Billy Childress
Jan. 9, 2003
Mr. Billy E. Childress, age 74, of RR3, Box 106, Meshoppen, PA, (Rushboro) passed away at the Community Medical Center in Scranton early Thursday morning, Jan. 9, 2003.
Born in Tazewell, VA on Feb. 1, 1928, he was the son of the late John Wesley and Grace Marie Pruitt Childress.
Mr. Childress was a veteran of the U.S. Marines, where he served his country from 1945 until 1948 in the Asiatic Pacific Theater.
From 1965 until 1972, he and his brother owned and operated Childress Brothers Dairy in Blairstown, NJ, after which the Childress family moved to the Meshoppen area and Billy worked as a herdsman for Sire Power in Tunkhannock until he retired in 1988.
He is survived by his wife, Luella Waldron Childress of Rushboro; four sons, William Childress of Branchville, NJ, Jeffrey Childress of Toms River, NJ, Michael Childress of Rushboro and Mark Childress of Stillwater, NJ; two daughters, Nancy Mikkelson of Blairstown, NJ and Theresa Hendershot of Westtown, NY; three brothers, Buddy Childress and Phillip Childress, both of Rushboro and Ronald Childress of Meshoppen; two sisters, Bonnie Headley of Oak Ridge, NJ and Shirley Conboy of Montrose; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Charlene Childress in 1999; three sisters, Edna Childress in 1932, Corine Benscoter in 1998 and Rose Marie Childress in 1973.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 5 p.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Meshoppen, with the Rev. Gary Myers of the Meshoppen Biblical Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family at a later date in the Jersey Hill Cemetery . Family and friends called at the funeral home on Saturday from 3 p.m. until the time of the service.

Carl Campbell
Jan. 8, 2003.
Carl E. Campbell, age 64, of Hillsgrove, PA, passed away at his home in the late afternoon on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003.
He was born on Oct. 23, 1938 in Estella, a son of Theodore and Martha Hess Campbell.
Carl was a veteran, having served in the United States Navy.
On Sept. 9, 1961, he married Connie Edkin in Hillsgrove. They had celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary.
On Dec. 1, 2001, he retired from PP&L as a serviceman, giving 32 years of service.
He spent most of his married life in the Hillsgrove area. He was a member of the Hillsgrove Union Church.
His other memberships include the Hillsgrove Fire Company, New Albany VFW and Highland Lake Manor 40&8.
In his younger years, he enjoyed playing baseball. He played baseball, coached Little League and played softball.
Carl enjoyed time spent in Atlantic City.
He left surviving his wife, Connie Edkin Campbell, at home; his mother, Martha Hess Campbell; three children, Frank and Sylvia Campbell of Hillsgrove, Michael "Mickey" Campbell of Overton, Julie and Scott Rutledge of Byhalia, MI; a sister and brother-in-law, Carrie and "Bud" Harvey Breniesen; three grandchildren, Allyson Rodie, Eric Rodie and Christina Rodie; four nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Theodore Campbell.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 1 p.m. in the Hillsgrove Union Church, with the Rev. Phyllis Hunter, pastor, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hillsgrove Union Church or the Hillsgrove Fire Company in Mr. Campbell’s memory.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore.

Robert Holdren
Jan. 6, 2003
Mr. Robert M. Holdren, well-known to his friends and colleagues as Bob Holdren, age 72, of RR2, Box 2297, Laceyville, PA 18623 went to be with his Lord and Savior Monday afternoon, Jan. 6, 2003 at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Silvara on March 8, 1930, he was the son of the late Burr E. and Daisy Miller Holdren. Raised in Skinners Eddy, he graduated from Laceyville High School in 1947, then continued his education at Lackawanna Business College in Scranton.
He started a 55-year career as a building materials salesman with Whipple Lumber Co., Inc. in Laceyville where he developed many lifelong friendships serving many contractors and clients throughout the Northeast.
A two-year interruption in his employment was a call to military service in the U.S. Army as a Private First Class during the Korean War. During his military years, he played and recorded with various groups and bands as a pianist throughout Kentucky, Georgia and Massachusetts.
He continued sharing his musical gift in various groups such as with his father Burr Holdren as caller at local square dances, The Doc Place Band, pre-show entertainment for the Local Barbershop Concerts, the Harford Fair, musical entertainment with John Bolles in "Memories & Melody," accompany his daughter, Melody, vocals, many solo engagements and more recently with the Dean Balcomb Band.
He was a member of the Belltones Gospel Group for over 20 years, played piano for the Braintrim Baptist Church Men’s Sunday School class since 1966 where he attended church and ministered at local nursing homes through his music and testimony. He was an exceedingly caring and thoughtful man with a keen sense of humor, who greatly loved his Lord, his family and people. Where his life and business took him, he carried his faith in Jesus Christ and loved to simply share it.
He also enjoyed hunting with his sons, attending his grandchildren’s sporting and school events and enjoying times together with his family. He has been a wonderfully loving and supportive husband and father, who is so dearly loved and missed.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, the former Doris B. LaFrance of South Auburn, along with three children: one daughter and son-in-law, Melody Holdren Montross and her husband, Dennis of Tunkhannock; two sons and daughters-in-law, Frank Holdren and his wife, Lori of Laceyville, and Torrey Holdren and his wife, Amy of Tunkhannock. Also surviving are his greatly loved grandchildren, Lorissa, Laci, Codey and Kiley Holdren; one brother, Harold Holdren; four sisters, Mrs. Bonnie Jayne, Mrs. Lolita Jayne, Mrs. Beryle Ciprich and Mrs. Norma Harrington and many other relatives.
Services will be held at the Braintrim Baptist Church on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 11 a.m. The Rev. Thomas Davis, the Rev. James Brock and Mr. Frank Baldwin, brother-in-law, will officiate. Calling hours will be Friday, Jan. 10 from 1 to 3 and 6 to 9 p.m. at the Braintrim Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bobby Holdren Memorial Musician’s Award Fund to the Grange National Bank, c/o Mrs. Gerri Jayne, PO Box 56, Laceyville, PA 18623.

Jessie Vanderpool
Jan. 1, 2003
Jessie Lou Johnson Vanderpool, 89, widow of Sheldon Vanderpool of Monroeton RR1, Monroe Township, PA, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003 at the Bradford County Manor, West Burlington Township, PA.
Born Oct. 23, 1913 in Springville, Wyoming County, she was a daughter of the late William and Lillie Springer Johnson. Jessie was employed by the Towanda Folding Box Company for 26 years and later by Sylvania Electric in Towanda for several years. She enjoyed fishing and the outdoors.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Laverne E. and Leeta Vanderpool of Mount Bethel; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Algy and Stanley Johnson, both of Tioga; three sisters, Lila Kinner of Laporte, Doris Baer of Shade Gap, Mary Van Campen of Texas; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sheldon Vanderpool in 1973; three sons, Charles Vanderpool in 1992, Gordon Vanderpool in 1996 and Algy Vanderpool in May 2002; two daughters, Albertha Beach and Virginia Vanderpool; four brothers, Sheldon, Paul, Noble and Ralph Johnson; two sisters, Mildred Johnson and Florence Jenkins.
The funeral service was held on Monday, Jan. 6 at 11 a.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, with the Rev. Jason Guillaume, pastor of the Powell United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment was in the Monroeton Cemetery , Monroeton.
The family received friends on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and on Monday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
The family suggests that memorials be directed to the Powell United Methodist Church in care of Todd Bacon, RR3, Box 277, Towanda, PA 18848 in Mrs. Vanderpool’s memory.

Albert Sellers
Dec. 29, 2002
Albert Rodgers Sellers, Sr., age 84, of Wyalusing (Terry Township), PA, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002 at the Towanda Memorial Hospital.
Albert was born in Lansdale on Aug. 2, 1918, the son of the late Horace K. and Sarah Schnable Sellers. He attended the Lansdale High School and married the former Mary A. Hoffman of North Wales on Aug. 26, 1940. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was awarded a Presidential Citation for his bravery in the Battle of Normandy.
Albert was a self-employed masonry contractor (Sellers’ Masonry) in the Lansdale and Norristown areas. His personal achievements were: a restoration of the Stroudsburg Courthouse and the building and rehabilitation of many fireplaces at the Valley Forge National Park. He retired to Bradford County in 1988, where he enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Surviving are his spouse, Mary, at home; two sons and daughter-in-law, Albert R., Jr. and Emma Sellers, Souderton and Michael James Sellers of Wyalusing; a sister, Ida Mae Wasser of California; six grandsons, Timothy, Matthew, Jed, Justin, Rodney and Scott Sellers.
Albert was predeceased by an infant daughter, Joanne in 1940 and a sister, Marjorie Smith of Ambler.
A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family and memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society, Bradford County Unit, 1948 E. Third St., Williamsport, PA 17701-3945.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, One Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing, PA 18853.

Clifford Roslund
Jan. 4, 2003
Clifford R. Roslund, age 86, of 13 Maple Lane, Tunkhannock, PA, passed away at Carpenter Care Center in Tunkhannock on Saturday evening, Jan. 4, 2003. He had been a resident of Tunkhannock for over 50 years.
Born in Locust Valley, Long Island, NY on April 15, 1916, he was the son of the late Johanus and Antoinette Simonsen Roslund.
He was married to the former Doris Learn and they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 27, 2002.
He graduated from the high school on Long Island and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Mathematics from Juniata College, a Master of Science degree in School Administration from Bucknell University and did further graduate work at Penn State University. Mr. Roslund began his teaching career as a Science and Math teacher in Laceyville. From there, he went on to become a principal, assistant Wyoming County superintendent and superintendent of Tunkhannock Area Schools. He was the superintendent at Tunkhannock for 21 of his 35 years in public education. He was an Army veteran of World War II and attended the Community Bible Church in Tunkhannock.
Surviving are his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Ann of Clarks Summit; two grandsons, Jonathan and Brian Roslund. He was preceded in death by a brother, Harry.
Funeral services were held at the Harding-Litwin Funeral Home, 123 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock, on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. David Stuckey of Community Bible Church in Tunkhannock officiating. Interment was in the Sunnyside Cemetery , Tunkhannock. Calling hours were held at the funeral home on Tuesday, Jan. 7 from 3 to 6 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice in Mr. Roslund’s memory.

Rose Radgoski
Dec. 31, 2002
Rose Ann Radgoski, age 91, of Reynolds St., Plymouth, PA, died on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002 at the Kingston Commons. Born Sept. 1, 1911 in Plymouth, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Frencesca Wojnarski. She was a graduate of Plymouth High School. She was a member of St. Mary’s-St. Stephen’s Church Community of Plymouth and had been a former member of the St. Mary’s choir. She was also a former member of the St. Mary’s PTA. Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Radgoski had been employed by the Cornet Fashions in the Lee Park section of Hanover Township for many years and was a member of the ILGWU.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John, who died in 1973; brothers, Joseph and John and sisters, Bridget Dopko, Sister Mary Ottona and Mary Perkowski.
Surviving are her children, Ruth Ann Strzepek, with whom she resided and Daniel Radgoski of Meshoppen; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral was held on Friday, Jan. 3 at 8:30 from the S.J. Grotkowski Funeral Home, 530 West Main St., Plymouth, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in St. Mary’s Nativity Church, Plymouth. Interment was in the parish Cemetery , Plymouth Township. Friends called Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m.

Laurence Pierson
Dec. 17, 2002
Laurence Pierson, 64, East Rush, PA, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002 in Liberty Township, Susquehanna County, PA.
He was born in Montrose, PA, to Irene (Shaver) Pierson, East Rush, PA, and the late Fred W. Pierson, who passed away in 1979.
Larry graduated from Rush High School in 1956, served in the U.S. Army and worked for Bendix Corporation. He was a member of the East Rush Methodist Church, the American Legion Gardner-Warner Post No. 154 and past member of the Masons, Warren Lodge No. 240 F & AM, Montrose. He loved to golf and fish.
Besides his mother, a brother and sister-in-law, Randy and Debra Pierson, East Rush; two nephews, Fred and Byron Pierson; an aunt, Kathleen LaRue, East Rush and several cousins survive Larry.
Funeral services were held Dec. 20 at the Daniel K. Regan Funeral Home, Montrose, with Pastor Larry Russell of the East Rush Methodist Church, officiating. Interment was in East Rush Cemetery , Rush Twp. Visitation was held Dec. 19 at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the American Legion Gardner-Warner Post #154, RR4, Box 223C, Montrose, PA 18801.

Harold Manning
Jan. 2, 2003
Harold Ray Manning, 74, of 22 Manning Road, Tunkhannock, PA, passed away on Thursday morning, Jan. 2, 2003 at the Tyler Memorial Hospital in Tunkhannock.
Born in Mehoopany on July 25, 1928, he was the son of the late Edson and Matilda Engelman Manning.
He was married to the former Marian Page and they celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary on Nov. 10, 2002.
Harold was a graduate of Mehoopany High School and was a dairy farmer. A member of the National Rifle Association, he loved to spend time on his farm and enjoyed hunting.
He belonged to the Biblical Baptist Church in Meshoppen.
Survivors include his wife, Marian; two sons, Kevin of Tunkhannock and Roger of Suffolk, VA; one daughter, Donna Archer of Factoryville; three brothers, Stewart of Meshoppen, Robert, Arizona and Edward, Tunkhannock; one sister, Dorothy Rogers, Nicholson, four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Byron.
Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family at the Biblical Baptist Church, Briar Ridge Road, Meshoppen, with Rev. Gary Myers, pastor officiating. Interment will be in Vaughan Cemetery , Mehoopany. There were no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Biblical Baptist Church, Briar Ridge Road, Meshoppen, PA 18630.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Harding-Litwin Funeral Home, 123 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock.

Louise LaFrance
Dec. 23, 2002
Mrs. Louise B. LaFrance, age 75, of RR4, Box 4050, Allen St., Meshoppen, PA, passed away at the V.N.A. Hospice of Lackawanna County in the Community Medical Center, Scranton, on Monday evening, Dec. 23, 2002.
Born in Meshoppen on Oct. 18, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Jennie Phillips Bunnell. Mrs. LaFrance was the wife of the late Boyd C. LaFrance, who passed away on June 25, 1987.
Louise was a graduate of the Meshoppen High School, Class of 1945 and also a graduate of Robert Packer Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1948. In her younger years, she was a registered nurse at Tyler Memorial Hospital in Meshoppen.
She was a member of the Meshoppen United Methodist Church and was also a member of the Eastern Star, Meshoppen Chapter #70. For many years, Louise was Meshoppen Borough tax collector, retiring in 2000.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Tim (Tracie) McGavin of Meshoppen; a brother, Max E. Bunnell, Meshoppen; two grandchildren, Timothy and Kayla McGavin, both of Meshoppen; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Gerald and Dorothy LaFrance, Wyalusing and Ronald and Ruth LaFrance, Oswego, NY; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Wendy Lee LaFrance, who passed away on April 28, 1990.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 28 at 11 a.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Meshoppen, with Rev. Dan Herron of the Meshoppen United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment was in the Overfield Cemetery in Meshoppen.
Friends and family called at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. Eastern Star services were held on Friday evening at the funeral home at 8:30 p.m., conducted by the members of the Eastern Star, Meshoppen Chapter #70.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing, may make memorial donations to the Meshoppen United Methodist Church or to the Meshoppen Fire Company.
