Beatrice Joan "Jo" Barger Towns of Butler, Pennsylvania, died Thursday, February 18, 2010 at 8:55 a.m in the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born in North Washington, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Dean Rea and LaVerne Anderson Rea.
Mrs. Towns was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. In her lifetime, she was a Trustee, a Sunday School Teacher, and a Bible School Teacher. Mrs. Towns was a Bookkeeper for Milo Williams Jewelers in Butler, Pennsylvania where she retired in 1996.
Mrs. Towns is survived by her husband, John W. Towns, Jr., whom she marriage on November 6, 1999, three daughters, Deborah and her husband David Fiscus of Simpsonville, South Carolina, Jan and her husband Bob Parsons of Bethany Beach, Delaware, Amy and her husband Gary Fields of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews, one brother, Jim Rea of Herman, Pennsylvania; two step-sons, John W., III, and his wife Melissa Towns of Westminster, Maryland, and Duane and his wife Marty Towns of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; seven step grandchildren, and three step great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Towns was preceded in death by her sister Revah Rea Tack who passed away in August, 1986, and also by her first husband of 43 years, Meredith "Salty" Barger who passed away July 15, 1991.
Friends will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday, February 20, 2010 from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc. on Sunday February 21, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. with Reverend Dr. James Swanson of Covenant Presbyterian Church officiating. Private Internment will follow in Bear Creek Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Greater Pittsburgh, 320 Bilmar Drive, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15205.
Leslie L. "Les" Hilgar

Leslie L. "Les" Hilgar, age 83, of Butler, Pennsylvania, died Thursday, February 18, 2010 at 9:45 a.m. in the Good Samaritan Hospice Unit at Concordia in Cabot, Pennsylvania.
Born May 5, 1926 in Euclid, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Andrew Lee Hilgar and Edith Fleeger Hilgar.
Mr. Hilgar was a Systems Analyst for Spang Company, retiring in 1982. He also sold real estate for the former Weldon-West Agency in Butler. He graduated from West Sunbury Vocational High School in 1944; he then went on to graduate from Grove City College in 1950. He loved sports, such as hunting, fishing, and especially baseball. He played baseball for the Air Corp in Austria in 1945-1946 while serving with the U.S. Army 10th Airborne Squadron during World War II and for the Butler Cubs from 1946-1950. He also enjoyed woodworking. Mr. Hilgar was a member of First Baptist Church of Butler, where he served on the First Baptist Church School Board for many years.
Mr. Hilgar is survived by his wife, Delores I. (Dee Dee) Hilgar, whom he marriage on June 2, 1948, by five sons, Dale and his wife, Linda Hilgar of Eau Claire, Pennsylvania, Ray and his wife, Valerie Hilgar of Chicora, Pennsylvania, Keith Hilgar of Landrum, South Carolina, Vernon Hilgar of Butler, Mark Hilgar and Kathy Long of Butler, and one daughter, Laura and her husband, Randall Wyant of Rochester, New York; ten grandchildren, Leann Covert, Erin Wampler, Scott Hilgar, Jonathan Wyant, Cherith Shuboney, Emily Hilgar, Anna Hilgar, Christopher Hilgar, Sara Hilgar, and Dustin Hilgar; seven great grandchildren, a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins, and two sisters, Mrs. Delores Glenn and Mrs. Donald (Shirley) McCandless II, both of of West Sunbury.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Hilgar was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Andrea Hilgar, and one brother, John V. Hilgar.
Friends will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania on Sunday, February 21, 2010 from 3:00 to 5:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Services will be held at the First Baptist Church on Monday, February 22, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor David Maitland of First Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Butler County Memorial Park.

Shirley Joan (Cunningham) Sherman
June 30, 1935 ~ February 19, 2010
Gracefully succumbing to illness, Shirley Joan (Cunningham) Sherman died February 19, 2010 at St. John Specialty Care Center in Mars. Born on June 30, 1935 she was the daughter of Floyd E. and Dorothy M. (Unverzagt) Cunningham.
Graduating from Butler Area Senior High School in 1953 as head majorette for the marching band, Shirley also performed in many school plays. In spite of the many afflictions that dictated her life, Shirley enjoyed shopping, listening to music and, especially, spending time with her family.
Surviving are three daughters, Sandra K. (Jewell) Glover, Linda M. (Jewell) Thompson, Cynthia E. (Sherman) Freeman, and a brother, Donald F. Cunningham, all from Butler. She will be sadly missed as well by six grandchildren, Justin R. Mickey, Kimberly A. (Thompson) McClellan, Kylene M. (Thompson) Kozik, Kayla J. (Hutchison) Hildebrand, Rita M. (Hutchison) Shay, and Ashley J. Glover. Six great-grandchildren, a niece, two nephews, and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews also remain. Preceding Shirley in death is a daughter, Deborah J. Sherman, and a husband, Charles E. Sherman.
Throughout her life Shirley maintained a fervent faith and was a blessing to everyone she encountered. Her genuine and child-like warmth and love left a lasting impression on those who will eternally miss her.
Internment and private burial services will be at the discretion of the family.
Memorializations may be made to St. John Specialty Care Center 500 Wittenberg Way, Mars, Pennsylvania 16046 for their compassionate and tender care.
Douglas Van Deusen

Douglas Van Deusen, age 88, of Butler, Pennsylvania died peacefully Friday, February 19, 2010 in the Butler VA Medical Center in Butler, Pennsylvania .
Born October 29, 1921, in Roscoe, New York, he was the son of the late Walter Van Deusen and Lydia Kish Van Deusen, and the eldest of seven children.
Mr. Van Deusen has been a resident of Butler since 1977. He was retired after 26 years of service from the former Fisher Body Division of General Motor Corp., located in Trenton, New Jersey. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II from 1942 - 1945. He saw service in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Mr. Van Deusen was a member of Covenant United Presbyterian Church. He was active in the Butler Moose Lodge # 64, and a member of Western Pennsylvania Moose Legion #1. Mr. Van Deusen also belonged to the American Legion #778 and was a life member of the VFW Post #249 and the Butler Elks #170.
Mr. Van Deusen is survived by two sons, Gary R. Van Deusen of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Larry J. (Annette) Van Deusen of Williamsburg, Virginia; one daughter, Mrs. Bill (Jayne) Daubner of Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania; and nine grandchildren, Dana (Bob) Harvey, Douglas Van Deusen, Michele (Brian) Sullenger, Michael Van Deusen, Jennifer (Kevin) Avery, Allison Daubner, Bill Daubner, Adam Van Deusen, and Laura (Kevin) Richardson; and five great grandchildren, Gwendolyn, Madelyn, and Jonathan Harvey, and Alexis and Camden Sullenger. Also surviving are one brother, Robert J.(Sharon) Szabo of Stephenson, Michigan, one sister, Mrs. Pat (Marilyn) Laudato of Tuckerton, New Jersey, and one daughter-in-law, Janice Van Deusen of Lawrenceville, New Jersey and Joanne Van Deusen of Butler.
Mr. Van Deusen was preceded in death by one son, Douglas Van Deusen; two brothers, William Van Deusen and Richard Van Deusen; and by two sisters, Jayne Passage and June Johnson.
Friends will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania on Friday, February 26, 2010 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Lewis E. Davis of Wintergreen Dr. Butler, Pennsylvania 16001 died Monday, February 23, 2010 at 8:25 a.m. in Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born September 4, 1915 in Oakland Twp., Pennsylvania he was the son of the late George L. Davis and Nellie Brown Davis.
Mr. Davis was employed by Pullman Standard where he was a supervisor in the Steel Stores Department he retired in 1979. He was a member of former St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Butler. He was a member of PIPP The Pennsylvania Independent Petroleum Producers.
He was marriage to Gertrude Snyder she preceded him in death in 1977. Following her death he marriage Glyn Ferrier, she preceded him in death in 2006.
He is survived by three sons: Raymond Davis and his wife Peggy, William Davis and his wife Mary both of Butler, Pennsylvania, and Lewis (Mike) Davis and his wife Patricia of West Sunbury, Pennsylvania; three daughters: Carol Twentier and Kathy Kondos and her husband Mike both of Butler, Pennsylvania and Donna Kirk and her husband Ken of Jay, Florida; one brother: John Davis of Butler, Pennsylvania; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one daughter: Jeanne Shields, one sister and three brothers.
Family and friends will be received at Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Ray J. Kennedy, age 91, of Franklin, Pennsylvania, formerly of Butler, and Portersville, Pennsylvania, died on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at 4:45 p.m. in The Caring Place in Franklin, Pennsylvania
Born June 17, 1918 in Bentleyville, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late John H. Kennedy and Hazel E. Rugh Kennedy.
Mr. Kennedy had been a Plumber and Steam Fitter, belonging to Plumber and Steam Fitters Union, Local # 47 of Beaver, Pennsylvania; he retired in 1983. Mr. Kennedy served with the U.S. Marines during World War II in the Pacific Theatre and in the Caribbean area. He was a life member of VFW Post #249 of Butler, a life member of the Butler Moose Lodge #64, a life member of the Butler Elks #170, and a former member of the National Rifle Association..
Mr. Kennedy is survived by his brother, Edward J.and his wife Joy Kennedy of Santa Ysabel, California and several nieces and nephews. Also a Brother Inlaw, Clyde McCaslin of Butler, Pennsylvania.
In addition to his wife, Irene P. Foraker Kennedy, whom he marriage on November 4, 1950 and passed away on October 12, 2007, Mr. Kennedy was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

Margaret H. Washburn, age 80, of Marwood Road, died Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at 9:05 p.m. in the Good Samaritan Hospice in Cabot, Pennsylvania.
Born June 14, 1929 in Coraopolis, she was the daughter of Oscar Haugh and Sarah Murray Haugh.
Mrs. Washburn was a member of St. Andrews United Presbyterian Church. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Washburn enjoyed gardening, choir and was a member of the Presbyterian Women.
Mrs. Washburn is survived by one son, Jeff Washburn and his wife Kate, of Saxonburg, Pennsylvania; one daughter, Carol Washburn of Verona, Pennsylvania; five grandchildren, Kathryn Washburn of Columbia South Carolina, Jill Snyder of Kansas City, Missouri, Anna Snyder of Morgantown, West Virginia, and Gretchen Snyder of Verona, Pennsylvania; and one step grandson, Nicholas Romeo of Saxonburg, Pennsylvania; and one great-granddaughter, Brooklyn Harper of Columbia, South Carolina.
Mrs. Washburn was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond B. Washburn, whom she marriage on April 23, 1953 and passed away on September 13, 2009, and also by one sister, Phyllis Bradley.
There will be a memorial service at St. Andrews United Presbyterian Church, 201 East Jefferson Street, Butler, Pennsylvania 16001 on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Merry H. Meloy officiating.
