Mark F. "Barney" Sherman, age 88, of North Road, Butler, died Sunday, November 15, 2009 at 11:45 a.m. in the Butler Memorial Hospital .
Born March 17, 1921 in Butler, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Charles Sherman and Mary Post Sherman.
Mr. Sherman was a Metallurgist for Armco. He was a member of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Mr. Sherman served in the U.S. Army Air Corp.
Mr. Sherman is survived by his wife, Olla Sherman, whom he marriage on June 30, 1942; three daughters, Carol Thomas and her husband, Robert of Butler; Patti Schwabe of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; and Charlotte "Cookie" Walls and her husband, Reith, of Poulsbo, Washington; and one daughter-in-law, Viki Sherman. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Eric Thomas and his wife, Jean, of Cranberry Township, Mark Thomas of Butler, Gail Purvis and her husband, Al of Freeport, Jill Aaron and her husband, Kevin of Butler, Michael Sherman of Butler, Raymond Schwabe and his wife, Jennifer of Gahanna, Ohio, Andrew Schwabe and his wife, Rebecca of Gap, Pennsylvania, Sarah Obernberger and her husband, Matt of Poulsbo, Washington, and Reith Walls III and his wife, Amber of Omaha, Nebraska; eighteen great-grandchildren, Emily and Haley Thomas, Marky and Aylssa Thomas, Abigail and Savannah Purvis, Tyler, Nathan and Amelia Aaron, Kate Busby, Emily Harris, Raymie and Alexa Schwabe, Faith Schwabe and Ian Schwabe, Jaden and Miley Walls and Peyton Obernberger.
In addition to his brother, Frank Sherman of Butler, Mr. Sherman is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Sherman was preceded in death by his son, Mark Dennis "Denny" Sherman, one son-in-law, Ray Schwabe, and one grandson, Scott Thomas.
Friends will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania on Friday, November 20, 2009 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc. on Saturday, November 21, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Dr. Alden Towberman of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church and Jeff Lawther of Mars Alliance Church officiating. Interment will follow in Butler County Memorial Park.
Helen Lucille Bowers Flick

Helen Lucille Bowers Flick, age 89, of Chicora Road, Butler, passed away Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 8:50 p.m. in the Butler Memorial Hospital.
Born in Brent, Pennsylvania on January 15, 1920, she was the daughter of the late William Bowers and Mary Knight Bowers.
In her early years, Helen worked at the egg auction in East Butler, and in later years, she worked on the bottling line at Penn Champ from where she retired. She was a member of the Butler Church of God of Prophecy.
She is survived by two sons, William Flick and his wife, Diana, and James Flick, both of Butler, and one daughter, Mrs. Janet Davis and her husband, Harold of Butler; ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren; one sister, Mary Sharp; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Harry R. Flick, whom she marriage on October 31, 1936 and passed away on May 23, 1999; her daughter, Mrs. Alice Johns of Mansfield, Ohio, and one sister and eight brothers.
Friends will be received at Thompson-Miller Funeral Home Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M..
Funeral Services will be from Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc. on Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 1:00 P.M. with the Reverend Thomas Kelly of Karns City Church of God of Prophecy officiating. Interment will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Park Worthington, Pennsylvania.
Thomas P. Keown, Sr.

Thomas P. Keown, Sr, age 84, of Butler, died Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 7:55 a.m. in the Butler Memorial Hospital.
Born August 19, 1925 in Butler, he was the son of the late Ira Keown and Katherine Pringle Keown.
Mr. Keown was a welder for Pullman Standard for 38 years, retiring in 1981. He was a member of the American Legion Post # 778 of Lyndora and the VFW Post # 778 of Butler. He was a Protestant by faith.
Mr. Keown is survived by his wife, Lorraine B. Keown whom he marriage on April 2, 1948; two daughters, Pamela Salopek and Kandice Ihlenfeld, and one son, Thomas Keown, Jr., all of Butler. Also surviving are five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Lucille Keys of Greenbelt, Maryland. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Keown was preceded in death by one sister.
Friends will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc. on Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. with Reverend Chris Easton of Church of the Nazarene of Butler officiating. Interment will follow in Butler County Memorial Park, where officers and members of the VFW # 249 and American Legion # 778 will conduct military honors.
George W. Smith "Smitty"

George W. Smith, "Smitty", age 73, of Butler Township, Pennsylvania, died at 8:50 a.m. in the Butler VA Medical Center.
Born February 6, 1936 in Butler, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Regis I. Smith and Olive (Young) Smith.
Mr. Smith attended St. Andrews United Presbyterian Church of Butler with his family. Mr. Smith was a drummer at the age of five, and played in several bands over the years. He was the Greenwood Village Robinette's Drum Instructor in the early 60's.
Smitty was a member of the Butler County Fire Chief's Association. He served on the Butler City Fire Department for 25 years, retiring as Chief of the Department in 1988. He then went on to become an instructor of Fire Training at Butler County Community College for 15 years, retiring in 2002. He also served as the Butler Township Fire Marshal for four years. Mr. Smith was a Senior Fire Instructor for the Pennsylvania State Fire Academy. He was a member of the Butler County Hazardous Materials Advisory Council, and he was a Fire Fighting and Hazardous Materials Instructor throughout Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio from 1969-1987. He was a member of the State Fire Academy Curriculum Review Committee, a member of the Community Colleges of Pennsylvania Fire Training, and he served on the Advisory Committee to the State Fire Commissioner. George also served as a Butler City Councilman from 1990-1994.
Mr. Smith served on the Butler Township Planning Commission, the Butler Loyal Order of Moose, and the American Legion Post 778. He served as the Chairman of the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign at the Fire Department from 1969-1974, and the Fire Prevention Program at PA State Police Camp Cadet from 1971-1987. Mr. Smith was an avid Nascar racing fan and a Steeler football fan. George served in the US Air Force from 1954 to 1958 as a Sergeant 1st Class stationed in Japan for two years.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Sarann Williams Smith, whom he marriage on August 25, 1962; two daughters, Kelly and her husband, George Ferrari, of Butler, Pennsylvania, and Tracy Smith of Butler, Pennsylvania; three grandchildren, Wade Ferrari, Grant Ferrari, and Miles Smith, all of Butler.
Friends will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania on Sunday, November 15, 2009 from 12 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m.
A celebration of George's life will be held at St. Andrews United Presbyterian Church on Monday, November 16, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Merry Hope Meloy officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Burial Estates in Mt. Chestnut.

Rudolph W. Bowser

Rudolph W. Bowser, age 68, of Park Crest Lane, Butler, Pennsylvania, died Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at 1:53 p.m. in the Butler Memorial Hospital.
Born March 28, 1941 in Butler, Pennsylvania he was the son of the late Calvin Bowser and Alice C. Van Buren.
Mr. Bowser had worked at Pullman Standard and Armco (AK Steel) of Butler, retiring in 2001. He was a member of the Italian Society, and Summit Township Sportsmen's Club. He enjoyed fishing, watching TV, and sports.
Mr. Bowser is survived by his wife, Delores (Dutch) Kummer Bowser, whom he marriage on August 24, 1962; one son, Rudolph W. Bowser, II and his wife, Sharon of Butler; two daughters, Darlene Hinchberger and her husband, Russell of Saxonburg, and Janet McIntire and her husband, Brian of Saxonburg; four grandchildren, Amanda and Daniel Hinchberger, and Joshua and Amber McIntire; two brothers, Ronald G. Bowser, and his wife, Elaine of Butler, and Calvin "Champ" Bowser, and his wife, Betty of Portersville; three sisters, Mildred Pappas and her husband, Ted of Clarion; Peggy Davis and her husband, Ray of Butler; and Georgia Kaye Colossimo of Butler. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Bowser was preceded in death by four sisters.
A memorial service to honor Mr. Bowser's life will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 4:00 P.M. at Christ Outreach Church 120 Walker Avenue, Butler, Pennsylvania with Reverend Ken Palmer officiating.

Larry F. Madden

Larry F. Madden, age 64, of Butler, died Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 11:03 a.m. in the Butler Memorial Hospital.
Born July 21, 1945 in Butler, he was the son of John William Madden and Pauline Virginia Summerville Madden.
Mr. Madden was a trust accountant for Mellon Bank, retiring in 2007. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he served as an Eucharistic Minister, a Lector, and a Communion Assistant. He was also a member of the Chancel Choir at Trinity Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Trinity Men's Ministry, Lutheran Men in Mission, and the Couples Small Group of the church. Larry enjoyed spending time with his family - his wife, kids, and grandkids. He also enjoyed time outdoors, ping pong, time with his Christian friends, and cars. Mr. Madden was an organ donor.
Mr. Madden is survived by his wife, Kathy Madden whom he marriage on August 5, 1967; four sons, W. Scott and his wife, Kim Madden of Pittsburgh; Christopher Madden and Tina Noland of Portland, Oregon; Todd and his wife, Rita Madden of Pittsburgh; Jonathan and his wife, Shannon Madden of Butler; one daughter, Amy and her husband, Joe Bevacqua of New Kensington, and six grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Madison and Emma Bevacqua, Drew, Liam, and Adelaide Madden. His mother, Pauline Madden of Chicora, also survives, along with four nieces, Stacey Reyes, Brynna, Gretchen and Becky Vogt; and one nephew, Chad Vogt.

Irene J. Baxter

Irene J. Baxter, age 79, of Pinewood Lane, Butler, Pennsylvania passed away Saturday, November 7, 2009 at 1:36 a.m. in the Butler Memorial Hospital.
Born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on January 9, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Clifford Lynn and Myrtle Hunt Lynn.
Mrs. Baxter was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. In her earlier years she was employed by Davy and Hilliard Drug Store in Butler, and was a homemaker in her later years. She also enjoyed bowling with friends. She was the ultimate caregiver.
She is survived by her husband Kenneth J. Baxter, whom she marriage on February 19, 1959; one son, Scott Baxter of East Butler; three sisters, Marie Philips of Butler, Joann Biernesser of Glenshaw, and Helen Thomas of Vancouver, Washington; and one brother, Arthur Lynn of Butler. Many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by three brothers; Ellwynn, Donald, and Howard Lynn; and two sisters, Florence Bellis and Dorothy Robb.
In respect of Irene's wishes, private family visitation will be from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc.
Public funeral services will be from Trinity Lutheran Church on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. with Vicar Scott Schul and Reverend Thomas M. Pierotti of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will follow in Butler County Memorial Park.
