Jimmy Allen Collins
COLLINS, Jimmy Allen - A memorial gathering was held Sunday, March 25, at the home of Jimmy Allen Collins, who passed away March 20 after a five year battle with cancer. He was 63. He was born Jan. 9, 1938, in Morris, Minn., to Mura and Amanda Collins, the first of four children. After graduating from Chokio (Minn.) Public School in 1956, he ventured out west, first to Los Angeles and then to Portland, where his father lived. He attended night school at Portland State University and later transferred to Oregon State University, where he met his wife, Shirley and graduated with a degree in biological science in 1967. Jim worked for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife for 31 years as a wildlife biologist, working first in Grants Pass, Medford and Gold Beach, before moving to Roseburg for good in 1976. At the Roseburg office he worked on issues relating to non-game wildlife and endangered species. He spent his life working and playing in the outdoors, identifying and photographing plants and animals, hiking, camping, canoeing, rafting, fishing and hunting. But he also listened, watched and marveled at the tranquillity of nature, which he hoped would always be preserved for the next generation to enjoy. He served a crucial role in creating and constructing the Stewart Park Nature Trail, a project that was dedicated to him upon its completion. Jim was also a skilled woodcarver, craftsman and artist. His accomplishments included building a second story to his home, a sailboat, an experimental airplane and numerous duck and fish decoys as well as a miniature carousel horse. He also taught introductory woodcarving classes through Umpqua Community College in recent years. Though he was diagnosed with cancer in 1996, he continued to enjoy life despite the radiation and chemotherapy treatments. His final wish was to visit his son in Baltimore, Md., so he could tour Washington D.C. and Annapolis, Md., for the first time. He endured great pain to make the trip this month and after several days of sightseeing, he finally came to rest at a hospice center in Baltimore the day he was scheduled to fly back to Roseburg. His father and mother preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Michelle Collins of Lake Oswego; a son, Eric, of Baltimore, Md.; three sisters, Marie and John Eblen of Morris, Minn., Mary and Don Jipson of Hancock, Minn. and Pearl and Ray Jipson, of Portland, Oregon.
