Obituaries by LocationRussell C. Holzhauser, 79, of Fair Oaks, died Friday, March 26, 1999, in North Hills Passavant Hospital, Pittsburgh, following a very brief illness. Born Jan. 29, 1920, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Otto F. and Ella Cameron Holzhauser, he had resided in Fair Oaks for the past 52 years. He was a retired employee of the American Bridge Division of USX Corporation for a period of 40 years, retiring in 1982. He served with the 85th Infantry Division during World War II, and was a member of the Leetsdale VFW Post 3372, and St. Matthews Evangelical Lutheran Church, Leetsdale. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nevada Rosenberger Holzhauser, in 1981, and a sister, Christine Haney. He is survived by a daughter, Sandra and her husband, Thomas Bridge; two grandsons, Matthew and Marcus Bridge, and a granddaughter, Megan Bridge, all of McCandless Township; two sisters, Elizabeth Rogers, Bellevue, and Carolyn and her husband, Victor Baugh, Clarks Hill, S.C.; three brothers-in-law, Andrew and his wife, Mabel Segeleon, Port Ritchey, Fla.; John and his wife, Grace Carr, Fair Oaks, and Michael Haney, Pittsburgh, and a dear friend, Dorothy Piltz, Ambridge. Friends will be received today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the JOHN SYKA FUNERAL HOME, 833 Kennedy Drive, Ambridge, where a service wil be held Monday, March 29, 1999, at 1 p.m., with his pastor, the Rev. Thomas E. Moog, officiating. Interment will take place in Sylvania Hills Memorial Park, Daugherty Township.
June Powell Madden, 70, of White Township, died Sunday, March 14, 1999, in The Medical Center, Beaver. Born June 17, 1928, in West Mayfield, a daughter of the late Leslie and Ida Mae (Frederick) Powell, she was employed as a Bell Telephone operator during the late 1940s and early 1950s. She was a member of the College Hill United Presbyterian Church and was interested in Herbology, the study of herbs for medicinal purposes. Surviving are her husband of 49 years, Louis "Pete" Madden; a daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Robert Helmuth, Stanardsville, Va.; two grandchildren, Erin and Nicole Helmuth, both of Stanardsville, Va.; a sister, Peggy Bardocz, College Hill; a sister and brother-in-law, Lucinda and Tom Chidester, North Sewickley Township; a brother and sister-in-law, Leslie S. Jr. and Sally Powell, Big Beaver; an aunt, Isabel Bonar, Clearwater, Fla., and several nieces and nephews. There was no public visitation. CAMPBELL'S BEAVER FALLS FUNERAL HOME was in charge of all arrangements.
James Austin Moore Sr., of South Ozone Park, Queens, N.Y., went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 22, 1999. He was born in East Tallassee, Ala., in February 1936, and was the fourth child of Alice Griffin Moore and the late Samuel Moore Sr. He received his education from the Aliquippa School District and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He attended the First Church of God in Christ, Aliquippa. On Sept. 17, 1960, he was united in marriage to Joyce S. Gilbert. Austin and Joyce moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., where he was employed in the U.S. Postal Service for approximately 7 years. He retired in 1990 from the NYC Transit Authority. Austin was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and neighbor. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Joyce, of 38 years; two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Sharon Moore II, New Hempstead, N.Y., and Anthony and Renee Moore; two daughters and sons-in-law, Anita and Louis Stevenson, Aliquippa, and Coatlique and Cecilio Joseph, Uniondale, N.Y.; his six brothers and sisters-in-law, William David and Irma Moore, Cleveland, Ohio; Samuel Jr., Donald and Carolyn Moore, and Paul Moore, all of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Howard and Ruth Moore, Laurelton, N.Y., and Benjamin and Lucille Moore, Henrietta, N.Y.; his five sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty Abercrombie, and Terri and Charles Harris, all of Rochester, N.Y.; Bennie V. Summers, Brooklyn, N.Y.; Alice R. and Elder Benjamin Davis and Dawn and Collins Anderson Sr., all of Aliquippa; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Melvin and Rose Marie Gilbert, St. Albans, N.Y.; Willard Gilbert, Detroit, Mich., and Aileen Gilbert, Aliquippa. He also leaves three uncles, an aunt, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many devoted friends and co-workers. Friends will be received today from 7 to 9 p.m. in the SHEFFIELD ALIQUIPPA FUNERAL HOME, 920 Franklin Ave. Mr. Moore will lie in state Monday from 11 a.m. until time of service at 1 p.m in the Church in the Round C.O.G.I.C., Woodrow and Griffith Streets, Aliquippa. The Bishop Melvin E. Clark Sr., of the Church in the Round C.O.G.I.C., will officiate. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Aliquippa.
Margaret "Tonie" L. Moss, 75, of North Sewickley Township, passed away Friday, March 26, 1999, in her home, after a lengthy illness. Born Feb. 25, 1924, in Midland, she was the daughter of the late Mary Lento, and was also the foster daughter of the late Frank and Mahalia Lewis, New Brighton. A lifelong resident of Beaver County, she loved family, church and the community. Much of her time was spent rendering service to others. She was involved in the Missionary Society, Board of Trustees, Board of Stewards, Young People's Department (YPD-Past President) and taught Sunday school for many years at Wayman Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, New Brighton, and the Second Baptist Church, Beaver Falls. From fighting discrimination in Beaver County to participating in national civil rights marches, her 54 years of devotion to the Beaver Valley National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has earned her many accolades, including a proclamation from county commissioners. She became involved with the NAACP when she was 16 years old and soon found role models. Margaret was involved for many years with the NAACP on the local, state, and national levels. On the local level, Margaret was instrumental in the Butler Branch NAACP being organized. A young adult chapter and a Women's Auxiliary, to work with the new branch, she was organized under her advisement. In 1963 she took the youth council members to the "March on Washington." She was a member of the local branch for over 50 years and a Youth Advisor for 20 years. She served as the Branch Secretary and the Chairperson of the Life Membership Committee. On the state level, she served as the assistant secretary from 1978 to 1985, first through appointment, then re-elected with no opposition three times. On the national level, she was elected and served on several committees including Credentials, Resolutions, Time and Place, National Youth Work committee, "King and Queen" contestants and chaperoned at many youth funtions. Recognition has been noted in some instances: She received the 1968 Outstanding Service Award, National Youth Committe, and On July 1, 1977, in St. Louis, Mo., and on July 7, 1978, in Portland, Ore., she received the Advisors Certificate of Appreciation. She also received the Bipartisan Voter Registration Certificate of Appreciation by working on the campaign for Gov. Milton M. Shapp, on March 30, 1978. In 1970, she served as a Beaver County representative on the White House Conference for children and youth. She was also involved with the following organizations: United Way of Beaver County, American Cancer Society, Faith Housing, Secretary-10 years, president-2 years, Legal Services of Beaver County, Charter Member, 1985 President, League of Women's Voter, Beaver Valley Red Cross, "Young Commission, " Beaver County Medical Center, Geneva College Board Member, Adult Literacy Program-Penn State Beaver Campus, State Representative, Beaver County Cooperative Extension Association, Consumer Board of Beaver County, Peace Links, Advisor, Afro-American History Club, Rochester High School, Membership Chairpeson of Beaver Valley Chapter NAACP (past president) and director, Beaver Falls United Action Center, Mount Washington. She is survived by her loving husband of over 40 years, Bob F. Moss; three children, Ronald D. Gibson and daughter-in-law, Pat, North Sewickley Township; Paulette A. Potter and son-in-law, George, North Sewickley Township, and Shelley L. Helton, Detroit, Mich., eight grandchildren, Scott Gibson, George Potter Jr. (Vangie), Anthony Helton (Sylvan), R.J. Gibson, Michael Potter, James Potter, April Morton (Kwame) and Matthew Potter, nine great-grandchildren, Lars, Lance, Devin, Zachary, Dominic, Cassandra, Kwame Jr., Kaleb, Kamill, and a host of nephews, nieces, godchildren, relatives and friends. Edward W. Ochman, 76, of Freedom, died Friday, March 26, 1999, in The Medical Center, Beaver. Born Sept. 5, 1922, in Ambridge, a son of the late John and Marie (Pierazak) Ochman, he was a member of St. Felix Roman Catholic Church, Freedom. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and was retired from Armco Steel Co. of Ambridge where he worked in the cutting and finishing department. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Judy Ochman, Coraopolis, and Edward K. and Katherine Ochman, Economy Borough; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Cathy and Mark Michetti, Fowler, Ohio; Barbara and Steve Domnitz, Jupiter, Fla., and Cheryl Williams, Las Vegas, Nev.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Regina Ochman, Ambridge; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Jane and Chester Glogoski, West Natrona, Pa.; Ceil Wargetz, Rochester Hills, Mich., and Sophie DiMaccio, Ambridge, and a sister-in-law, Nola Ochman, Ambridge. Louise Rager, 76, of Aliquippa, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, in the Golfview Manor Nursing Home. Born Jan. 6, 1923, in Johnstown, Pa., a daughter of the late Dean and Mary Boyer, she was a resident of Aliquippa for 52 years. A homemaker, she was a Presbyterian by faith and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Hopewell VFW. Surviving are her husband, Charles F. Rager; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Charles A. and Paula Rager, Tampa, Fla., and Richard Dean Rager, Tarpon Springs, Fla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Janie and Ken Shiver, Lakeland, Fla.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard Dean Boyer, Hemet, Calif.; a sister, Jean Robel, Johnstown, Pa., and two sisters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Don and Iva Sutter, and Mr. and Mrs. Larry and Bev Paxton, all of Center Township. Peter A. Zona, 86, of 700 Hazel Ave., Ellwood City, died Friday, March 26, 1999, at 6 p.m. in Jameson Health Care Center, New Castle. Born Nov. 4, 1912, in Caserta, Italy, he was the son of the late Guiseppe Zona and Raffaela Santillo. He retired from the Ellwood City Forge Co. in 1976 with 45 years service, and was a member of St. Agatha Church, Ellwood City, and the Ellwood City Forge 25 Year Club. He is survived by his wife, Rose Marie Zarlingo Zona, whom he married April 26, 1947; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Reene Zona, Coraopolis; Peter J. and Debra Zona, West Pittsburgh, and Alfonso and Mary Parente, Ellwood City; a daughter, Mrs. Janice DiAlesandro, New Castle; two sisters, Lucia Parisi, and Maria Zeppetella, in Italy; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alfonzina Parente Zona, in 1938, and a brother, Antonio. Walter Carlyle Brown, 77, of Big Beaver, went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 29, 1999, in his residence. Born Jan. 29, 1922, in West Bridgewater, a son of the late Jess and Virginia Dauber Brown, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and retired in 1984 with 43 years of service from the Babcock & Wilcox Tubular Products Company, Fuel Oil Department. He was a member of the Parian Lodge 662 F&AM; New Castle Consistory, and had regularly attended the Chippewa Evangelical Free Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Brewer Brown, in 1990; a brother, William L. Brown, and a sister, Betty Heitger. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, David E. and Carolyn Brown, East Palestine, Ohio; twin daughters and their husbands, Cheryl Carlyle Uslenghi and Ronald, Big Beaver, and Christine Carlyle Hall and Terry, Chippewa Township; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, and a special friend, June Douthett, Chippewa Township. Carolyn R. Cangiano, 71, of Center Township, died peacefully Monday morning, March 29, 1999, in The Medical Center, Beaver. Born Feb. 7, 1928, in Rochester, a daughter of Joseph E. Signore of Rochester and the late Catherine (Tucciarone) Signore, she was a graduate of the Rochester High School Class of 1946 and the Garfield Business School of Beaver Falls. She was a former bookkeeper for the Beaver Valley Times (Beaver County Times) and was a devoted parish member of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, Center Township, where she was a member of the Confraternity of Christian Mothers. She was also a member of the Center Civic Women's Club. Dearly loved and missed by her family, she is survived by her husband, Paul N. Cangiano, to whom she was united in marriage in September 1957; a son, Joseph Paul Cangiano, Center Township; a brother and sister-in-law, Ozzie and Joanne Signore, New Brighton; four sisters and their spouses, Mrs. John (Rose) Morack, Atlantic, Fla.; Mrs. Charles (Clare) Fusco, Rochester Township; Mrs. Pete (Patti) Cabrena, Key West, Fla., and Mrs. Gary (Mari Kay) Frye, Center Township; two brothers-in-law, Frank A.
