Ellis "Red" Howland, 81, of 102 Burlington Drive, Monroeton, PA, passed away on Monday, Feb. 10, 2003 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Pete Bahr, with whom he resided.
Born May 17, 1921 in Herrick Township, he was the son of the late DeWitt and Ruth Rought Howland. "Red," as he was known by his many friends, grew up in the Herrick Township and Camptown area. In early years, Red was employed in farming and also worked at E.I. DuPont in Towanda and Masonite Corporation in Wysox. He was later employed in construction and carpentry work. Red was known for his woodworking skills. He made shelves, shadow boxes, etc., and for many years traveled to craft shows, making several friends.
Red was a devoted father to his children throughout their lives, supporting them through their school years and activities. He took pride in seeing them grow into adults and start families of their own. He enjoyed having his grandchildren around him and always had a smile for them.
Surviving are his children and their spouses, Diane and Pete Bahr of Monroeton, Gary and Beth Howland of Virginia, Genie and Tom Wines of Muncy; his grandchildren and their spouses, Jeff and Theresa Beaumont of Monroeton, Kris and Denise Howland of Gillett, Carrie Howland and her fiance, Jared, Jeremy and Tara Gardner of Rome, Michael Howland and Adam Howland, both of Virginia, Alissa Wines of Muncy, Billy Middlesworth of Muncy, Chad Wines of Muncy; his great-grandchildren, Zoe McKernan of Monroeton, Kris Howland of Gillett, Kameron Gardner or Rome; his sister, Shirley Wright of Senior Citizens Center, Towanda; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his son, Craig A. Howland on Oct. 16, 1994 and a sister, June Howland Light.
The family received friends Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda. The funeral and committal services were held at 8 p.m. in Wednesday at the funeral home with Pastor Michael Bahr of the Franklindale Christian Church, officiating. Interment was in the Camptown Cemetery .
The family suggests that memorial contributions be directed to the Franklindale Christian Church or to the charity or organization of one’s choice in Ellis "Red" Howland’s memory.
Vera Anthony

Mrs. Vera Anthony, age 94, of Vestal, NY passed away on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at the Hilltop Retirement Home in Johnson City.
Vera was born in Lopez on Feb. 3, 1909, daughter of the late Andrew and Suzanne Hyduchek Huray. She graduated from the Lopez High School and marriage Alfred A. Anthony of Newark, NJ. They resided in Vestal.
Vera retired as a secretary for the Endicott Johnson Shoe Mfg. Co. of Johnson City. She and Alfred spent many winters in Florida and also traveled extensively throughout the world. Alfred predeceased her on Dec. 23, 1996.
She was a member of St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Church in Lopez.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews. Vera was predeceased by four sisters, Anne Reo and Mary Kemick of Johnson City; Lucille Church of Maplewood, NJ and an infant, Helen of Lopez; three brothers, Joseph Huray and Andrew Huray of Johnson City and infant, John Huray of Lopez.
Burial services were held on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 10 a.m. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, with the Hieromonk Michael Thier, her pastor, officiating. Interment was in St. Vladimir’s Cemetery, Lopez.
Friends called at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.
Donald DeWitt

Donald Jacob DeWitt, age 89, well-known excavator and long-time resident of Camptown, PA, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003 at the Memorial Hospital in Towanda.
Don was born in Jenningsville on Aug. 14, 1913, a son of the late John Jacob and Addie Mansfield DeWitt. He entered the U.S. Army and earned the rank of Sergeant. He served from 1943 to 1946 during World War II. He marriage the former Bette Herman of Rushville on June 28, 1943.
Donald specialized in the construction field his entire working career. From 1946 to 1960, he worked for the Giffin Construction Company in Rushville. He then started his own excavating company. He was very well-known as a pond builder throughout the area, retiring in 1976.
He was a member of the Camptown United Methodist Church and a member of Wyalusing American Legion Post #534.
Surviving are his spouse, Bette, at home; a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis A. and Peggy DeWitt of Stevensville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy L. and Roy Preston, Herrickville and Sharon A. and Jim Jones of Lawton; a brother-in-law, Hollis (Pat) and wife, Jean Herman of Evergreen; sisters-in-law, Shirley and husband, Art Hartman of Newark Valley, NY and Marie Jenner of Wyalusing; six grandchildren, Brenda A. and Timothy Ferguson of Herrickville, Michelle A. DeWitt and her special friend, William Douglas of Durham, NC, Christopher A. and Shannon DeWitt of Naples, FL, P. Scott and Christine Baldwin of Hartford, Shana L. and Frank Kamarauskas of Rushville and Jason D. and Morgin Jones of Lawton; 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his beloved sister and husband, Catherine and Paul Deubler; brothers-in-law and their wives, Paul and Margaret Herman, Carlton and Mildred Herman and Clifford Herman.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 11 a.m. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing, with the Rev. Wade Clauser, pastor of the Hope Baptist Church, officiating. Interment was in the Camptown Cemetery. Pallbearers were Tim Ferguson, Jason Jones, Christopher DeWitt, Roy Herman, Don Detrick and Paul Lutz.
Graveside military honors were accorded by the members of Wyalusing American Legion Post #534. Members of the honor guard were: Bill Zaner, Robert Stevens, Dewey Cokely, Ray Huffman, Robert Morris, Jim Marshall, Carlton Repsher, Wayne Morrow, Howard Patton and Tony Turner.
Friends called at the funeral home on Friday, Feb. 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10:30 to the time of the service.
The family provided their own flowers and friends may direct memorial contributions to the Wyalusing Ambulance Association, PO Box 787, Wyalusing, PA 18853.
Harold Williams

Harold F. Williams, Sr., age 78, of Cherry Township, Dushore, RR1, PA, passed away at his home late Saturday evening, Feb. 1, 2003.
He was born in Wysox on Oct. 14, 1924, a son of the late Harry K. and Freda Shaylor Williams.
Mr. Williams was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during World War II.
On Jan. 14, 1955, he marriage the former Eva Marie Willmeth. His wife preceded him in death on Dec. 17, 1984.
Mr. Williams was a longtime resident of the Towanda area until moving to Ohio in the early 1950s.
Harold and his family moved to Dushore in 1968 from Elmore, OH. At this time, Harold drove truck and continued to travel thousands and thousands of miles until his retirement from Towanda Beverage Company in 1986.
Harold enjoyed everything about life and found good in everyone he met. His belief was everyone should accept that we are all different and should make great efforts to get along.
His love for music was just one of his many joys in life.
His musical talent of singing and being able to play any musical instrument brought joy to everyone who listened-he enjoyed playing with the boys in his band, "Mel and the Drifters."
Harold loved people and found much joy and happiness in being Grampy to all his wonderful grandchildren.
He left surviving his eight children and spouses, Harold F. Williams, Jr. of Buffalo, NY, Terry A. Williams of New Albany, David L. Williams of New Albany, Mary L. and David Lupold of Lewisberry, Debra L. and Donald Boecker of Forksville, Margieanne and Larry Stoudt of Dushore, Timothy R. Williams of New Albany, Tina M. and Matt McGroarty of New Albany; a very special loving friend, Lucy Hemenway of Towanda; brothers and sister-in-law, Lewis and Barb Williams of Mountain Lake, Roger Williams of Pottstown; sisters and brothers-in-law, Reva Rine of Muncy, Shirley and Alan Mathews of Waverly, NY, Pat and Jim Kent of Durell and his 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Eva Marie Williams, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lyle; an infant brother, Romaine and an infant granddaughter, Carley Corine Williams.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 1 p.m. in the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore, with the Rev. Grant Nichols, pastor, officiating.
Interment followed in the Bradford County Memorial Park, Luthers Mills.
Friends and family called on Tuesday evening, Feb. 4 at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. A military pass in review was held on Tuesday evening at the funeral home at 7 p.m.
Dave Fleming
Word has been received of the death of Dave Fleming, age 72. Dave lived in Fisher, Indiana
Dave was formerly of Wyalusing, graduating with the Class of 1948. In high school, he was a pitcher for the baseball team. Other extra-curricular activities included band and chorus.
Dave started college in Florida, but interrupted his schooling to serve a hitch with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. After his service time, he returned to earn a degree in Business Administration. Over the years, he managed several private clubs, the last being manager of food operations for the Scottish Rite, retiring from that position in 1995; previous to this he was a manager for 15 years for the prestigious Woodland Country Club.
Dave was the widower of Susan W. Atkins Fleming, who died as the result of a tragic one car accident. Surviving are: sons, Michael F. Fleming and Mark T. Fleming; brother, Michael F. Fleming of Middleburg, PA. In addition he is survived by three grandchildren, in whom he took great pride in sharing their school activities.
Services were held Jan. 2, 2003 at 10 a.m. in Second Presbyterian Church of which he was a member. No visitation hours were scheduled at Dave's request.

Rachel Johnson

Rachel J. Johnson, 81 of Friendsville, PA, passed away in Binghamton General Hospital on Thursday, March 27, 2003 after a brief illness. She was born in Plymouth, NY to the late John and Eda Ora (Roe) Benedict.
Mrs. Johnson was a member of the South Vestal Baptist Church. She enjoyed ceramics, needlepoint, traveling and her plants. She loved her great-grandchildren and her cats.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Albert Raymond and Donna Johnson, Birchardville, Frank J. and Tiny Johnson, Friendsville; two daughters, Dorothy L. Sperry, Vestal, NY, Linda J. Collins, Friendsville; a stepdaughter, Joanne Andrie, Bullhead City, AZ; a daughter-in-law, Betty Johnson, Sioux City, IA; a brother, Herman Benedict, Smyrna, NY; two sisters, Nancy Lawson, Phoenix, AZ, Eda Grant, Whitesboro, NY; 23 grandchildren; several great- and great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 1 at the Daniel K. Regan Funeral Home, Montrose, with Pastor Brian Hurley of the South Vestal Baptist Church officiating.

Hal Crisman

Halford Kelton Crisman, 81, of South Montrose, PA, died on Sunday, March 23, 2003 at his home. Born Nov. 9, 1921 in Fairdale, he was the son of the late Byron Earl and Louise (Risley) Crisman. His wife, Margaret J. (Dillon) Crisman predeceased him in 1994.
Halford became a familiar face of South Montrose, where he resided the rest of his life. He helped his father to continue the dairy farming business. His luck turned very good when he met and marriage Margaret Dillon on Nov. 30, 1950, his partner of 43 years.
In 1972, Halford pursued a new beginning away from farming and through his persistence and sticking to an idea, the Ridge Road Archery store was born and he became well-known in Susquehanna County as a supplier of sporting goods and clothing. Anyone from the dog owner to the foxhunter knew "Hal" as the man with the supplies.
Our father taught us the values that good fathers should. We not only learned how to milk a cow, but to appreciate the true value of the cow and its gift of milk . . . to enjoy life to the last drop and to respect all . . . respect is yours to give and to earn . . . simple and true.
We quote his friend, Bill Robinson, "He was a legend in and about this area." The legend is still here.
Survivors include his daughters and son-in-law, Debora Ann Crisman, South Montrose, Mary Louise and Charlie Ruiz, Tucson, AZ; his son, Hal (Rip) Crisman, South Montrose; grandchildren, Michele Crisman (Jay), Luke Crisman, Dillon Crisman, all of Meshoppen, Eric Crisman Ruiz, Sonia Maria Crisman Ruiz, both of Tucson, AZ. Truly missed by his son, daughters and friends. His reach went out to two people that were not his family, but were treated as his own, Linda Arnold, Dallas, TX and Neely Arnold, Austin, TX, daughters just the same. He was predeceased by his first grandson, Daniel Hal Crisman during the Sept. 11, disaster.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 29 at the Bartron Funeral Home, Inc., a Selected Independent Funeral Home, 74 Church St., Montrose. The family received friends on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Robert Stockbridge

Mr. Robert E. Stockbridge, Sr., age 72, of RR3, Box 198-C, Meshoppen, PA (Auburn Center), formerly of Newtown, CT, passed away at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre on Wednesday evening, March 19, 2003.
Born in Wellesley, Mass. on Sept. 13, 1930, he was the son of the late Wallace and Pearl Williams Stockbridge.
Mr. Stockbridge was a graduate of the Wellesley High School, Class of 1949. After high school, he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving his country during the Korean War.
For many years, he was employed as a Maintenance Supervisor for Union Camp Corporation in Newtown, retiring in 1988. After retiring, he became sexton of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Newtown, serving his church for three years.
After moving to the Meshoppen area, he became a member of the Retta United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, the former Barbara L. MacKinnon of Auburn Center; a son and his wife, Robert E., Jr. and Dianne Stockbridge of Southington, CT; three daughters and their husbands, Holly and Dana Healey of Middlebury, CT, Robin and Searl Johnson, Tunkhannock, Lynne and Rainer Ertl of Newtown, CT; two sisters, Jean Mathews of Cape Coral, FL and Ruth Tolar of Millis, MA; 10 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Wallace Stockbridge and a sister, Penny Haigh.
Funeral services were held on Monday, March 24 at 11 a.m. from the Retta United Methodist Church with Rev. Nancy Russell and Rev. Larry Russell of the church officiating. Interment was in the Retta Cemetery with graveside military services being conducted by members of the Rought-Hall Post #510 American Legion and the Endless Mountains Post #3583 VFW. Family and friends called at the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Meshoppen, on Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Daniel Reidy, Jr.

Daniel J. Reidy, Jr., age 85, of Horseheads, NY, passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2003 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center.
Mr. Reidy was born Sept. 27, 1917 in Elmira, NY, the son of the late Daniel James Reidy and Dora Louise Bauerlin Reidy. Dan was a communicant of St. Mary Our Mother Church in Horseheads and a retired conductor for the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad in Elmira.
Mr. Reidy was a lifetime member of the Horseheads Elks Lodge #2297 and a member of the Italian American Veterans Club of Elmira.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Blanche Wilcox Reidy in 1979; his son, Joseph A. Reidy in 2002; his brother, Lawrence Reidy in 2001 and his second wife, Vanona Woodruff Stanton Reidy on Sept. 13, 2002.
Mr. Reidy is survived by his children and their families: Sandy and John Balonis of Fort Myers, FL, Jack and Sundae Reidy of Mansfield, Don and Sharon Reidy of Horseheads, Marian Brown of Spring Hill, FL, Pat and Bob Grimes of Mercur, Nancy and Ted Hoffmann of Wyalusing, Henry and Beverly Stanton of Silvara; a daughter-in-law, Cathy Cimmeren of Elmira; a sister, Agnes Reidy of Beverly Hills, FL; “special sister,” Kay Bingaman of Beverly Hills, FL; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of caring friends.
Relatives and friends called at the Van Buskirk-Lynch Funeral Home, Mill St. and Grand Central Ave., Horseheads on Sunday, March 23 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Officers and members of the Horseheads Elks Lodge No. 2297 conducted a memorial service at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
A Prayer Service was held on Monday, March 24 at 9 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mary Our Mother Church in Horseheads. The Rev. Christopher E. Linsler was the celebrant. Interment was in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery in Elmira.
Keith Brown

Keith Lewis Brown, age 44, of New Albany, Wilmot Township, PA died Saturday, March 22, 2003.
Keith was born in Montrose on May 18, 1958, a son of Alice R. Lewis and the late John H. Brown Jr. He graduated from Wyalusing High School, a member of the Class of 1976. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1976 to 1980 and was formerly employed by Hoffman-New Yorker of Dushore. He marriage the former Hope Cobb of Wyalusing on Aug. 16, 1997.
Surviving are his spouse, Hope and a son, Keith Austin Brown at home; brothers and sister-in-law: John H. and Kathy Braun and James L. Brown, of Wyalusing: sisters and brother-in-law; Karen and Earl Steele of Wysox and Kathy Varnell of Pensacola, FL; his mother, Alice Brown of Holder, FL; sisters-in-law: Marguerite Whipple of Sayre and Holly Vanderpool of Towanda; nieces and nephews: Austin and Lena Varnell, Katie and Kelly Steele and Josh and Amanda Brown.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 27 at 11 a.m. at the South Auburn United Methodist Church with Mr. Calvin Cobb officiating. Interment will be in the Beaver Meadows Cemetery .
Arrangements are under the direction of the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore.
