Mrs. Eugenia Estelle Steafather, 91, of El Cajon, CA, formerly of Dushore, PA, died on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001 at Alvardo Hospital, San Diego, CA.
Estelle was born on Nov. 25, 1910 to Maynard Henry and Maude Agethal Stevens Steele in Wilmot Township, Bradford County, PA. She attended the New Albany Vocational High School and continued on to graduate from Scranton School of Beauty. She married Gale Steafather on March 18, 1943. He predeceased her on Dec. 28, 1991.
Estelle and Gale lived on German Street in Dushore where she owned and operated a Gift Boutique and Beauty Shoppe until Gale’s transfer in 1969 to Foremost Dairy, San Diego, CA.
She was a member of the Melody Lane Lutheran Church in El Cajon and formerly a member of Zion’s Chapel Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Dushore. She was also a member of the Wyalusing Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Estelle was predeceased by her daughter, Harriet Steafather-Morrissey, July 21, 2001, her sister, Vuriel Robinson Browning, May 31, 1992 and an infant brother, Henry Steele.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, William and Rebecca Steafather of Groton, CT; granddaughters, Sheryl and Amy Steafather of Groton, CT; great-granddaughters, Emily and Maggie Hedrick of Groton, CT a son-in-law, Roy Morrissey of Springfield, NJ and two nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 29 at 10 a.m. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St. in Dushore, with the Rev. Eddie A. Nilsen, pastor of Zion Chapel, officiating. Interment
will be in Fairview Cemetery , Dushore.
Clifford E. Palmer

Clifford E. Palmer, age 91, of DarWay Nursing Home in Estella, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001 at Towanda Memorial Hospital after an illness. He was a former resident of Lynn, PA.
Born on June 23, 1910 in Rush, he was a son of the late Harry and Ethel Garrison Palmer.
He was married to Helen Lyman, who predeceased him on Feb. 12, 1994.
He was employed as a milk tester and dairy farmer.
A graduate of Springville High School, he also attended Delhi Agricultural College.
Mr. Palmer was a former member of the Lynn Independent Order of Odd Fellows, D.H.I.A. and Dairy Tester’s Association. He also belonged to the Springville Vol. Fire Co.
Survivors include a daughter, Gertrude Gunnoe, Norfolk, MS; four sons, Clifford, DarWay Nursing Home, Forksville, A. Lyman and Fay, Springville, Rev. Stephen of Flanders, NJ; a sister, Mrs. Jean Bunnell of Springville; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Gertrude and three brothers, Bruce, Clifton and Theron.
Services will be held at Lynn Community Church on Saturday, Dec. 29 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Edwin Simmons of the Lemon United Methodist Church officiating.
Interment will be in Lynn Cemetery .
Friends and family may call one hour prior to the services at the church.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Harding-Litwin Funeral Home, 123 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock.
Roger M. Moore

Roger M. Moore, 41, died on Friday, Dec. 7, 2001 in Rush Township, as a result of a hunting accident. Born Oct. 31, 1960 in Sayre, he was the son of Gordon and Jean M. Blend Moore, who live in Rush. On June 23, 1984, he was married to Terry Ann Shaffer, who survives.
A 1978 graduate of Elk Lake High School, he was an independent truck driver who hauled cattle to the Taylor Packing Company, Inc.
He was a member of the Rush Volunteer Fire Company and enjoyed hunting, NASCAR and four wheeling.
In addition to his wife and parents, survivors include his baby daughter, Rachel Lee, at home; sisters and brothers-in-law, Deborah and Steve Grow of Factoryville, Patricia and Richard Stastny of Erieville, NY; a brother and sister-in-law, Gordon, Jr. and Marie Moore of Lawton; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Betty Shaffer of Camptown; sisters-in-law and their spouses, Tammy and Michael Darling of Rush, Lori Lee and Daniel Barr of New Albany; a brother-in-law, Robert Shaffer, Jr. of Rush; nephews and spouses, Gordon "Mac" and Lisa Moore, III, Chad Moore, Alan and Erica Grow, Sean and Sherry Grow, Jason Stastny, Dennis Moore, Jr., Dean Moore, Brian Darling, Snyder Barr; nieces and spouse, Stephanie and Sargent Gregory, Ashley Moore, Kelly Darling; several great-nephews and nieces, aunts, uncles and cousins.
A brother, Dennis Moore, and a sister, Linda Moore, predeceased him.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at the Bartron Funeral Home, Inc., 74 Church St., Montrose. The family received friends on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family provided their own flowers and suggests that memorial contributions be sent to his daughter, Rachel’s college fund, c/o Grange National Bank, Lawton, PA 18828.
Rachel Wells Meyers

Mrs. Rachel Wells Meyers, age 86, of Wyalusing, PA, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001 at the Skilled Nursing Unit of the Memorial Hospital, Towanda.
Rachel was born in Wyalusing on April 8, 1915, daughter of the late Francis and Emma Ruff Wells. She graduated from the Wyalusing High School, a member of the Class of 1931. She received her BS in Education from the Wilson College in Chambersburg in 1935. She taught junior high in Towanda from 1936 to 1941. Rachel then moved to Great Neck, LI where she began teaching at the Great Neck Middle School in 1941. While teaching at Great Neck, Rachel received her MS from Columbia University in New York City. In 1970, she retired from Great Neck after 29 years of service and moved back to Wyalusing.
Rachel was married to Milton Meyers of Flushing, NY in 1952 and he predeceased her in 1968.
Rachel was a resident of the Wyalusing Personal Care Home for the past two years.
She was a member of the Wyalusing Presbyterian Church.
Surviving is one sister, Marion Wells of Sayre.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at 11:30 a.m. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing, with the Rev. Barry R. Ballard, her pastor, officiating. Interment
was in the Wyalusing Cemetery .
Friends called on Wednesday morning from 11 a.m. until the time of the service.

Mr. Francis A. Lockburner, age 79, formerly of Laceyville, PA, passed away in Pittston on Nov. 18, 2001.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate the life of Francis at a memorial service that will be held on Friday evening, Dec. 7 at 8 p.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville. Officiating will be Mr. Wayne Salsman of the Braintrim Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
Wheaton D. Fassett, Sr.

Mr. Wheaton D. Fassett, Sr., age 73, of Valley Crest Nursing Center, Wilkes-Barre, formerly of Jenningsville, PA, passed away on Monday afternoon, Dec. 3, 2001 at the Valley Crest Nursing Center. Mr. Fassett had been a resident of the center for the last 15 years.
He was born in Jenningsville on Oct. 14, 1928, the son of the late David Wheaton and Hattie Bronson Fassett. For most of his life, he was a self-employed carpenter in the Wyoming County area.
Surviving are a daughter, Cathy Hamner of Kirkwood, NY; four sons, Allen Fassett of Laceyville, Mark Fassett of Harpursville, NY, Wheaton Fassett, Jr. and Timothy Fassett, both of Mehoopany; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Wayne David Fassett and Stephen Fassett.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday morning, Dec. 6 at 11 a.m. from the Forkston Cemetery in Forkston, with Pastor Doug Mills of the Lovelton Bible Church, officiating.
Arrangements were made through the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville.
Byron W. "Bob" Wilbur

Byron W. "Bob" Wilbur, 96, of Spring Hill, Wyalusing RR1, formerly of Towanda, PA, passed away of declining health Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001 at the Skilled Nursing Unit, Memorial Hospital, Towanda, while under the care of the staff of whom he had grown so fond over the years.
Born in Burlington Township on May 10, 1905, he was the son of Howard and Nellie Spencer Wilbur.
In 1926, he married Eleanor Kerrick, who passed away in 1972. Bob and Eleanor had four children, Marjorie, Janice, Richard and Ginny.
In 1974, Bob married Pauline Bride, who passed away in 1999. When his health began to fail, he moved to the home of Ginny and Dan Mathis on Spring Hill and enjoyed participating in community activities.
Mr. Wilbur spent most of his life in the automotive industry. The last thirty years of his employment were spent as service manager for Perry Motor Co., later to become Ferrario’s. These years brought to him a host of friends and acquaintances. He loved to tell stories of his experiences to his family, which were actually a depiction of the development of the automotive industry, as well as the Towanda-Wysox area.
Spending most of his early years on the Burlington farm of A.C. Spencer, his grandfather, Mr. Wilbur maintained an avid interest in farming all his life.
Until the age of 91, Bob enjoyed a large garden. Jigsaw puzzles were a favorite pastime and his completed, framed puzzles decorated his room in Skilled Nursing. The staff members throughout the facility would run in to put a piece in or to admire the newest completed puzzle, he enjoyed this interaction very much.
Surviving are his children, Marjorie Tompkins of Hampton, FL, Janice and Michael Soloway of Myrtle Beach, SC, Ginny and Dan Mathis of Spring Hill, Richard Wilbur of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Ruth Young, Towanda; a special friend, Connie Wilson of Laceyville.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Leonard Wilbur.
The family received friends on Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda. A recitation of the rosary was held Friday evening at 8:45 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Ronald Hughes leading the prayers.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday, Dec. 1 at 11 a.m. at the SS Peter and Paul Church, Third St., Towanda, with the Rev. Ronald Hughes as celebrant. Assisting at the altar were Rachel Christian and Jenny Joyce. Instrumentalist was Joel Christian. Readers were Lindy and Lindsay Cole. Giftbearers were Kevin Cole and Michael Mathis.
Interment was in the French Asylum Cemetery , Asylum Township.
Pallbearers were Michael Mathis, Daniel Mathis, Dr. E. Barton Young, James Lordi, Kevin Cole and David McDonough.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be directed to Skilled Nursing Unit, Memorial Hospital, One Hospital Drive, Towanda, PA 18848 in Mr. Wilbur’s memory.
David G. Snell

David G. Snell, 77, well-known former Wysox businessman, passed away on Thursday evening, Nov. 29, 2001 at his home in Lake Wales, FL following an apparent heart attack.
Born Feb. 26, 1924 in Towanda, he was a son of the late Paul and Daisy Sill Snell.
David was a graduate of Towanda High School in June of 1942 and subsequently served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre as a metal smith aboard the USS Essex in the Marine Fighting Squadron 124. This squadron was the first Marine squadron to operate from a carrier. They were also the first squadron to operate the F4U Consair during World War II. He participated in Luzon, Iwo Jima and strikes against Japan operations. Following his honorable discharge from the military as a sergeant TAD, in February of 1946, he entered the Mansfield State Teachers College where he graduated, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in education. He later received his Masters degree in education at Bucknell University.
On Aug. 26, 1946, he married the former Marie Baumunk.
Mr. Snell taught mathematics at the Canton High School for several years and also coached J.V. basketball. He later went to work for the Chrysler Corporation as a zone manager and in 1958 opened the Chrysler, Plymouth, Dodge, International Dealership in Wysox, which he operated for many years. In 1975, David and his son, Greg formed Snell Auto Sales in Wysox and continued working with Greg in the automobile busiuness until his retirement in 1987.
He was a former member of the Towanda Area School Board and a life member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 2191, Towanda. He was a member of Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 and its Last Man’s Club and Beirne-Webster VFW Post No. 1568, Towanda. David enjoyed playing golf, camping and square dancing with his wife, Marie as they were members of the Grand Paraders Square Dancing Club for many years.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years on Nov. 1, 1999 and a sister, Gladys Scott. David also loved to drive, hunt and fish. He enjoyed Penn State football, NASCAR and shopping.
Surviving are a daughter and her close friend, Robin Stevens and Ken Lippy of Aylett, VA; a son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Cheryl Snell of Towanda RR5; a daughter and son-in-law, Tracy and Douglas Fay of Columbia Cross Roads, RR3; five grandchildren, Adam and Avery Snell, Arian, Kevin and David Fay; a sister and brother-in-law, Pauline and Lester Hawbaker of Chambersburg; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Kate Snell of Towanda; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; his favorite canine companion "Hildy."
The family received friends on Monday, Dec. 3 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda. Towanda Elks Lodge No. 2191 held a memorial service on Monday evening at 6:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
The funeral service was held on Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Roger Griffith, pastor of the Wysox Presbyterian Church, officiating.
Interment followed in the Wysox Cemetery with the Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 according full military honors.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Towanda American Legion Post No. 42, 912 Main St., Towanda, PA 18848 in memory of David G. Snell.
Robert Rosencrance

Mr. Robert Rosencrance, Sr., age 82, of RR2, Box 2960, Laceyville, PA (North Flat), passed away at the Highlands in Laporte early Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001.
Born in Laceyville on April 6, 1919, he was the son of the late Ira and Mattie Heberling Rosencrance.
Mr. Rosencrance was a graduate of Laceyville High School, Class of 1936.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served with the 88th Infantry Division in Italy during World War II, from 1945 until 1946. He was employed for many years as a salesman for Vandervort Mills in Laceyville until its closure in the mid-1970s. He later was employed by the Laceyville Agway until his retirement in 1981.
Mr. Rosencrance was a member of the Rought-Hall American Legion Post #510 of Black Walnut.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, the former Anita Harrison; a daughter, Ellen Cornell of Laceyville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert, Jr. and Sandy Rosencrance of Woodstock, GA, Alan and Susan Rosencrance of New Market, MD and Albert and Wen Rosencrance of Great Falls, VA; four grandsons, two granddaughters and three great-grandchildren; also several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Marie Foote and three brothers, Francis Rosencrance, Boyd Rosencrance and Lawrence Rosencrance.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville with Rev. Charles Bishop, of the Elk Lake Community Church, officiating. Interment
will be in the Lacey St. Cemetery , Laceyville.
Family and friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
Graveside military services will be conducted by members of the Rought-Hall Post 510, American Legion and the VFW Endless Mountains Post #3583.

Harold W. Hower, 87, died at 6:20 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001 at Elizabeth Church Manor, Binghamton, NY.
He was born in Berwick March 31, 1914, a son of the late John A. and Daisy Folk Hower.
He had resided in Laceyville and prior to that in Flagler Beach, FL and Bloomsburg.
He was employed by the IBM Corp. in Endicott, NY until retiring.
He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Pauline Reese Hower and a brother, Allen Hower.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Ted (Marion) Demaree of Quaker Lake; nieces and nephew.
Private services were held with burial at Elan Memorial Park, Bloomsburg, under the direction of Heller Funeral Home, Nescopeck.
