakota on December 4, 1931. He was preceded in death by parents Gustave and Thelma Schmeichel. Also survived by sisters Phyllis (Cal) Stahl of Auburn, WA, Joyce (Marshall) Macy of Marysville, WA, Doris (Eldon) Hill of Northfield, MN, brother Duane (Lois) Schmeichel of Minot; and many aunts, uncles and friends. He graduated from Minot High School in Minot, ND in 1949 and from Minot State Teacher's College and earned a Master's Degree from Oregon State University in Corvallis, OR. He served in the army in Okinawa. Dad enjoyed teaching at Umpqua Community College for almost 30 years; and was a long-time board member at Dougco Schools Credit Union. He savored life; loved to travel, read and garden. His unique sense of humor will be greatly missed. A private memorial gathering for the family will be held at Fort Stevens State Park to celebrate Dad's love of the outdoors. Ma Bell
BELL, Irene Abbie - age 93, ]of Roseburg, passed away on Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at her residence. She was born on Wednesday, December 18, 1907 at Neola, Iowa to John W. and Olive (Hough) McCauley. On May 2, 1929 in Plattsmouth, Nebraska she married Donald Bell. At the time of her marriage Irene was working as a telephone operator and the company she worked for would not allow their employees to be married. Irene and Donald kept their marriage a secret from the telephone company until September when Irene made the announcement to her employer and quit her job and left on their honeymoon. Irene and Donald moved to Roseburg in April of 1946 and Irene went to work for the telephone company as an operator and later a supervisor. She was nicknamed "Ma Bell" for obvious reasons. Although she was a working mother, her family was her first priority. Irene loved flowers, traveling, shoes and shopping. 1Her love of family is reflected in the fact that she was able to stay at home to be loved and cared for by her family right up to her death. Irene was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. She is survived by her husband Donald to whom she was married for over 72 years, her children: Nancy and Roger Snyder, Bill and Lee Drake of Roseburg, Grandchildren: Catherine and Michael Levison of Tacoma, WA, Kelley and Thom Ramsey of Redmond, WA, Lance and Sarah Drake, Mitch and Lynda Drake all of Redding, CA, great grandchildren: Renda, Dylan, Mary, Darby, Billy, Rachel, Vance, Jessica, Amanda, and Kelsey. Great Great Grandchildren: Jullian and Ciel, numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2001 at 11:00 AM at Wilson's Chapel of the Roses. Pastor Reishke will be officiate. Interment will follow in the Roseburg Memorial Gardens. At the family's request, contributions may be made in Mrs. Bell memory to the Open Door Clinic, 544 W. Harbour, Bud
HARBOUR, Bud - age 75, of Roseburg, passed away at his home and that of his daughter, Mary, on June 4th, 2001. Bud Harbour was born in Seminole, Oklahoma on August 1, 1925 to Roy Lee and Mary Jane Harbour. He served in the United States Army with the 31st Infantry Division, known a the Dixie Division, in the Pacific theater. He saw action in the New Guinea and on the islands of Morotai, Mindanao and Mindoro. He was honorably discharged in October of 1945. He married Lorene Hughes and August 5, 1947 in Gainsville, TX. Bud farmed and later worked as a plumber. He and Lorene had five children. Prior to coming to Roseburg in January of 2000, he had lived in Soap Lake, Washington for approximately 25 years. In the Soap Lake area Bud made many close friends and actively pursued his hobbies of gardening and fishing. He was a proud member of the local Soap Lake VFW Post 2900. He was a loving husband and father and a very gracious man who loved to share the produce from his extensive garden and fruit trees. He is survived by three sisters Lois Fliger of W. Tawakoni, TX, Verna Lovely of Caryville, TN, Fran Harbour of Coleman, OK and a brother, Stan Harbour of Atoka, OK; children Angie Robertson, of Tahlequah, OK, Linda McGhehey of Tillamook, OR, Mary Myhre of Roseburg, OR, Bud Harbour Jr. of Oakland, OR and Marsha Harbour of Kirkland, WA; and three grandchildren, Terrie Walker, Michael and Matthew Myhre. He was preceded in death by his wife Lorene in December of 1999 and by two brothers, Wayne and CL Harbour. A military graveside service will be held on Friday, June 8, 2001 at 1:00 PM at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. ROSEBURG FUNERAL ALTERNATIVES is assisting the family.
Mark L. Hanna
HANNA, Mark Lewis - Age 78, of Roseburg, passed on Wednesday, May 31, 2K at Mercy First Care Unit. Mark was born July 28th, 1921 in Oakland, Oregon to Charles (Fred ) Hanna and Sophia L. Hanna. He was in the class of 1938 at Roseburg High School. In 1940 after the death of his father, Mark and his mother moved to San Francisco. Mark was in the Merchant Marines between 1942 and 1949. He was self employed from 1950 to 1977 until he retired. In 1969 Mark and his son Bob moved back to Roseburg where from 1970 to 1977 they owned Automotive Muffler Center. Mark enjoyed driving and restoring classic cars, visiting with his many friends and relatives. Survivors include his two sons, Mark L. Hanna Jr. of California, Robert A. Hanna, daughter-in-law Cheryl A. Hanna and grandson D. Eli Hanna of Roseburg, step-children that he raised, Phyllis Gonzales, Vickie Brooks, Darrell Page and Forrest page along with their four children and grandchildren. Mark will be missed by his family and friends. He wanted no services. A celebration of his life will be set for a latter day.
MAMIE D. WILSON
WILSON, Mamie D. - Passed away Thursday, June 1, 2000 in a care home in Springfield, Oregon. She was born in Toledo, Washington on July 16, 1903 to William S. and Eliza J. Deane. She graduated from Toledo High School and received her degree from Washington State University at Pullman, where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. She later did graduate work at the University of Washington. She taught school in Toledo. It was then she met John P. Wilson of Riddle, Oregon. They were married June 18, 1932 and made their home in Myrtle Creek where Dr. Wilson practiced dentistry. Mamie resided in their home in Myrtle Creek for sixty-six years. During the war years, Mamie taught school at Myrtle Creek High School and in later years substituted. She also assisted her husband in his dental office. She served as register of vital statistics for southern Douglas County for many years. She was always active in Masonic organization serving as Worthy Matron of Eastern Star and spent many years involved with the International Order of Jobs Daughters. She served as Grand Guardian of the state of Oregon. Mamie liked traveling. She enjoyed duplicate bridge, sewing, and all kinds of needle work. She was also an avid reader. She and her husband hunted and fished together. Later, she fished with her grandsons. Her garden and pets were an important part of her life. The Wilson's property at Florence has always been a very special retreat for the family since the late 1930's. She did her best to communicate with the many friends she had throughout her life. Mamie loved her family dearly and has truly been the matriarch since her husband's early death in 1964. Her only brother, Joseph W. Deane of Montesano, Washington., preceded her in death in 1973. She is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and Bob Foote of Bend, and Donna and George McClure of Florence, and her foster daughter Ruth Lien and her husband Al of Eugene and Ruth's son. She has five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. A memorial service has been set for June 13, 2000 at 11:00 am. at the United Methodist Church in Myrtle Creek at 437 N.W 2nd Street. Mack D. Jones
JONES, Mack D. - Of Sun City, Arizona, (formally of Myrtle Creek, Oregon) passed away June 5, 2001 at the age of 57. He passed peacefully in his sleep at home. He was preceded in death by his mother, June Mary Crouch and his brother James Cleo Jones. He is survived by his father and step-mother, James Cleo and Alva Jean Jones; two sisters and their husbands, Bobbie June Johnson (Vic), and Lee Dennis; one brother and his wife, Cecil Harrell (Sherrie); his wife of 23 years, Vickie A. "Sabin"; five sons and their wives, Clifford Case (Teresa), Ken Sabin, Richard Jones, Billy Smith (Melissa), Michael Jones (Shannon); two daughters and their husbands, Marijean "Jones" Bernardo (Eddie), Laura Smith; nine grandchildren; and three great grandchildren in his immediate family. He is also survived by numerous other step children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren....to numerous to list. Mack served in the United States Marines as a truck driver, spending his most memorable times in Okinawa. He continued driving when he came back to the states: working for numerous companies including West Coast Truck Lines and Irelands. He then purchased his own truck and worked for Interstate Distributors, Vail Northwest, and Sherman Bros. He was famous for his "big hugs" and his "great barbecues". He left a "legacy of love" with his family and friends that will never be forgotten. A private family burial will be held at 3:00 P.M. Monday, June 11th at Roseburg Memorial Gardens in Roseburg, Oregon. Directly afterward, a "Celebration of his life" will be held for friends and family at 5:00 P.M. at Pizza Palace in Tri City (Where he and his current wife fell in love.) In lieu of flowers the family suggests a donation to the American Cancer Society in the deceased's name.
Pauline E. Ritzman
RITZMAN, Pauline E. - a former long time resident of Riddle, Oregon, passed away May 23, at the age of 90, in Chehalis, Washington. Mrs. Ritzman was born July 16, 1910 in Comanche, Texas. Mrs. Ritzman worked for many years for Herbert Lumber Company in Riddle before her retirement in 1975. She is survived by her son Thomas Ritzman of Chehalis, Washington, her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Donald Baulig of Vancouver, Washington, three grandchildren, Todd Baulig, Vancouver, Patricia Schell, Bonney Lake, Pamela Brown, Auburn, and five great-grandchildren. Her husband, Thomas, her brother, Milton Acker, and her sister Ethel Bond preceded Pauline in death. Graveside services were held at Roseburg Memorial Gardens Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at 2:00 PM. Mary Ann Scott
SCOTT, Mary Ann - 66, a resident of Riddle, Oregon, passed away at her home, Wednesday morning, June 6, 2001. She was born at Staples, Minnesota on July 17, 1935, the daughter of Elmer and Emma Powell. She grew up in Smithville, Missouri and relocated to Southern Oregon on February 14, 1973 and has lived in Riddle since 1974. She was preceded in death by her mother and father and four brothers, William, Charles, Harold and Elmer Powell Jr. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge at Canyonville. Surviving are six children; Viola Stevens of Illinois, Larry and Rosemary Pahl of Oregon, Penny Maunu of Oklahoma, Johnny Coonce of Kansas, Willie Scott of Oregon and Wilma Pierson of Oklahoma, eight grandchildren; Francis, Mitchell, Benjamin, Talitha, Sybyl, Rebeca, Caleb and Krista and one great grandchild expected in October 2001. She also is survived by her Aunt Ruth and Uncle Loren Powell of Riddle, Oregon. Also surviving by her Aunt Ruth and Uncle Loren Powell of Riddle, Oregon. Also surviving are five sisters; Cris Carpenter of Oregon, Jenny DeVoogde of Oregon, Phyllis Pennington of California, Helen Kippel of Indiana, and Irene Torres of Oklahoma. She will be deeply missed. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contribution to the American Heart Association, 1425 N.E. Irving #100, Portland, Oregon, or to The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, 1130 SW Morrison, Suite 400, Portland, Oregon 97205. A private family remembrance will be held at a later date. Colleen "Connie" Byers
BYERS, Colleen "Connie" - A memorial service will be held March 3 for Colleen F. "Connie" Byers of Elkton, who died February 25 of complications of diabetes. She was 68. Byers was born October 5, 1932, in Arago to Willey and Fern Knabe Cornwell. She married Charles Byers in Reno, Nevada on August 31, 1974. Byers was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband; five daughters, Candy Weatherly of Elkton, Chris Baimbridge of Springfield, Jennifer Peterson of Vancouver, Washington, Diane Oden of Brenten, Florida and Vicki Cartwright of Eugene; a son Jon Clemo of Kellogg, Oregon; a sister, Muriel Madison of Kellogg, Oregon; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Her first husband, Charles Clemo died in 1971. Saturday's service will be held at 11 a.m. at Scottsburg Community Church. DUNES MEMORIAL CHAPEL is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
Robert H. Corrigan
CORRIGAN, Robert H. - 72, of Brookings passed away on February 18, 2001 in Brookings. He was born on January 15, 1929 in Aberdeen, Washington. He moved to Myrtle Creek during his high school years. He met Donna Schaefer in high school and they later married. They moved to Brookings in 1951 where he worked as a truck driver for Brookings Plywood and later South Coast Lumber Company. He enjoyed camping, water skiing and traveling. Survivors are his wife of 52 years Donna Schaefer of Brookings; daughter and son-in-law Julie and Frank Corzine; sons and daughters-in-law Terry and Cheryl Corrigan and Mike and Nancy Corrigan; son Tim Corrigan. Also surviving are four grandchildren and four great -grandchildren. A memorial service was held on February 24, 2001 at 1 p.m. at Litty Funeral Home, 517 Railroad Ave. Remembrances and donations may be sent to Curry County Hospice, P.O. Box 6042, Brookings, OR 97415.
