Born July 21, 1932, in Monaca, a daughter of the late William H. and Sarah Alice Hitchman Clear, she was a retired nurses aide from Home Aide in Bridgewater and was a Protestant by faith. Surviving are four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Mrs. Charles (Alice) Auld, New Brighton; Miss Ethel Clear, Rochester; Mrs. Don (Geraldine) Mayhue, Vanport, and Mrs. Daniel (Sandra) Somerville, Kirtland, Ohio; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Betty Clear, Erie, Pa., and Gerald and Shirley Clear, Patterson Township; a beloved aunt, Edith Kress, Rochester; a sister-in-law, Margaret "Peg" Clear, Monaca, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Clear. Friends will be received Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the WILLIAM MURPHY FUNERAL HOME INC., 349 Adams St., Rochester, where a service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Robert Singleton, pastor of the Rochester Free Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will follow in Sylvania Hills Memorial Park.
Jesse Arnott, 90, of Rochester, passed away Thursday, March 4, 1999, in The Medical Center, Beaver. Born April 7, 1908, in Antiquity, Ohio, a son of the late Otis C. and Bertha Roush Arnott, he was a retired employee with Dravo Corporation, Pittsburgh office, and was Protestant by faith. Surviving are his wife, Mary Catherine Hoffman Arnott; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia A. and Lawrence Stowe, Beaver Falls; a grandson and spouse, Mark D. and Teresa Stowe, Beaver Falls; a granddaughter and spouse, Pauline Ann Stowe and Brian B. Schlotter, Twinsburg, Ohio; a great-grandson, Zachary Schlotter, Twinsburg, Ohio; a sister and brother-in-law, Violet and Lawrence Bush, and a brother, William Arnott, all of Racine, Ohio, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Zella, Wilma, and Mae; and five brothers, John, Clark, Ira, Arthur, and Franklin Arnott. Friends will be received today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and Monday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the WILLIAM MURPHY FUNERAL HOME INC., 349 Adams St., Rochester, where a Blessing service will be held at 2 p.m. Interment will follow in St. Cecilia's Cemetery, Daugherty Township. The family wishes memorial contributions be made, if desired, to a charity of choice.
Donald W. Bertram, 64, of Beaver, died unexpectedly Friday, March 5, 1999, in the Allegheny General Hospital Emergency Room, Pittsburgh. Born Dec. 16, 1934, in Bedford, Pa., a son of the late John and Mildred King Bertram, he was a resident of Beaver for the past 40 years. From 1959 to 1982, he worked as a civil engineer and project executive for Three Rivers Stadium, Pittsburgh, with Michael Baker Jr. Inc., having served as senior vice president of the northern division, from which he left in 1982 to become Beaver County's first County Engineer. He retired in July 1998 from Chester Engineers, Pittsburgh, formerly Green International of Sewickley, serving as vice president of construction services, where he oversaw capital improvement programs for the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority. He was a member of Beaver United Methodist Church and a U.S. Army veteran. He was a 1952 graduate of Everett High School, Everett, Pa., and a 1959 graduate of Penn State University, State College. A former president and member of Beaver County Chapter of Professional Engineers, he was honored in 1972 as Engineer of the Year. He was also a member of the Jolly Boys II Investment Club of Beaver. Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Carole Murdock Bertram; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Barbara and Michael Petrovic, Barrington, Ill.; Cathy and William Brown, Crown Point, Ind., and Julie Bertram, Scott Township; a brother, Dr. Robert F. Bertram, and three grandchildren, Beth and Thomas Petrovic and Corey Brown. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. John Bertram. Friends will be received today from noon to 3 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. in the NOLL FUNERAL HOME, 333 Third St., Beaver. A funeral service will be conducted Monday at 10 a.m. in the Beaver United Methodist Church with his pastor, the Rev. Dennis M. Henley, officiating. Interment will follow in Beaver Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made, if desired, to the Beaver United Methodist Church, 345 College Ave., Beaver, Pa. 15009.
Leonard "Gus" Bloom, 70, a resident of Aliquippa for 30 years, died Friday evening, March 5, 1999, in his residence. Born Nov. 2, 1928, in Rochester, a son of the late Leonard and Josephine Bloom, he was retired from Boilermakers Local 154, Pittsburgh. He was a member of the Hopewell V.F.W.; Beaver Valley Horseshoe Club, and Celtic Reds. Surviving are his wife, Nancy (Weigle) Bloom, Aliquippa; three daughters, Dana Ciamacca, Tracy Bloom, and Alane McElhaney, all of Aliquippa; four grandchildren, Jessica Buchanan and Marisa Ciamacca, both of Aliquippa, and Jerry and Leonard McElhaney, both of Hookstown; two brothers, Phillip Bloom, Rochester, and John Bloom, New Brighton; seven sisters, Patricia Marko, Beaver; Dana Kvamme and Linda Bloom, both of Beaver Falls; Virginia Bozek, Center Township; Karen Swonger, Canton, Ohio; Sonja Schmidt, Rochester, and Roberta McDade, in California. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Nancy Dewey and Rosemary Bloom. Friends will be received Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the DARROCH MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 2640 Mill St., Aliquippa, where a service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jack Patrick officiating.
Carl Cantner, 92, of 5064 SR 170, East Palestine, Ohio, passed away Friday, March 5, 1999, at 9:35 a.m. in the Beaver Valley Nursing Center, Beaver Falls, following a lengthy illness. Born May 24, 1906, in Belmont, W.Va., a son of the late Charles and Jennie Lynd Cantner, he lived most of his life in the New Brighton area before moving to Darlington and later to East Palestine in 1981. He was employed as a boilermaker with Local 154, Pittsburgh, from 1943 until his retirement in 1972. Surviving are his wife, Emaline Haught Cantner, whom he married Nov. 3, 1928; two sons, Charles Cantner, Beaver Falls, and Joseph Cantner, New Brighton; a sister, Mrs. Betty Nance, Belmont, W.Va.; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. Friends will be received today from 7 to 9 p.m. in the OLIVER-LINSLEY FUNERAL HOME, 644 E. Main St., East Palestine, Ohio, where a service will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Joseph Sheely officiating. Burial will be in Crest Haven Memorial Gardens, New Waterford, Ohio.
Jesse G. Claypole, 87, of Moon Township, died Friday, March 5, 1999, in Mariner Nursing Home of West Hills, Moon Township. Born Aug. 12, 1911, in Rockcave, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Jake and Florence (Riley) Trusler. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harmon Claypole, in 1973; a son, Herbert Claypole; a daughter, Florence Claypole; a grandson, Arthur Miller, and two brothers, Charles and Ralph Trusler. Surviving are three sons and two daughters-in-law, Maurice and Marcie Claypole, Aliquippa; Kenneth Claypole, Clymer, Pa., and Gary and Coreen Claypole, Hopewell Township; a daughter, Veda Miller, Amsterdam, Ohio; 11 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Friends will be received today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the WAYNE N. TATALOVICH FUNERAL HOME, 2205 McMinn St., Aliquippa, where a service will be conducted Monday at 2:30 p.m. with Pastor Ted Dennis officiating. Interment will follow in John Anderson Memorial Cemetery, Raccoon Township.
Kathryn Cottage, 83, of Economy, died Friday, March 5, 1999, in Sewickley Valley Hospital. Born Jan. 14, 1916, in Donora, Pa., a daughter of the late Joseph and Theresa Yablonski Bill, she was a resident of the Economy/Ambridge area since 1945. She was a housewife and a member of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, Baden. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George T. Cottage, in October 1992; a brother, John A. Bill, in 1942, and a sister, Jean Stevens, in 1996. Surviving are her children, Sandra L. and James Matuga, Morgantown, W.Va.; Dennis J. and Loretta Cottage, Brighton Township, and George A. and Becky Cottage, Wheeling, W.Va.; her grandchildren, James F. Matuga and Amy Montague, both of Morgantown, W.Va.; Robert P. Matuga, Washington, D.C.; Carrie Sammons, Brookfield, Ohio, and Joel and Zachary Cottage, Wheeling, W.Va.; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Fran Eichler, Sacramento, Calif., and Virginia and Paul Lukas, Washington, Pa. Friends will be received today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the WALTER R. KASPER FUNERAL HOME, 547 Eighth St., Ambridge, where a service will be held Monday at 9:15 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church. Entombment will be in Beaver Cemetery Mausoleum, Beaver. A Christian wake service will be held today at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
Michael J. Halligan Sr., 63, of Lisbon, Ohio, died Friday, March 5, 1999, in the Youngstown Osteopathic Hospital after a lengthy illness. Born Jan. 14, 1936, in Bellevue, Pa., a son of Mary Bauer Halligan and the late Thomas P. Halligan Sr., who died in 1985, he moved from Beaver Falls to Lisbon in 1965. He was a block operator for Conrail for 25 years and was Catholic by faith. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran from 1955 to 1959, where he served as a control tower operator. Surviving are his wife, Rose M. Kearns Halligan, whom he married April 21, 1956; three daughters, Rose Reardon, West Point, Ohio, and Janice Borg and Mildred Daniels, both of Lisbon; three sons, Michael Halligan Jr. and William Halligan, both of Lisbon, and Thomas Halligan, Ravenna, Ohio; a sister Marie Halligan, Beaver Falls; three brothers, Thomas P. Halligan Jr., Beaver; Richard Halligan, Eastvale, and Robert Halligan, Ohioville; 12 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Friends will be received today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the EELLS-LEGGETT FUNERAL HOME, 215 West Lincoln Way, Lisbon, Ohio, where a prayer service will be held at 8 p.m. A burial Mass will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. in St. George Catholic Church, 271 W. Chestnut St., Lisbon, with the Rev. Father Robert Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Lisbon Cemetery. The Tri-State Burial Group will conduct full military honors.
Roy Richard Hermesman, 78, a Foreign Service Officer who retired in 1979 after serving as Administrative Officer for the U.S. Embassy in Lusaka, Zambia, died as a result of chronic renal failure February 4, 1999, in the Montgomery Village Care and Rehabilitation Center, Gaithersburg, Md. Mr. Hermesman, a resident of Darnestown, Md., was born in Sewickley. The son of Richard and Katherine Hermesman of Ambridge, Mr. Hermesman graduated from Ambridge High School in 1938, and began his government career in 1942 when he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was sent to England. He was discharged in 1945, but returned to Europe between 1946 and 1949 to work for the U.S. Military Government in Munich, Germany. Upon his return to the United States in 1949, Mr. Hermesman worked for the Voice of America in New York City until 1951, when he began his 28-year career with the U.S. Department of State. He began his first assignment at the U.S. Embassy in Santiago, Chile, as the General Service Officer. Through the course of his career he was assigned to nine other consulates and embassies, including postings in Rome, Hong Kong, Hamburg and Manila. He performed consular and administrative duties during those assignments. Mr. Hermesman was an avid golfer and bridge player, and a member of the Montgomery Country Club. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and performed volunteer work for charity organizations in the Washington, D.C. community. His wife of 29 years, Margaret Hermesman, who accompanied him on his overseas assignments, died in 1988. Survivors include two children, Roy Ricardo Hermesman, Gaithersburg, Md., and Geoffrey Frank Hermesman, Ashburn, Va.; a sister, Dorothy Bohi, Cheyenne, Wyo., and four grandchildren. Friends were welcomed at the ROBERT A. PUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME, Rockville, Md., on February 8, 1999. He was laid to rest at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Aspen Hill, Md., following a Christian service.
Irmgard "Irma" M. (Schroeder) Hinkel, 95, a resident of Sewickley since 1982 and a former resident of Columbus, Ohio, died Friday, March 5, 1999, in her daughter's home in Moon Township. Born May 15, 1903, in Bertelsdorf, Germany, a daughter of the late Wilhelm and Anna (Krause) Schroeder, she was the office manager for a private dentist in Columbus, Ohio, retiring in 1962. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Moon Township, where she was a member of the Women's Group. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hans Hinkel; a sister, Lucie Schroeder, and a brother, William Schroeder. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Anne E. and Albert L. Stuever, Moon Township; a sister, Dora Buss, Franksville, Iowa; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Friends will be received today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the COPELAND MOON TOWNSHIP FUNERAL HOME, 981 Brodhead Rd. A service will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. in Grace Lutheran Church with her minister, Pastor Ann Howe, officiating. Memorial donations may be made, if desired, to Grace Lutheran Church, 1192 Brodhead Rd., Moon Township, Pa. 15108, or Good Samaritan Hospice, 3500 Brooktree Rd., Suite 200, Wexford, Pa. 15090.
