Luther Lotz
LOTZ, Luther - A former resident of Roseburg passed away in Olympia, Washington, April 18, 2001. He was married to the former Olive Francis and is survived by his wife, two daughters, Judy Alexander, Cynthia Elieff and their spouses; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He and his wife spent much of their time earlier years in their travel trailer with grandchildren. Luther and his wife lived in Roseburg for 27 years after he retired. He served in the Army during World War II in Europe. After being discharged he was employ ed by the the Alaska R.R. as a locomotive engineer and retired from this service in 1972. In October 2000 he and his wife moved to Washington to be closer to their family. God saw you getting tired, then a cure was not to be. So he closed his arms around you and whispered "Come to me." You didn't deserve what you went through, and so he gave you rest. God's Garden must be beautiful, he only takes the best. And when I saw you sleeping, so peaceful and free from pain, I could not wish you back to suffer that again.
Wilma E. Wagoner
WAGONER, Wilma E. - Age 67, a resident of Riddle, passed away at the Mercy House following a long battle with cancer. Wilma was born to James and Mattie Brantley Lundsford in Blue Ball, Arkansas on July 22, 1933. After marrying Alfred Wagoner they moved to Riddle, Oregon. They spent nearly 50 years of their married life in Riddle. Wilma worked as a daycare provider and cared for hundreds of children over the years. She was known lovingly as "Nana" to all. She taught Sunday school at the Open Bible Church at Riddle for many years. Surviving are her husband Alfred of Riddle; son Mitch and his wife Karen and their two children Marshall and Stuart; and son Steven and his wife DeShawn and their three children Cole, Shea nd Kendall. She is also survived by her brother, Buel Wagoner; sister Lois Sykes and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. The family of Wilma Wagoner kindly asks those wishing to send a gift, flowers or contributions to consider making a donation to the Open Bible Christian Center's building fund in her memory. Dr. Robert Hence Young Jr.
YOUNG JR., Robert Hence - Age 71, of Oakland passed away May 12, 2001 in a Roseburg care center. He was born May 26, 1929 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Robert Hence Young Sr. and Frances (Spencer) Young. Robert attended Harvard University but quit in his last semester to join the Army. While serving his country he was placed in the medic unit. From being in this until he decided he wanted to become a doctor. After leaving the Army he enrolled in the University of Maryland Medical School from which he graduated. During his second year of school he met his future wife Mary Louise Gunning who was a nurse. They were married on August 31, 1957 in Baltimore, Maryland. Robert had a private medical practice in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho from 1964 to 1984. In 1985 he went to work at the Roseburg Veterans hospital and served there until 1997. He was a member of the Holy Spirit Episcopal Church in Sutherlin, the Urological Medical Association and the American Falconers Association. He was a bagpiper in the Spokane, Washington area. His hobbies were fishing, hunting, camping and his dogs. Robert went on several trips with Earth Watch to Mongolia. Survivors include his wife Mary Louise Young of Oakland, Oregon; his children Michael Young and his wife Theresa of Lancaster, California, Helen Kupeli and her husband Mehmet of Corvallis, Oregon and David Young and his wife Theresa Young of Salem, Oregon; his mother Frances Young; a sister Virginia Blacklidge both of Kensington, California; grandchildren Christopher Young of Beaverton, Oregon, Iain and Gillian Young both of Lancaster, California. Frederic Carl Fleshman
FLESHMAN, Frederic Carl - 75, of Myrtle Creek passed away at home May 15, 2001 of natural causes. He was born April 11, 1926 in Mishawaka, Indiana to James C. Fleshman and Thelma E. (Cofer) Fleshman. In 1954 he was married to Gloria Zona in Washington state. Fred served in the US Air Force for 20 years as a flight man and navigator in World War II. He also served in the Korean War, Cuban Crisis and Vietnam. He returned to the mainland after graduating from University of Hawaii and went to Southern Oregon University receiving several degrees also receiving his master's degree in Education. He was a teacher for 30 years in the Tri-City district. Fred was a founding board member of the DougCo Credit Union. He was active in the Masons, Eastern Star, and B.P.O.E. He also a member of both St. George and Ascension Episcopal Churches. Fred like fishing, had a boat in Winchester Bay and loved spending time on the boat and family activities. Fred is survived by his wife Gloria of 47 years; his children Michael Fleshman of Myrtle Creek, Marie Michel of Springfield, Melinda Hamlin of Springfield and James Fleshman of US Air Force Base Utah; seven grandsons; two granddaughters and a sister Thelma Johnson of Paradise, California. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 17, 2001 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday, May 18, 2001 12 to 5 p.m. at Mountain View Memorial Chapel in Myrtle Creek. Services will be held at the Ascension Episcopal Church on Saturday, May 19, 2001 at 2 p.m. in Riddle. MOUNTAIN VIEW MEMORIAL CHAPEL is assisting the family. Cremation rites will follow at a later date.
Jethro Leo Keith
KEITH, Jethro Leo - Age 87, a resident of Dillard passed away May 15, 2001. He was born March 25, 1914 in Buffalo, Missouri to parents James and Ida (Hainey) Keith. Jethro was united in marriage for over 64 years to his wife Wanda who recently preceded him in death in May 1, 2001. Mr. Keith retired from being a longshoreman and moved with his wife Wanda to this area in 1976 to be near their family. Survivors include daughters Sharon Currington of Winston and Norma Stembridge of Myrtle Creek; grandchildren Gary Stembridge of Myrtle Creek, Larry Stembridge of Myrtle Creek, Doreen Roles of Winston, Daryle Currington of Winston and 11 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 18, 2001 at 11 a.m. at TAYLOR'S FAMILY CHAPEL in Winston with Pastor Wayne Knox officiating. Private interment will be at Roseburg Memorial Gardens.
LaRue Gibbs Keys
KEYS, LaRue Gibbs - Age 81, of Albany Oregon passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2001 at a hospital in Portland, Oregon. She was born October 13, 1919 in Lewisburg, Kentucky, the second of five children born to parents Ervin Franklin and Eunice Alberta (Dorris) Gibbs. After growing up in Lewisburg and attending college at Western Kentucky in Bowling Green, she taught at a one-room schoolhouse in a small mining town in Kentucky. LaRue married Lester Keys on February 4, 1943 in Boise, Idaho, while he was serving the Army Air Corps there. Lester's career as a physician both as a civilian and with the Air Force that took the family all over the United States and to the Panama Canal Zone. They retired in 1974 to Sierra Vista, Arizona. After Lester died in June of 1993, LaRue moved to Tucson then came to Albany in March of last year to be near to her family. LaRue became very active and respected in the Baha'i faith in Texas, Arizona and Oregon. She was also an accomplished artist in watercolors, acrylics and oils and was known for making friends and staying in touch. Survivors include her sons Chris Keys of Albany,Oregon, Clyde Keys of Roseburg, Oregon and Charles Keys of Alder Point, California; daughter Karen LaRue Keys of Denver, North Carolina; brother Clifton Gibbs of Lewisburg, Kentucky; sister Carmen Durrett of Bristol, Virginia; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by son Clint Keys in September of 1982; brother Wilmer Gibbs; sister Jamie Koon; infant granddaughter Angel in July of 1970 and grandson David in October 2000. Graveside services will be held Friday, May 18th at 3 p.m. at Waverly Memorial Cemetery in Albany, Oregon. AASUM FUNERAL HOME of Albany is in care of arrangements.
Donald Edward Smalley
SMALLEY, Donald Edward - 73, of Sutherlin passed away Saturday, May 14, 2001 in a Roseburg hospital. He was born October 16, 1927 in Calabasas, California to Granville R. and Mabel (Stokes) Smalley. Mr. Smalley served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He worked for several years as an inmate work crew supervisor for the county in California. Mr. Smalley moved from Canyon Country, California to Sutherlin in 1985. On December 13, 1986 in Sutherlin he married Dolores Langgood. Mr. Smalley enjoyed doing leatherwork, bowling, hunting and fishing. Survivors include his wife Dolores Smalley of Sutherlin; daughters Barbara Jean and Georgia Lee; sister Lorraine Neely of Boulder, Nevada; a brother Clifford Smalley of Sutherlin and nieces and nephews. Charley Joe Davis Sr.
DAVIS Sr., Charley Joe - 74, of Sutherlin passed away Tuesday May 15, 2001 in a Roseburg hospital. He was born June 18, 1926 in Iowa Park, Texas to Warren A. and Mattie L. (Harris) Davis. Mr. Davis served in the US Navy during World War II. On August 24, 1962 in Tacoma, Washington he married Phyllis L. Clark. Mr. Davis worked for 30 years as a long haul truck driver. He owned and operated his own truck for several years. Mr. Davis also worked for 11 1/2 years as a truck driver for West Coast Grocery in Tacoma, Washington. The Davis' moved from Tacoma, Washington to Sutherlin in 1996. He was a member of the Sutherlin Assembly of God, Teamsters Local 313 and the Elks Lodge. Survivors include his wife Phyllis Davis of Sutherlin; children Warren Davis, Cindy Bradford, Daniel Clark and Kimberly Hopper all of Washington; 12 grandchildren and three great- grandchildren. Memorial services will be held Monday May 21, 2001 at 11 a.m. at the SKP Park club house in Sutherlin. Pastor Brian Mercer Will officiate. Private cremation rites have been held. OLIVER GRAZIANO, Elise E. - Age 42, of Colorado Springs, Colorado passed away on May 14, 2001 in Denver, Colorado. She was born March 11, 1959 in Korea. Elise was a teacher in her lifetime. She is survived by sons Darren Paul Graziano of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Joseph Michael Graziano of Colorado Springs, Colorado, father Everett Wade Oliver of Roseburg, Oregon, mother Phyllis Elva Oliver of Roseburg, Oregon, brothers Weldon Oliver of Fremont, California, Wesly Wade Oliver of Bellevue, Washington, and Nathan Wade OIiver of Seattle, Washington, sisters Kelley Kim Brant of Sisters, Oregon, Elaine E. Knight of Beaverton, Oregon, and Holly M. Thrasher of LaPine, Oregon, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by a brother Warren Harold Oliver on April 16, 1992. David Price Lewis Sr.
LEWIS SR., David Price - Went to be with our Lord on May 5th, 2001. His beloved wife Lorraine Ring Lewis preceded him in death. Dave was a man who enjoyed helping other people. He is survived by: his two sons; David Lewis Jr., Dr. Doyle Lewis USN (Ret); six grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Dave was born in Web, Saskatchewan, Canada on March 2, 1914. He graduated from High School in Lone, WA. He spent the majority of his adult life in Roseburg, OR where he retired from the Forest Products industry after almost 40 years of service. He was active in his church, and as a volunteer at the Veterans Hospital and Habitat for Humanity. He enjoyed golfing, woodworking, and spending time with family and friends from the Good Sam RV club. His memorial service will be held in the Parish Hall at St George's Episcopal Church at 10:00 AM on Saturday May 26th. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to either St George's Memorial Fund or Mercy Medical Hospice Services.
Melvin Daymon Lunsford
LUNSFORD, Melvin Daymon - Age 88, of Sutherlin, passed away on Thursday, May 17, 2001 from the effects of a stroke. He was born May 9, 1913 in Green City, Missouri, son of Noah and Lola (McGill) Lunsford. In 1933, he was united in marriage to Myrtle Bebout, and they celebrated 68 years of marriage last February. Mel grew up helping his father run a small sawmill in Iowa. He later worked in the sawmills in Coos Bay as well as the aircraft industry in San Diego. He retired in 1975 and they moved back to Oregon. In retirement, Mel and Myrtle park-hosted in Oregon in the summers and Southern California during the winters. They finally came back "home" to the Timber Valley SKP park in Sutherlin ten years ago. He attended the Sutherlin Assembly Of God Church. Mel was a gifted clockmaker and furniture maker. He also repaired and refinished furniture, particularly antique pieces. There was virtually nothing he could not fix or repair. His wood creations and handiwork are in the various homes of his family and relatives as a constant reminder of his generous and giving life. Mel was an avid fisherman in his younger years but mostly he was a loving grandpa and great-grandpa. He is survived by his wife Myrtle of Sutherlin, OR, Sons; Merle Lunsford & his wife Judy of Coos Bay,OR Bob Lunsford and his wife Lynn of San Diego, CA. Five grandchildren, Leigh Shore and Mark Lunsford of North Bend, OR., Jeff Lunsford of San Diego, CA and Nathan and Matthew Lunsford, both of Phoenix, AZ, Three great-grandchildren; Kara Shore of North Bend, OR and Nicole and Salvador Lunsford of San Diego, CA. A sister, Edith Parker of North Bend and numerous nieces and nephews also survive him. Memorial services will be held Sunday, May 20, 2001 at 2:30 P.M. at SKP Club House in Sutherlin. Mazie Lee Baumeister
BAUMEISTER, Mazie Lee - 91, of Idleyld Park, passed away Monday, April 30, 2001 at her residence. She was born on Wednesday, November 24, 1909 at Colville, Washington to Lee Burdett and Florence Belle (Campbell) English. On June 23, 1933 in Colville she married Herman Carl Baumeister, who preceded her in death on January 7, 1977. The Baumeisters moved to Roseburg in 1953 and resided here until 1973 when they moved to Cascade Locks. While in Roseburg Mazie worked at Douglas Community Hospital for eight years. Following the death of her husband Mazie moved to White Salmon, Washington where she was a hospice volunteer. She later moved to Port Hadlock, Washington and then back to the Roseburg area in July 2000. Mazie was a wife, mother and a grandmother. Mazie has "Gone Home", she would say "I'm going home" when she talked about her own death. Mrs. Baumeister is survived by six children, Leon Baumeister and his wife Wanda of Bremerton, Washington, Frank Baumeister and his wife Barbara of Reno, Nevada, Ann Olson of Hood River, Oregon, Ellen Watkins and her husband David of Idleyld Park, Oregon, Betty Graham and her husband Bob of Port Hadlock, Washington and Bill Baumeister of Idleyld Park, Oregon; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a brother Delbert English and his wife Mae of Tracyton, Washington and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Baumeister was also preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters Claude and Neil, Hazel and Patty and a grandson Lucas King who died on June 29, 2000. Graveside services will be held on Monday, May 7, 2001 at 2 p.m. at the Mountain View Memorial Cemetery in Hood River, Oregon. Wanda Lavina Keith
KEITH, Wanda Lavina - Age 82, a resident of Dillard passed away May 1, 2001. She was born August 7, 1918 in Portland, Oregon to parents William Franklin and Nora (Woods) Snider. Wanda was united in marriage to Jethro Keith and just celebrated 64 years together in February. The Keiths moved to this area in 1976 to be near family. Wanda loved visiting with her children and grandchildren and listening to country western music. Survivors include her husband Jethro Keith of Dillard; daughters Sharon Currington of Winston and Norma Stembridge of Myrtle Creek; brothers Howard Snider of Arizona and J.B. Snider of California; grandchildren Gary Stembridge of Myrtle Creek, Larry Stembridge of Myrtle Creek, Doreen Roles of Winston and Daryle Currington of Winston and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 4, 2001 at 11a.m. at TAYLOR'S FAMILY CHAPEL in Winston with Pastor Wayne Knox officiating. Lena Mae Self
SELF, Lena Mae - At the age of 73, resident of South Myrtle Creek, Oregon, Lena went to be with her Lord on Monday, April 30, 2001 at a hospital in Roseburg. She was born near Renick, West Virginia to Guy and Rosie Neathawk Weakley on April 9, 1928. Lena moved west to Riddle, Oregon with 21 family members and friends in 1937. She began school in a one-room school near Ketchum Creek and attended Riddle schools thereafter. Lena married Bruce A. Briggs from South Myrtle Creek in 1945. They were blessed with two sons, Bruce and Stephen Briggs. Later in life she married Ernie Self. They had a wonderful life together and enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and canning. Her fruit house was brimming with beautiful canned fruits and vegetables. Lena loved to share these with family and friends. She was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, cousin and aunt. Her kitchen was filled with yummy food, jams, jellies and always love and laughter. Lena's home was a favorite spot for many to enjoy her company with a cup of coffee and a delicious goodie. Lena will be missed by all who were blessed to be a part of her life. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Stephen and Jennifer Briggs of Myrtle Creek, Oregon; brother and sister-in-law Hubert "Buck" and Dora Weakley, sister Dorothy Ritterspauch; grandson and wife Jason and Alice Briggs; grandsons Michael and Ryan Briggs; granddaughter Noelle Kaykas; great-granddaughters Brittany Briggs and Trijonie Kaykas and many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 5, 2001 at Mountain View Memorial Chapel at Myrtle Creek, Oregon with Pastor Carl Slaughter officiating. Geraldine S. Berkshire
BERSHIRE, Geraldine S. - Age 76, a resident of Roseburg, passed away at home on May 19, 2001. She was born April 3, 1925 in New Castle, Pennsylvania to parents Clifford and Senia (Wanennen) Olson. Geraldine was united in marriage to Bill G. Berkshire February 27, 1947. Bill and Geraldine moved to Portland from Detroit, Michigan in 1947. In July of 1995 they made their home in Roseburg. Mrs. Berkshire will be remembered as a talented seamstress. She enjoyed any kind of sewing, especially making dolls, doll clothes and quilts. Geraldine retired in 1986 from Lincoln National Insurance Company. Survivors include her husband Bill G. Berkshire of Roseburg; a daughter Barbara Becker and her husband Thomas. Grandchildren include Lauren, age 12, and Danny, age 11, all of the Seattle, Washington area. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Norman Olson and sister Gwen Poyhonen. Funeral Services were held at Taylor's Family Chapel with interment at the Eagle Point National Cemetery in Eagle Point, Oregon. Jean Crites
CRITES, Jean - age 73, of Yoncalla, OR, passed away Saturday, May 19, 2001. She was born on February 28, 1928 in Caney, Oklahoma to John and Lillie Simpson. She married Robert Jessie Crites on September 3, 1949 in Grayson County, Texas. She has been a longtime resident of Yoncalla for over 40 years. Jean graduated from Caney High School. She was a homemaker and she also worked for Weyerhauser, Elkton Tree Farm. Jean loved spending time with family, cooking and camping. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary Post 3995 of Drain, OR. Survivors include her husband, Robert Jessie Crites; daughters, Sheila Martin of Veneta, OR, Joyce Hammer of Oakland, OR, Mary Crites of Toledo, OR, Bobbie Palmer of Yoncalla, OR, Candace Crites of Spokane, WA; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Vickie Duncan and grandson, Jessie Crites. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 23, 2001, at 7 to 9 p.m. at SMITH-LUND-MILLS Funeral Chapel, Cottage Grove. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 24, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Yoncalla Assembly of God. Burial site is located at Yoncalla Masonic Cemetery, Yoncalla, OR.
Lacy Dawn Harris
HARRIS, Lacy Dawn - age 17, of Roseburg, OR, passed away May 17, 2001, from the results of a vehicle accident. She was born October 15, 1983 in Cottage Grove, Oregon. She is survived by her daughter Adriana Eve Sanders, nine months old.; her parents Wesley and Valrey Harris of Roseburg; sisters, Tanya Harris and Cheyenne Harris both of Roseburg; her grandmother, Violet Collins of Yoncalla and grandparents Jerry and Joyce Harris of The Dalles Oregon and many aunts and uncles, numerous cousins and many, many friends!! She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Gene Collins in March of 2001. Lacy began school in Yoncalla and moved to the Green area in 1995. She was attending school in Roseburg at the time of her death. Lacy had a love for life and people. She just knew she could change the world to be a better place. She saw a good side in everybody and strived to bring it out. Lacy knew how important her education was and let no obstacles get in her way. She worked hard the last year of her life to finish her high school early so she could go to college and make a good life for her daughter. Lacy and Adrianna went to school in the morning. Then Lacy went to work and then Lacy came home and took care of her baby. She refused to let her parents buy formula or diapers for her baby because she said that it was her responsibility and she wanted to do it on her own. She even went to pick up cans and bottles to buy formula and diapers. Her large network of family and friends gave her the strength to do this. Lacy touched the hearts of everyone that met her or knew her. She will be greatly missed, but the value she had will live on in everybody she touched. Anyone who knew Lacy or met Lacy, there will be services Friday, May 25, 2001, in the Yoncalla Assembly of God Church on Hayhurst Road at 1 p.m. Pastor Steve Cundiff will be officiating. Bessie Agnes Rathbun
RATHBUN, Bessie Agnes - of Sutherlin, went to be with God, Sunday, May 20, 2001, at the age of 86. She was born Bessie Agnes Curtis, September 7, 1914, in Portland, Oregon to Raymond and Agnes (Mathison) Curtis of Rufus, Oregon. Bessie was united in marriage to Hercules E. Rathbun on October 4, 1936, in Bandon, Oregon. She and her husband and their two small sons lived in Bandon for 11 years. They lived there at the time of the Bandon fire and witnessed the destruction of the town while standing on the beach during a freakishly low tide. They moved to Tyee Camp, residing there for three years before making their final home in Sutherlin in 1950. Bessie enjoyed raising a garden, quilting and spending time with her children. She raised a granddaughter and loved to spoil her. She was a member of the Rebeka Lodge. She delivered newspapers from 1968 until 1979 for the News-Review. Bessie is survived by sons, Everett Earl and wife Jacqueline Rathbun of Sutherlin, Harold Rathbun of Sutherlin, Jerry (Ratty) Rathbun of Umpqua and daughter Mae Bates of Sutherlin; grandchildren Cathy and pat Sands of Chico, California, Edward (Scooter) Rathbun of Roseburg, Anne Bayless of Sutherlin, Sara Rathbun and Ryan Rathbun of Roseburg and sister Rose DuFault of Roseburg. Bessie was preceded in death by her husband, Everett in 1964, her mother, three brothers and a sister. Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Thursday, May 24, 2001, at CHAPEL OF THE FIRS, in Sutherlin. Officiating will be Vicar Steve Waterman of St. Johns Lutheran church. Interment will be at Fair Oaks Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of Chapel of the Firs.
Wesley "Dubba" Robert Garlock
GARLOCK, Wesley "Dubba" Robert - age 90, of Roseburg, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 19, 2001. He was born on Friday, October 7, 1910 at Woodbury, Connecticut to Edmond Hiram and Jesse Mae (Ward) Garlock. Chaplain Garlock began his ministry in 1928 as a traveling evangelist. In 1931 he graduated from Zion Bible College with a bachelor of theology degree. On November 21, 1931 in East Providence, Rhode Island he married Mildred Whitaker, who preceded him in death on March 9, 1984. Mr. Garlock held several pastoral positions including Clayville Community Church and Quaker Meeting House in Rhode Island. He founded the Gospel Crusaders, a youth ministry in 1938 and remained their director until 1958. In 1958 he was commissioned by the Governor of Rhode Island, as a state institutional chaplain. That same year he relocated to San Diego, California where he was appointed resident chaplain to Edgemoor Geriatric Hospital. Mr. Garlock served on the board of directors for the Hospital Chaplaincy of America. He also served as a Boy Scouts chaplain for 25 years and a director with sr. citizens for Christ. As an ordained minister for the Church of the Foursquare he served as a minister of visitation for the San Diego Foursquare Church and pastored the Lakeside Foursquare Church. Chaplain Wesley Garlock was a talented musician, a gifted preacher and teacher for a total of 73 years. On November 22, 1984 in El Cajon, California he married Lucille Salle. They moved to Roseburg in March of 1994. Locally chaplain Garlock has been active in Christian service and was a member of the Church of the Nazarene and active in the Fellowship of Christian Cowboys. He recently received the Citizens Lifetime Service Award for Christian Service in the City of Roseburg. He is survived by his wife of 17 years Lucille Garlock of Roseburg; four daughters, Roberta "Bobbie" Standen and husband Tom of Midpines, California, Alice Exceen and husband Al of Roseburg, Oregon, Judy Blecha and husband Bob of Mariposa, California, Sharon Papastathis and husband John of Grants Pass, Oregon; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; a sister Esther Bortz of Sun City, Arizona and many Christian friends throughout the world. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, May 23, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Salvation Army Chapel, 3130 NE Stephens, Pastor Hank Allmand will officiate. Private cremation rites have been held. At the family's request contributions may be made in Chaplain Garlock's memory to Zion Bible Institute, Student Scholarship Fund, Acct. #15362759306, c/o U.S. National Bank. HINEY, Harold L. - age 73, Kansas City in Clay County, MO passed away May 22, 2001 at a VA Medical Center in Kansas City. Lon Todd McKinnis
McKINNIS, Lon Todd - Age 50, a long time resident of Riddle, Oregon, passed away at home on May 21, 2001. He was born September 9, 1950 in Silverton, Oregon to Richard (Dick) and Chloe (Davidson) McKinnis. Todd is survived by his wife Sandra; their children Brian Belcher and wife Ruth, Lettie McKinnis, Amy Jensen and husband Thayne; grandchildren Sarena, Nathaniel, Daniel and Tylin. Also surviving are his parents Dick and Chloe McKinnis; a sister Nadine Nicholson; his niece Staci Skillet and husband Brian; two great-nieces Cori and Alyssa and many other loving family members. Todd graduated from South Umpqua High in Myrtle Creek, Oregon class of 1968. He served in the United States Navy, worked at Hanna Nickel and most recently at Dammash State Hospital. Todd enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping, especially with family an friends, and long drives in the country with his wife. Memorial services will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, May 26, 2001 at the Canyonville Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 714 Frontage Road; Canyonville, Oregon. Mack A. Pyle
PYLE, Mack A. - 80, of Roseburg, entered rest Tuesday, May 22, 2001, passing away in a local care center. He was born October 10, 1920 in Healdsburg, California to Welcome and Mabel (Prescott) Pyle. Mack graduated from Roseburg High School. He enlisted in the Navy and was stationed on the USS Nevada, which was in Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked. Returning to Roseburg, Mack began Nelson and Pyle Woodworking Company and was still active until his recent illness. On September 3, 1968 in Reno, NV he married Iris L. Johnson who preceded him in death October 3, 1999. Mack was very active with his family and loved anything to do with the outdoors including fishing, camping, hunting and raising a garden. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and Ducks Unlimited. He is survived by his children Steve and Dayle Pyle, Robert and Sharon Pyle, Bruce and Susan Pyle, Pam and Larry Burr all of Roseburg, Bob and Jane Johnson of Bandon, Shirley, Jim Helwig of Golden Valley, AZ and Tom Johnson of Ft. Mohave, AZ; a special companion, his fox terrier Beau; grandchildren Scott, Matt, Stacey, Bryan, Lindsay, McCoy, Philip, Jon, Melinda, Shelley, Amy, James and Stephanie; six great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters William and Marion Pyle of Roseburg, Dorothy and Jack Keller of Cottage Grove and Holly Spencer of Florida. A graveside memorial service will be held Friday, May 25, 2001 at 10 a.m. in Roseburg Memorial Gardens. Chaplain Jim Osborne will officiate. Geraldine Mae Russell
RUSSELL, Geraldine Mae - better known as Grandma Jerri, age 75, of Glendale, passed away May 19, 2001, at her home. She was born March 20, 1926 in Detroit, Michigan to Harry S. and Charlotte (Aten) Hadden. She had moved to Glendale in November of 2000 from Anaheim, California to be with her daughter. Grandma Jerri loved to watch all sports, did not care at all what is was. She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting. Survivors include her children, daughter Lisa Green of Glendale, Oregon; sons Joseph Elmer Green of Grants Pass, Oregon and Danford Manning Green of Riverside, California; her mother Charlotte of Saint Claire, Michigan; granddaughter Joneal Nicole Bartholomew and grandson Joseph Cody Green of Glendale, Oregon. James Edwin Stearns Jr.
STEARNS Jr., James Edwin - age 80, of Sutherlin, passed away Saturday, May 19, at a hospice care home in Roseburg. He was born to James Edwin and Harriet (Purdy) Stearns on August 15, 1920 in Oakland, Oregon. He graduated from Oakland High and attended college at the University of Oregon and Oregon State College. On March 20, 1942 he married his high school sweetheart, Opal Cole. He served his country as an officer in the Army Engineer Corp. in both the European and Pacific theaters. After his army service he graduated from Oregon State College and accepted employment with General Electric in Schenectady, New York. He worked there as a requisition agent in steam turbines for several years before returning to Oakland where he bought the ranch that had belonged to his grandfather. He raised sheep and cattle and worked for the Oakland Post Office as a mail carrier. He retired in 1985. In 1993, he sold the ranch and moved to Sutherlin. Among Jim's hobbies were golfing, fishing, photography, woodworking, and farming. His unquestioned faith in the Lord has been an inspiration to many and he served in many positions in his church. He was a devoted husband and father and is survived by his wife of almost 60 years Opal Stearns; daughters Kathy Lamoreaux and husband Jon of Silverton, Linda Hamm and husband Phil of Hermiston and Annie Frost of Sutherlin; brothers Fay and Bob and sister-in-law Louise of Oakland. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Jonathan and Jeffrey Lamoreaux, Bethany, Jacque and Gregory Hamm, and Samantha, DJ and Colton Frost and many friends and relatives. Private cremation rites have been held and a memorial service will take place at the Oakland Presbyterian Church on Saturday, May 26, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Sally Weber officiating. Memorial contributions may be made in Jim's memory to Hospice Care or Oakland Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund and may be left at the service. Patsy J. Tigard
TIGARD, Patsy J. - 67, of Sutherlin, passed away Sunday, May 20, 2001, at her home. She was born December 7, 1933 in Yonkers, Oklahoma to Walter and Agness (Crabtree) Young. Patsy grew up and attended school in Oklahoma and in her early 20's, she moved to California. On June 6, 1957 in Martinez, CA, she married James Tigard. Patsy enjoyed caring for her home, sewing and reading. Being outdoors was a favorite pastime of her and James, often camping and fishing. She was a member of Garden Valley Christian Assembly Church. She is survived by her husband James Tigard; daughters Cindy Butts and her husband, Roy of Roseburg and Tamara Tigard; grandson Ryan Gill and a sister Mary Claxton of California. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Ralph Young. A private family gathering has been held. Cremation was under the care of WILSON'S CHAPEL OF THE ROSES FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY.
