Friday for Howard Sherwood, Sr.
Howard H. Sherwood, Sr., age 83, of Dushore RR1, PA, passed away on Monday, November 27, 2000 at his home.
He was born on December 23, 1916 in Unityville, a son of the late John Arthur and Florence May Heller Sherwood.
Howard was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army.
He had been a resident of Sullivan County since 1946 and enjoyed his time spent fishing, hunting and being in the out of doors.
His wife of 56 years, the former Anna M. (Smith) Sherwood, preceded him in death on May 1, 1998.
He was a member of American Legion McDermott Post No. 452 of Dushore; VFW Post No. 384 of New Albany; he was a lifetime veteran of the Battle of the Bulge with the 8th Field Artillery as a forward observer and was a lifetime member of the Disabled Veterans.
Surviving are his five children, Dot Hockberg of Annville, Marge Bednar of Dallas, Don Sherwood and Jim Sherwood, both of Dushore and Sam Sherwood of Sweet Valley; a sister, Martha; twelve grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sons, Howard, Jr. and Daniel and eight brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Dec. 1 at 10:30 a.m. in the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore, with the Rev. James Donahoo, pastor of the Sayre Christian Church, officiating.
Friends and family are invited to call on Thursday evening at McHenry Funeral Home in Dushore from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be a military pass and review on Thursday evening at 7:15 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Guthrie Hospice Unit, Towanda, PA 18848 in Mr. Sherwood's memory.

For Orlando 'Buck' Brown
Orlando "Buck" Frederick Brown, 66, of RR2, Rome (Windham Township), PA, died suddenly Monday morning, April 2, 2001 at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre.
Born May 27, 1934 in Sayre, he was a son of Margaret E. (Frederick) Nimmo and the late Wurt S. Brown.
He was affectionately known as "Buck" to his family and friends.
He attended Rome High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
For many years, he sold hay to many area farmers throughout the Bradford County. He owned and operated Brown's Custodial Services and was a truck driver from 1975-91. He currently was driving a school bus for the Northeast Bradford School District.
Mr. Brown enjoyed traveling, was an avid reader and making screen printings on clothing and novelty items, although his greatest enjoyment was being surrounded by his loving family.
He was a devoted member of the Windham Center Community Church.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Sharon (Harding) Brown of Windham; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard A. and Wanda Brown of Mountain Home, AR, Orlando E. and Tanya Brown of Rome and Shawn F. and Angela Brown of Rome; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra H. Strickland and Bob Borick and Rebecca A. and Daniel Saylor, all of Wysox, Lawana E. and Mark Morse of Pine Valley, NY and Susan J. and Chad Rogers of Nichols; brother and sister-in-law, Silas and Merilee Brown of Hornbrook; brothers, Anselmo "Andy" Brown and Wurt E. Brown, both of Rome; special grandchildren, Christy (Brian) McLinko, Mary Philippi, Renae Strickland, Sara Strickland, Gary Moore, Zachary Brown, James Brown, Justin Brown, Nicole Saylor, Sebrina Saylor, Hillary Rogers, Troy Rogers and Evan Brown; three great-grandchildren, Brandon McLinko, Cearra McLinko and Garrett Saylor; father-in-law, Theodore C. Harding of Rome; brother-in-law and his wife, Duane and Ethel Harding; sister-in-law and her husband, Peggy and Raymond Decker; his former wife, Helen M. Brown of Rome; several nieces, nephews and cousins and his faithful canine companion, Nugget.
Funeral services and a celebration of Mr. Brown's life will be held on Thursday, April 5 at 11 a.m. at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols, with Pastor William Kohler, officiating.
Interment will follow in Rome Cemetery .

Mary L. LaPonte, age 80, of Sullivan Terrace, Dushore, PA, passed away on Tuesday, March 27, 2001 at The Highlands in Laporte.
Mary was born in Brooklyn, NY on March 9, 1921, a daughter of the late Francis and Susannah McEntee Hughes.
Mary resided in New Jersey until moving to Sullivan Terrace in 1992.
Surviving are two daughters, Jane Stueck and Jeanne Godshall, both of Dushore; three grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 29 at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., with the Rev. Michael B. Harris, pastor of St. Basil's Catholic Church, presiding.
Interment was in Old Zion Cemetery , Dushore.

Ruby M. Marbaker, 96, formerly of Johnson City, NY, died on Wednesday, March 28, 2001 at the Willow Point Nursing Home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond in 1944; three sons, Clifton Marbaker, Howard Marbaker and Lee Marbaker; two sons-in-law, Donald Swindler and Joseph Bonczek and a grandson, William Emmenger.
She worked at the Garden House for Adults for 25 years and was the administrator for the last 10 years. She was a graduate of Ridley Lowell Business School.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 31 at 12 noon at the Barber Memorial Home, Inc., 428 Main St., Johnson City with Dr. Dariel Ling, pastor of the Sarah Jane United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial was in Beaver Meadows Cemetery , Clapper Hill.
The family received friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service.

Marian Sharpe
Marian Dunning Sharpe, 93, of Somers Point, NJ and Casco, ME, died on Thursday, March 29, 2001 at the Harrisburg Hospital in Harrisburg, PA. She was a graduate of Pennsylvania State University in 1932.
She was the widow of Lewis E. Sharpe. They lived in West Caldwell for many years, where Lewis taught mathematics at both the Grover Cleveland and James Caldwell High Schools. Marian was a member of the St. Peter's United Methodist Church in Ocean City, NJ, the Alpha Chi Omega Society, the South Jersey Retired Teachers Association and the Penn State Alumni Association.
Survivors include her son, Walter L. Sharpe of Stockton, NJ; one daughter, Joyce A. Rankin of Seaville, NJ; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the St. Peter's United Methodist Church, on the corner of 8th St. and Central Avenue in Ocean City, NJ.
Burial will be in the Vaughn Cemetery in Mehoopany.

Passes Away
Edith M. Wilmarth, age 91, of RR1, Box 1548, Laceyville, PA, passed away at the Meadowview Senior Living Center in Montrose early Saturday morning, March 31, 2001.
Born on Russell Hill, Tunkhannock Township, Wyoming County, on Nov. 21, 1909, she was the daughter of the late James Monroe and Minnie Welteroth Johnson.
Mrs. Wilmarth was a dietary technician at the Methodist Manor and also the Tyler Memorial Hospital in Tunkhannock for many years. She was employed as a clerk at Charles Brothers, also in Tunkhannock.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, with whom she lived for many years, George F., Sr. and Hazel Wilmarth of Laceyville; her grandchildren, Donna Gleason, George Wilmarth, Jr., Susan Hoeffner, Dale Wilmarth, Karen Herron and Duane Wilmarth; 14 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Gertrude Mowery and Ada Berry and two brothers, Frank Johnson and William Johnson.
Abiding by the wishes of Mrs. Wilmarth, there will be no calling hours or funeral services.

Passes Away
Mr. Cyrus T. Baker, age 80, of RR2, Box 2053, Laceyville, PA, (Indian Hill), passed away at his home on Sunday morning, May 20, 2001.
Born in Meshoppen on Oct. 26, 1920, he was the son of the late Francis and Eliza Brotzman Baker. Mr. Baker was employed as a manager at Cornell Manufacturing in Laceyville for 36 years, retiring in 1983.
He was a member of the Skinners Eddy United Methodist Church in Laceyville. He was also a member of the Meshoppen Grange, the Oriental Grange and the Pomona Grange and was Master of the Wyoming County Chapter for many years. A past member of the Good Will Fire Company of Laceyville, he was a past member of the Overfield Cemetery Association of Meshoppen.
Cy is survived by his wife of 55 years, the former Shirley White; a son and his wife, Arden and Diane Baker of Meshoppen; four daughters and their husbands, Miss Sharon Baker of Laceyville, Janet and Malcolm Wech of Wyalusing, Dolores and Gilbert Sands of Tunkhannock and Kimberly and Anthony Johnson of Laceyville; a brother, Walter Baker of West Melbourne, FL; two sisters, Mrs. Hilda Bennett of Stevensville and Mrs. Leland (Mable) Wood of Vestal, NY; 11 grandchildren, Jesse Baker of Johnson City, NY, Luke Baker and Angie Baker, both of Meshoppen, Asa Stevens, Seth Stevens and Jay Stevens, all of Springville, Edna Sands of Punxsutawney, Roy Sands and Bobbi Jo Sands, both of Tunkhannock and Branden and Autumn Johnson, both of Laceyville; two step-grandchildren, Scott Wech of Las Vegas, NV and Dennis Wech of Kileen, TX; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Frances Baker and Jenny Baker and three brothers, George, John and Joseph Baker.
Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, May 24 at 11 a.m. at the Skinners Eddy United Methodist Church with Rev. Ann Blair, his pastor, officiating. Interment
will be in Overfield Cemetery in Meshoppen. Family and friends called at the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Mr. Gordon Marlyn Baker, age 68, of Church St., Meshoppen, PA, passed away at the Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton on Monday, May 14, 2001.
Born in Binghamton, NY on March 20, 1933, he was the son of the late Arthur Joseph and Euphrasia Stevens Baker.
Mr. Baker was a graduate of the Meshoppen High School, Class of 1952. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served with the U.S. Occupational Forces in Germany. He was employed for many years by J.J. Bunnell of Meshoppen and also the Bendix Corporation of South Montrose, from where he retired.
He attended the Skinners Eddy United Methodist Church and was a member of the Meshoppen Fire Company.
Surviving are a brother and sister-in-law, Rodney and Dolores Baker of Dimock; a sister and brother-in-law, Virgie and Richard Learn of Laceyville; two nephews, Gregory Learn of St. Petersburg, FL and Jeffrey Learn of Port Orange, FL and a niece, Larice McCann of New Castle, DE.
Memorial services will be held at the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Meshoppen, on Friday, May 25 at 2 p.m. Interment
will be at the Jersey Hill Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.

Carol E. Grabowski, age 83, of 123 East Main St., Dushore, PA, died on Friday morning, May 18, 2001 at The Highlands Nursing Home in Laporte, following a lingering illness.
She was born on November 14, 1917 in Rush, a daughter of Walter and Lea Shaner Jagger.
Until her retirement in 1983, she had been a nurse at Carpenter Care Center in Tunkhannock.
Her husband, the late Stanley Grabowski, preceded her in death by many years.
For the last three years, she had been a resident of Dushore with her daughter and husband, Carol and Robert Ackley.
Surviving, in addition to her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Robert Ackley, Dushore, are a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Kathleen Thomas of Midland Park, NJ; a sister, Louise McGavin of Lakeland, FL; five grandchildren, Diane Millspaugh, Dennis F. Decker, Allen Thomas, Wiley Thomas and Gustav F. Hiller, Jr.
Funeral services were held on Monday evening, May 21 at 8 p.m. in the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore, with the Rev. Robert W. Brown, pastor of St. Paul's United Methodist Church of Dushore, officiating.
Friends and family called on Monday at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and from 7 p.m. until the time of the service.
Interment will be at the convenience of the family.
