Inspired by her daughter's devotion to her chosen profession, Elizabeth's mother, Mrs. Mary Kennedy McHugh, one of Pennsylvania's most beloved poets, wrote "To Our Nurses-Guardian Angels in White" (Excerpt from this poem follows)
"Her young eyes have gazed in wonder, as at first she beheld HIS creation in the mystery of life, and the happy mother's smile, contentment and pride, as ever so gently she places the newborn infant by her side. She beholds another angel, too, a dark one in disguise. And there is sadness in her heart, as she closes forever a dear ones eyes.
God bless her, and be ever kind, smooth her path as she smooths her gown. May she always wear a halo of white, and when she is called to rest, please God, I beg of You this humble request;
May our guardian angels in white, sit at Your right hand and wear a golden crown."
