Barbara Jean Fehling
FEHLING, Barbara Jean - Age 55, Fairmont, passed away Friday evening at her residence. She was born on November 9, 1944 in Houston, Texas to Marion and Johanna (Rao) Moore. She graduated from high school in Houston and attended business college for 2 years. She and Don Moore were married in 1963, and then moved to Gold Creek, MT. They later divorced. She moved to Roseburg, Oregon, where she was a waitress for many years. She was an active member of the Church of the Nazarene while in Roseburg. She and and Chuck Fehling were married in 1994. They moved to Fairmont in October of 1999. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church. She was an adventuresome spirit who loved traveling, bicycling, para sailing, sky diving and trying any new or unusual food. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband Chuck of Fairmont, daughter and son-in-law Paula and Wade Green of Helena, MT, daughters Karmen Moore of Eugene, Oregon, Bobbi Jo Forbes of Meridian, Idaho, and Barbara Jean Fehling of Dovray, MN. Grandchildren Sky and Page Green and Lauren K. Fehling. There will be no visitation in the LONGFELLOW FINNEGAN FUNERAL HOME. Visitation will be in the Assembly of God Church on Tuesday from noon until the service at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Melrose Cemetery in Roseburg, Oregon.

Marilyn Lee Johnson
JOHNSON, Marilyn Lee - age 60, of Roseburg, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, at her home surrounded by her family. Marilyn was born November 7, 1939 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Murray and Irene Mclaughlin. She lived most of her life in Michigan, moving to Oregon in 1988 after falling in love with the state while visiting her daughter. She enjoyed fishing, camping, boating and most any activity involving the outdoors. She was particularly drawn by the beauty of the ocean and loved walking along the scenic beaches of the Oregon Coastline. She will be remembered by family and friends as a caring and loving sister, daughter, mother and grandmother. She was a member of St. George's Episcopal Church, Roseburg. Surviving are her mother, Irene McLaughlin of Melvindale, Michigan, four daughters; LouAnn Dewater of Coos Bay, Oregon, Sheila DiAngelo of Melvindale, Michigan, Laura Fisher of Brighton, Michigan, Diane Johnson of Concord, California, two sisters; Evelyn Bryant of Roseburg, Susan Showler of Grosseile, Michigan, a brother Murray McLaughlin Jr., of Altmont Springs, Florida. She was preceded in death by her father in 1968, and a son, Eric Johnson, last year. Memorial Services will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, April 12th, at St. George's Episcopal Church, Roseburg. Rev. Charlotte A. Woods
WOODS, Charlotte A. - Passed away from life to enter into heaven on April 7, 2000 at the age of 62. She was surrounded by loved ones at the time of her passing. Born on June 10, 1937 in Tyler, TX to Clarence Alton Tate and Lorene (Vernon) Tate. Her parents later divorced and her mother married Jim McCall. They moved the family to Oregon, first living in the Staton area and then later moving to Cottage Grove. Charlotte attended elementary through high school in Cottage Grove. After high school, Charlotte had various jobs and lived in various area. She later married Robert Woods and to them was born their daughter Dana. After Robert retired from the Navy, they moved back to Cottage Grove. At the age of 42, Charlotte decided to attend college in the field of nursing. Starting her education at Lane Community College and graduating from Umpqua Community College. Charlotte worked in various areas of nursing in the Roseburg area, which included different nursing homes, Douglas County Jail, and home health. She had divorced Robert in 1983 and met the love of her life Bruce Briggs in 1989. Her hobbies included crocheting, knitting, sewing, cooking new recipes, and how she loved to walk on the beach. Charlotte was blessed with three special little angels that would bring a smile to her face and a twinkle to her eyes. These angels (grandchildren) held their granny close in their little hearts and will always keep that special spot for her. Even though granny isn't here with them, they know she is looking down from heaven and being their guardian angel. Charlotte was a friend, a mother, a granny, and will be missed by all who knew her. Charlotte is survived by the love of her life, Bruce Briggs of Roseburg; daughter and son-in-law, Dana and Eddie Garza of Roseburg; grandchildren, Shawnee, Garak, and Presley Garza of Roseburg; sister and brother-in-law, Charon White and Jessie Falls of Roseburg; mother, Lorene McCall of Cottage Grove; half-brother and sister-in-law, Brent and Eileen McCall of Cottage Grove; half-brother, Grady Lee Vaughn of Baleh Springs, TX; four aunts, who are from Texas; numerous cousins, two nieces, and three nephews by her sister; three nieces and nephews by her half-brother Brent; and numerous great nieces and nephews. Charlotte was preceded in death by her father, Clarence Tate and step-father, Jim McCall. A memorial will be held Wednesday, April 12, 2000 at 1:00 p.m. at Long & Shukle Memorial Chapel, officiating will be Les Albjerg. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to Mercy Hospice, Roseburg, in Charlotte's name would be appreciated.

James "Jim" P. Cookman
COOKMAN, James "Jim" P. - Age 73 of Azalea passed away April 7, 2000 at his home. James was born February 1, 1927 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Edward and Myrtle (Marsh) Cookman. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy. On February 3, 1951 in San Francisco, California he married Mary Finney. Jim was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Glendale, Oregon. He very much enjoyed telling good jokes to his family and friends. His hobbies were camping and fishing and reading a good book. Family members that survive him are his wife, Mary Cookman of Azalea, Oregon; four sons and daughters-in-law, Edward and Ann Cookman of Portland, Oregon, Evan Cookman of Azalea, Oregon, Eric and Cory Cookman of Sand Point, Idaho and Ellis and Janean Cookman of Portland, Oregon. A half brother and half sister preceded him in death. A memorial mass will be held Saturday, April 15, 2000 at 1:00 PM at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Glendale, Oregon with father Bill Ryan officiating. A pot luck gathering will be held April 16, 2000 at 1:00PM at the Community Center on Upper Cow Creek to remember Jim's life and talk over old memories. The family suggests those who will send flowers send living flowers so that they may be planted and remain alive in his memory. For those who would like to make monetary contribution. Delores Marie Krogel
KROGEL, Delores Marie - 73, of Roseburg, passed away Saturday, April 8, 2000, in a local care center. She was born November 9, 1926 in Dillard, Oregon to Ruben B. and Elizabeth M. (Trimberger) Spackman. Delores graduated from Roseburg High School in 1943. During WW II she worked for the Defense Department in San Francisco, California. She worked for a short time as a model in New York. In March 1950 she married Donald Krogel. The Krogel's worked during the summer commercial fishing in Alaska from 1980 until 1993. Delores enjoyed gardening, fishing, reading, hiking, sewing and volunteering at the Friendly Kitchen and Fish. She is a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Survivors include her daughters Debbie Rowland and her husband Steve of Palmer, Alaska, Janet Miller and her husband Scott of Roseburg, Kathy Hoffer and her husband Kelly of Loomis, California and Connie Atton of Crescent City, California; son Ron Krogel and his wife Loyce of Roseburg; sisters Terry Spenst and Rosemary Spires and her husband Denny; brother Jim Spackman and his wife Betty all of Roseburg; grandchildren Stacey Tumlinson and her husband Brian, Josh Miller, Garrett Atton, Brad and Brian Gardiner, Isaac, Jason, Andrew and Anne Marie Rowland, Kristen and Keith Krogel and Luke Floch; great grandchildren Stephen Van Norman and Hunter Tomlinson; numerous nieces and nephews. Maurice Woodford Williams
WILLIAMS, Maurice Woodford - 87, of Roseburg, passed away Sunday, April 9, 2000, at his home. He was born December 22, 1912 in Grants Pass, Oregon to a Medford, Oregon pioneer family. Frederick A. and Jane H. (Woodford) Williams. Mr. Williams grew up in Medford, Oregon and then finished school in Burlingame, California. He traveled all over the world several times while working for an airline company. Mr. Williams served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII as an Air Transportation Technician. On November 13, 1948 in Portland, Oregon he married Emma Ruth Cramer. Mr. Williams worked for United Air Lines from 1946 until he retired in 1975 as a Staff Manager in flight operations. In 1975 the Williams' moved to Ashland, Oregon and to Roseburg in 1992. Mr. Williams enjoyed gardening, traveling, music, going to the ocean and reading. The Williams' alternated attending churches between St. George's Episcopal Church and Faith Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife Emma Ruth Williams of Roseburg, Oregon; sons Kevin W. Williams of Virginia and Geoffry K. Williams and his wife Lisa of Janesville, California; grandsons Jaren and Michael Williams of Janesville, California. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, April 12, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. at Linus Oaks, 2665 Van Pelt Blvd, Roseburg, OR 97470. Father Sherman Hesselgrave of St. George's Episcopal Church and Pastor Ray Venghaus of Faith Lutheran Church will officiate. Private cremation rites have been held. Frances T. Hazzard
HAZZARD, Frances. T. - 90, formerly of North Bend, passed away on Tuesday, June 12, 2001 at her residence in Roseburg. She was born on Friday, May 19, 1911 at Stark, Montana to Franz and Jessie (Dickson) Proebstel. Frances was playing basketball when she met her husband to be. He was the referee of the game and after she fouled out of the game she refused to go on a date with him because of it. Eventually in January 1929 in Montana she married Howard Hazzard, who preceded her in death on February 10, 1987. Frances and Howard moved to North Bend in 1945. Frances helped Howard with the bookwork for his business, North Bend Garage. Frances enjoyed fishing, ceramics, crocheting, hunting deer and traveling. She made the best pecan pie and jams. After Howard retired they rebuilt player pianos. Frances is survived by six daughters and their husbands: Donna and Robert Peterson of North Bend, Jessie and Kenneth Glass, of Winchester, OR, Beverly and Dennis Hansen of North Bend, Barbara and Butch Hein of Vancouver, Washington, Mary and Bill Marquess of Eugene, Charlene and Terry Stahel of Silverton, Oregon, 16 grand children, 22 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren, two sisters Irma Isaac and Emily Burns both of Missoula, MT, numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2001 at 11:00 am at Stanton Park in Canyonville. Donald Pankey
PANKEY, Donald - age 88, of Dry Creek, passed away on Tuesday, June 12, 2001 at his residence. He was born on Thursday, September 26, 1912 in Roseburg, Oregon to Augustus and Mary Alice (Roberts) Pankey. Don began working in the woods when he was a teenager. He was falling timber when he married Ula Rodgers in Roseburg on June 6, 1936. Sometime in the 1940's he started his own logging company, Pankey Logging which he operated until 1968. During those logging years Don also ranched and raised sheep. He and Ula had a truck garden and they raised and sold cantaloupes, prunes and strawberries. Don loved the woods where he could hunt and run hound dogs. He also fished but only to fill the time between hunting trips. The worst day hunting was better by far than the best fishing. Don is survived by his wife of 65 years Ula Pankey of Dry Creek, a son Don R. Pankey of Salt Lake City, Utah, 10 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and one great great grandchild, numerous nieces and nephews. Long time friends Ray and Mary Argo. Don was preceded in death by a sister, three brothers and a daughter, Shirley Pankey who died on February 24, 1996. Graveside services will be held on Monday, June 18, 2001 at 11:00 am at the Cleveland Hill Cemetery. Services are in the care of WILSON's CHAPEL OF THE ROSES.

Robert H. Young
YOUNG, Robert H. - A memorial service will be held June 23, 2001 at 11:00 A.M. in the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit in Sutherlin for Robert who passed away on May 12, 2001. The family request that donations in his memory be made to the Church Memorial Fund or to the charity of your choice. The address for the church is 120 S.E. Umatilla. Mark L. Hanna
HANNA, Mark Lewis - Age 78 of Roseburg, passed on Wednesday, May 31, 2K at Mercy First Care Unit. Mark was born July 28th, 1921 in Oakland, Oregon to Charles (Fred ) Hanna and Sophia L. Hanna. He was in the class of 1938 at Roseburg High School. In 1940 after the death of his father, Mark and his mother moved to San Francisco. Mark was in the Merchant Marines between 1942 and 1949. He was self employed from 1950 to 1977 until he retired. In 1969 Mark and his son Bob moved back to Roseburg where from 1970 to 1977 they owned Automotive Muffler Center. Mark enjoyed driving and restoring classic cars, visiting with his many friends and relatives. Survivors include his two sons, Mark L. Hanna Jr. of California, Robert A. Hanna, daughter-in-law Cheryl A. Hanna and grandson D. Eli Hanna of Roseburg, step-children that he raised, Phyllis Gonzales, Vickie Brooks, Darrell Page and Forrest page along with their four children and grandchildren. Mark will be missed by his family and friends. He wanted no services. A celebration of his life will be set for a latter day.

EDITH M. TOZIER
TOZIER, Edith M.- age 78 of Oakland, Oregon passed away Sunday, June 4, 2000 at a Eugene hospital. She was born August 18, 1921 at North Bend, Oregon to Edward A. and Milly B. Smith. "Edie" was united in marriage to Ted Tozier on September 6, 1939 in Winchester Bay, Oregon where he worked in the woods as a logger. For many years she made their logging camps a home away from home. Edie loved fishing and hunting and killed a trophy-size mule deer. They moved from Coos River to three miles east of Sutherlin in 1946 then moved to Oakland in 1976. She was a member of the Dougco Sams since 1978. In 1999 she was preceded in death by Ted, her husband of nearly 60 years. Survivors include family in California, Montana and Oregon. A private Memorial service will be held in the Valley View Cemetery. CHAPEL OF THE FIRS is in charge of arrangements.

Leroy "Lou" O. Luedecke
LUEDECKE, Leroy O. - Age 72 of Myrtle Creek died peacefully on Thursday, April 5, 2001 at his home. Leroy was born on January 31, 1929 in Orange Grove, Texas the son of the late Reinhold and Annie (Puhlman) Lued ecke. He grew up in the Seguin, Texas where he later graduated from high school. In 1947 he joined the Marine Corps initially serving in the occupational forces in Japan after World War II. On January 31, 1958 he was united in marriage to Dorothy Acri in Los Angeles, California. Deciding to make the Marine Corp his career, Lou served in the Korean War and also the Vietnam War. He served primarily in air craft mechanics at various Naval and Marine Corps air stations, ultimately achieving the position of chief of maintenance and was also appointed as the senior maintenance instructor for VMF 21 while at El Toro, Marine Corps Air Station. He officially retired from the Corps in 1975, having attained the rank of gunnery sergeant. Upon retirement the Luedeckes moved to Douglas County, where Lou took employment as a night watchman for Roseburg Lumber, working there more than 15 years. He retired from the mill in 1987. He will be remembered by family and friends as a straight forward and honest man, giving of himself and never expecting anything in return. He enjoyed working in his garden. Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Dorothy; two daughters, Kathy (Paul) Treglown, Corvallis, Oregon; Gale (Dave) Gibson-Wright, Buena Park, California; a son, Mark Luedecke, Springfield, Oregon; four grandsons; four great-grandsons and two sisters, Adoline "Ann" (Fred) Farrell, Sutherlin and Norma (Dewitt) Odom, Seguin, Texas. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Graveside memorial services with full military honors performed by the Marine Corps are planned at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 23rd at the Roseburg Veterans Cemetery. Juanita Singleton
SINGLETON, Elsie Juanita - Went to be with the Lord on Monday, April 9, 2001. Juanita was born on Saturday, March 29, 1919 at Longmont, Colorado to Claude Clark and Elsie (Harris) Osborne. She moved to Oregon at the age of 10 with her parents and brother Wayne. Juanita graduated from Wilbur High School in 1937. She was united in marriage to William (Bill) Singleton on June 21, 1940 in Virginia City, Nevada. Juanita was dearly loved by her family and will be missed by all. She was a member of the First Christian Church. She enjoyed her family, gardening, fishing and hunting. Juanita is survived by her husband, Bill of Roseburg; daughters Phyllis Singleton of Moab, Utah, and Sharon Polley of Roseburg; a son, Lorris Singleton of Roseburg, a brother, Wayne Osborne of Central Point, Oregon; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Juanita was preceded in death by her parents and an infant daughter, Carol Jean in 1957. Visitation will be held this evening from 4 until 8 p.m. at Wilson's Chapel of the Roses. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, April 11, 2001 at 2 p.m. at the Oak Creek Cemetery. Wayne Osborne will officiate. The family would like to thank Mercy Hospice for their help and care. Lucille C. Hopper
HOPPER, Lucille C. - 82 years of age, of Roseburg, passed away April 9, 2001 at a local foster care home. She was born Lucille Cornelia Willey on March 26, 1919 in Grangeville, Idaho to Wilber and Roxey (Huntley) Willey. Lucille married Lloyd B. Hopper on April 20, 1938 in Grangeville, Idaho. They raised three daughters and two sons. She and her family moved from Baker, Oregon to the Glide area in 1946. Lucille is survived by her daughters, Donna Ervin of Roseburg, Albina and her husband Jay Hansen of Roseburg, LaRena and her husband Ted Crowley of Klamath Falls; sons, Eugene Hopper of Reno, Nevada and LeRoy Hopper of Glide; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Gladys Simpson of Phoenix, Arizona, Hazel and husband Bob Kilpatrick of Riggens, Idaho, Mildred and her husband Harland Mendenhall of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, Leona and husband Richard Bowman of Pocatello, Idaho and brother Burton and wife LaVerne Willey of Kaimah, Idaho. Lucille was preceded in death by her husband Lloyd in 1994, grandson Eugene Hopper, Jr, brothers, Roy "Sonny" Willey and Norman Willey, sisters; Juanita Willey and Dorothy Myers and her parents. Donald Francis Kirk
KIRK, Donald Francis - 71 years of age, passed away Sunday, April 8, 2001 at a local hospital. He was born Donald Francis Kirk, Tuesday, November 19, 1929 at Klamath Agency, Oregon to Rebecca (Orr) and Francis G. Kirk. Donald moved to Roseburg two and a half years ago from Klamath Falls, Oregon. He loved being in the outdoors, fishing and camping-living at the Klamath Marsh. He enjoyed being with his nieces and nephews. In his younger years he cowboyed and he lived his life in the traditional native way. To all of his friends he was known as "Bear". He served with pride in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was also an honorary member of the First Division of the Marine Corp, fighting on the front lines during the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his sister Barbara Kirk of Chiloquin, Oregon; five nieces; five nephews; six great-nieces; nine great-nephews and four great-great-nephews. Donald was preceded in death by his brother Robert Kirk, sister Ruth Kirk, great nephew Charles Kalama Kirk and his parents. There will be a Memorial Service, Saturday, April 14, 2001 at 11 a.m., at the Williamson River Indian Mission, Chiloquin. Lunch will be served after the service. The family asks, in lieu of flowers, that memorial contributions be given to Rose Haven Nursing Center, 740 NW Hill Avenue, Roseburg. Private cremation was held under the care of WILSON'S Chapel of the Roses Funeral Home and Crematory.

Donald Howard Wheatley
WHEATLEY, Donald Howard - 77 of Sutherlin passed away Sunday, April 8, 2001 in a Roseburg hospital. He was born August 19, 1923 in Brighton, Colorado to Howard D. and Violet F. (Hatfield) Wheatley. Mr. Wheatley served in the US Marine Corps during World War II and in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. On October 12, 1944 in Vancouver, Washington he married Shirley J. Freeson. The Wheatleys moved from Portland, Oregon to the Sutherlin area in 1958. He worked in maintenance for Martin Box Lumber until they closed. Mr. Wheatley worked in maintenance with the Sutherlin School District and at the Oakland Dump for several years. He enjoyed collecting baseball cards, camping with his family, fishing and doing jigsaw puzzles. He was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Sutherlin. Survivors include his wife Shirley J. Wheatley of Sutherlin; a daughter Lola L. Rasmussen and her husband Dwayne of Auburn, Washington; his son Ronald W. Wheatley and his wife Shirley of Portland, Oregon; sisters Betty M. Falk of Central Point, Oregon, Pearl O. Phillip of Portland, Oregon and Wanda Nadean of Medford, Oregon; brothers William Wheatley of Central Point, Oregon, Larry Wheatley of Salem, Oregon and Jerry Wheatley of Portland, Oregon and his grandchildren Darla, Michelle and Jamey Rasmussen and Ronald, Nina and Violet Wheatley. Mr. Wheatley was preceded in death by a son James H. Wheatley in 1975. Memorial services will be held Saturday, April 14, 2001 at 1 p.m. in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Sutherlin. THOMAS B. HASELIP
HASELIP, Thomas B.- passed away peacefully at home in Myrtle Creek, Oregon April 11, 2000. He was born in Miami, Oklahoma January 24, 1945 to Fred and Grace Haselip. After finishing school Thomas served his country in Vietnam in the United States Army. Upon returning home he studied and prepared for work as an ordained minister. He ministered in Full Gospel Churches throughout the country for over 20 years. Thomas is survived by his wife Ann and his mother Grace Haselip at the family home in Myrtle Creek. He is also survived by sisters Shirley Hannon of Brookings, Oregon and Barbara Mcnutt of Cedar Hills, Texas and brothers Carl, Richard, and Bruce all of Myrtle Creek, Oregon. He was preceded in death by his sister Ellen Hoyt. Visitations for family and friends will be held Friday April 14, 2000 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. at the Myrtle Creek Family Funeral Home Chapel. EDGMON, Rebia Nelly - Age 73, a resident of Myrtle Creek, passed away Wednesday April 11, 2001 at a local hospital. She was born November 8, 1927 in Longview, Texas to parents M.C. and Lula (Beard) Farrell. She was united in marriage May 30, 1944 in Hawthorne, Nevada to Leo Edgmon who preceded her in death March 19, 2001. They moved to the Coquille Valley in 1947 and in 1973 to Myrtle Creek. Rebia loved knitting, crocheting, camping and being with her family and friends. She will be missed by all. Survivors include daughters and son-in-laws Mary and Roger Prince of Riddle, Oregon, Sharon and Gene Coleman of Wichita, Kansas and Suzi and Mike Riley of Coos Bay, Oregon; her son Lee Edgmon of Myrtle Creek, Oregon; sisters and brother-in-laws, Ruby Standridge of Dallas, Oregon, Ruth and Dan Jones of Cresent City, California and Nona and Don Milligan of McMinnville, Oregon; brother Marion Claude Farrell of Myrtle Creek, Oregon; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her parents and sister Betty Gregorson. She will be laid to rest beside Leo at Myrtle Crest Memorial Gardens in Coquille on Saturday, April 14, 2001 at 1 p.m. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Taylor's Family Mortuary in Winston.

Eva June Robertson
ROBERTSON, Eva June - 71, a resident of Myrtle Creek died Thursday afternoon, April 12, 2001 in Myrtle Creek at the age of 71. Mrs. Robertson was born Eva June Elliott at Milton, Oklahoma on June 10, 1929. During World War II she moved with her mother to California. At the age of 17 she married Billie Jr. Robertson on July 25, 1946 at Kerman, California. She first settled in Myrtle Creek, Oregon with her husband and two young daughters. Her third daughter was born in Myrtle Creek. In 1952 the family moved back to California. She and her husband loved Oregon and after he retired they returned to Oregon in 1979. Mr. and Mrs. Robertson settled in Myrtle Creek in 1995. Survivors include her daughters Carol J. Robertson Bispham, Linda Robertson Landis and Deborah Robertson Heinisch; five granddaughters and three grandsons Lorraine Sarich, Julie Marie Krussow, Kenneth Weinreber, Patrick Weinreber, Donnald Heinisch, Christina Tull, Lena Heinisch Wiggins and Levretha Robertson;10 great-grandsons and six great-granddaughters for a total of 16 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 14, 2001 at MOUNTAIN VIEW MEMORIAL CHAPEL at Myrtle Creek with Pastor Vance Culpepper officiating. Interment will be in the Riddle Cemetery.

Maureen Julia Batman
BATMAN, Maureen Julia - Age 88 of Sutherlin, Oregon, died April 11, 2001 at a Roseburg Care home. Maureen was born April 16, 1912 at Madison, Wisconsin to John and Julia Selmour. Survivors include three sons, Charles Sr. (Deb) of Reedsport, Jerome (Shirley) Batman of Winston, Michael (Vanita) Batman of Roseburg; two daughters Peggy Willis of Klamath Falls and Nancy Laswell of Portland; 13 grandchildren and their children. Maureen grew up in the Klamath Falls area, along with three sisters and two brothers. Maureen was preceded in death by her husband, Charles (C.W.), three sisters, one brother, and one grandson. At her request no services are to be held.

Evelyn Marie Keith
KEITH, Evelyn M.- Age 84 of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away April 12, 2001 in a Roseburg hospital. She was born June 27, 1916 in Girard, Kansas to Frank and Albertina (Graby) Duggan who preceded her in death. Her husband Lewis A. Keith also preceded her in death. Howard Newton
NEWTON, Howard - Age 86, of Sullivan, Illinois, died March 11, 2001 in the Carle Hospital, Urbana, Illinois. Howard was born August 23, 1914 in Pontoosuc, Illinois, the son of Leslie and Virginia Owings Newton. He married Juanita Irene Kiesow in 1937, and they enjoyed 63 years of marriage. Howard moved his family to Winston, Oregon in 1947. He worked at E. K. Woods, and he and Juanita had a peach orchard and fruit stand. Howard established Howard Newton Excavating and was an estimator for underground utility construction in Oregon and Washington. Howard and Juanita also lived in the Tigard and Beaverton areas in the 80's and 90's. In 1995, after several years of retirement, they moved to the Illinois Masonic Home in Sullivan, Illinois. Howard was a charter member of the Winston Christian Church and later a member of the Singing Hills Christian Church in Hillsboro. He was a member of the Denver, Illinois Masonic Lodge No. 464 A.F.&A.M. Surviving are his wife, Juanita at the Illinois Masonic Home in Sullivan, son, Frederick H. Newton and daughter-in-law, Merry of Surprise, Arizona, daughter, Colene Freadman and son-in-law, Alex of Winston, Oregon, brother, Mahlon Newton of Burnside, Illinois, sister, Laura Bullard of Schaumberg, Illinois, grandchildren, Jeanna Morris and husband, Ryan of Bloomington, Illinois, Debbie Stumpf and husband, Jerry of Woodburn, Oregon, Wesley Freadman and wife, Robin, and a great-granddaughter, Maggie Freadman of Tualatin, Oregon, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter and two brothers. Funeral services were held in the Sullivan Illinois Masonic Home Chapel on March 14th. Graveside services were held on March 15th at the Meyer's Cemetery in rural Dallas City, Illinois. Memorials are suggested to the Meyer's Cemetery Maintenance Memorial Fund c/o Valera Zern, 2410 N. Viola Florence Johnson
JOHNSON, Viola Florence - Age 87, of Roseburg, passed away on Friday, April 13, 2001 at a local foster home. She was born at Neola, Iowa on January 31, 1914 to Robert L. and Myrtle F Baker. On May 12, 1932 in Logan, Iowa she married William "Ted" H. Johnson, who preceded her in death on April 30, 1997. Mrs. Johnson first came to Oregon in 1936 and moved to Roseburg in 1938. In 1952 she was the second woman hired at Roseburg Lumber Plant #1, she worked there until 1963. In 1967 she and Ted moved to Montana where she operated a lumber mill until 1975 when they retired and came back to Roseburg. Viola is survived by her children, Alberta Moore, Bill Johnson and his wife Donna, Wanda Watson and her husband Bob all of Roseburg, Nora Mae Simmons and her husband Clyde of Port Orford, OR, and Darrell Johnson and his wife Betty of Glendale, AZ.; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Viola was also preceded in death by her parents, a brother, a son Chester, a granddaughter Ramona, a grandson Dean and a great-grandson Josh. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, April 18, 2001 at 2 p.m. at Roseburg Memorial Gardens. Pastor Steve Diaz will officiate. LONG & SHUKLE MEMORIAL CHAPEL is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Frances Carnes
CARNES, Mary Frances - 83, of Elkton, passed away Saturday, April 14, 2001, in a Eugene hospital. She was born October 31, 1917 in Drain, Oregon to Lonor and Nettie (McNeil) Compton. On December 18, 1938, in Roseburg, she married Howard Carnes. Howard and Frances moved to Elkton in 1944 to the ranch where the family still resides. Frances was a member of the Elkton Christian Church, Rebekah Lodge and the Kellogg Grange. She had many creative hobbies including sewing, quilting, rock picking, ceramics and jewelry making. Survivors include her daughter, Lois Russell of Elkton; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Frances was preceded in death by her son, James, in 1994 and her husband, Howard, in 1997. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, April 18, 2001 at 6 p.m. at the Elkton Christian Church. Pastor Eddie Harrod will officiate. Private cremation rites have been held. Private inurnment will take place in the Scottsburg Cemetery. CHAPEL OF THE FIRS is in charge of arrangements.

Frederick C. Holzmeyer
HOLZMEYER, Frederick C. - 73, of Roseburg, passed away April 15, 2001, at his home. He was born February 10, 1928 in Portland to Henry and May (Groth) Holzmeyer. Fred grew up and attended school in Dundee, OR and then attended Oregon State University. He served his country during World War II in the US Navy. In 1947, Fred transferred with First Interstate Bank to North Bend. It was there that he met Zella Hurst and they were married on April 15, 1948. The couple moved to Coquille in 1950 where Fred worked with Purkey Furniture. They were later able to purchase the business, renaming it Zells Furniture. Fred was a life member of the Coquille Elks and member of the Coquille Lions. In 1985 they moved to Roseburg where Fred worked with Carstens Furniture until retirement in 1995. He enjoyed fishing, was an avid reader, and loved building items for his wife and daughters around their homes. In his retirement, he enjoyed the yearly trips to Arizona. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Zella; his daughters and sons-in-law, Marcia and Randy Richardson of Bend and Marla and Arnie DeWald of Roseburg; his mother, May Holzmeyer of Newberg; sisters, Florence Bradley of Gladstone and Joan Russell and her husband C.W. of Los Angeles, CA; grandchildren, Cory and Jason Sikes, Kelly Richardson, Cody Richardson and Shane DeWald. A family gathering will be held. Private cremation was held under the care of WILSON'S CHAPEL OF THE ROSES CREMATORY. The family suggests that those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation, P.O. Box 10204, Portland, OR 97210-9998. Helen Lillian Harbaugh
HARBAUGH, Helen Lillian - Age 85, of Elkton, passed away on Friday April 14, 2000 in a Yoncalla care facility. She was born on March 13, 1915 at Wild Horse, Colorado to John and Mary (Shimich) Fredrick. Her family moved to Scio, Oregon when she was five years old. She was raised and educated in Scio. On March 4, 1933 in Portland, Oregon she married Donald R. Harbaugh. They moved to Elkton in 1950. Don passed away on February 17, 1974. Helen worked at Forest Nursery and Arlene's Restaurant in Elkton. She was a member of the Elkton Rebekah's Lodge since May 15, 1960. Helen was a good gardener. She grew vegetables and flowers. She canned fruit and vegetables. She was a good cook. She made excellent chicken and dumplings and kolach rolls. She will be greatly missed by her three children: Glen Harbaugh and wife Nancy, Ken Harbaugh and wife Shirley all of Elkton, Oregon, Donna Rice and husband Dan of Olalla, Washington, seven grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren, a sister Sylvia Seehaufer of Corvallis, Oregon. She was also preceded in death by two brothers: John and Laddy Fredrick and two sisters: Mamie Bursik and Bessey Debrosky. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 19, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. at the Elkton Christian Church. Pastor Rod Wilgus will officiate. Vault interment will follow in the Elkton Cemetery. At the family's request contributions may be made in Mrs. Harbaughs memory to the Elkton Rebekah's Lodge in lieu of flowers. CHAPEL OF THE FIRS is in charge of arrangements.
