Peggy Valjean Deal Reed, age 81 of Evergreen Nursing Home, Harmony, Pennsylvania, formerly of England Street, Meridian, died Monday, November 24, 2008 at 3:05 p.m. in the Evergreen Nursing Center.
Born November 8, 1927 in Butler, Pennsylvania she was the daughter of the late George Shanor Deal and the late Violet Mae Thompson Deal.
Mrs. Reed was a Homemaker, but had also worked for the Armstrong MasterTech and Alarm and the Area Agency on Aging as a receptionist. Mrs. Reed attended the First Baptist Church of Butler.
Mrs. Reed is survived by her two sons, Richard Calvin Reed and his wife Sharon of Mount Chestnut, Pennsylvania, Larry Eugene Reed and his wife Sherrie of Butler, by two daughters, Mrs. Timothy (Tammy) Worley of Meridian, Pennsylvania, with whom she made her home, Mrs. Robert E. (Judy) Parks of Butler, nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, George Deal of Butler, Vernon Deal of Butler, two sisters, Mrs. Albert (Shirley) Shook of Butler, and Mrs. John (Patty) Hoover of Chicora, Pennsylvania.
Mrs. Reed was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Eugene Reed who passed away on June 19, 1974, and also by four brothers and one sister.
Friends will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania on Wednesday, November 26, 2008 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc. on Thursday, November 27, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend David Maitland of First Baptist Church officiating. Private Interment will be in Greenlawn Burial Estates.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church School, 221 West New Castle Street, Butler, Pennsylvania 16001.
Manuel Irwin "Irv" Kuhr
July 25, 1928 - November 21, 2008
Manuel Irwin "Irv" Kuhr, age 80, of North Main Street, Butler, Pennsylvania, died Friday, November 21, 2008 at Forbes Regional Hospital in Monroeville, Pennsylvania.
He was a Community Activist, Dedicated Teacher, Eternal Optimist and Friend to All.
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late David I. Kuhr and Lena Kurtz Kuhr.
Mr. Kuhr was a member of Congregation B'Nai Abraham. He obtained his B.A. and M.A. from Temple University and his Ph.D in 1963 from the University of Missouri. His career included Post Doctoral Study at Pennsylvania State University and Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
He was an instructor at the University of Missouri, an assistant professor and assistant debate coach at Bradley University, and an instructor and director of Forensics at Temple University. He was a professor at Slippery Rock University from 1961 to 1991. During that time, he chaired the Speech Department for ten years and Department of Communications in the fall of 1990. He was Professor Emeritus at Slippery Rock University from 1991 to present.
He was a member of The National Communication Association, Pennsylvania Communication Association, past President of the Slippery Rock University Chapter of American Association of University Professors, past president of the Slippery Rock Chapter of the Association of State College and University Faculties. He served on the boards of Keystone Tall Tree Girl Scout Council, Irene Stacy Mental Health Center, Butler County Mental Health/Mental Retardation Advisory Board, United Way, and Temple Hadar Israel. He most recently served on the board of the Institute for Learning in Retirement, as past president of the board of the Mental Health Association of Butler County, and on the board of the Butler Jewish Welfare Fund.
Mr. Kuhr marriage Lois Grass on August 15, 1954, she preceded him in death on October 5, 1995.
Mr. Kuhr is survived by three daughters, Harriet Kuhr of Atlanta, Georgia; Tina Kuhr of Charlotte, North Carolina; Rachel Kuhr of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and two grandsons, David and Ben Anthony and by one sister, Ada Golden of Houston, Texas and five nieces and nephews.
He is also survived by his significant other, Nancy Thomas Mickle, and her children, John and Laura, Tom and Joanne, Bill, and Katherine.
He was preceded in death by one brother Mort Kuhr.

Services will be held at the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc. on Sunday, November 23, 2008 at 12:30 p.m. with Hazzan Adrienne Caplowe of Congregation B'Nai Abraham officiating. Interment will follow in Congregation B'Nai Abraham Cemetery.

Shirley (Walker) Long
November 15, 1930 - November 20, 2008
Shirley (Walker) Long passed away peacefully at home, November 20, 2008. A long time resident of Butler County, she moved to Greensburg seven years ago to be closer to family. She was born November 15, 1930 in Tarentum to the late Esther and Dale Walker. Following her graduation from Tarentum H.S., Shirley attended Westminster College where she earned her Business/ Teaching degree. This was followed by several years of teaching at Mars and Slippery Rock School Districts. Later, she received her Master's Degree from Indiana University of PA and was hired to teach at Butler County Community College. She taught nineteen years at the college.
Shirley loved being with her family and friends. She enjoyed cooking, needlepoint, traveling, and dancing. Tap dancing as a child led to an interest in learning clogging after retirement. She could really dance! Another of her passions was her love of animals. Her "furry grandchildren", Buddy, Mr. Sniffy, Kitty, and Cybil, looked forward to her visiting and the special treats that came along with the hugs.
In Butler, Mrs. Long was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. After moving to Greensburg, she was an active member of Charter Oak United Methodist Church. She and her husband volunteered for the church and were a part of the retiree's social group.
Even with her health failing, Shirley stayed active and was like a light in the room. She never complained because she didn't want her troubles to be anyone elses. Everyone who knew her, loved her.
She is survived by her loving husband, Edward Long; a daughter, Terry Zorch of Greensburg; a son, John D. Leslie of Pittsburgh; two brothers, Robert Walker of Findlay, Ohio and James Walker of Las Vegas, Nevada ; four grandchildren, Kari Iacona, Rebecca Zorch, Laura Zorch, and Michael Zorch; one great-grandchild, Jordan Iacona.
Shirley's family will welcome friends on Sunday, November 23, from 1 to 4 p.m.and on Monday 11:30 to 12:30p.m. at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home in Butler, Pennsylvania 724-287-3706. Services will be held in Thompson-Miller Funeral Home at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, following visitation. The Reverend Paul Inks will be officiating. Interment will follow in Butler County Memorial Park. David W. George
March 3, 1933 - November 20, 2008
David W. George, age 75 of Mercer Road, Butler, Pennsylvania, died Thursday, November 20, 2008 at 3:30 a.m. in the Butler Memorial Hospital.
Born March 3, 1933 in Worthington, Pennsylvania he was the son of the late Waid M. George and the late Phyllis C. Hepler George.
Mr. George was a crane operator for Marmon Keystone Corp. retiring in 1998. He was Lutheran by faith. Mr. George enjoyed playing golf and watching sports.
Mr. George is survived by his son, Timothy and his wife Terri George of Evans City, Pennsylvania; by two brothers and their wives, Paul and Connie George of Bend, Oregon, Waid and Leslie George of Butler, Pennsylvania; his sister, Kathy George of Cincinnati, Ohio; three granddaughters, three great-grandchildren, and by a number of nieces and nephews.
Mr. George was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara A. George who passed away on February 15, 1988 and also by one brother, Larry D. George.
Friends will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday, November 22, 2008 from 5 to 8 p.m.
Services will be held at the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc. on Saturday at 8 p.m. with Reverend James W. Dollhopf of First English Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will follow in Lawn Haven Memorial Park.

Thomas W. Fair, age 69 of West Brady Street, Butler, Pennsylvania, died Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at 11:40 p.m. in the Concordia Lutheran Care, Cabot, Pennsylvania.
Born June 19, 1939 in Butler, Pennsylvania he was the son of the late Edgar Fair and the late Nellie Brewster Fair.
Mr. Fair worked at Armco until his retirement in February of 1998. He was baptized Lutheran. Mr. Fair belonged to the French and Belgium Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, sports, playing cards and spending time with his family and friends at his camp in Tionesta.
Mr. Fair is survived by his two sons, Thomas and his wife Maria Fair, of Butler, Terry Fair of Butler; three daughters, Donna and her husband Bruce Edmiston, of Butler, Diana and her husband David Smith of Cranberry Township, and Deana Fair of Butler, by eight grandchildren: Kristina, Ryan, Nicole, Megan, Andrew, Jacob, Jonathan, and Mackenzie, one brother, Benjamin Fair of Butler, Pennsylvania, and by numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Fair was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Anne Novosat Fair whom he marriage on June 25, 1960 and who passed away on September 10, 1996. He was also preceded in death by six brothers and three sisters.

Tracey J. Carl, age 42, of Butler, Pennsylvania, died Sunday, November 16, 2008 at 1:40 p.m. at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Born June 15, 1966 in Butler, Pennsylvania she was the daughter of James P. Lawson and Jo Ann (Brandt) Lawson.
Mrs. Carl worked in marketing for a chemical company. She was protestant by faith. Tracey was very active in her children's sports and with their school activities.
Tracey is survived by her husband, Gregory C. Carl whom she marriage on November 24, 1990, by one daughter, Emily L. Carl and one son, Logan C. Carl both at home, by her parents, James P. and Jo Ann Lawson, by two brothers David and his wife Dana Lawson, Douglas and his wife Lori Lawson all of Butler, Pennsylvania. She is also survived by her mother and father-in-law, Steven and Jacqueline Carl of Cowansville, Pennsylvania, her sister-in-law Gretchen and her husband Ralph Orsini of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania and by a number of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Lynford Wayne (Lyn) Gilbert
September 11, 1918 - November 16, 2008
Lynford Wayne (Lyn) Gilbert, age 90 of Winchester Court, Renfrew, Pennsylvania, died Sunday, November 16, 2008 at 2:43 a.m. in the Butler V A Medical Center.
Born September 11, 1918 in Blairs Corners, Pennsylvania he was the son of the late Ralph C. Gilbert and the late Hattie Mae Best.
Mr. Gilbert was a retired mechanical engineer for Hughes Aircraft in Los Angeles, California. He retired at the age of 80 in 1993 and came home to Pennsylvania in 1999. He was a member of First English Lutheran Church. Mr. Gilbert was an alumni of the Carnegie Mellon University. He was Chief Ammunition Supply Officer of the 13th Air Force in the South Pacific during WW II. While at Hughes Aircraft he designed the Gimballing System on the F14 and F18 airplanes and the missile launcher on the Bradley Tank among other things. He enjoyed nature where he hiked Mount Whitney in California. He also enjoyed music, literature, and language study.
Mr. Gilbert is survived by his wife, Eleanor Jones Gilbert whom he marriage on November 26, 1947, by son, David Lyn Gilbert of Bedford, New Hampshire; daughter, Diane Louise Gilbert of Redondo Beach, California; by three grandchildren, Stephanie Gilbert, Patrick Gilbert, Allison Gilbert; two brothers, Chester Gilbert of Saxonburg, Pennsylvania, Clyde Gilbert of Natrona Heights, Pennsylvania.
Mr. Gilbert was preceded in death by one sister Sara and one brother Walter.
Friends will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania on Friday, November 21, 2008 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at the First English Lutheran Church on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend James W. Dollhopf of First English Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will follow in St. Paul's Union Cemetery, Knox, Pennsylvania.
