Beloved Father, Grandfather, Great-grandfather and friend; John Jay Berdy, age 96 of 151 Autumn Drive, Butler, Pennsylvania, died Tuesday, November 16, 2004 at 8:00 p.m. in U.P.M.C. Passavant.
Born Saturday, April 18, 1908 in Lyndora, Pennsylvania he was the son of Austrian immigrants who resided in historical Red Row in Lyndora the late Stephen Berdy and the late Sophia Hoblak.
Mr. Berdy started with the Butler Armco in the labor department and worked his way up to the responsible job of being a heater in the wheel works department. Mr. Berdy had 37 years of service at Butler Armco, retiring on February 28, 1970. Mr. Berdy has been retired for 34 years. He was a member of Calvary Evangelical Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of the Army National Guard.
Mr. Berdy is survived by three sons, J. Stephen and his wife Lilene E. Berdy of Newark, New York, James Earl and his wife Deidre Berdy of Tampa, Florida, Bruce A. B. Berdy of Butler, Pennsylvania; two Grandchildren; Lewis Stephen and his wife Candie L. Berdy of Victor, New York, Lanalee Z. and her husband Jeff Anthony Buziak of Fredericksburg, Virginia, two great-grandchildren; Miranda L. and Aidan L. Berdy; two sisters, Mrs. Julia Palace, Miss Mary Berdy both of Butler, Pennsylvania; two half-brothers, Steve Novak, of Maryland, Pete Novak of Butler, Pennsylvania, and by a number of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Berdy was preceded in death by he his wife, Grace E. Burkholder Berdy who passed away on June 19, 2000, and by one brother, Michael Berdy, one half brother William Novak and a half sister Catherine Novak.
Friends will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania on Friday, November 19, 2004 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.
Services will be held at the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc. Saturday, November 20, 2004 11:00 a.m. with Larry Burkholder officiating. Interment will follow in North Side Cemetery.
Lois J. Patton
October 14, 1922 - November 16, 2004
Lois J. Patton, age 82 of 191 Venango Trail, Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, died Tuesday, November 16, 2004 at 5:45 a.m. in Butler Memorial Hospital.
Born October 14, 1922 in Adams Township, Butler County she was the daughter of the late Frank Allison and the late Eva Burr.
Mrs. Patton was a homemaker. She attended New Testament Baptist Church.
Mrs. Patton is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Catherine Waldron, Ms. Ruth M. Patton, Ms. Phyllis Edgar all of Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania; two sons, Arthur R. Patton of Atlanta, Georgia, Douglas C. Patton of Greenville, South Carolina; six grandchildren, two grandsons, two brothers, Clyde E. Allison of Prospect, Pennsylvania, Dean E. Allison of Butler, Pennsylvania and by a number of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Patton was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Ray Patton, Sr. who passed away on July 10, 1966.
Friends will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania on Wednesday, November 17, 2004 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc. on Thursday, November 18, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Dr. Steve Fisher officiating. Interment will follow in Butler County Memorial Park.
Marie Barlow McCandless
March 25, 1908 - November 14, 2004
Marie Barlow McCandless, age 96 of Outlook Pointe, Saxonburg, Pennsylvania, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 14, 2004 at Outlook Pointe At Saxonburg.
Born in Murphysboro, Illinois on March 25, 1908 she was the daughter of the late Herman and Lula Imhoff.
Marie spent most of her life in Butler as the owner and operator of the Nixon Beauty shop, retiring at the age of 75. Mrs. McCandless was a member of First English Lutheran Church, Maqueda Chapter #421 Order of Eastern Star and the White Shrine Good Samaritan #32. She was a self taught Silver Life Master in bridge, teaching and winning many tournaments in her lifetime.
Mrs. McCandless was preceded in death by her first husband Edwin Barlow who passed away on April 15, 1970, a sister, two brothers, grand-daughter, Dana Marie Whitaker and step-children Kenny McCandless, Ellie McCandless Diel, and Michael Lukavich.
Mrs. McCandless is survived by her husband, Lamont McCandless, whom she marriage on November 19, 1983, daughter, Mrs. (Robert) Dixie Lou Barlow-Whitaker of Akron, Ohio; son, Jerald E. Barlow and his wife Lois of Meadville, Pennsylvania; seven grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, also surviving are step-children; Barbara, Judy, Jacquelyn and Patricia Jo McCandless of California, Mary Buchner and Karen and David McCandless of Houston, Gretchen Amado of Pittsburgh and Lynn Lukavich of West Sunbury. Also survived by many step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren

Ross L. Wells
November 1, 1933 - November 13, 2004
Ross L. Wells, age 71 of 128 Country Club Road, Butler, Pennsylvania, died Saturday, November 13, 2004 at 6:38 a.m. in Butler Memorial Hospital.
Born November 1, 1933 in Mingo Junction, Ohio he was the son of the late Sylvester Wells and the late Oma Weeks.
Mr. Wells was employed as manager, data processing operations, equipment and services for American Hardware Supply Company and Servistar Corporation from 1974-1991. Previous employers were Republic Steel Corp., Motorola, and Dayton Hudson Corp. (now Target Corp.)
Mr. Wells was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He graduated with a B.S. at the University of Akron and an M.A. at Arizona State University, a former doctoral candidate at the University of Pittsburgh. He was a member and former board member of the Butler Country Club, Penn Township Veterans Association, American Legion Post #117, Keystone, Great Plains and Jay Hawk Wings of the Commerative Air Force. He was a former pilot and co-founder of the Butler County Airport Aviation Association, and a member of the Eighth Air Force Historical Society.
Ross formerly served as chairman and treasurer of the Butler County Airport Authority from 1994-1999, was currently a member of the Airport Authority, a former board member for the United Way and the Moraine Trails Council of the BSA, a former president of the Butler Area Data Processing Management Association, a former member of the Butler Rotary Club and a part-time instructor at the Butler County Community College. He was one of the initiators of the annual Armed Forces Day Hangar Dance recognizing WWII veterans and as a member of the Penn Township Veterans Association, was instrumental in getting the Cobra Helicopter currently on the pylon at the Butler County Airport for Butler.
Ross served in the US Air Force during the Korean conflict as a ground and airborne radar operator. His special interest included general aviation, World War II aviation, golf, boating, and sports.
Mr. Wells is survived by his wife Donna L. Weiland Wells whom it marriage on December 30, 1986, by two sons, Bruce R. Wells of Haymarket, Virginia, Richard T. Wells of Butler, Pennsylvania; three daughters, Barbara VanBuren of Greenville, Pennsylvania, Melissa A. Thie of Huntsville, Alabama, Andrea L. Krise of Mooresville, North Carolina; one step-son, Mark Young of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; two step-daughters, Jacquelyn Gray and Kelly Chapman both of Butler, Pennsylvania; fourteen grandchildren and step-grandchildren; one great-grandson; two brothers, Allen C. Wells of Mingo Junction, Ohio, Glenn C. Wells of Steubenville, Ohio; and a number of nieces and nephews
There will be no public visitation. Arrangements are being handled by the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania.

Hazel Mauthe

Hazel Mauthe, age 79 of 105 Hazlett Avenue, Butler, Pennsylvania, died Thursday, November 11, 2004 at 3:40 p.m. in Sunnyview Home.
Born Monday, May 18, 1925 in Clarion, Pennsylvania she was the daughter of the late Louis Hepfl and the late Mabel Finnefrock.
Ms. Mauthe was a homemaker. She was a member of the New Testament Baptist Church. .
She is survived by two sons, Martin Mauthe of Hooker, Pennsylvania and Carl Mauthe of Butler; one daughter, Nina Fair of Butler, fourteen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, a sister Mrs. Janet Weisenstein of Butler, two brothers Sherwell Hepfl of Butler and Louis Hepfl of Mesa, Arizona and a number of nieces and nephews.
Her daughter and one sister preceded Ms. Mauthe in death.
Private visitation was held Saturday November 13, 2004 from 2-4 at Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania.
Private services were held at the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc. Saturday, November 13, 2004 with Reverend Dr. Steve Fisher, of her church, officiated. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery.

Nelson E. Caldwell

Nelson E. Caldwell, age 90 of 248 South Duffy Road, Butler, Pennsylvania, died Monday, November 8, 2004 at12:15 a.m. in Sugar Creek Rest Home.
Born Monday, May 25, 1914 in Butler, Pennsylvania he was the son of the late Edward Caldwell and the late Anna Lonitz.
Mr. Caldwell was a farmer and also owned and operated Caldwell Greenhouse. He was Presbyterian by faith. Mr. Caldwell enjoyed pitching horseshoes.
Mr. Caldwell is survived by number of nieces and nephews and a number of great nieces and great-nephews.
Mr. Caldwell was preceded in death by five sisters and one brother.
