Paul G. Elder, 82, of Turtle Creek, died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, in UPMC Shadyside. He was born June 13, 1917. He was the owner of Elder & Son Insurance Realty, president of the Turtle Creek Savings and Loan for over 40 years, a seven-time president of the Turtle Creek Rotary Club, founder of the Monroeville Rotary Club, past district governor of Rotary, the recipient of the Rotary Foundation's Meritorious Service Award, and a director of the Pennsylvania State Savings & Loan & Insurance Fund. Husband of the late Jean Mills Elder. He is survived by many cousins; and special friends, Judy and Harry McElwain of Penn Township. Friends will be received Sunday from 1 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the JOBE FUNERAL HOME, corner of Shaw and Triboro avenues, Turtle Creek, where services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. Interment Churchill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rotary Foundation or the Leukemia Association.
ROBERT GLENN HART
Robert Glenn Hart, 75, of Route 136, Finleyville, formerly of Rostraver Township, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, in Mon Valley Hospital. Mr. Hart was born in Tower Hill, Fayette County, Aug. 22, 1924, a son of the late Howard Swope and Iva Dail Coughenour Hart. He was manager for the former Zeffiro Transfer and Storage Co., Donora, and had also worked in management for Brockway Trucking Co. in Atlanta, Ga. Mr. Hart retired from the former Duffy's Truck Sales in Canonsburg. During his retirement years, he drove buses for the Mon View Mining Co. in Courtney, and the Hilltop Bus Co. in Monessen. He also was a former bus driver for the Greyhound and Blue Ridge Bus companies. Mr. Hart was an expert mechanic and enjoyed restoring his antique pickup truck. He was a longtime member of Webster United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Navy Seabees in the South Pacific Theater. He also served in the Civil Conservation Corps following the Great Depression. Mr. Hart was a former member of Rostraver Emergency Management Service and Rostraver Township Volunteer Fire Department #1 in Webster. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Helen Jugan Hart; a son, Mark A. Hart of San Jose, Calif.; a daughter, Paula L. Hart of Brooklyn, Ohio; a grandson, Robert Hart, and a granddaughter, Adrienne Hart, both of Arizona; a brother, James K. Hart of Webster; three sisters, Mrs. James (June H.) Beveridge of Webster, Mrs. Frank (Shirley A.) Rozik of Greensburg and Bonnie Hart Rozik of Webster; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Hart was preceded in death by a son, Robert Allen Hart; three brothers, Harold, William A. and Howard "Herky" Hart; and a sister, Nancy Hart Muia. Friends will be received at the JAMES A. RABE FUNERAL HOME INC., 701 Thompson Ave., Donora, Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. William C. Gawlas and the Rev. Kent Lighthall co-officiating. Burial will follow in Monongahela Cemetery, Monongahela.

Margaret I. (Shields) Jae, 78, of Depew, N.Y., formerly of Pitcairn, died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999. Wife of the late Homer F. Jae; mother of Robert S. Jae of Spotsylvania, Va., and Sharon Gravelle of Spring City, Pa.; and sister of Geraldine Bish of Stoneboro, Pa., Hulda Spicker of North Huntingdon and Bernard Shields of Oklahoma. Also survived by four grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Friends received Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the WM. O. PAUL DON MAHONEY
Paul Don Mahoney, 75, of Mt. Lebanon and Bethany Beach, Del., died suddenly on Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, in Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh, Uptown. He is survived by Edna M. Mahoney, his cherished and devoted wife and best friend of 51 years. Additionally, Don leaves behind four children, Carol Haverty of California, Donald Mahoney of Butler, Patricia Slusser of Columbus, Ohio, and James Mahoney of Alexandria, Va.; 10 grandchildren, Erica, Jessica, Katie, Blair, Conor, Dustin, Eileen, Kristin, Michael and Alec; brother of William James Mahoney; also numerous friends and other relatives. Don was preceded in this life by his parents, William Paul and Claire Koerber Mahoney; a brother, William Paul; and a grandson, Travis. Mr. Mahoney was a graduate of Carrick High School and the University of Pittsburgh, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a fighter pilot, and remained an active reservist until 1950. He was a lifetime member of the VFW in Ocean View, Del. Don maintained his private aviator status in later years, and was the owner/pilot of Mary I, Mary II and Mary III, and a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. He was a respected business and community leader. Don was CEO and owner of Transmission Equipment Co. of Pittsburgh, Johnstown, Warren, Ohio, and Kenova, W.Va. He served on the board of directors of the Iron and Glass Bank of Pittsburgh. He was a founding member and past president of the Power Transmission Distributors Association, a member of the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers and a charter member of the Allegheny Club of Pittsburgh. Mr. Mahoney was a member of St. John Capistran Catholic Church, Upper St. Clair, and St. Ann's Catholic Church of Bethany Beach, Del. His family and friends are heartbroken by the sudden and untimely loss of their cherished Don. He touched the lives of everyone who knew him with his kind and gentle spirit. His wife, Edna, will carry on his legacy with the spirit of her best friend by her side. HELEN L. NICHOLSON
Helen L. Nicholson, 87, of Connellsville RD2, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, in the Highlands Hospital, Connellsville. She was born Oct. 6, 1912, in Adelaide, Dunbar Township, a daughter of the late John and Helen Dolpsak Durkat. Helen was a lifelong resident of Connellsville and was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and homemaker. She had attended St. Stephen's Byzantine Catholic Church in Leisenring. She is survived by four sons, Kenneth Eugene Nicholson and his wife, Betty, of Hermitage, Tenn., Robert Nicholson of Monarch, Ronald Nicholson and his wife, Shirley, of Youngstown, Ohio, and Gerald Nicholson and his wife, Sylvia, of Connellsville; a daughter, Mary Saylor and her husband, Frank, of Connellsville; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Catherine Lynn of Marion, Ohio, Peggy Dykun of Rochester, Pa., Esther Logsdon of Holley, N.Y., and Ann Krzysiak of Uniontown. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Alfred Nicholson, on July 4, 1998; two brothers, Charles and John Durkat; and a sister, Mary Durkat. Ruby Laverne Nicholson, 63, of Mill Run, died suddenly Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, at her home. She was born Jan. 4, 1936, in Sugarloaf, a daughter of the late Thomas Lincoln and Evelyn Hall Lytle. Ruby was a graduate of the former South Union High School with the class of 1954. She was a member of the Sugarloaf Church, and also attended the Millertown Community Church and the Indian Creek Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Virgil D. Nicholson; a son, Gerald "Jerry" Nicholson of Melcroft; three daughters, Sandra Rank and her husband, Stephen, of Mill Run, Linda Bottomley and her husband, William, also of Mill Run and Sharon Etling and her husband, Jeffery, of Connellsville; three grandchildren, Melinda Bottomley of Mill Run, Tammi Barnhart of Connellsville and Haven Purbaugh of Somerset; a special niece, Diane Schrock and her husband, Brian, and their children, Adam and Ryan, of Somerset; two brothers, Wendell Lytle and his wife, Cindy, of Smithfield and David Lytle of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by four sisters, Wetona Diehl, Bethel Inks, Welda Close and Phyllis Lytle. Florence M. Ream, 82, of Normalville, formerly of Mill Run, died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, in Eichers Family Home, Normalville. She was born Aug. 15, 1917, in Confluence, a daughter of the late Thornton and Susie Ohler Rugg. She was a member of the Melcroft Assembly of God Church and the Women's Missionary at the church. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Herbert M. Ream; three brothers, Henry, Lloyd and James Rugg; and three sisters, Grace Basinger, Alice Harbaugh and Annie Williams. She is survived by two sons, Kenneth Ream and his wife, Jan, of Indiana, Pa., and Robert Ream and his wife, Linda, of Mill Run; five daughters, Jean Stull and her husband, John, of Mineral Ridge, Ohio, June Harbaugh and her husband, Ronald, of Mill Run, Shirley Hensel and her husband, Homer, of Mill Run, Lois Henry and her husband, Donald, of Normalville and Linda Henry and her husband, Lawrence, of Normalville; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a brother, Wilbert Rugg of Mill Run; and a sister, Amanda Shroyer of Berlin, Pa. Donna S. Bateman, 67, of Perryopolis RD, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at 12:10 a.m., in her home. She was born April 24, 1932, in Dayton, Ohio, a daughter of the late Clarence and Ruth Brokamp Burress. She is survived by her husband, Henry Edsel Bateman; two sons and a daughter, Bruce W. Bateman and wife, Isabel, of Grindstone RD, Michael J. Bateman and Sandy, and Mrs. Glenn (Deborah) Strother, both of Perryopolis; seven grandchildren; a great-grandson; a sister, Mrs. Gerry Jackewicz of Fresno, Calif.; and a special nephew, Ronald McDermott and wife, Barbara, of Fairborn, Ohio.
