Obituaries by LocationJesse E. Edmunds, 77, of Economy, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, in the Sewickley Valley Hospital, after an extended illness. Born Oct. 31, 1921, in Callery, Butler County, a son of the late Howard W. and Mildred Spencer Edmunds, he retired from LTV Steel, Aliquippa, on May 9, 1983, after 35 years of service and was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Ridge Road, Ambridge. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served in World War II from Aug. 4, 1942, to Oct. 21, 1945. During this time, he served in Africa, Germany, Italy, and France and attained the rank of Corporal of the Battery D 214th Anti-Aircraft Artillary Battalion. He received the Good Conduct Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with six Bronze Stars. He reinlisted in the United States Army for a second time in 1946 and served as Staff Sergeant until 1949. An avid lover of music, Jesse was an accomplished guitarist who played the bass guitar in Mad Anthony's band and in several clubs in the area. He also enjoyed volunteering his time and talents at local nursing homes. Surviving are his wife, Violet Cafrelli Edmunds; a son and daughter-in-law, Gilbert and Philomena Edmunds, Aliquippa; four grandchildren, Brian, Chris, Melissa and Elizabeth; a brother and sister-in-law, Howard and LeVerne Edmunds, Eastvale, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Belle Bull and Betty Gerazounis, and three brothers, Leroy, Melvin, and Robert Sr. Edmunds. Friends will be received today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the GABAUER FUNERAL HOME INC. at SYLVANIA HILLS MEMORIAL PARK INC., where a service will be conducted Wednesday at 10 a.m. Pastor Robert Fitzpatrick and Pastor Anthony J. Schneck will officiate. Entombment will follow in Sylvania Hills Memorial Park Mausoleum Inc., Daugherty Township. Full military rites will be provided by the Beaver County Special Unit.
Charles Louis Gates Jr., 30, of 148 Baker St., Aliquippa, died unexpectedly Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, in his home. Born Jan. 4, 1969, in Aliquippa, a son of the late Charles Louis Gates Sr. and Gladys Gates, he was a graduate of Quigley Catholic High School. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of Bethel Baptist Church, Aliquippa. Surviving are his wife, Angela Lynn Blocker Gates, Bridgewater; a son, Tyler Kirkland, Midland; a daughter, Markeata Gates, Aliquippa; two aunts, Ora Lee Newman and Maggie Reynolds, both of Aliquippa; an uncle, Buddy Reynolds Sr., Aliquippa; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, James and Franchester Blocker Sr., Bridgewater; a brother-in-law, James Blocker Jr., Aliquippa; a sister-in-law, Marita Blocker, Aliquippa; eight cousins, Buddy Reynolds Jr., Moon Township; David Reynolds, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Jerome Reynolds, in Minnesota; Debra Smith, Atlanta, Ga., and Mary Martin, Jackie Billingslea Davis, and Rosa Billingslea, all of Aliquippa, and a host of other relatives and friends. John Wendell Hemphill, 85, of the Reformed Presbyterian Retirement Home, Pittsburgh, and formerly of Enon Valley, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, in the West Penn Hospital. Born March 13, 1913, in Northwood, Ohio, a son of the late Willis R. and Margaret Isabella Qua Hemphill, he was a member of the Geneva Reformed Presbyterian Church. A retired farmer and milk processor, he was a veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years on Jan. 2, 1999, Mabel McCready Hemphill, and a son, Boyd W. Hemphill. Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Richard M. and Nancy Hemphill, Kansas City, Kans.; David W. and Bonny Hemphill, Beaver Falls, and Paul W. and Nancy Hemphill, Cranberry Township; a daughter and son-in-law, Lois and Stanley Perry, Shawnee, Kans.; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Marguerite Dean, North Sewickley Township, and four brothers, Rev. Raymond Hemphill, Broomfield, Colo.; Robert Hemphill, Williard E. Hemphill and Kenneth Hemphill, all of Beaver Falls. The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Geneva Reformed Presbyterian Church, 4th Avenue and 31st Street, with his pastor, the Rev. Bruce Backensto officiating, assisted by the Rev. Bruce Hemphill and the Rev. Renwick Wright. Interment will follow in the Grandview Cemetery, Big Beaver. Mr. Jonathan Kirk Huston, 38, of Covington, Ga., formerly of East Palestine, Ohio, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, in the DeKalb Medical Center. Born Sept. 10, 1960, in Lawrence County, Pa., a son of Robert and Jean Huston, of Conyers, Ga., he was a member of the Belmont Baptist Church, and was employed by Li-Way Transfer and Storage as a truck driver. He was a graduate of East Palestine High School, East Palestine, Ohio, and Hyles-Anderson College, Hammond, Ind. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are a brother, David Huston, Houston, Texas; three sisters, Bobbi Redelman, Wheaton, Ill.; Jan Miller, Stockbridge, Ga., and Dori Barr, Beaver Falls, and nieces and nephews. A service was conducted Monday, March 1, 1999, in the Belmont Baptist Church, Covington, Ga. The Rev. Nolan Jackson and the Rev. Denny Heiber officiated. Daniel L. Latchaw, 50, of Tampa, Fla., died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, in his home. Born Aug. 31, 1948, in Franklin, Pa., a son of Ethel M. Zerbe Latchaw and the late David E. Latchaw, he worked in the telecommunication field. He was a Marine veteran of the Vietnam War. Surviving are a son, Jason Latchaw, Beaver, and a daughter, Lori Latchaw, Beaver; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Terry and Chris Latchaw, David Latchaw, and Dennis Latchaw, all of Franklin, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Latchaw, and a sister, Ellen Latchaw. Friends will be received today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the ROBERT W. Mary E. (Biedenbach) Lucas, of Bethel Park, Pa., formerly of Munhall, Pa., died Monday, March 1, 1999, in the Franciscan Manor Nursing Home, Beaver Falls. Wife of the late John P. Lucas, she was the mother of Mary Ellen Petro of Beaver, Linda Donahue of Bethel Park and John P. Lucas of Golden, Colo.; sister of Joseph Biedenbach and the late Marc Biedenbach, and grandmother of Dylan Lucas. Barbara Mikovich, 90, of Aliquippa, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, in UPMC-Beaver Valley. Born Feb. 7, 1909, in Aliquippa, a daughter of the late James Mikovich and Frances (Shutti) Mikovich-Yazvac, she was a member of St. Titus Roman Catholic Church, Aliquippa, and was a retired employee of the tin mill of LTV Steel. Surviving are three nephews, James J. Agich, Calcutta, Ohio; Dr. George J. Agich and his wife, Mary Kate, Shaker Heights, Ohio, and Robert Rock and his wife, Marion, in New Jersey; two nieces, Margaret Faltenovich and her husband, Jerry, Hopewell Township, and Margaret Yazvac, Stowe, Ohio, and several great nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Anna Rock and Mary M. Agich. Friends will be received today from 6 to 9 p.m. in the WAYNE N. Virginia Freed Mullins Parker, 68, of Columbia, Tenn., fomerly of Homewood, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, after a battle with cancer. Born July 10, 1930, in Homewood, Pa., she was a member of the Homewood Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, in 1990, and her father, Sherman Freed in 1970. Surviving are her dear mother, Mary E. Abert, Homewood; four sons, Charles Mullins, in Florida; Harold Mullins, New Galilee; Robert Mullins, and Johnny Mullins, in California; a daughter, Bonnie, Slippery Rock, Pa.; five grandchildren; a great-grandson; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, John Freed, Beaver Falls; Delmar and Viola Freed, Homewood, with whom Mary resides; William and Sandy Freed, Clearwater, Fla., and George and Joyce Freed, New Castle, and several aunts and uncles. A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 4, 1999, at 7:30 p.m. in the Homewood Methodist Church, First Avenue.
Louise H. Turner, 71, of Ohioville, died Sunday afternoon, Feb. 28, 1999, in her home following a brief illness. Born June 8, 1927, in Washington County, Pa., a daughter of the late Marion C. and Hannah Hutchison, she was a resident of Ohioville for the past 39 years. She retired in 1992 as cafeteria manager for the Western Beaver School District after over 25 years of service. She was a member of the Clarksville Christian Church, Clarksville, Pa., and attended the Fairview Reformed Presbyterian Church P.C.A., Ohioville. She was also a member of the Fairview Grange and the Rebekah Lodge. She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren C. Turner, on June 11, 1980. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel W. and Susan Turner, Brighton Township, and David C. and Cindy Turner, Imperial; a daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca L. and Dominic A. D'Egidio, Ohioville; five grandchildren, Rachael, Leigh, Drew, Vincent and Deanna; a brother, Emmett Hutchison, Lorraine, Ohio, and a sister, Mrs. Helen Litman, Waynesburg, Pa. Visitation and services will be private. The Rev. Richard Raines, pastor of the Fairview Reformed Presbyterian Church P.C.A., will officiate. Interment will take place in Beaver Cemetery, Beaver. Frank Vincent, 63, a resident of Aliquippa for 10 years, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, in The Medical Center, Beaver. Born Oct. 21, 1935, in East Providence, R.I., a son of the late Frank and Angelina Vincent, he worked in corporate security for USAir. Before working at USAir, he worked as a security consultant at Rhode Island Electric Protective Co., Providence, and also with the sales engineering department in the development of security systems for a range of industrial, commercial and residential clients. He previously was a security officer at People's Bank, Providence, and before that was security manager at Rhode Island Hospital Trust National Bank. After his retirement, he worked at Kaufmann's and Boscov's at the Beaver Valley Mall. He was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Roman Catholic Church, Center Township, where he served as a lector and eucharistic minister. Surviving is his wife, Jacqueline Vincent, Aliquippa. Friends will be received today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the DARROCH MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 2640 Mill St., Aliquippa, where a service will be conducted Wednesday at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, Center Township. Interment will be in Rhode Island. A wake service will be held today at 8:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
