Donald J. "Duck" Hess, 67, of Melcroft, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, in UPMC Presbyterian, Oakland. He was born March 14, 1932, in Melcroft, a son of the late Lawrence "Lefty" and Estelle Stopka Hess. He was a retired construction worker and had also been employed by Saltlick Township for several years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a member of the Donegal American Legion and VFW. He was also a member of St. Raymond of the Mountains Roman Catholic Church, Donegal. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Sterchak Hess; two sons, D.J. Hess at home and Jamie Hess and his wife, Sharon, of Irwin; a daughter, Megan Kalp and her husband, Jack, of Melcroft; and two grandchildren, Alex and Victoria Hess. Friends will be received in the CLYDE BROOKS FUNERAL HOME INC., Route 711, Melcroft, Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Raymond of the Mountains R.C. Church, Donegal, with the Rev. John Harrold as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Raymond's Cemetery, Saltlick Township.
JOHN G. AGUILAR
John G. Aguilar, a Native American Apache Indian and retired steelworker, passed away Thursday morning, Jan. 20, 2000, in Dottie's Personal Care Home, East Huntingdon Township, where he had been a resident for more than five years. John was 97 years of age, born Feb. 8, 1902, in Irapuato, Mexico, a son of the late Santee and Pompea Gonzalez Aguilar. John was a direct descendent, traced through family lineage, of the Chiricahua Apache Indian Chief Cochise (1812-1874) and Leader/Medicine Man Geronimo "Goyathlay" (1829-1909). John retired from National Tube Works in McKeesport in 1967, where he was employed for nearly 40 years as a steelworker. He was a member of the United Steelworkers Local Union #1408 in McKeesport. He was Catholic by faith. John is survived by three sons, John E. Aguilar and his wife, Sandra, of West Newton, George L. Aguilar and his wife, Linda, of Fort Worth, Texas, and Lloyd Aguilar and his wife, Terry, of Glassport; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews in the Tinnie, N.M., Mescalaro Apache Reservation. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife, Cassie Johnson Aguilar, in March 1981; and 10 brothers and sisters. Family and friends will be received at the ROBERT B. HOMER GLENN BROOME
Homer Glenn Broome, 77, of Saltsburg, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, at home. He was born Sept. 29, 1922, in McKeesport, a son of the late Harry and Lida Jobes Broome. Before his retirement in 1984, he was employed by Peoples Natural Gas Co. Mr. Broome served during World War II as an Army sergeant in the European Theatre. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 431 in Saltsburg. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Roberta Lucille "Bertie" Ryan Broome; seven children; two brothers; a sister; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. He will be missed by many dear friends and relatives. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. Friends will be received Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the KELLY L. CORRIDONI FUNERAL HOME LTD., 400 Indiana Ave., Avonmore. Masonic services will be conducted by his lodge Sunday at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home Monday, Jan. 24, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. George Rugh officiating. Blanche Evelyn Cox, 69, of Devil's Den Road, Burgettstown, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at her residence. She was born Oct. 8, 1930, in Zanesville, Ohio, a daughter of the late Ralph and Helen Haas Greene. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bertram L. Cox, in 1984; and a sister, Mary Jo Greene Chism. She is survived by a son, Charles Ernest Cox of Bulger; two brothers, Frederick Greene of Louisville, Ky., and Everett Greene of Wilmington, Del.; a sister, Janet Greene Boyden of South Zanesville, Ohio; two grandsons; a granddaughter; two nieces; and two nephews. She was a member of the Friendly Class of Weirton Heights Memorial Baptist Church, and the Order of Eastern Star #147. She was a former secretary at Weirton Heights Memorial Baptist Church. Visitation will be Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 3 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the GRECO-HERTNICK FUNERAL HOME, 3219 Main St., Weirton, W.Va. James G. Joyce, 73, formerly of Knoxville, on Friday, Jan. 21, 2000. Husband of Florence M. Joyce; father of James S., Robert J. and Michael R. Joyce; grandfather of James B., Brian J., Erin M., Jake, Jacky, Kevin and Kristin Joyce; and brother of Thomas R. and Ray P. Joyce. Ann Dorothy Rendulic, 87, of McKeesport, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000. Born in Cool Springs, Pa., Nov. 1, 1912, she was a daughter of the late Stephen and Mary Grgos Barnish. She was a member of St. Martin de Porres Parish and the Versailles Borough Chapter of the AARP. Preceded in death by her husband, Stephen P. Rendulic, she is survived by her daughters, Thelma Smith of Rostraver Township and Ann Louise Gorzynski of North Huntingdon; grandsons, Gary Gorzynski and Kevin and Brian Smith; great-grandchildren, Amanda, Daniel and Matthew Gorzynski; brothers, John Barnish of Clarksville and Edward Barnish of Carmichaels; sisters, Catherine Ferketich of McKeesport, Frances Elyes of Versailles and Rose Yeager of Pulaski, Pa.; and nieces and nephews. MARIE E. SHAFER
Marie E. Shafer, 71, of Edinburg, Ohio, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna, Ohio, after being injured in an automobile accident on S.R. 14 at Industry Road in Ravenna Township. Born May 23, 1928, in Latrobe, she was a daughter of Henry W. and Marie J. (Potter) Haase. A Ravenna, Ohio, area resident since 1951, she had resided in Edinburg for 10 years. Mrs. Shafer had been employed at Cleveland Worsted Mills in Ravenna. Survivors include her husband, Lewis, to whom she was married 52 years; son, Carl "Chris" of Mogadore, Ohio; daughter, Betty Smith of Edinburg, Ohio; two grandchildren; a great-grandchild; brothers, Ted Haase of Pennsylvania and Gerald Haase of Florida; and sisters, Geneva Shean, Dorothy Myers and Nancy Kerr, all of Pennsylvania, Emma Jean Brown of Florida and Shirley Weighman of Colorado. Her brother, Charles Haase, and sisters, Beatrice Schrack, Alice Stoffer, Henrietta and Carol Haase, died previously. FRANK E. EWING
Frank E. Ewing, 88, of Stuart, Fla., formerly of Blairsville and Pittsburgh, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at his home. A son of the late Elmer R. and Maude Bergman Ewing, he was born Aug. 24, 1911, in Livermore, Pa. Mr. Ewing was employed by the Peoples Natural Gas Company, Forbes Shop, for 33 years before retiring in 1973. He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons Infinity Lodge #546 in Penn Hills since 1947. He was raised in the Livermore and Blairsville areas. He resided in Pittsburgh from 1937 until 1993, when he and his wife moved to Stuart, Fla. Mr. Ewing is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 64 years, Nevada Davison Ewing, whom he married on April 19, 1936. Loving father of Frank Ewing and his wife, Linda, of Alpharetta, Ga., David Ewing of Elkhart, Ind., Mrs. Daniel (Margaret) Fuchs of Oakmont, Pa., and Mrs. Howard (Nancy) Duncan of Stuart, Fla. Mr. Ewing has nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Surviving also are his brother, Jay Ewing of Avonmore; and a sister, Mary H. Ewing of Blairsville. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Pete, Roy and Norman Ewing; and sisters, Carrie Dixon, Anne Wentzel, Helen Barnhart and Gladys Jones. There will be no public visitation. Services will be held in the chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Darrell D. Knopp officiating. Interment will follow in Ebenezer Cemetery, Conemaugh Township. RICHARD L.
