Lois (Mullooly) Zyra, 71, of Turtle Creek, on Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999. She was a retired employee of USX, E.T. Works. Mother of Trudy Loughrey (wife of Robert G.) of Villanova, Pa., formerly of Mt. Lebanon, and the late Charles L. "Zero" Zyra. Sister of Jane Osman of Turtle Creek. Grandmother of C.J. Starkey, Patrick, Allison, Timothy and Ned Loughrey. CHARLES L. SAYLES
Charles L. Sayles, 74, of Elizabeth Township, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, in McKeesport Hospital. He was born June 7, 1925, in Shaner, a son of the late Burt and Pearl Fellabaum Sayles. He was a retired employee of the G.C. Murphy Co., McKeesport; a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy; and a member of the Central Highlands United Methodist Church, Elizabeth Township, and the Shaner Gun Club. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Wyman. He is survived by his wife, Clada E. Fontanesi Sayles; two sons, Gerald Sayles of Elizabeth Township and Dwayne Sales of Harrisburg; two grandchildren; three sisters, June Sellman of Elizabeth Township, Sarah Shoaf of Florida, and Alice Miller of Ohio; also nieces and nephews. FLAVIO O. DiFILIPPO
Flavio O. DiFilippo, 81, of 286 Kings Road in Kiski Township, Armstrong County, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, in the Allegheny Valley Hospital in Natrona Heights, where he had been a patient for the past month. Mr. DiFilippo was born March 13, 1918, in Frisa (Provence of Chieti), Italy, a son of the late Oreste and Filomina Mattiole DiFilippo. He came to the Apollo area in 1935 and had lived there since. In 1950, he and his wife purchased the Union House Hotel which they operated until 1972, at which time it was remodeled and renamed Flavio's, which became one of the best known restaurants in western Pennsylvania and is still in operation today. In 1960, they purchased Augustino's Restaurant in Vandergrift and operated it until 1972. He was a member of St. James Roman Catholic Church in Apollo. Mr. DiFilippo was a graduate of Michigan State University and was a member of the "Chef and Cook Association of Pittsburgh" and was distinguished by this organization by being named the "Chef of the Year" in 1988. He also earned the titles of CEC "Certified Executive Chef" and CHA "Certified Hotel Administrator" and AAC "American Academy of Chefs." He was a cook for the U.S. Army during World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his stepmother, Virginia Giardino DiLollo DiFilippo. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Angeline Donatelli DiFilippo; three sons, Oreste Flavio "Pete" DiFilippo, Pasquale Lorenzo "Patsy" DiFilippo and Denis Paul DiFilippo, all of Kiski Township; two brothers, Americo DiFilippo and Antonio DiFilippo, both of Kiski Township; a sister, Aurora Fox of Harrisburg; eight grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the CURRAN-SHAFFER FUNERAL HOME, 100 Owens View Drive in Apollo. Funeral Mass will be celebrated from St. James Roman Catholic Church, Apollo, Monday at 10 a.m. with Father Emil S. Payer and Father Ronald Simboli as concelebrants. MARY SUE (BOVINGTON) JOHNSON
Mary Sue (Bovington) Johnson, 70, of Mt. Lebanon, died peacefully at home on Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Dec. 4, 1928, to the late John R. and Helen Pettibone. She graduated from Wheaton College in Massachusetts in 1951; married C. Bayard Johnson Jr. in 1958; and settled in Pittsburgh in 1971. She is survived by her loving husband, Bayard; daughters and sons-in-law, Cam and Greg Allen of Mt. Lebanon and Gail Johnson and Tim Elgren of Clinton, N.Y.; daughter, Molly Johnson of Seattle, Wash.; son and daughter-in-law, Bayard and Karen Johnson of St. Louis, Mo.; and six grandchildren, Robby, Brad, Scott, Ruth, Ben and Bay. She is also survived by her brother, John R. Bovington of Cleveland, Ohio. She was a dedicated, active grandmother, a member of Southminster Presbyterian Church and active in numerous church and community activities, including Southminster choir, women's hand bell team and AFS student exchange. Her family gratefully acknowledges the outpouring of support throughout the past few months from friends near and far, as well as the caring guidance and support of the Family Hospice. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 13, at 9:30 a.m. at Southminster Presbyterian Church in Mt. Lebanon. Sue expressed wishes that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Southminster Presbyterian Church music program, Mt. Lebanon, Pa., the Mt. Lebanon Public Library or Family Hospice, Mt. Lebanon.
JOHN MALINAK
John Malinak, 86, of Star Junction, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, in Uniontown Hospital. He was born June 22, 1913, in Donora, a son of the late Michael and Maria Kontura Malinak. Mr. Malinak was a U.S. Army corporal of Battery D, 209th A.A.A. A.W. Battalion in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was also a member of the Perryopolis VFW Goldstar Post 7023, the Perryopolis Slovak Catholic Sokol Assembly 25, and St. John Roman Catholic Church. He is survived by two daughters and two sons, Mrs. Deborah A. Mansfield of Houston, Texas, Mrs. David (Dolores) A. Rehrig of Miami, Fla., John M. Malinak and wife, Bernadette, of Washington, Pa., and Michael A. Malinak and wife, Patricia, of Greensburg; seven grandchildren, Christine E. Mansfield of Houston, Texas, Steve D. Rehrig and Michelle L. Rehrig, both of Miami, Fla., Laura M. Malinak and Cassandra A. Malinak, both of Washington, Pa., Megan E. Malinak and Michael P. Malinak of Greensburg; and a sister, Mrs. Margaret Cherry of Anaheim, Calif. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Marie Rumancik Malinak, with whom he would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on the day of his death; an infant daughter, Anna Marie Malinak; an infant brother; and four sisters, Mrs. Mary Koskosky, Mrs. Anna Koncik, Mrs. Helen Staruch and Mary Malinak. Ernest Molnar, 78, of Shaler Township, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at the Manor Care Nursing Center, Green Tree. Born Sept. 6, 1921, in Budapest, Hungary, he was the son of the late Joseph and Maria (Badish) Molnar. He was a retired foreign language teacher in the North Hills School District. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cecelia P. (Bendzsuk) Molnar. He is survived by two daughters, Cecelia M. Kelly and Linda K. Molnar. CHARLES M. THOMPSON
Charles M. "Chip" Thompson, 93, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at the home of his daughter, Janet M. Cox, in Penn Township. Born March 18, 1906, in Liberty Borough, he was the son of the late Collian and Caroline Diehl Thompson. He retired as a postal carrier with the McKeesport Post Office. A member, former treasurer, elder, trustee and Sunday school teacher at the Liberty Borough Presbyterian Church, he was also a member of AARP and the National Association of Letter Carriers. Preceded in death by his wife, Grace Harper Thompson, in 1992, he is survived by his children, Janet M. Cox (Pete) of Penn Township and Charles M. Thompson (Stella) of Elizabeth Township; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Clara Bodnar of Versailles Borough and Florence "Honey" Winwood of Greeneville, Tenn.; and nieces and nephews.
