Susanna "Susie" E. Burgess of Mehoopany, PA, passed away on Tuesday evening, Nov. 27, 2001 at the Tyler Memorial Hospital in Tunkhannock. She was born in Mehoopany on June 10, 1917, a daughter of the late Arthur and Florence Place Henning.
She was a graduate of Mehoopany High School, Class of 1935, member of the Mehoopany United Methodist Church and the Mehoopany Ladies Auxiliary of Tyler Memorial Hospital where she served as volunteer in the Kozy Corner Shack Shop.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore G. Burgess on Dec. 13, 1982 and brothers, Donald and A. Phillip Henning.
Surviving are sons, Steve Burgess of Mehoopany, Jerry Burgess of Bear Creek; daughter, Donna Rettke of Mehoopany; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. from the Mehoopany United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Catherine Parsons, pastor of the church, officiating. Interment
will be held on Friday at the Vaughan Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Nicholas T. Carnevale

Mr. Nicholas T. Carnevale, age 75, of RR1, Box 1803, Laceyville, PA (Black Walnut) passed away on Tuesday evening, Nov. 27, 2001 at the Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton after an illness.
Born in Scranton on Sept. 9, 1926, he was the son of the late Nicholas P. and Mildred Palumbo Carnevale. Mr. Carnevale was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy as a Carpenter’s Mate Third Class, from 1944 until 1946.
He was employed for many years by the Pennsylvania Railroad until 1960. Nick then became a flooring installer, working for many different carpet stores in Wyoming County. In 1985 he opened Carnevale Carpet in Black Walnut, where he sold and installed carpet, along with his son, for many years until his retirement in 1993. He then sold the business in 1994 to his son and daughter-in-law, Nicholas, Jr. and Kathy Carnevale, current owners today.
Nick was a member of the St. Joachim’s Roman Catholic Church in Meshoppen and a very active member of the Rought Hall Post #510 American Legion in Black Walnut. Having served on many boards and holding many offices throughout his membership, he was on the board of directors and the finance officer. He was an integral part in bringing the Black Walnut Legion to what it is today. Nick was responsible for the renovations to the legion hall and for the new bingo hall. He was a major part of organizing all of the legion events including Cow Pie Bingo, Steak Bakes and Chicken Barbecues. He also was the founder of the Black Walnut Rod and Reel Club. He enjoyed many days fishing the Susquehanna River between Laceyville and Meshoppen, with many fishing buddies.
Nick is survived by his long-time companion, Betty Kitchnefski of Black Walnut; a son and daughter-in-law, Nicholas, Jr. and Kathy Carnevale of Meshoppen; daughters, Arvilla Carnevale and Mrs. Louis (Gail) Hilbert, both of Orlando, FL and Joanna Carnevale of Dunedin, FL; two sisters, Mrs. Paul (Ann) Gapen of Cheyenne, WY and Mrs. Joan Lenegar of Del Ray Beach, FL; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 10:30 a.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Meshoppen, with a Mass of Christian Burial at the St. Joachim’s Roman Catholic Church in Meshoppen at 11 a.m. with Father Joseph J. Manarchuck of the church, officiating. Interment
will be in Lacey Street Cemetery .
Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, Nov. 30 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m., with a Vigil Service to be held at 8 p.m., Friday evening.
Graveside military services will be conducted by the members of the Rought Hall Post #510 American Legion and the VFW Endless Mountains Post #3583.

Stanislaw Iwanowski

Stanislaw Iwanowski, age 80, of Sullivan Terrace, Dushore, PA passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001 at The Highlands in Laporte, PA.
Stan was born in Poland on Feb. 14, 1921, son of the late Stanley and Paula Zalewskicz Iwanowski. He and his wife, Frances resided in New Jersey for many years where Stan worked as a pipe cutter for the Swepco Pipe Co. of Clifton, NJ. Frances predeceased him in 1993.
Stan moved to Wyalusing and then to Sullivan Terrace in 1998.
He was a member of St. Basil’s Catholic Church in Dushore.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, John and Aniela Iwanowski, Pocono Summit; a son-in-law, Benny F. Duzak, Schenectady, NY; three grandsons; four granddaughters; eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Donna Duzak in 1999.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 11 a.m. from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, and will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 at St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, with the Rev. Michael B. Harris, his pastor, presiding. Interment
will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery , South Hackensack, NJ.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Joyce E. (McCarthy) Sherman

Joyce E. (McCarthy) Sherman, 70, of Vestal, NY, went to be with the Lord on Monday morning, Nov. 19, 2001 a the home of her daughter, surrounded by her loving family.
She was predeceased by her parents, Donald and Doris McCarthy; brothers, David and James.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Vicki and Ron Nemcek, Endwell, NY, Tami and Dave Brown, Johnson City, NY; a son, Larry Paradis; her guys, the light of her life, grandsons, Ryan and Brent Nemcek; granddaughters, Stacey and Melia Brown; four sisters and a brother-in-law, Jeanne and Duane Powers, Birchardville, Marion Bollinger, Tunkhannock, Peggy Watts and Patricia Wescott, both of Lawton; a special aunt, Grace Merritt; a special niece, Megan; several nieces and nephews and special friends, too numerous to mention and her faithful companion, Muffin.
She was a member of St. Ambrose Church, Endicott.
A retired employee of the Binghamton Psychiatric Center, Joyce will be missed for her love of cooking and always being there to lend a compassionate ear.
Funeral services were held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. from the Coleman & Daniels Funeral Home, Inc., 300 E. Main St., Endicott, with a funeral mass at 10 a.m. at St. Ambrose Church. Entombment was in Calvary Cemetery , Johnson City.
The family received friends at the funeral home on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Thomas B. Eberlin, of Binghamton, NY, age 73, passed away on Friday, Nov. 23, 2001 at Lourdes Hospital. He was born Sept. 4, 1928 in Waverly, NY.
He was predeceased by his parents, George and Lucretia and a grandson, Michael Eberlin.
He was a member of the Glen Castle United Methodist Church, where he was an active member for many years. He was a faithful and loving husband, father and grandparent. He loved his church and church family.
He was employed by Spaulding Bakeries for many years and retired from Bob Murphy, Inc. He loved camping, gardening and traveling with his wife. A Boy Scout leader for many years, he was a trustee of Glen Castle United Methodist Church, a member of Southern Tier Good Sam Club, United Methodist Campers and Family Motorcoach Camping Clubs.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Cleo Eberlin of Binghamton; one daughter, Gail Heath of Norfolk, VA; one son, Richard Eberlin of Sugar Run; four grandchildren, Jonah and Heather Eberlin of Laceyville, Bryan Eberlin of Sugar Run and Tina Heath of Jacksonville, NC; two great-grandchildren, Dakota Eberlin of Laceyville and Helena Heath of Jacksonville, NC; a sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Gerald Hibbard of Thousand Oaks, CA; his father-in-law, Charles VerBryck of Sugar Run; two nieces, several cousins and many friends.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. at Quicks Bend Cemetery , Sugar Run. A memorial service will be held on Dec. 8 at Glen Castle United Methodist Church, Rt. 11, Castle Creek with Rev. William Puckey, pastor, officiating.

Elizabeth Schoonover Thornton

Elizabeth Schoonover Thornton, formerly of Wyalusing, PA, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001 after a brief illness at the age of 95 in Richmond, VA.
She was born in Athens, PA on Sept. 3, 1906, a daughter of James Avert Schoonover and Harriet Layman Schoonover. The family later moved to Lime Hill.
One brother, John H. Schoonover, preceded her in death on Dec. 9, 1976; her father in 1921 and mother in 1965.
Elizabeth attended Camptown High School, Columbia University and Clifton Springs Sanitarium School of Nursing where she graduated in 1928.
She married Carroll F. Thornton on July 24, 1930 in Geneva, NY and resided there until 1943. She moved later that year to Long Island, NY and worked as a registered nurse for the Department of Mental Hygiene until retiring in April 1971 as a nurse supervisor after 28 years. After retirement she resided in Wyalusing until March 1991 when she moved to The Virginian Retirement Home in Richmond, VA.
She was an avid horsewoman and a member of Smith Town Long Island Hunt Club for several years. Also, she was a great fan of baseball’s New York Mets and a charter member of The Lady Mets. Elizabeth was a member of St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church in Richmond, VA.
She is survived by a loving daughter-in-law, Nancy L. Thornton of Midlothian, VA (widow of eldest son, Carroll who died in 1993), twin sons, John S. Thornton of Carthage, NY, Richard J. Thornton of CA, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind several dear friends, Becky and Donnie Burgess of Wyalusing, PA, and Jerry S. Woo of Richmond, VA.
A graveside service will be held at the Camptown Cemetery , Camptown, PA on Dec. 4 at 11 a.m.
Dr. Francis Homet Vaughan

Dr. Francis Homet Vaughan, 85, of Riverside, PA, died early Saturday morning Nov. 24, 2001 at the Vintage Knolls, Danville, PA where he had resided since Sept. 2001. He formerly resided at 16 West Market St., Danville.
He was born July 9, 1916 in Homets Ferry, Bradford County, PA, the son of the late Frank and Geraldine Homet Vaughan. He graduated from Camptown High School and Hastings College in Nebraska. He also graduated from Temple University where he received his D.D.S. Dr. Vaughan also served two years as a Major in the United States Army Dental Corps during the Korean Conflict.
He was self-employed as a dentist at 111 Mill St., Danville from 1940 until his retirement in 1984. Dr. Vaughan was a member of the Mahoning Presbyterian Church in Danville where he served as an elder. He was a member of Danville Lodge #224 F&AM for over 50 years and the Caldwell Consistory in Bloomsburg. He was a lifetime member of the Danville Elks for over 60 years. Dr. Vaughan was also a member of the Tri-County Dental Society. He was a member of the Sandy Run Hunting Camp for over 50 years, Southside Fire Company in Riverside and a member of the Montour County Historical Society. He was an original member of the Frosty Valley Country Club and served 12 years on the Danville School Board. He volunteered at the Maria Joseph Manor as an escort. He was a supporter and a descendant of French Azilum in Bradford County. Dr. Vaughan was raised on a farm and always enjoyed farming and gardening.
Dr. Vaughan was married March 24, 1940 to the late Roberta Shaw Vaughan for 59 years, who died Sept. 12, 1999. Survivors include three daughters, Janice Eldridge Bye of Wenonah, NJ, Gerre E. Vecchiola of Greensburg and Roberta S. Maggs of Danville; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Nancy Magill on Feb. 2, 1999.
A memorial service was held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Mahoning Presbyterian Church, East Mahoning and Ferry Streets, Danville with his pastor, the Reverend Judson S. Bennett, officiating.
Burial will be private in the Homets Ferry Cemetery .
Friends were received on Tuesday evening, Nov. 27 from 6 to 9 p.m. from the Miller-Visneski Funeral Home, 10 West Mahoning St., Danville.

James E. Price

James E. Price, 87, of Wysox, and formerly of Newport Township, Luzerne County, PA died on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001 at Memorial Hospital, Towanda, where he had been a patient for 10 days.
Born on June 9, 1914 in Sugar Notch, he was a son of the late James and Alice Hudson Price. He graduated from the former Newport Township High School in 1932.
Mr. Price was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theater of Operations in the 26th Infantry, First Division. He attained the rank of tech sergeant.
Prior to retiring in 1984, he had been county assessor for Luzerne County for several years and formerly was the executive director of the Luzerne County Redevelopment Authority. He had also previously served as secretary-treasurer for Newport Township for over 30 years.
He was a former member of Newport Township Lions Club and was instrumental in the forming of Newport Township Little League Baseball. He later became a sectional director for Little League in the state of Pennsylvania.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Cecil Price and sisters, Thelma Gress and Gladys Pearce.
Surviving are his daughters, Sarah Price and M. Carole Pfifferling; several nieces and nephews and companion and special friend, Emma Whitney of Wysox.
Private graveside services were held in Oak Lawn Cemetery , Wilkes-Barre, with Andrea McDonnell, pastor of Newport United Methodist Church, Alden, officiating. There were no calling hours.

Mrs. Anna E. Delovich, age 86, of Lopez, PA died on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001 at The Highlands, Laporte.
Anna was born on Feb. 13, 1915 in Lopez, a daughter of the late Thomas and Efemia Demanovich Elchak. She attended schools in Lopez and later moved to New Jersey. She married the Peter Delovich of Lopez, who predeceased her on Nov. 25, 1984.
She lived and worked in Bristol, CT for many years and later lived in Elmira, NY. She then returned to Lopez and worked as a sewing machine operator in Lopez at the former Weldon Mfg. Co. at Endicott-Johnson Shoe Factory in Mildred and Dushore Lingerie and Sulcraft in Dushore.
She was a very loving and devoted mother and grandmother.
A member of St. Vladimir’s Russian Orthodox Church in Lopez, she also was a member of I.L.G.W.U.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas P. and Elaine Delovich, Wyalusing; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Allen Williams, Lopez; one granddaughter, Jacqueline Delovich of New York City; three grandsons, Timothy Delovich, Centenary College, Hackettstown, NJ and Allen K. Williams, III and Matthew P. Williams, both of Lopez; a sister, Alice Shepard, Blue Hill, ME; brothers and sisters-in-law, Leo and Dolores Elchak, Lopez, Michael and Anne Elchak of Monroeton; a sister-in-law, Cora Elchak of Lopez.
Burial services were held on Friday, Nov. 23 at 1 p.m. at St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Church, Lopez with Hieromonk Michael Thier, her pastor, presiding. Interment
was in St. Vladimir’s Cemetery , Lopez.
Friends called on Thursday evening, Nov. 22 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore. There was a Parastas Service on Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
