Joseph A. Armstrong, Jr., age 75, of (Quicks Bend) Sugar Run, PA, passed away on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.
He was born on Dec. 3, 1927 in Pittston, a son of the late Joseph A. Armstrong, Sr. and Lenore Turner Armstrong.
Joseph has lived most of his life in Quicks Bend and is a graduate of Wyalusing High School.
On Feb. 5, 1988 he marriage the former Anita Remaykis in Towanda.
Prior to his retirement in 2002, he was a self-employed dairy farmer and logger.
He enjoyed his time spent farming, working and being with his family.
Besides his wife, Anita, he is survived by four children, Donna and Lloyd Kasson of Forkston, Betty Jo and Greg Fitzgerald of Quicks Bend, John and Jennifer Armstrong of Jenningsville and Amy Armstrong, at home; a sister and brother-in-law, Lenore and Earl Copp of Whitney Point, NY; a sister, Blanche Hansen, Des Moines, IA; his grandchildren, Scott and Stacy Smales, Kristen and Jennifer Kasson, Jeffrey, Corey and Alexandra Armstrong and great-grandchildren, Kennedy and Christian Smales and several nieces and nephews.
As per Joseph’s request, there will be no calling hours, and private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements were entrusted to the McHenry Funeral Home, 106 Church St., Wyalusing.
Margaret Sprague

Margaret E. (Maggie) Sprague, age 73, of PO Box 54, Laceyville, PA (Rock Hill), passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 25, 2003 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.
Born in Springville on Jan. 9, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Theodore and Emma Sutton Smith.
Maggie was employed as a dietary technician at the Tyler Memorial Hospital in Tunkhannock for over 20 years.
In her spare time, Maggie enjoyed playing bingo at the American Legion in Black Walnut. She also enjoyed crocheting in her early life.
She is survived by her longtime companion, Elmer Boyd, whom she has been with for 31 years; two sons, Theodore Sprague of Nicholson and James Sprague of Laceyville; three daughters, Judith Potts of Nicholson, Barbara Bendock and Patricia Fazekas, both of Laceyville; three sisters, Elmeta Walker of King George, VA, Carrie Walrath of Port Crane, NY and Emma Smith of Afton Lake, NY; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Arvin Smith, Daniel Smith, George Smith and Pete Smith and sisters, Freda Hanyon and Elizabeth Sherwood.
Abiding with Maggie’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral services. A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date at the Sunnyside Cemetery in Tunkhannock.
Arrangements were made through the Sheldon Funeral Home, Inc., Main St., Laceyville.
Anne Scott

Anne Snyder Walker Scott of Springville, PA, died on Thursday, April 24, 2003 at the Barnes-Kasson Skilled Nursing Facility in Susquehanna, PA. She was born in Dimock on March 8, 1916, a daughter of the late Claude Snyder and Lucy Drake Snyder Button.
Prior to her retirement she worked as a cook.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Wallace.
Surviving are a brother, Darwin Button of Harpursville, NY; a sister, Cynthia White, Springville; nieces and nephews.
At the request of Mrs. Scott, there will be no funeral services. Private interment services will be held at the convenience of the family in Strickland Hill Cemetery, Springville. Arrangements are by the Sheldon-Kukuchka Funeral Home, Inc., 73 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock.
Kenneth Mapes

Kenneth H. Mapes, 52, of Towanda RR3, Towanda Township, PA, passed away Monday, April 28, 2003 at his home, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born April 22, 1951 in Meshoppen, he was the son of the late Kenneth W. and Ruth L. Gowin Mapes. Kenneth was a graduate of Wyalusing Valley High School, Class of 1969.
Up until his death, Kenny was a highly-respected employee of CraftMaster Manufacturing (formerly Masonite) for 33 years.
He was a member of the Independent Baptist Church in Towanda and the Towanda Country Club. Kenneth enjoyed the outdoors, especially playing golf, hunting and fishing.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara Sims Mapes; his children, Linda Whinnery and husband, Matthew, of Sutton, WV, Diane Mapes of Towanda, Kenneth H. Mapes and his fiancee, Lisa Fenton of Lock Haven; his stepson, Andrew J. Hill of Towanda; two granddaughters, Jacie and Jordan Whinnery; his sister and brother-in-law, Fern and David Davis of Baltimore, MD; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Edward and Darlene Mapes of Ellisville, MS, Charles and Pamela Mapes of Sugar Run and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 1 from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 2 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Donn Hauser of the Independent Baptist Church, Towanda, officiating.
Interment will be in the Camptown Cemetery .
The family suggests that memorial contributions be directed to The Wyalusing Valley High School Football Extra Point Club, RR2, Box 7, Wyalusing, PA 18853, to the Towanda Area School District Golf and Tennis Program, North Fourth St., Towanda, PA 18848 or the Independent Baptist Church, Cherry St., Towanda, PA 18848 in Kenneth H. Cheryl Crayton

Cheryl Ann Crayton, age 50, of RR3, Box 3374B, Nicholson, PA, passed away at the Hospice Preferred Choice of the Mid-Valley Hospital in Peckville on Thursday evening, April 24, 2003.
Born in Newton, NJ, on Nov. 25, 1952, she was the daughter of Glenn and Betty Carter Squier of Retta.
Cheryl was a graduate of Elk Lake High School, Class of 1970. After high school, she served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict in the early 1970’s, serving stateside.
For many years she was employed by Penske Truck Rentals in Scranton as a service, sales and rental representative.
In her spare time, Cheryl enjoyed reading and gardening.
Besides her parents, she is survived by three sons, Matthew Timm and Daniel Timm, both of Tunkhannock, and Jason Crayton of Lancaster; a brother and his wife, Robin and Lisa Smith of Factoryville; two sisters, Mrs. Norm (Chris) Salsman and Ms. Susan Sane, both of Laceyville; three granddaughters, two nephews and one niece.
Funeral and committal services were held on Tuesday, April 29 at 2 p.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville, with Rev. Charles Bishop of the Transue Community Church officiating. Interment was in the Jersey Hill Cemetery. Friends and family called at the funeral home on Monday evening from 6 to 9 p.m.

Paul Zielinski

Paul J. Zielinski, Jr., age 77, of Dushore, PA, died on Wednesday, April 16, 2003 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre. He was a retired steel worker from the Philadelphia area.
He was born in Philadelphia on April 25, 1925, one of nine children of Paul Zielinski, Sr. and Adelaide Armstrong Zielinski.
He was a United States Marine Corps veteran of World War II and saw action in the Pacific Theatre and Guam.
Mr. Zielinski worked for Nice Ball Bearing Company in Philadelphia for over 35 years, before retiring to his mountain home in Dushore, with his wife, Veronica, who preceded him in death in 1995.
He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Mildred. His other memberships included the Mildred American Legion Post #452; 40/8 Voiture #549; VFW Post #3428, Muncy and he was a charter member and former director of the White Ash Land Association.
He is survived by his son, Paul, III and daughter-in-law, Carol and two grandchildren, Scott and Robin; sisters and brothers, Betty Toomes of Warminster, Constance Burns of Turnersville, NJ, Charles Zielinski of Bristol, Joan Lynch of Philadelphia, Joseph Zielinski of Pine Grove and George Zielinski of Quakertown.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Zielinski and a sister, Adelaide Soder.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, April 22 at 11 a.m. in St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Mildred, with the Rev. Michael Harris, his pastor, as celebrant.
Interment followed in the adjoining parish Cemetery, with graveside military honors accorded by the members of Mildred American Legion Post #452.
Friends and family called on Tuesday morning at the McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Robert Saxe

Robert Walter Saxe, age 78, 240 Leisure Lane, Horseheads, NY, formerly of Wilmot Township, Bradford County, PA and Bath, NY passed away on Monday, April 21, 2003 at the Arnot Ogden Hospital, Elmira, NY.
Bob was born on the family farm in Wilmot Township on Aug. 23, 1924, a son of the late Thaddeus D. and Agnes McGuire Saxe. He graduated from Wyalusing Valley High School, a member of the Class of 1943. Bob worked for the Corning Glass Manufacturing Company of Corning as a Lathe Operator at the Big Flats Plant, retiring in 1984 after 35 years of service. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He marriage the former Mary Sutryk of Savona, NY on Jan. 17, 1953. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in January. Bob lived in Bath, NY for 40 years.
During their retirement years, he and Mary completely restored the family farmhouse in Wilmot Township. He was also an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener.
He was a member of St. Basil’s Church, Dushore and was also a life member of the B.P.O.E. Elks in Bath, NY and a member of the Bath American Legion Post.
Surviving are his spouse: Mary; sons and daughters-in-law, James T. and Sharon Saxe, Horseheads, NY Peter M. and Adele Saxe, Deltona, FL; a daughter, Barbara A. Waskuvich, Horseheads, NY; five grandchildren, Robert Wassel, Michael Saxe, Amber Saxe, Jamie Saxe and Teresa Waskuvich; six great-grandchildren, Robby Wassel, Connor Wassel, Alexandra Saxe, Kristofer Saxe, Michael Saxe and Benjamin Saxe.
Bob was predeceased by sisters, Helen Saxe on Aug. 1, 1929; Charlotte M. Saxe on June 17, 1976; Florence M. Saxe on Nov. 30, 1980; brothers, Leonard Saxe on April 24, 1958; Paul E. Saxe on Feb. 14, 1970 and Lewis B. Saxe on April 4, 1987.
Funeral services will be held from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, on Friday, April 25, at 10 a.m. and will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Basil’s Catholic Church, Dushore, with the Rev. Michael B. Harris, his pastor, presiding. Interment will be in St. Basil’s Cemetery .
Friends may call on Thursday, April 24 at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m.
The family will provide the flowers. Memorials may be directed to Memorial Hospice, One Hospital Drive, Towanda, PA 18848, Southern Tier Hospice, 185 E. Corning Road, Corning, NY 14830 or St. Basil’s Restoration Fund, PO Box 307, Dushore, PA 18614.

Barbara Moore

Barbara K. Moore, age 88, of RR2, Terry Township, Wyalusing, PA, passed away at the home of her daughter and son-in-law on Tuesday morning, April 22, 2003.
She was born on April 27, 1914 in Philadelphia, a daughter of the late Joseph and Eva Mosier Holtz.
Prior to her retirement in 1977, she was employed by Sears in the accounting department, giving 30 years of service.
She had been a resident of the Wyalusing area for 12 years, moving from Montgomery County.
She was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ardsley.
Survivors include her daughters, Barbara Joule of Lancaster, Catherine and Robert Gramlich of Wyalusing; a sister, Catherine Wicen of Furlong; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; three nephews and a niece.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Kessler and a nephew.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 25 at 2 p.m. in the McHenry Funeral Home, 106 Church St., Wyalusing.
Friends and family are invited to call on Friday afternoon, from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.

Virginia Claire McLaughlin, 83, of Hazleton, PA, died on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2003 in her home.
Born in Milnesville on Nov. 13, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Ida Sherman McNertney and resided in Hazleton most of her life.
She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who valued family life and her Catholic faith.
In addition, the following brothers and sisters have preceded her in death: Eugene McNertney, Mrs. James (Mary) O’Donnell, Mrs. Stephen (Elizabeth) Curry, Mrs. John B. (Ruth) Smith, William McNertney, Mrs. John (Doris) Boronski and Thomas McNertney.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Frank Gennaro, Hazleton; her sons, John E. McLaughlin, Oklahoma City, OK, Very Reverend Patrick J. McLaughlin, V.F., Pastor of Holy Trinity German and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Churches, Hazleton; Mark P. McLaughlin, Albuquerque, NM and Timothy S. McLaughlin, Allentown; 10 grandchildren, Joseph P. Bissol, Patrick J. Gennaro, Alison Gennaro, Megan Brissol Howey, Courtney Gennaro, Phillip J. Bissol and Annie Bissol of Hazleon, John, Scott and Elizabeth McLaughlin of Oklahoma; four great-grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Howard (Gertrude) Buff of Weatherly.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday (today), April 24 at 11 a.m. in Holy Trinity German Church, North Laurael and Oak St., Hazleton. Her son, Very Reverend Patrick J. McLaughlin, V.F., will be the presider. Burial will be in St. Gabriel Cemetery .
Friends called on Wednesday, April 23 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Thursday from 9 to 10:30 a.m.

Richard Hayes, Jr., of Dotham, AL, passed away suddenly on Thursday, April 17, 2003 at his home.
He was born on Oct. 23, 1978 to Richard Hayes and Cherie Hall.
Survivors include a brother, David, at home; an aunt, Nikki and Thomas Richards of Port Crane, NY; uncle, Shawn and Stacey Owen of Monroeton; several great aunts, uncles and cousins from this area.
He was predeceased by his grandmother, Shirley Owen and great-grandmother, Nellie Owen of Spring Hill.
Funeral services were held in Dotham, AL on Monday, April 21.
