Harry B. Leighton, Jr., age 90, formerly of Meridian, Pennsylvania died Monday, January 4, 2010 at 1:55 p.m. at Concordia Lutheran Ministries, Cabot, Pennsylvania.
Born November 3, 1919 in Evans City, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Harry B. Leighton, Sr. and Ida Lutz Leighton.
Mr. Leighton retired in 1983 from Butler Armco where he was Superintendent of Shipping and Traffic. He graduated from Evans City High School and attended New Castle Business School. He served as a Staff Sergeant in World War II and was recalled to active duty during the Korean War. Mr. Leighton was a member of North Street Christian Church. He was a life member and past Commander of the Meridian Veterans Club, a member of the Butler Elks Lodge #170, the Pittsburgh Traffic Club, and he had been an advisor for Junior Achievement.
Mr. Leighton, Jr. is survived by one son, Jim (Joan) Leighton of Kittanning, Pennsylvania; two daughters, Sally (Ralph) Cooper of Butler; Debra Garvin of West Chester, Ohio; three grandchildren, Jim (Alison) Leighton of Ford City, Pennsylvania; Kelli (Brad) Myers of Adrian, Pennsylvania; and Krystal Garvin of New York City, New York; and four great-grandchildren, Joshua, Evan, and Alyssa Leighton and Stefani Myers.
Mr. Leighton was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Kradel Leighton, who died March 14, 2006; two brothers, Harold and Jim Leighton, and his son-in-law, Douglas Garvin.
At the request of Harry B. Leighton, Jr. there will be no public visitation or funeral services.

Reverend Gervin L. Smith

Reverend Gervin L. Smith, age 96, of South Duffy Road, Butler, Pennsylvania, died Sunday, January 3, 2010 at 7:35 a.m. at his residence.
Born September 13, 1913 in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late James B. Smith and the late Anna G. Flaherty.
Reverend Smith was a 1931 graduate of McKeesport High School. He then went on to graduate from California (PA) University, Westminster College in New Wilmington, and the University of Pittsburgh School of Religion.
He was a charter member and past president of Phi Delta Kappa of Westminster College, a life member of the Pennsylvania Retired Teachers Association, and he was active in the Trinity Fellowship of Trinity Presbyterian Church. He was an avid bowler.
Reverend Smith was a United Methodist Pastor, serving pastorates in Fayette, Westmoreland, and Washington County. He was an English teacher and guidance counselor in the New Castle Schools for over 20 years. He was a retired pastor of the former Lyndora Presbyterian Church, serving there for 12 � years, and he served as the interim pastor for many local Presbyterian churches.
Reverend Smith is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ella Nora Williams Smith, whom he marriage on November 27, 1943; his two daughters, Denise Lynn Vogado and her husband, Paul, of Maryville, Tennessee; and Debbe Picerno and her husband, Jeff, of Butler, Pennsylvania; his four grandchildren, Michele Slone and her husband, Mike; Jessica Perry and her husband, Eugene; Lindy Vogado and Christopher Vogado; a step granddaughter, Danielle Picerno; two great grandsons, Adam Perry and George Slone; a step great grandson, Tyler Picerno; his daughter-in-law, Barb Smith of Mansfield, Ohio; and by two nieces and three nephews.
Reverend Smith was given special care by Patty Cousins, Linda Cunningham, Phyllis Brinks, Sharon Moore, Carol Finan, and Elaine Heasley.
Reverend Smith was preceded in death by one son, Reverend James L. Smith, who was deceased June 2009, and by two brothers and one sister.
Friends will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania on Tuesday, January 5, 2010 from 2 to 4 and 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Services will be held at the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc. on Tuesday, January 5, 2010, following visitation at 7:30 p.m. with Reverend Dennis Molnar of Wallace Memorial Presbyterian Church, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania officiating. Interment will follow in Butler County Memorial Park.
Helen R. Oesterling
Helen R. Oesterling of Lowrie House, formerly of West North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania, died Monday, January 25, 2010 at 5:30 a.m. in the Lowrie House.
Born in Butler, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Homer C. Rider and Lauretta McCandless Rider.
Mrs. Oesterling was a Homemaker. She was a member of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Mrs. Oesterling was a former member of the Eastern Star and several Bridge Clubs.
Mrs. Oesterling is survived by one daughter, Carol Miller of Clearspring, Maryland; one son, Alan Oesterling and his wife, Penny of Etowah, North Carolina; one granddaughter, Melinda Marquess and her husband, Wayne; and their children, Reuben and Leanna; two grandsons, Jason Oesterling and his wife, Janeen, and their children, Caden, Luke, and Elijah; and Craig Oesterling and his wife, Sarah; and by several nieces and nephews. Also surviving is her Yorkie dog, Chester.
Mrs. Oesterling was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Oesterling, who passed away on May 23, 1999, and also by one sister, Lynda Gagne, and one brother Sherman L. Rider. Also preceding her in death was her dog, Patches.

Services will be held at the Chapel of Devotion Mausoleum at Butler County Memorial Park on Thursday, February 4, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Ralph Storm of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will follow in Butler County Memorial Park.
Ottilia Scott

Ottilia Scott, age 91, of Concordia Haven Apartments, Cabot, Pennsylvania, died Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 12:35 a.m. at her residence.
Born December 17, 1918 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania she was the daughter of the late Edward Haerich and Emma Budnik Haerich.
Mrs. Scott was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Cabot, Pennsylvania. She enjoyed Hawaiian music, art, painting, creative writing, and reading. Mrs. Scott was a professional musician of Hawaiian Music and did her own radio show on KQV and WWSW radio stations in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She traveled througout the USA with her own trio and then later with Johnny Kaaihue and the Royal Hawaiians; she also wrote some of her own music.
Mrs. Scott is survived by her husband Walter B. Scott, whom she marriage on May 26, 1946; by three daughters, Arlene Thomas of Coral Springs, Florida, and Holly Daum of Leeper, Pennsylvania, and Malia Hoffstot of Palm City, Florida; five grandchildren, Sharon Rooney Goodman of Coconut Creek, Florida, Jennifer Thomas of Coral Springs, Florida, Lindsay Stockland of Dingmas Ferry, Pennsylvania, Christy Hinkle of Lebanon, Pennsylvania, and Kathleen Daum of Leeper, Pennsylvania; four great grandchildren, Cameron Goodman, Morghan Goodman, Jayme Hinkle and Codi Stockland.
Mrs. Scott was preceded in death by one sister, Elsie Kucan.

Harvey A. McCall, age 82, formerly of Whitestown Road, Butler, Pennsylvania, died Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 8:05 a.m. in the Autumn Grove Care Center in Harrisville, Pennsylvania.
Born January 15, 1928 in Butler, he was the son of the late Harvey N. McCall and Mabel M. Albert McCall.
Mr. McCall worked for the Butler Area School District for many years as the maintenance engineer at Butler Senior High School. He had previously worked in maintenance for several years at the Sears store in Butler. Mr. McCall was a member of the Community Alliance Church in Butler, belonging to the Silent for Jesus Sunday School Class. He was an alumni of the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, Class of 1948.
Mr. McCall was preceded in death by is wife, Betty Hammond McCall, who passed away on May 31, 1989.
There will be no public visitation. Services will be held at Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc. 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Dennis L. Krajacic of Community Alliance Church officiating. Interment will follow in Butler County Memorial Park.

Jodi L. Pierrel Hinchberger
July 27, 1960 ~ January 30, 2010
Jodi L. Pierrel Hinchberger, age 49, of Butler, Pennsylvania, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at 5:21 a.m. in the West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania following a battle with cancer.
Born July 27, 1960 in Butler, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Joseph H. Pierrel and Leona M. Stamm Pierrel.
Jodi was a member of First Baptist Church in Butler, Pennsylvania. She was a labor and delivery nurse at West Penn Hospital for 21 years of service. She was a member of the Rubber Dolls stamping club. Jodi enjoyed doing crafts and was an avid NASCAR fan and she loved to watch the Pittsburgh Penguins and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Jodi is survived by two sons, Joe Hinchberger and Josh Hinchberger, both of Butler. Also surviving are her parents, Joe and Leona Pierrel of Butler, one brother, Jay and his wife, Melissa Pierrel of Butler, her grandmother, Zelma Stamm of Butler, and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania on Monday, February 1, 2010 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday, February 2, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. also at Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc.
Services will be held at the First Baptist Church on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Dave Maitland of First Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Burial Estates.

Stella I. Davis Emrick

Stella I. Davis Emrick, age 85, of Westwood Manor, Butler, Pennsylvania, died Monday, February 22, 2010 at 3:38 p.m. in the Butler Memorial Hospital.
Born October 17, 1924 in Tulsa, Oklahoma she was the daughter of the late Robert E. Davis and Loretta Craig Davis.
Mrs. Emrick was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a triple major in German, French, and Spanish. She graduated in two years, Magna Cum Laud, with a Bachelor of Science degree. She earned a Masters Degree and a Doctoral equivalency from the University of Pittsburgh, and did post graduate studies at the University of Maine and the University of Besancon, France. She went on to become a teacher in the Butler Area School District, retiring in 1988 after 33 years of service. She taught French in the elementary program for 13 years and German in the Senior High School for 18 years, where she was also chairman of the foreign language department. She also taught the gifted program at Emily Brittain School, and Spanish and German at night school. She was awarded the Teacher of the Year in 1967 by the Butler Area School District. Mrs. Emrick also taught practicum classes at Grove City College, and she taught the gifted program under Nelson Hale at Slippery Rock University. Mrs. Emrick acted as a consultant for the Department of Education at Duquesne University, California State College, Seton Hill College, Carnegie Mellon University, Shippensburg State College, and Wyoming Valley School District in Scranton, Pennsylvania. In 1967 she was awarded the Educator of the Year Award from Pennsylvania State Modern Language Association. Mrs. Emrick developed the elementary forerign language curriculum for the state of Pennsylvania. Mrs. Emrick was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, the Butler Education Association, and the National Education Association
Mrs. Emrick is survived by her son, James G. Emrick, Jr. of Kittanning, Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren, Roshelle Emrick, James Emrick and his wife, Carissa, Alicia Emrick and Keith Krauchak, Kasella Emrick, Frank (Rocky) Emrick, Christian Emrick, Shane Emrick, and Josie Emrick, and ten great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her special friends, Pete Mantzaris, Judy Grossman, Mary Morando, and Larry Boggs.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Emrick was preceded in death by her husband, James "Bert" Emrick, Sr., whom she marriage on June 11, 1941, and who passed away January 7, 1996, and by one sister and a special cousin.
Friends will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Services will be held at the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc. on Thursday, February 25, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Joe DiDonato of the Christian Harness Horsemen's Association and Pastor Bob Stauffer of Gateway Community Church officiating.
