JOSE M. CANTELLOPS, M.D.
Jose M. "Joe" Cantellops, M.D., died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at his winter residence in Highland Beach, Fla. He and his wife, Luz Mercedes Cantero Cantellops, who survives, made their home in Whitehall, Pa. From 1955 until his retirement in 1986, he served on the senior surgical staffs of St. Margaret Memorial and St. Francis General hospitals in Pittsburgh. A highly skilled surgeon and diagnostician, Dr. Cantellops served as chief of staff at St. Margaret's for many years. Following his retirement from active practice, he began his second career as a successful artist. Born July 18, 1920, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Dr. Cantellops received his primary and secondary education at the Catholic Academy in Old San Juan. He came to Pittsburgh in 1939 to continue his studies at Duquesne University, graduating in pre-med in 1942. He and his childhood sweetheart, Luz, were married on June 6, 1943 at Holy Rosary Parish in Republic, Pa. Attending the School of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, he received his medical degree in 1948. Following his internship at St. Margaret's, and residencies at the Knickerbocker Hospital and The Cornell Group in New York City (1948-53), he served in the U.S. Air Force as Chief of Surgical Services at Randolph Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, during the Korean War (1953-55). He left the military with a rank of captain. During his career as a surgeon, he served on the executive board of the Allegheny County Medical Society. In 1979, he was elected the first president of the medical staff of St. Margaret Hospital. Since retirement, he had continued as a member of the honorary emeritus staffs of both St. Margaret's and St. Francis hospitals, as well as an emeritus member of the board of governors of the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children in Erie, Pa. During his years as a surgeon, his talent for drawing emerged. He would make drawings of his surgical procedures on the patients' charts for teaching purposes, winning him the Best Teacher Award for three consecutive years (1968-70) at St. Margaret's. When planning his retirement, Dr. Cantellops was encouraged by many friends to have his talent evaluated, which he did in 1985. His art teacher and critic, Mrs. Paula K. Bland, a well-known impressionistic painter, wrote in the Allegheny Community College newspaper, "My most memorable experience has been a student who came to me several years ago, a semi-retired surgeon from two Pittsburgh hospitals, who joined my class to realize his life-long desire to paint pictures. He then devoted his life to painting and had four one-man shows, winning numerous first place awards in various competitions." His teacher, as well as his contemporaries and art critics, were impressed by his approach to color, composition and the serenity of his landscapes and seascapes. During his extensive travels, he captured the breathtaking views of Puerto Rico, the eastern United States, and the Far East. He painted every day and his collection of paintings grew. He displayed these paintings periodically in the Cantellops Art Gallery, named in honor of him and his wife in 1996, at La Roche College in the North Hills of Pittsburgh. A student-dining hall also bears their name at the college. A member of the Board of Regents at La Roche since 1993 and membership chairman of the group, he often visited the college to interact with the Spanish-speaking students at the Pacem In Terris (Peace on Earth) Institute to help them learn the customs of this country and to serve as a mentor. He was of particular help to students from Puerto Rico, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The Cantellops created the Cantellops Endowment Fund in support of that program. In addition to his Best Teacher Awards, Dr. Cantellops was Past Master of his Masonic Lodge and an Illustrious 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, a member of the Royal Order of Jesters Pittsburgh Court #2, named Most Distinguished Alumnus of Duquesne University at commencement exercises in 1993, and also received a Lifetime Distinguished Service Award from St. Margaret Memorial Hospital that same year. In addition to his wife, Luz, he is survived by two brothers, Manuel of Atlanta, Ga., and Hugo of San Juan; and two sisters, Josephina Cantellops and Leila Cantellops, both of Miami, Fla.; and several nephews and nieces. A Memorial Mass was held Monday, Jan. 31, at St. Lucy Parish in Highland Beach, Fla. At noon Thursday, Feb. 10, a Mass will be celebrated in his memory in the Magdalen Chapel at La Roche College, 9000 Babcock Blvd., Pittsburgh. (For further information, please call 412-536-1092.) Gifts made in memory of Dr. Cantellops for the Cantellops Endowment Fund may be sent to: The Cantellops Endowment Fund, c/o La Roche College, Development Office, 9000 Babcock Blvd., Pittsburgh, PA 15237.
